Things are once again back to normal and I want to thank all of our members for your patience; and for the support and encouragement you gave us in the aftermath of Hurricane Hermine. It was a challenging few days, but together, we pulled through in great fashion. I’m extremely proud of the dedication of our employees and the hard work they put in restoring power to about 14,000 members with around 19,000 metered locations that lost power because of damage done by the storm. Throughout the Labor Day weekend, crews made hundreds of trips to make repairs to SVEC’s system, which includes 4,385 miles of energized lines across an area of about 2,000 square miles. In light of the priority we place on safety, I’m especially gratified by the fact that no one was injured during the effort. Finally, while we are generally very pleased with how things went, we will review our response to the hurricane and determine how we can do even better in the future. In this month’s newsletter, you can see photos of the damage that were taken after Hermine passed, as well as the hard work of our own linemen and those from surrounding areas to get the system back on its feet. You can also read about Live Oak’s efforts to put our region on the map for a newly revived Amtrak line, which is just recovering from hurricane damage itself. The line, which travels from Jacksonville to New Orleans, has been shut down ever since Hurricane Katrina, but its renewal provides a fantastic opportunity for our area. More than anything else, that is what sets cooperatives apart from other utilities. Whether it’s promoting economic development or lending a helping hand when others need it, our cooperative family pulls together when it matters most. Thank you for being a part of it.
Hermine leaves about 14,000 members without power On Friday, Sept. 1, as many people were preparing for a long weekend, Hurricane Hermine struck the Suwannee Valley and left 14,000 SVEC members without power. Over the next four days, 29 crews comprised of 99 workers from SVEC, contractors and other cooperatives brought in from Alabama, Georgia and other parts of Florida
pulled together to repair the damage and get the lights back on as quickly as possible. “We are deeply grateful to our fellow cooperatives whose employees gave up their weekends to help restore power for our members,” said Executive Vice President and CEO Michael S. McWaters.
