WITH MARGOT SMITH

WE HAD another week with more sunshine than rain – although the rain was extremely heavy when it came. It seems that a few of the men choose to abandon play on Wednesday and I’m sure lots of us would have done the same and once again you have to be out early to get the best weather. So if you want to play in the good conditions during Open Week we still have some gaps in the morning fields. Get your entry into the office this week. Throughout the year we have had a few good winning streaks - two in a week, three over two weeks - but none can match the purple patch of Judy Talbot. She has now won five Thursday’s on the trot and a couple of weekend wins thrown in. She also won the touring competition this last weekend, which is quite prestigious in some circles. Let’s hope the form continues for Open Week. Midweek results Wednesday was stableford for the men. Bernie Dalton had the best seniors score for the day with 40 points,

Men’s competition Players rode out the storm on Wednesday with everyone finishing their round for the par event. As the thunder and lightning moved in, the final groups made their way up the 18th. Mick McLean won the event with 4 up while Bob Spurling was runner-up with 3 up. Peter Gray won NTP on the 7th while Craig Hunter took the honors on the 13th. Saturday was a sensational day for golf, and more than 200 players took advantage of the fantastic conditions. John Williamson obviously thought it was a perfect day for golf, winning the medal with a nett 66, while Geoff Caddy won A grade with a 70. Alan Schultz and Dion Gilbert won NTP’s on the front nine, while Dean Bernasconi was closest on the 13th and Andy Samu the 17th.

Weekend competition With no football to contend with and fine weather predicted the field was almost full for Saturday and the scores were very competitive. Darren Turner had the best score with 7 up winning A grade. In B grade, Ross Robins won the countback from Brent

McDonald with 6 up, and in C grade, David Steele won from Matt Donkers with 4 up. Mary Funder won the ladies with 3 up. NTPs were won by Arthur Jearum, Richard Gribben, Mike Grossman and Frank Fowler and Paul Lata scored an eagle on the 8th. Pam Hill had the day’s best score in the Stableford event on Sunday. Pam had 43 points to win the ladies event. Other winners were Barry Coleman with 38 points in A grade, Bryan James with 39 points in B grade and David Macvean with 37 points in C grade. NTPs were Brent McDonald, Ross Duff, David Adamson and Glenda Deans. Meanwhile, the touring party at Port Fairy was able to contribute to that club’s legacy fundraising day on Saturday and take home some of the prizes. Barb Cook had the longest drive and Marg Hales claimed a nearest the pin, and we probably would have had some more if some had remembered they were in the daily competition! Judy Talbot scored 37 points to win the touring event but it wasn’t enough to beat the locals. Good golfing!

Women’s competition A fine but chilly morning greeted the women for the stroke medal comp on Thursday. One of our younger members Danielle Walker won the medal with a fabulous nett 69. Juggling the school run and getting to the tee on time is not easy, so well done to Danielle. Gillian Connelly was runner-up with a 72. Beryl Westbrook won NTP on the 7th while Anne Taylor hit a great shot to win NTP on the 13th. The women played a stableford event on Saturday and Linda Turner took the honours for the second consecutive week, winning with 36 points. A reminder that on October 21, there will be a special day to raise money for Breast Cancer research. Players are encouraged to wear a touch of pink for the stableford event and pink balls will be given to players in return for an $8 donation. Raffle tickets are also being sold in the pro shop with some fabulous beauty packages as prizes.

Senior Amateur Championships Next week the The Sands will host the 2010 Senior Amateur Championship of Victoria. The event is for players over the age of 55 with a handicap below 25. The championship is a 54-hole stroke event played over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Just when I thought it would be safe not to mention the name Deyen Lawson after weeks of hogging the limelight, he records another great victory. It has been a wonderful few months for Deyen with numerous victories around the state. His latest feat came at Torquay on the weekend winning the men’s open championship. Deyen scored rounds of 71 and 68 on Saturday to finish equal with another young player who has recently joined The Sands, Luke Allen. Luke had rounds of 68 and 71 to force the championship into a play-off. Deyen eventually prevailed winning on the second play-off hole. Special mention to Matt Stewart who had rounds of 79 and 76!!!

but the best scores for the day were from Warren Heinnen and Frank Denahy both with 41 points winning A and C grade respectively. Tony Leeds won B grade with 37 points. NTPs were Peter Hester, Alan Nanscawen and Colin Favre. The women are playing stroke every week in the lead up to Open Week – which will clearly be good for their golf. Best score for the day was Myrell McConachy winning Div 2 with nett 72. Judy Talbot as previously mentioned had her win with nett 75 in Div 1 and Helen Smith won Div 3 with nett 79. Jill Emerson won the putting competition with 32 putts and the NTPs were won by Sue Britnell, Margot Parton, Jo Mehegan from Rosebud and Dot Hermann.
