The Sands Torquay is proud to have Darrell Brown as head professional. With over 25 years experience, including 13 years as head professional at Geelong Golf Club and 6 years at The Sands Torquay, Darrell has been AAA Rated since 1990. His golfing career has seen him play on the Australian Tour for seven years, accumulating an amazing 14 holes in one. Darrell understands the conditioning and skill necessary to improve a golf game making him an exceptional coach. Using state-of-the-art swing analysis video and software, Darrell can study a player’s swing and tailor a program to improve individual technique. Darrell works with players of any level offering both private and group lessons. Along with guiding technique, Darrell custom fits players with clubs, including Henry Griffitts. Players leave safe in the knowledge they have the right clubs and the confidence to enjoy them. With his affable, easygoing personality, Darrell makes golf lessons pleasurable for golfers of all levels.
The Sands Torquay is designed by Australia Open champion Stuart Appleby. The 18 hole links style course intriguingly winds its way through the land behind the sand dunes of Zeally Bay, taking full advantage of the natural beauty of its Surf Coast location. The undulating nature of the course with multiple tees to suit all golfing levels is a testament to Stuart’s commitment and passion. The long 11th hole embodies all of the natural elements of the Torquay site – sand dunes, tall native grasses, Moonah trees and rocky outcrops. Thankfully the wind is normally at the golfer’s back, so a well hit tee shot should clear the small Moonah trees on the left centre of the fairway. The fairway splits around a natural slope with four embedded bunkers before rising to a well protected green, gently tucked into the dunes landscape. If golfers keep their focus here and not become distracted by the natural beauty of the hole, par is possible.
