Juniors fly the flag WITH the long weekend came a number of byes and forfeits for the Surf Coast Football Club, however, the junior teams went to battle. The results were mixed, but the improvement shown by some of the teams was encouraging.

UNDER 13S BOYS

Surf Coast Blue 3 drew with Bellarine Sharks 3

Both teams gave their all in the first half of the match. Surf Coast, captained by Seamus Wakefield, held a strong line and were aggressive in defence, with consistent teamwork and good passes. The pace quickened after half-time with Surf Coast scoring within minutes of the re-start from a penalty. Quickly the Sharks responded, scoring their first goal and the pressure was on. The goals continued for each team with Surf Coast twice taking the lead only for the determined Sharks to level scores on both occasions. An exciting end to a great match – well done to all the boys. Best players: Jai Collier and Oliver Rose Grigg. Goals: Jai Collier, Kyle Hymans, Steve Tsatsaronis

Surf Coast Yellow 0 lost to Geelong 3

Yellows had to play the undefeated team of Geelong away, and after a promising start which saw some opportunities go begging, the Gee long team bounced back with three quick goals. Defence dominated the second half, with both teams having chances but not adding to their score, with good goalkeeping from Simon Will in the first half and captain, Ethan Batcelor, after half-time. James Shanhun and Christian Thomas played good games.

METRO N&W LEAGUE UNDER 18S

Surf Coast 0 lost to Moreland 4

It was first versus second as Surf Coast travelled to Moreland City. Unfortunately an early kick off and a plough-field of a pitch took its toll on the Coasters as they slumped to their first defeat of 2011, losing 4-0. Moreland wanted it more, were stronger and kept hold of the ball well; the young Coasters now have to consolidate second spot next week at home to the other Moreland team, Moreland Wolves.

Take on the challenge

AFTER some oranges and a quick pep talk from the coach, the second quarter of the Army Challenge Award starts this week with ‘Handball for your Club’. One committed club in each state and territory group has already won a $1,000 voucher as well as a fitness session at their club with an Army Physical Training Instructor – all by playing the first quarter game ‘Kick for your Club’. These clubs are now in the running to win the overall season prize of $4,000 towards their club. The start of the second quarter means the playing field is level with the chance for a new Victorian club to win a $1,000 voucher, as well as individual prizes just for playing online. The first quarter game ‘Kick for your club’ has seen players, members and supporters rally round their clubs and play hard and fair. To date, more than 4,330 people across Australia and more than 2,400 people in Victoria are playing online in support of their local club. The second quarter game ‘Handball for your club’ offers more chances for clubs to share in the great prizes on offer. “If you haven’t already, get online and register your club to start playing.
