RENAY ELLE MORRIS LIVING DANGEROUSLY IN A TIME OF NOISE, MEMES AND EMOJIS To task, as a photographer, is to translate words into an image(s). I took stock, uncovering a myriad of ideas dawning and gaining momentum. There were the sights and reads_ digital breadcrumbs_ accurate and false pressing into me daily. All in a conned and reclusive state while the global pandemic has bound us into captivity. I came to the decision that a selection of photographic images from my series “Chasing Cultures” would reference points offered by the premise of this biennale_ in particular its notation of “modern man experiencing the effects of globalization and its relationship to current political, economic and cultural situations, and the statement “recent events around the world that brought us into a state of chaos did not come out of nowhere.” Although, the emphasis is on modern, I found it necessary to draw upon the complexion of the ancient world as we are familiar with the proverb, “history repeats itself.” The ancient and modern orders display a similar footprint_ those who rule and those who serve_ “the others.” Prying into the strengths and weaknesses of a culture, is to study the evolutionary process of which past inuences take center stage in the causation and effects of current dissention and unrest. While human ingenuity, in concert with the natural world, has given us tools_ from early writings, language and triumphs of engineering, its divides remain of profound disproportionate means. In contemporary society, the dynamic of how that plays out is multifaceted and layered. But the constant is the same. Yes, we are breaking borders, yet globalization in its most basic form still face communities and individuals with exclusive ideologies. Throughout time we have learned of the great wars, disease, famine, xenophobia_ not to forget wealth and poverty. As a result, disruption, chaos, and dismissal of “others” is, in my opinion, the most signicant roadblock in the restructuring of social and political relations around the world. At this juncture, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my country_ the USA, where there is a tumultuous divide_ a present climate of inordinate madness. It is a time for “re-set”, as acts of insurrection affect not only our democratic institutions, but those of communities worldwide. And, as of this writing, reversals of policies by our new administration have allowed for the restructuring of inclusivity on a global scale_ a step towards providing the clearest preview of a politically fraught society ready to meet the challenges to transition. I am delighted to participate in the IAF ANIMA MUNDI and partners 2nd International Contemporary Art Biennale online program. With an emphasis on the phrase ‘no holds barred’ it is limitless and expressive force and a champion for noted participants to speak out and reject the moral hazards which infect and lead us to the winters of our discontent. Peace comes and goes. Governments may make laws_ and it is up to its citizens to remedy those injustices and pernicious divides.
