Show off the city through green-tinted lenses, we encourage residents to submit unique pictures of Joburg, and enter our quarterly photographic competition. Joburg is filled with a rich supply of green spaces and showing off these places is a must. These green spaces can be parks, tree-lined streets, a green skyline, people visiting parks, the abundance of fauna and flora, conservation sites and cemeteries in the city. About Stop Hunger Now SA Who is Stop Hunger Now SA? Established in 1998, Stop Hunger Now is an international relief organisation that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. The organisation is driven by a vision to end world hunger in our lifetime and a mission to provide food and life-saving aid to the world’s most destitute and hungry in the most sustainable, efficient and effective manner. The South African branch of Stop Hunger Now opened in September 2009 in Johannesburg, and a Cape Town office was launched in March 2011. Arbor Month September is Arbor Month, and every year Joburg City Parks hosts range of activities in celebration. JOBURG City Parks plans to plant 10 000 trees during September - and we want everyone to do their bit to make the city green. This year’s Arbor Month also falls during the participation process of the City's Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) for 2040, which is dedicated to creating a city that is smart, liveable and environmentally friendly. Week 7 of the GDS - with an environmental focus - runs from 19 to 23 September. The week will be used to identify environmental issues facing the city and proposing possible solutions. We'll also be working on various projects during Environment Week, including beautifying our different regions and helping clean and reclaim open spaces.
The UN International Day of Families, SOS Children’s Villages raises awareness of the challenges affecting families today. The changes on the global economic landscape and its effects on the most vulnerable, namely children, has been largely overlooked. It is an occasion to bring attention to their plight. In these challenging times those working with over two million of the world’s most vulnerable children and their families have provided a unique insight into the issues that are common to many. SOS Children’s Villages teams across five continents share their experiences and concerns as they provide realistic options for legislators and others who wish to do something NOW to make family life better in 2013. The priority of SOS Children’s Villages is to help families care for children. Regardless of their background, children should live in a family who will support them to reach their potential. When it is not possible for a child to remain in his or her biological family, he or she may find a new home within a family in an SOS Children’s Village. Today, is a day to invest in families SOS Children’s Villages requests that everyone unite and pursue a can-do approach to help families overcome crisis.
