Tennis, everyone? King (Stone) goes to court against sexist Riggs (Carell).
1
Emma Stone and Steve Carell face off in a smart entertainment about a legendary match COMEDY-DRAMA “Male chauvinist pig” isn’t a phrase you hear anymore, but in 1973 Bobby Riggs (Carell), a former tennis champ settled into a dull middle age, overnight became the most notorious one in all of America—he made it his calling card in challenging the great Billie Jean King (Stone) to the so-called Battle of the Sexes, a match that (Riggs claimed) would settle whether a woman could ever play as well as a man. The event, televised to a global audience from the Houston Astrodome, was a ridiculous spectacle—the opponents were carried onto the court like pharaohs—made ever larger by Riggs’s cheerfully ruthless skill at media topspin. To King, though, the stakes were dead-serious: It was time to put an end to all this sexist racket. The performances, along with the film, are sharp, intelligent and a lot of fun.(Sept. 22, PG-13)
