47 YEARS AGO IN WOMAN’S DAY

f my daughters had their way, a trip to the mall would go something like this: I trail behind them at a 10-foot distance, never offer an opinion about their clothing choices, and generally stay silent until it’s time to pay. Alas for them, this never happens—I’m especially opinionated about clothes that are low-cut, too short or covered with sequins. Something else they can depend on: I’ll never pay full price. We go to the mall armed with coupons and a strict agenda— I allot a specific amount of time (say, an hour and a half), pick the stores we’re going to visit based on who’s having a sale, and get in and out quickly. My strategy limits aimless wandering, which leads to aimless purchases (like sparkly $50 T-shirts). This month, as back-to-school shopping kicks into high gear, I’m also going to use the tips in our fall shopping guide (page 131) to find even better deals. We also have some great ideas on how to save all season long from savvy readers like Jennifer Buddin of Charleston, SC, who reminded me it’s time to switch the direction of my ceiling fan to reduce home energy costs. Also, don’t miss our story about Ruth Moore (page 34). The survivor of a sexual assault when she was a 17-year-old Navy recruit, Ruth fought for decades to get the benefits that she—and other survivors—deserved. As we were reporting this story, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the n Ruth Moore Act, a step toward ensuring that women vets who have been assaulted face an easier path to Our hero, benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Moving and grooving I was really excited when I read the article about the women who started exercise groups in their hometowns [“Buddy System,” June 2013]. I began a walking group in my small town, and while we all want to live a healthy lifestyle, many of us were not feeling very fit due to retirement and life’s stresses. When WD asked our readers to share stories of generous deeds, the response was immediate and heartwarming. Here are a few that show how wonderful it feels to both give and receive. My niece recently moved to a big city and encountered homeless folks asking for money to get something to eat. She bought a number of $5 gift cards for a fastfood place and gave those out whenever someone asked for help. It provided them a way to get a meal with dignity and gave her the joy of helping someone in need.

My friend Meg has made it her mission to do 34 acts of kindness this year before her 34th birthday! She calls the project “34 to the Front Door.” She’s probably completed many more already, but she doesn’t document everything. For instance: She had a year’s worth of laundry detergent delivered to a family’s home and she arranged for a cruise to be donated to a couple who never went on a honeymoon! She has the biggest heart.

My daughter wanted to have a Snoopy birthday party when she turned 7. Instead of having her friends bring presents, we suggested they bring donations for the local SPCA. We think it’s a great lesson to teach young children about the value of helping those in need, especially animals. LYNN CLARK, Orlando, FL

Teachable moment How getting rid of my lame excuses was a lesson for everyone. by GLENNON DOYLE MELTON

I

t’s 8:35 a.m. My girls and I are dashing through the front door of the school as I motion frantically to them and whisper (OK, yell), “Hurry up! The bell’s about to…” RIIIIIIIIING!!! The girls freeze and their eyes widen. My shoulders sag. We’re too late. We were late to school a lot last year, and every time we ran breathlessly into the attendance office I heard myself making silly excuses to Beth, the long-suffering secretary. Our alarm didn’t go off! There was so much traffic! It was my husband’s fault! The dog…I don’t know—something about the dog!!

I want ant my kids to learn that it’s OK to make mistakes and to know that mistakes can actually be the good stuff: Our imperfections can be a point of connection with all the other imperfect people out there. Freedom comes when we’re brave enough to say, “Actually, I’m not fine—I’m having a hard time with this.” And it’s comforting when we inevitably hear the response, “Really? Me too!”

Breaking the pattern By the spring, my “tardy-lying” had become a habit, and it raised a red flag for me. Lying—even in the form of “harmless” excuses—means we’re ashamed. Shame is different from guilt. Healthy guilt is fair, helpful and empowering. Guilt says, “Shoot, I’m late again. Oh well, mistakes happen. I’ll get up earlier tomorrow.” Shame is more dangerous. It’s dramatic, accusatory and crippling. Guilt says, “I screwed up.” Shame says, “I’m screwed up.” Nothing ruins the connection between two people faster than shame and lies do. Anyone trying to live a healthy, honest life must avoid shame at any cost. And since I’m trying to live a healthy(ish), honest life, my excuses were keeping me from my goal. So I vowed to make it right.

My ‘tardy-lying’ had become a habit, and it raised a red flag for me. The next time we were late, I went to the attendance office and when Beth asked me to fill out my tardy slip with the reason, I told the truth. Beth looked down at that form, then slowly looked up at me. She smiled a real, warm, big smile and her blue eyes twinkled. She started laughing. Hard. So I did, too. And so did my kids and the other secretary. Then the principal, who’d come out to see what all the laughing was about, started howling.

We had a delicious, freeing moment together. We’re all imperfect human beings. We make mistakes. Every single one of us. It’s OK to tell the truth about that. It’s OK to forgive ourselves and promise to try again.

Forming lasting bonds When I tell Beth the truth, I’m really saying, “I’m not perfect, but I forgive myself, and I hope you do too.” We no longer just play our secretary/mom roles. We’re friends. She texts me pictures of my kids when they come to the office to request their millionth Band-Aid. She held my hand and talked me through a difficult season in my marriage. I’m so glad she’s one of the first people I get to see every morning. These days she’s actually disappointed when we’re on time. live in the most peaceful place you can imagine, a farm in Milbridge, ME. But even here I have terrible nightmares and insomnia. I flip through TV channels and play Sudoku while my husband, Butch, and our daughter, Samantha, sleep. When I do sleep, Butch wakes me up in the morning by wiggling my toe—he learned the hard way that if he touches me anywhere else I jump up and start defending myself. I’ve had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for more than 20 years. Butch is my rock—a gentle, easygoing man—and Samantha, 11, is worth life itself. She makes me so proud. Part of why I’m sharing my story is because I want her to be proud of me, too, to know I fought to make this country a place where what happened to me isn’t tolerated. ★★★★★★

New recruit My father served in the Army, my stepfather was a Marine, and I joined the Navy at 17 in 1986. I envisioned serving my country and becoming a professional woman. I had it all planned—I’d start as an aerographer’s mate (like a Navy weatherperson), then become an officer. I married a fellow sailor right after boot camp and was posted in the Azores, a group of islands about 1,000 miles from Europe in the Atlantic. It was there, outside a club on base, that I was raped by my supervisor, a petty officer. To this day, the smell of his cologne, Drakkar Noir, brings on flashbacks. I get a tinny, acrid taste in my mouth, like the metal of the knife he held on me, and I can’t breathe. I was terrified, but I knew I had to tell someone. Service members are supposed to report sexual

assaults up the chain of command to their superiors, which would have meant my attacker’s friends. I couldn’t do it. The next day, I reported the attack to my squadron chaplain instead. He said that if I wanted to have a career in the Navy, I needed to get over it. Somehow, my attacker caught wind of the conversation, and a few days later he raped me again. “You just couldn’t keep your mouth shut,” he growled. In the weeks that followed, I tried to simply do my job. I said, “Yes, sir” and obeyed orders from my rapist. It was crushing, humiliating. I had no one I could trust—the base was like a small town and communications were monitored, so I couldn’t even call or write home about it. I was scared he’d kill me. Then, about a month later, I was diagnosed with chlamydia. It was just too much. I needed the fear and pain to stop, so I tried to kill myself. When they found me passed out in my barracks, I was shipped back to the States and put in a locked ward at Bethesda Naval Hospital. I told the doctors there that I’d been raped, but they didn’t believe me. They diagnosed me with borderline personality disorder, saying I must have experienced a “break from reality” and imagined the attack. Years later, I learned that this

I reported the attack and was told that if I wanted a career in the Navy, I needed to get over it. diagnosis—followed by a psychiatric discharge—was the fate of many victims of military sexual trauma (MST), a way to get rid of us without investigation or liability. At the time, I was furious. I insisted again and again, no, I wasn’t crazy—I had never had any kind of psychiatric problems—I’d been raped! But no one listened and I was discharged. ★★★★★★

If I’d never been raped or if I’d gotten help, would I have had a career? Could I have been spared homelessness and these terrible symptoms? PTSD, left untreated, can alter your brain’s pathways over time, making it harder to treat. I am sure that’s what happened to me. So when I heard that Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree was introducing legislation to make it easier for MST survivors to access benefits, I called to share my story. She asked me to testify before Congress and, although I was terrified I’d be disbelieved yet again, I did it. For Samantha. And because I know that America, the greatest country in the world, can do better. Within days of my testimony, the VA declared that it would ease the burden of proof for MST survivors. Pingree’s bill was renamed the Ruth Moore Act of 2013 and in June the House unanimously passed it. And President Obama appointed a commission to address sexual violence in the armed services [the Pentagon estimates that 26,000 servicepeople were sexually assaulted in 2012]. I don’t always agree with his decisions, but I can’t tell you how empowering it is when the leader of your country says, “This is wrong and we’re going to stop it.” I now have hope. My rapist was right about one thing: I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. And that’s a good thing. ✦

2 Tbsp rice vinegar ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes 2 Tbsp plus 2 tsp low-sodium soy sauce ½ small cabbage (about 1 lb), cored and thinly sliced 1 medium carrot, cut into matchsticks 2 Tbsp light brown sugar 2 cloves garlic, very finely chopped 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger 1 lb ground beef (85% lean) 1 Tbsp canola oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 8 small flour tortillas, warmed

In a large bowl, whisk together the vinegar, red pepper and 2 tsp soy sauce. Add the cabbage and carrot and toss to combine. 1 Heat oven to 400°F. Lightly oil eight 10-oz ramekins (or a 2-qt baking dish). 2 Place the potatoes in a saucepan. Cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp salt, reduce the heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and set aside. 3 Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Spoon off and discard all but 2 Tbsp of the drippings. Add the onion, season with ¾ tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. 4 Gradually stir in the wine, then the clam juice and cream. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon, 5 to 6 minutes.

5 Add the potatoes along with the peas and carrots, corn, parsley and thyme and cook until heated through, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and gently fold in the shrimp and fish. Transfer the mixture to the prepared dishes. 6 On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry. Using a 4-in. round cookie cutter, cut out 8 pieces of pastry (or cut one 10 x 14-in. rectangle). Brush the top edge of the ramekins or baking dish with water. Lay the pastry over the seafood mixture and press the pastry against the edge of the dish to seal. 7 Lightly brush the pastry with the egg (if making the rectangle, cut three diagonal slits in the middle of the pastry). Place the dishes on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until the crust is deep golden brown and puffed in the center, 30 to 40 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Pour the egg mixture over the vegetables and gently stir to distribute the ingredients. 5 Bake until puffed, golden brown and just set in the center, 35 to 40 minutes. 1 Heat oven to 450°F. Lightly oil two large rimmed baking sheets. Beat the egg and egg whites together in a shallow bowl. Place the bread crumbs and flour in separate shallow bowls. Add 1 Tbsp oil to the bread crumbs and mix to combine. 2 Slice the eggplants into ½-in.-thick rounds. Dip the eggplant rounds in the flour, then the eggs (letting any excess drip off), and finally in the bread crumb mixture, pressing gently to help them adhere; transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Roast until the eggplant is golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 400°F. 3 Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the cottage cheese, ricotta, 1 cup mozzarella, ½ cup Romano and ½ tsp pepper. Fold in the basil and parsley. 4 Spread ½ cup marinara on the bottom of a 9 x 13-in. baking dish. Top with a layer of eggplant (8 to 12 slices) and ½ cup marinara, and dollop with a third of the ricotta mixture (about 1½ cups). Repeat eggplant, marinara and ricotta layers twice. Top with the remaining ½ cup marinara. Sprinkle with the remaining ½ cup mozzarella and 2 Tbsp Romano. 5 Cover the dish tightly with an oiled piece of foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake until the top is light golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes more. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. ✦

1 Cook the pasta according to package directions, adding the corn during the last minute of cooking. Reserve ½ cup of the cooking water, drain the pasta and corn and return it to the pot. 2 Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. hen your stomach hurts, you may want something simple, like white pasta or rice. But to help get your system back on track, you should eat foods that are rich in fiber. Fiber adds bulk (so your bowel movements are easier to pass) and also absorbs water to minimize diarrhea. A recent study found that a high-fiber diet encourages the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut, helping to reduce inflammation and keep things moving. The Institute of Medicine recommends women consume 25 g fiber a day. It’s best to spread out your fiber intake rather than bunch it up in one meal, which could actually worsen symptoms. Many community rec centers and YMCAs allow nonmembers to drop in for about $10 (or less!) a day, which is much better than paying for yearround access you know you likely won’t use when the skies are sunny.

GET A PUNCH PASS Maybe you don’t have much use for the pool or weight room, but your local gym has an amazing weekly spin class you’re dying to take. Upping your intake of fiberrich whole grains is a smart move for your ticker: The ongoing Nurses’ Health Study found that women who routinely ate whole grains such as whole-wheat bread and brown rice had a 30% lower risk of heart disease after 10 years than those who opted for refined grains such as white bread. But that’s not the only benefit—there are more reasons to chow down.


That’s the equivalent of about ½ cup whole-wheat spaghetti and ½ cup bran flakes.

You’ll keep off weight Whole grains rank low on the glycemic index, a system that rates the effects of different carbohydrates on blood sugar levels. In contrast, refined grains rise to the top of the index. In one study, researchers followed 548 people for eight weeks after they had lost an average of 24 pounds and found that those who ate more whole grains didn’t gain back any weight. However, those who ate high on the index—white bread and other refined carbohydrates— regained almost 4 pounds. Another study found that people who ate about three servings of whole grains a day had lower body mass indexes than those who ate less.

Rescuing the underdogs A passionate grass-roots organization is working to save mistreated pit bulls—and stop the violence against these gentle companions for good. by BETH LEVINE

I

n 2007, a chestnut-brown pit bull named Sweet Jasmine was carried, skinny and terrified, into a Washington, DC, animal rescue center. The dog, a survivor of football star Michael Vick’s infamous Bad Newz kennel (an illegal dog-fighting operation that tortured and killed dozens of dogs), had been badly abused. As volunteer Catalina Stirling helped assess her for placement in a foster home, she felt Sweet Jasmine’s pain. “It seemed like she wished the ground would swallow her up,” says Catalina, who was so affected by the dog’s plight that she adopted her. When Sweet Jasmine died in 2009, Catalina felt she had to do more for other dogs like her. “It was astounding how many pit bulls came into the shelter from abusive homes,” says fellow volunteer Kate Callahan.

As the two friends talked more, Catalina and Kate gradually formed a plan to help the dogs: They founded Jasmine’s House, a nonprofit rescue organization that aims to save and rehabilitate neglected, abandoned or abused pit bulls. “I love all dogs,” says Kate, “but we decided to focus on pit bulls because they’re the ones most in need.”

Fighting stereotypes Indeed, according to research, pit bulls—a general label that covers a wide range of purebred terriers and mutts that look like the stereotypical fighting dog—made up an estimated 30% of the total U.S. shelter intake in 2010, according to Animal People, an independent news site on animal issues. Many of those rescues were ultimately put down. “There are a

lot of myths about pit bulls, like that they’re inherently aggressive,” Kate explains. More often than not, it’s neglect and lack of socialization that cause them to behave badly. Jasmine’s House officially started in 2010, but, despite its name, is not a physical “house” or shelter facility. Instead, the organization is a network of volunteer foster homes run out of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. Kate now oversees the day-to-day operations along with rescue director Heather Cole, and the two women partner with four local Maryland shelters to identify pit bulls in need and pair them with volunteers. A trainer, also a volunteer, visits each foster home to help work with the rescued dogs until they’re ready to move to a permanent home. To date, around 200 dogs have been adopted.

But Kate and Catalina also wanted to prevent pit bull abuse, so last year, the pair began to address the dangerous misconceptions about these animals. With the help of Kate’s friend Heidi Moore Trasatti, a Baltimore school psychologist, they developed a program, Project Mickey, that teaches fourth and fifth graders compassion and empathy toward dogs—pit bulls in particular.

Named for one of Jasmine House’s early rescues, Project Mickey takes certified therapy pit bulls into classrooms to show students how sweet-natured they can be. “We’ve seen amazing progress,” Heidi says. Before Project Mickey, about half of the students felt pit bulls were more dangerous than other dogs. Upon meeting the gentle animals, one young boy with

behavior problems told teachers that the pit bulls were misunderstood, “just like me.” Another student, who had always been scared of dogs, was surprised that the pit bulls weren’t being hostile. “Now I know that all dogs aren’t mean,” she told Heidi. SCHEDULE SMART Do the bulk of your apparel shopping on tax-free days. A quick online search will clue you in to any upcoming tax-free dates in your area. You could save as much as 9%.

ASK FOR PROMO CODES Even if they’re not advertised, catalogs almost always offer a discount that any customer is entitled to. When you call to order, ask the customer service rep about special promotions, and the company may give you free shipping or a percentage off your purchase.

SET UP A SHOPPING EMAIL Open a new, separate email account for retailer’s newsletters, coupons and sales alerts, then delete the entire account once you’ve got your fall wardrobe set. That way you’ll be in the know for fall but protected from tempting offers for the rest of the year.

AVOID APPLYING TO ONLY ONE SCHOOL

To avoid cosigning your child’s student loan (an option that can saddle parents with debt if the graduate can’t pay), have him or her take out a Perkins government loan or an unsubsidized Stafford loan, which isn’t need-based, says Higgins. Undergrads can borrow a maximum of $27,000 by the end of four years.

“Financial aid officers have a limited budget to attract students,” says Brannon Lloyd, president of The College Money Guys, a Houston-based college financial planning firm. “If you apply early decision or put only one school on your FAFSA [the standard financial aid form], that school will know it doesn’t need to allocate as much of its budget to persuade you to enroll.”

FILL OUT THE FAFSA EARLY

Even though most schools have a spring deadline, aim to send in your form during the first two weeks of January. “Schools will already be going through their budgets, and the later you apply for aid, the less they might have to give,” says Tim Higgins, author of Pay for College Without Sacrificing Your Retirement.

HOME EQUITY IS UNLIKELY TO COUNT AGAINST YOU

“The FAFSA doesn’t require you to disclose your home’s value,” says Higgins, and fewer than 300 schools will ask you to fill out a College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS), which does. So even if it’s unmortgaged or worth a lot, your house probably won’t limit the amount of aid your child will be eligible for. But if you do need to fill out a CSS, figure out your Expected Family Contribution at finaid.org/calculators to estimate what you’ll be asked to pay.

Most parents know that Advanced Placement (AP) tests can earn college credits, but few are aware of the College Level Exam Program (CLEP), offered by the College Board, says Katherine Cohen, CEO of IvyWise, an educational consulting firm. Like APs, the CLEP exam lets high school grads earn hours of college credit. The 90-minute tests cost $80 each, but with enough credit, new students can achieve sophomore standing at some schools, adding up to a 25% college savings, Kaplan says.

Remove from the heat and add the white chocolate, stirring until melted and smooth. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and cool for 10 minutes. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours. 2 Meanwhile, heat oven to 350°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. 3 Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy; beat in the egg and the vanilla. Reduce the mixer speed to low and gradually add the flour mixture, mixing just until combined. 4 Drop level tsp of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 1½ in. apart. Bake until firm around the edges but slightly soft in the center, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool on the sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 5 Using an electric mixer, beat the chilled white chocolate filling until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Spoon the filling into a large resealable freezer bag. Snip a ½-in. opening off one corner of the bag; pipe the frosting on half the cookies, then sandwich with the remaining cookies. Drizzle craft glue liberally onto the exposed cut pages, using a brush to coat them. (This will prevent the books from opening.) Wrap rubber bands around the group to hold the books together as they dry. Allow to dry completely (at least overnight). 8 Place vessel inside book cavity.

1 Heat oven to 325°F. Line a 9 x 13-in. baking pan with parchment, leaving a 2-in. overhang on the two long sides. 2 Place the butter, honey and sugar in a large pot and cook over medium-low heat until melted, about 3 minutes; remove from heat. 3 Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the oats, sunflower seeds, almonds, cranberries, flour and salt. Add the oat mixture to the butter mixture and fold until just combined. Gently press the mixture into the prepared pan and bake until light golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes. 4 Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely. Using the overhangs, transfer the bar to a cutting board and cut into 24 pieces.
