What Will You Learn this Year? As we begin to embrace new year opportunities, Southern Utah University and Southwest Technical College invite you to join us in learning something new. Whether your goal is to explore a hobby, master a skill or take steps to advance in your career, we’ve designed a lineup of offerings to help give you that feeling of a fresh start in 2024. In this issue, you’ll notice a focus on new microcredential learning offerings. What is a microcredential? The term represents small bite-sized opportunities, or short courses, designed to teach skills to help you advance in the workforce. They typically result in a digital badge or certificate that represents successful completion. SUU and Southwest Tech actively partner with local businesses and industry experts to develop and offer these quick and accessible courses. We recommend microcredentials for those looking to enter a new field, return to the workforce or achieve a career goal by developing a skill. The employment landscape is changing—globally and in our rural southwest Utah communities. New skills are needed more than ever to keep pace with emerging technologies and the post-pandemic needs of employers. As your local community education partners, we’re here to help you navigate local job opportunities and to provide a flexible, accessible path for boosting your resume and lifting your career. Pitch-Style Competition RECOGNIZES LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS SUU Startup is pleased to recognize the State Bank Business Challenge finalists who recently competed during the One Utah Summit for cash prizes and other awards. The pitch-style competition opened with a preliminary round in which contestants were given three 90-second pitches to present their business models. Semi-finalists were then narrowed down based on scores. From there, contestants advanced to the final round to pitch their ideas to a prestigious panel of judges. The eight winners include: James Thelin with MegaLoaf, Megan Hutchinson with Sunny Side Up Pastures, Heidi Kershaw with Square in the Eye, Jett Strand with Etched Timber, Cade Matheson with PhotoHive, Torrie Meidell with Dream Acre Flower Farm, JP Teerlink with Parable Devices and Kevin Ravenburg with Velocity Boards. Thelin’s business, MegaLoaf Sourdough, is focused on changing the bread industry by crafting uniquely flavorful and healthy sourdough bread. MegaLoaf is infused with prebiotics and probiotics that make it stand out from other bread brands. “Participating in the competition was an incredible experience,” said Thelin. “Winning reaffirms our commitment to revolutionizing the bread industry with MegaLoaf Sourdough. We can’t wait to bring more innovation and health to our customers’ tables.” Hutchinson’s business, Sunny Side Up Pastures, believes that all food should be local, healthy and sustainable; She also believes a healthy sustainable future relies on more small farmers. “Farmers who are going off the beaten path are often criticized and told we won’t make it,” said Hutchinson. “Even though I know what we are doing is important, it was so encouraging to have others say that as well.” Kershaw’s business Square in the Eye is a company dedicated to fostering eye contact in the autism community. Square in the Eye helps those who suffer from autism to learn the skill of eye contact, which in turn greatly assists in overall communication and ease of social interaction. The State Bank Business Challenge is a great opportunity for small business owners to network, build relationships and have their voice heard. DEMO DAY BUSINESS CHALLENGE The Cedar City Business and Innovation Center, in partnership with SUU Startup and the Larry H. and Gail Miller Center for Entrepreneurship, successfully hosted the first-ever Demo Day event on Saturday, August 12 at the Cedar City Business & Innovation Center. Demo Day provided a unique platform for local small businesses and startups to showcase their innovations, gain exposure and connect with other entrepreneurs in the community. Due to a generous grant, a total of $3,000 in awards were distributed among the participating businesses. Attendees actively participated in supporting their favorite presenters by receiving tokens upon arrival. These tokens were then allocated to the businesses of their choice, effectively converting them into sponsorship money. This innovative approach engaged the community and empowered them to contribute directly to the success of local entrepreneurs. “We were thrilled to provide a platform for our local businesses to shine and connect with the community,” said Craig Isom, director, accelerating innovators at SUU Startup. “The financial support from the grant undoubtedly made a meaningful impact on these startups, and we were excited to see the innovation that emerged from this collaboration.” The Demo Day event was free, open to everyone and designed to be family-friendly. Attendees enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere filled with free food, live music and ample opportunities to explore and support the incredible talent flourishing in Cedar City. The Demo Day event was a resounding success, celebrating innovation, community, and the entrepreneurial spirit in Cedar City. We extend our gratitude to all who contributed to making this event a memorable showcase of local talent and ingenuity. The Demo Day event was a collaborative effort presented by SUU’s Larry H. & Gail Miller Center for Entrepreneurship, SUU Startup and The Cedar City Business & Innovation Center. These organizations are dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship, supporting startups, and promoting economic development in the Cedar City community.

NEWSBITES SUU Awarded EDA Grant in Support of $2 Million Partnership Initiative with Focus on Regional Workforce Southern Utah University (SUU) recently secured a five-year grant totaling $1 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) under the 2023 University Center Competition. The awarded “FutureReady Utah Worksite Ecosystem Project” will focus on disadvantaged and rural regions and is designed to encourage collaboration between employers and business resource organizations to prepare for growth. Notably, SUU’s proposal emerged as the sole recipient in the state of Utah and one of only 23 grants awarded to colleges and universities in 14 states for administering programs to leverage their assets, promote innovation and strengthen regional economies.
One Utah Summit Recognizes Local Transformational Leaders The One Utah Summit Leadership Day, recently hosted at SUU’s campus, is dedicated to providing learning experience in the area of leadership development. This event also gave the opportunity to recognize several local leaders. The “Transformational Leader” award was presented to individuals who actively engage in lifting Utah’s workforce, communities, culture and industry. Notable recipients include Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, Donia Jessop, Mayor of Hilldale, and Megen Ralphs, Employee Experience Leader for Leavitt Group Enterprises. These remarkable individuals exemplify the spirit of transformative leadership and drive positive change across the region.
SUU Community Reads Discusses “The House on Mango Street” SUU Community Reads, a free book event held at the city library, met on a Thursday night in November to discuss the novel “The House On Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros. SUU Assistant Professor of Spanish Iliana Portaro and SUU Assistant Professor of English Charla Strosser facilitated an engaging conversation about the book’s themes of identity, belonging and the challenges associated with growing up in a marginalized community. The event was made possible through a collaborative partnership between SUU Community Education, Cedar City Rotary Club (CCRC) and Cedar City Library. Thanks to a generous grant from CCRC, Community Reads attendees were given a complimentary book.
Utah Rural Leadership Academy Graduates Third Cohort The Utah Rural Leadership Academy (URLA) recently graduated its third cohort of participants from across the state at a celebratory dinner on SUU’s campus. The leadership academy is part of the SUU Leadership Institute and facilitates powerful exercises and active learning opportunities to develop county officials with essential administration and leadership skills. As a requirement for graduation, members of the cohort actively participated in three courses including public budgeting and finance, intergovernmental relations and a rural governance incubator.
