Each December people flock to the Distillery District in Toronto to enjoy the magic of the Christmas Market. Cute booths reminiscent of a European Christmas market line the cobblestone streets of the Distillery District, while crowds of people weave their way through to find the perfect gift or to try the mulled wine.

Lesia and I hit the Christmas Market Sunday morning after church in early December. We were in search of the perfect shot for the cover of Student. Lesia, having lived in Toronto her whole life, had never been to the Christmas Market. I had gone last year in the night to see it all lit up, but had to fight off lots of people and the bitter cold (coming from a Manitoban – it really was cold).

The greatest thing of the Christmas Market is the looming countdown to Christmas. I always wonder if it implies “5 days until Christmas” (in a happy, cheery elf -like voice), or “FIVE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!” (in a frantic, panicked voice).

What started as an adventure to find the perfect shot for the cover, ended with the decision to showcase more of Lesia’s photographs. This two page spread captures the essence of the atmosphere at the Christmas Market. It is definitely something I would recommend to do if you were in Toronto in December.
