Prunus Sargentii
Great White
widely planted as a hedge but it is vigorous growing up to 12m [40ft.]. There is a less vigorous variety, Angustfolia which has narrower leaves and is used in topiary. There is also a winter flowering variety [Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’]. The timing and length of blooming is weather dependent. The colours range from light pink to white but the final effect depends on the number and density of petals. Single blooms have 5 petals; semi-double 10-20; double 25-50 whilst the
chrysanthemum type bear over 100. The suffix ‘nioi’ indicates fragrance but this needs warm dry conditions. For seasonal interest a few varieties produce warm colour autumn foliage and have winter interest with bark colours, like the Tibetan cherry [P. serrula]. Cherry trees tolerate most types of soil but need a modicum of water year round. They show best sheltered from wind whilst full sun enhances the display but accelerates fading of the blooms. Does your garden have room for a flowering cherry? l
