Exchange student interview

As we all know, an exchange is mandatory for every Hanken student and therefore, most of us have probably heard stories of what an exchange is like abroad. However, have you ever wondered what an exchange at Hanken is like? We interviewed Valentin Moroge, a master’s student studying his second semester at Hanken, to find out what

he thinks about Hanken and Finland. Text: Jonatan Svahn Image: Valentin Moroge

Introduce yourself

- My name is Valentin and I’m 25 years old from Strasbourg France. I study in Strasbourg Business School and I’m on my second year of my master’s degree.

Why did you choose Hanken?

- I chose Hanken because I wanted to go to a Nordic country. Norway is too expensive and the student that was in Hanken before me told me so much good things about Hanken and that’s why I chose this place over Sweden.

How do studies differ from your home university?

- Studies are totally different. Here you don't really specialize during your studies. Also, in my home Uni we have final exams while here it's more about assignments and weekly stuff. Lectures are also much more interactive.

How does student life differ?

- Student life in Strasbourg is great. It's basically the same. But to compare let's say if Strasbourg is a 100 on the student life's scale, you guys are crazy enough to make it go to 150 here.

Have you experienced any culture shocks while in Finland?

- People are nicer in general (not difficult when compared to the French). Everyone speaks English, places are cleaner...

What have been your favourite and least favourite things about Finland?

- My favourite thing is definitely sauna. I'll miss daily sauna really bad. My least favourite thing I would say is the moment where streets are slippery and you have to pay attention at every step to not fall. Also, the alcohol prices obviously.
