C O N S U L T AT I O N on the Torquay Jan Juc 2040 project is continuing and, in a Surf Coast Shire first, we’ve launched an online consultation portal to ensure you can have your say on the main issues and challenges relating to growth that Torquay and Jan Juc face from your keyboard. The current online forum, at http:// haveyoursaysurfcoast.com.au will continue to operate over the next month. The forum will play an important role in setting the future direction for how Torquay and Jan Juc develop and change over the next 30 years. The 2040 process is aimed at ensuring we can preserve the things that make Torquay and Jan Juc special, exploring the idea of sustainability and how it relates to Torquay and Jan Juc and ensuring we can thereby plan for a sustainable future. Council is using an online forum in addition to more traditional consultation because we recognise that many in our community will not be able to attend public workshops or events and would prefer to provide input in their own time. It is vital that we have strong community involvement in this process. I encourage you to get involved. For more information on the process and dates of face-to-face consultation sessions, visit www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/2040.htm

Green lights – help make a difference

Over 2010, Surf Coast Shire has supported the Municipal Association of Victoria’s campaign to Give Our Streets the Green Light – use sustainable globes for street lighting throughout Victoria. This initiative could save up to 70 per cent of energy currently used on street lighting in Victoria. In order for energy efficient globes to be

used in street lighting though, we need the support of other levels of Government. Over the next two weeks, a petition will be available at www.greenlightourstreets.org.au I urge you to sign the petition and show your support for local government’s ongoing efforts to operate more sustainably and battle climate change.

announced Surf Coast Shire as the winner of its Victorian Play Space award for the accessible playground and facilities at Bob Pettitt Reserve. This is great recognition of the work staff, volunteers, clubs and community groups have put into growing and developing Bob Pettitt Reserve in recent years.

Council to meet in Lorne

Commendation for Torquay Traders

As part of our ongoing push to make council more accessible to all communities across the Surf Coast Shire, this month’s council meeting will be held at the Lorne Senior Citizens Centre on Wednesday, September 22 from 6pm. Before the meeting, council will also be unveiling the original 1888 foundation stone of the Lorne Post Office, which will be placed near the Cumberland Resort – near the post office’s original location. The unveiling will be held at 4pm with light refreshments served. Following the unveiling, a farewell function will be held at Lorne Senior Citizens’ Centre from 4.30pm to acknowledge the services of Lindsay Schroeter, who announced his resignation from council last month. This will provide a great opportunity to recognise Cr Schroeter’s services to the Surf Coast Shire and the former Shire of Winchelsea; as well as to talk informally with councillors about community issues.

Gong for Bob Pettitt

A great success story for council in recent years has been the ongoing programme of upgrades at Bob Pettitt Reserve. This year alone, works have included the planting of a sensory garden while playground upgrades, upgrades to the oval and incorporation of locally produced public art have been highlights in making this reserve an even better focal point for Jan Juc. Recently, Parks and Leisure Australia

Anglesea Music Festival

Over October 8-10, the Anglesea Music Festival promises to be a great celebration of local musicians and the creativity that lights up our community. Surf Coast Shire and Surf Coast Tourism have supported the event with a $5,000 grant through the Tourism Event Support Programme. I urge local people to support the event. You can see the artists playing at www.angleseamusicfest. com and get tickets by visiting www.moshtix. com.au Warm regards,

Surf Coast loses out in

Great news for Torquay Traders at the Mainstreet Australia awards last week, with Torquay Commerce and Tourism awarded for its efforts in running Torquay’s Christmas In July. The project was one of many things traders in Gilbert Street, Bristol Road, Bell Street and around Baines Crescent have run to help contribute to Torquay’s vitality. The award is well deserved and Council looks forward to continuing to work with local traders in all our Surf Coast communities.
