Continuing Strength Training (144/145)

If you have already taken our Introduction to Strength Training class, or if you regularly do strength training on your own, this class is for you. It will involve more strength work with the machines and dumbbells, and more circuits. The session will meet twice a week to help you make weight training a regular part of your routine. Your trainer is Amara Bishop, a health fitness specialist student who is working toward her bachelor’s in exercise science. Discover the Benefits of Yoga (146/147)

Yoga is a calm, yet exhilarating, total-body conditioning exercise. It is gentle enough to be practiced by those over 50, so you’ll be able to work within any limitations you may have. In this introductory course, we’ll do strengthening and stretching along with breathing and meditation. Akiko Dykhuizen, a Certified Yoga Instructor, will lead the class, specially designed for our OLLI group. Bring a yoga mat or towel to class. Each session is limited to 20. If you have already taken an introductory yoga class or would like to learn more challenging positions and techniques, this class is for you. Self-Defense Class (150)

In a fun and safe environment, this workshop will teach you how to transform your fear into a source of power and strength. You’ll learn awareness skills that will enable you to detect a potential threat before it occurs. You will practice simple and effective strikes to vulnerable areas on an attacker’s body and learn how to set verbal boundaries by using the power of your voice. The workshop will be led by Craig and Laura Sira, owners of The Academy of Martial Arts and Fitness in Midland. Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Beginning Line Dancing (151)

If you have never danced or always wanted to dance…this class is for you! You will learn all the basic line dance steps and several slower, short dances. It is a fun way to exercise and meet new people or invite your friends to take the class with you. Carolyn Johnson, who also teaches at Delta College, will lead the class.
