Becky Hogan enters her first season as the head coach of the Southern Utah University women’s soccer team, and becomes just the second coach in program history. A native of West Jordan, Utah, Hogan will return to her home state for her first collegiate head coaching position. She most recently served as an assistant coach at Idaho State, but has also spent time at Winthrop University and at the club and high school levels, heading up the Utah Avalanche and Utah Rush Soccer Clubs as well as the Skyline Eagles women’s soccer program. During her time at Idaho State Hogan helped three players earn All-Conference Honors, including freshman Ashley Jones who was named the Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2009. Prior to joining the Bengals, Hogan led the Utah Rush Soccer Club for three years and coached at Skyline High School in 2008, where she took the Eagles to their first state tournament appearance in six years.

3

A distinguished player herself, Hogan was a three-time All-Big 12 selection for the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1995-98 and was named to the AllBig 12 Tournament team following her senior season. Her team also captured three Big 12 tournament titles (1996, ’97, and ’98) while advancing to the NCAA’s Sweet 16 in 1997 and 1998 as well as the Elite 8 in 1996. Hogan also served as a team captain during her senior season. Following her collegiate career Hogan played professionally for several professional teams including the RushSLC of the Women’s Premier Soccer League, the Boston Breakers of the WUSA, the Chicago Cobras and the Denver Diamonds of the W-League. Coach Hogan earned a degree in English from Nebraska in 1998 and later received a secondary teaching certification from Weber State in 2009. She also holds an “A” coaching license from the U.S. Soccer Federation and a national youth coaching license.

Thunderbird Soccer

Adam Farsi brings 10 years of coaching experience to his post with the SUU Soccer team. He most recently worked with the Idaho State University Women’s Soccer program while also serving as a captain and assistant coach for the ISU Men’s Club team. The native of Pocatello, Idaho has served as the head coach at both Pocatello and American Falls High School as well as an assistant at Century High School in Pocatello. He has also worked at the club level, leading the PVSC and KAOS-Fly programs to 2011 Idaho State Cup titles.

As a coach Farsi has earned various certifications including his USSF D license, NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma, NFHS Training and ASEP Certification. Farsi earned his Bachelor’s degree in physical education, with an emphasis in sport management, from Idaho State in 2010. He completed an internship with Real Salt Lake in 2011 and is currently working towards a graduate degree in athletic administration.

Southern Utah University

There promises to be a lot of change for the Southern Utah University Soccer program this fall as the Thunderbirds prepare to enter their premier season in the Big Sky Conference under new head coach Becky Hogan. The 2012 schedule will be highlighted by in-state matchups with the University of Utah, Weber State and a home contest against Utah Valley on Sept. 8. The Thunderbirds are set to face an exciting slate of games that will include visits from Big Sky Tournament winner Montana and regular season co-champion Portland State this October. “The Big Sky is full of parity, on any day any team could win so you don’t ever get a day off,” explains Hogan. “It’s a league with a higher level of technical of players, a lot of good coaches and very good soccer.” Hogan will bring a new style of play and look to utilize the talent on her roster in new and innovative ways in order to help SUU be a contender in its first season of competition in the Big Sky. “We are going to be a lot more attack oriented,” commented Hogan. “Fans can expect to see a dynamic style of play with transitions in and out of different formations.” Another new wrinkle that Thunderbird fans will see on the pitch this season is the transition of senior Rachel Krenzer as she moves up from the back line to the midfielder position where she will be looked upon to orchestrate the Thunderbird offense. “I believe it’s the role of the coach to bring a fresh perspective and evaluate the players abilities to try and identify the best way that they can help the team,” explains Hogan. “Rachel has the look of the consummate midfielder. She makes unbalancing runs that create opportunities for our offense and I predict that she will do a lot at that position.”

5

The fresh look of the Thunderbird soccer program will also be reflected on the roster where 11 newcomers are set to join the club. A solid lineup of returners, including six senior players, will help to offset some of the inexperience of the squad and bring veteran leadership to the group. Anchoring

Thunderbird Soccer

the offense will be fifth-year senior Stacey Brinkman who enters her final season at SUU ranking second in program history with 14 career goals as well as third in assists (eight) and total points (38). The standout forward also picked up all-conference second team honors in the Summit League after leading the T-Birds with six goals and 16 points last season. “Stacey has been near perfect in her preparations during this summer,” commented Hogan. “She is extremely talented and will be a fan favorite with her craftiness on the ball and creativity on the field.”

Another key to the Thunderbirds success in the upcoming season will be the development of sophomore midfielder Kirsten Anthony who is coming off an impressive freshman campaign that landed her on the all-newcomer team. “Kirsten worked her butt off during the offseason. She did everything we asked our players to do to the nth degree,” said Hogan. “I think she will be twice the player she was last year.” Anthony and Krenzer will be joined in the midfield by senior Morgan Bridge who tallied three assists last season, as well as incoming freshmen Nancy Brich, Rachel Wright and late-signee Savannah Spere. The back line for Southern Utah will feature returning letter winners Andrea Albrecht, Kristy Hendrickson, Christine Meehan, Megan Mower and Megan Palmer. Back in goal for the Thunderbirds is senior keeper Charly Booth, who brings a strong mentality to a tough position. “Charly gives us a very competitive personality,” explained Hogan. “She wants to win as much as she wants to breathe.” The entire Thunderbird team is anxious to make its first appearance in the Big Sky Conference and has worked hard in preparing for the thrilling events that can be anticipated. With a new conference, players, coach and attitude, it is sure to be a special and exciting time for SUU soccer. “Everyone on this team has something to prove, maybe they have a chip on their shoulder from being an under appreciated recruit, or they are trying to earn minutes as a bench player,” stated Hogan. “Even I share in that mentality with this being my first head coaching job and with the amount of hard work I have put in to get here. I can promise our fans that we have put a lot preparation into developing a good soccer product and I invite them to come see this great group of young women.”

A new era in the Big Sky Conference begins in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic competition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics. The Division I Big Sky Conference welcomes the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University into the fold as full members. Cal Poly and UC Davis join the league as affiliate members in football, where the league competes at the Championship Subdivision level (formerly I-AA). The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institutions and 13 football members. The current lineup includes four of the six charter members: Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State. Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in the Big Sky, giving the conference five members with at least 40 years of continuous membership. Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State University and Sacramento State in 1996. The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in the Football Championship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, including Eastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played for the national championship in three of the past four seasons. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and

Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota. The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State. While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963. The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer. This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball championship for the first time. In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first began sponsoring women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 197177. The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71.

Southern Utah President Michael T. Benson was appointed the 15th president of Southern Utah University on November 10, 2006, by the Utah State Board of Regents. Dr. Benson came to SUU from Snow College where he served as president for five years. Prior to his tenure in Ephraim, Dr. Benson was special assistant to the president and secretary to the University of Utah, a cabinet-level position on that campus. During his presidency at Snow, athletic teams excelled, winning several conference championships and finishing near the top of national rankings. He was instrumental in establishing America’s premier junior college football bowl game, the Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl, played each December in Salt Lake City. Dr. Benson currently serves as Chair of the Presidents’ Council for the Summit League. President Benson is the father of four children, Emma, Samuel, Truman Taft, and Tatum Anne. He and his wife Debi, along with the kids, are regularly seen around campus and at all types of sporting events. An accomplished athlete, Dr. Benson was captain of the East High School basketball team and one of four sophomores on the team that won the 1981 Utah State championship. He turned down track scholarships as a senior at East to enroll at Brigham Young University on a leadership scholarship, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, English, and history while playing on the junior varsity basketball team. He has also competed in the worlds oldest rivalry, serving as a player/coach in leading Oxford University over Cambridge in the 1994 Varsity Basketball Match. President Benson has completed several marathons with his best time (2:41) winning his age division at the St. George Marathon. In 1984, Michael was one of only 19 teenagers to compete in the Boston Marathon, with his finishing time of 2:52 placing him in the top 15% of all registered runners. While President of Snow College, he ran the St. George Marathon again, this time raising over $50,000 for the athletic department. He currently maintains a seven handicap in his favorite sport, golf. Dr. Benson holds a doctorate in modern Middle Eastern History from Oxford University. His critically-acclaimed book, Harry S. Truman and the Founding of Israel has led to many lecturing and consulting opportunities. Michael regularly leads tour groups to the Middle East where he is eager to share his love for and knowledge of the region. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in non-profit administration at the Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame. The Bensons are delighted to be at Southern Utah University and look forward to supporting Thunderbird student-athletes for many years to come.

Dr. Michael T. Benson DEAR THUNDERBIRD FANS AND SUPPORTERS: One of America’s great coaches once said, “The will to win is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win.” All of us at Southern Utah University are committed to helping our student-athletes as they prepare to win on their respective fields and courts of competition. But more importantly, we are committed to helping them acquire those tools, experiences, and skills that will help them succeed in life and their life’s work. I thank you for your continued commitment to SUU and its many outstanding athletic programs which now number 17 – the second highest number of Division I sports programs offered in the entire State of Utah. For all those who enjoy a football Saturday on a beautiful fall day in the shadow of Cedar Mountain, the benefits of Division I athletics in our community are innumerable. From the dollars spent by visiting teams and fans in our local places of business to the positive media coverage generated by our student-athletes, the University is the beneficiary of these and other positive by-products of the substantial investment in our athletic program. Donors and alumni are even more proud of their association with the University when they see a return on their donated dollars in the form of success on the field and in the classroom. Excellence in athletics will continue to be an investment we are willing to make at Southern Utah University. In addition to those student-athletes who learn invaluable lessons in both the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat,” athletics provide excellent participation opportunities for students in bands, cheer squads, dance teams, trainers, marketing interns, and many more. Our student athletes also represent a large percentage of the geographic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and religious diversity on campus which, I believe, enhances and enriches the academic and social experience of ALL our students. I heartily commend our athletic director, Ken Beazer, and his able and committed staff for their superb stewardship of the funds directed toward athletics. I also wish to thank all the academic and support staff who regularly monitor the progress of our student-athletes to ensure their commitment to “prepare to win” while at SUU and well beyond. Thank you for your support of Southern Utah University and the proud Thunderbird tradition. Yours sincerely, President Michael Benson

Athletic Director Ken Beazer Ken Beazer was named Southern Utah’s Athletic Director on Dec. 21, 2005 and took the reins of the program Jan. 2, 2006. Beazer came to Southern Utah from Utah State University, where he has served as director of athletic development for the past four-plus years. While at USU, Beazer developed and initiated the largest capital campaign in the history of the school’s athletic department, including fund-raising for a planned $25 million renovation of Romney Stadium. The university opened a state-of-the-art library in 1996, while the Eccles Coliseum, the University’s football and track stadium, has undergone a complete renovation in the recent past, including new grandstands, office areas, a new press box and a new track. Another exciting development was the physical education complex, which serves the entire student-body with state-of-the art athletic and recreational facilities. The newest additions on campus include the Emma Eccles Jones Teacher Education Building and the Carter Carillon Tower. The university also owns and operates a 1,000-acre farm in western Cedar Valley and a 3,700-acre ranch in Cedar Canyon. Because of their proximity and grandeur and formal educational alliance with Southern Utah University, Zion National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument are claimed by SUU students as part of their campus. Geology, life science and a variety of academic fields plan trips to take advantage of these national treasures in addition to Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef and Great Basin National Parks, which are also close by. SUU has a history unique in the annals of American higher education. In 1897, the entire population of Cedar City, then a small pioneer town, engaged in the building of Old Main, the first building of the University. Beginning the project in mid-winter because of a harsh deadline imposed the legislature, the men and women of the community donated materials, money and labor to complete the building on time. Today the university campus has grown to comprise 133 acres, landscaped with fountains, tall spruce and pine trees, plazas, statuary, latticed walkways and expansive lawns.
