SURFERS PARADISE GOLF CLUB - MEMBER'S NEWS - SEPTEMBER EDITION

Page 1

FROM THE BUNKER Dear Members First of all I would like to thank our fantastic volunteers for the work they have done at the engineering shed creating a new covered area off the side of the main building to house machinery, without these gents helping around the place it would be a lot more expensive to upkeep and improve the appearance of the course, my heartfelt thanks to you as always. We hired a tree root cutter for a week and you may have noticed down the side of the fairways where it has been through, the greens team were very impressed with it as it tore through many roots some of which were pretty big, I have attached a few pictures of them for you to look at.

The other thing we did was to take samples from the 3rd, 5th, 8th and 14th greens for testing and I am pleased to say they came back very healthy which has been great for the team and their hard work in following the programme of repair over the last 8 months, I cannot speak highly enough of the team out on course and their continued commitment to improving the playing surfaces and their overall work ethic to making this Club a better place to play. We are about to purchase 1 Gator (on course work runabout) and recently purchased a 4 seater buggy as well for the club, a big thank you to Clarrie Harrison for giving us a very special price on these pieces of equipment.

In other news the AGM has been scheduled for the 28th October, the new lift linking the ground floor and function room should be installed by the middle of October, and we still await approval from Council to flood light our practice fairway. Charges for social and visitor green fees went up by $2 for this year and took effect on the 2nd September, in line with rising costs out on course but I think we can all agree that the course is well worth the extra $2 spend in its current condition. The Board have also re introduced a $2 course usage fee for members who are just going out for a social hit on their membership days this was normal practice some years back but was dropped. (This can be paid at the pro shop)

The value of this contribution from our membership will be felt back on course as this is where all revenues raised will be put, and for example the first $7000 we raise will be allocated to a stump grinder. Last but not least our award winning team in the pro shop have asked that all members going out for a social hit to please report to them before you tee off, the course is a busy place these days and they like to know where to put people so it would be much appreciated if you could pop in and say hello to the team prior to heading out. And finally well done to our ladies pennants teams what a great result for the Club! Take care and happy golfing. Mick GM

CAPTAIN'S CORNER Hi Golfers, A very dry and windy month has come and gone. Still no sign of any signiďŹ cant rain, but the water reserves are holding up nicely. The fairways are still very good and the greens continuing to improve. The mens ďŹ elds are getting good numbers again, which is good for the club. With good sized ďŹ elds comes lots of pitch marks on the greens. Don't forget to repair your pitch mark and do a couple more while you are waiting to putt. A few members have mentioned to me over the last month or two about their balls being taken when playing. I'm sure that nobody takes someone else's golf ball whilst in competition on purpose, but I keep hearing this over and over.

If it's not your ball, don't touch it. It's very frustrating when it happens. (Usually when you are having a good round). Everything else is going so well, I don't have very much to report. So good golďŹ ng Greg Hill Captain

PRO SHOP Hi Members Welcome to the Proshop news for September. We are excited that at the recent OnCourse Golf Awards, Surfers Paradise won the "QLD Franchise of the Year". A thorough team effort and we almost had a near perfect score on the compliance list. Well done to our Supersenior Pennant team who are leading the ladder after 3 rounds.

Ladies and Gents, I would like to say our course has never looked better and I have not seen a better coverage on our greens. As a result, we are currently going through a spike in new members and seeing record green fees. Well done and thanks to Geoff and the team! We are very proud of our ladies Div 1 and 2 pennant teams on their winning season! No doubt there is plenty said in red tees. THE WORKING BEE Hi All, The major focus of late for the working bees has been the construction of the lean-to on the machinery shed. Preparing the ground area including running foliage took some time, followed by concreting in the footings for the posts. Sections were then pre-fabricated on ground and then lifted into position for fixing to the existing structure. The roofing material was then fixed in position, as finally was the side wall. A very professional looking job which will be of great use for protecting machinery previously exposed to weather.

A special mention to the following - Brian Thomas, Dave Muir, Ken Clode, Nev Davey, Bob Dempster, Terry Keating, Gerard Denaro, Duncan Haig and Hamish Rollinson, Peter Groundwater, Mark Bryant and Arthur Tilyard for designing and over-seeing the entire project - WELL DONE GUYS! Other small projects also completed have been repairing the male toilet door at the halfway house, repairing a dangerous hole around the 17th green and ďŹ lling in bare patches with soil. Painting the brick wall at the corner of Fairway Drive in preparation for a new sign, and completing the archiving has also been achieved. Enjoy the warmer weather and show care for the Course. Until next time - good golďŹ ng
