7 reasons to choose Angus A ngus are rapidly becoming the most widespread and keenly sought after temperate beef breed in the world. This expansion is due to the greater profitability which can be achieved using Angus. Here are some of the reasons why beef producers are choosing Angus:

1. Market Demand Both domestic and export markets currently pay a premium for Angus cattle. Feedlots targeting the high quality Japanese and Korean markets prefer Angus because of their growth and marbling ability. Several feedlots in Australia feed almost exclusively Angus cattle for the long-fed Japanese B3 market. This year’s draft of Angus bulls are consistent in displaying Hazeldean’s well known traits of calving ease, fertility, growth and carcase quality. bull over your existing cow herd each year. During the transition you will be breeding productive cross-bred cattle with Angus attributes. These calves will be highly marketable. Angus Australia will accept cattle that are 7/8 Angus or better as “straightbred”. Starting with a cow herd of a breed other than Angus, after the second backcross to Angus the progeny will have on average 7/8 of their genes from the Angus breed.

Be particularly careful to select bulls that suit your environment, your target market, and your cow herd such as increased conception rate, weaning rate, and weights of calves. In some situations cross breeding can be used to maintain a certain breed mix to make use of adapted genetics which are needed for certain environments. A good example of this is the use of Bos

Indicus X Angus cross cattle in northern Australia. You will need to decide whether you breed or purchase your replacement females. You should consider paddock availability, your time, and your attitude towards disease risks.

Crossbreeding with Angus

Crossbreeding with Angus is used in grading up, to reduce calving problems, and increase meat quality and market demand. Colour uniformity, pigmentation, and polledness are other benefits. Because they have a balance of maternal, production and carcase traits, Angus can be successfully used in any crossbreeding program. Hybrid vigour will have effects Angus bulls.

ngus Australia has surveyed producers in northern Australia to increase the understanding of the benefits of infusing Angus genetics into their beef herds. This research, conducted in 2013, involved interviews with over 60 commercial or seedstock producers

either running or supplying bulls into northern Australia. Responses from producers interviewed in this research confirm that using Angus genetics in northern beef herds can have many benefits, and that Angus bulls can be run successfully in most areas of northern Australia if some simple management practices are

Defining characteristics HEIGHT: On average between 1m 40 cm and 1m 47cm. COAT: Short and smooth and can have a dappled appearance. Bull – steel to lighter grey with silver sword through the shoulders. Cow – generally lighter in colour, grey and often slightly shaded with a wheat colour. Calf – it is born with a wheat coloured coat and in the months that follow takes on the typical colour of the breed. HEAD: Triangular of medium size with a good width muzzle, terracotta coloured. The forehead and the brow are in general, a darker colour than the rest of the coat. EYES: Well hooded, pigmented, surrounded by a dominant silver circle with very light grey lashes. EARS: Low set, thick with black or grey hair inside. NECK: Coupled neatly to a sloping shoulder. In bulls of 2 years old the neck becomes thick with a prominent hump. WITHERS: In mature animals they stand out well and are thick. Often notices a slight hollowing depression of the chest. SHOULDERS: Neat sloping shoulders. Bulls’ shoulders develop to be prominent and muscular. FLANKS: Round and large and come out horizontally from the spinal column. CHEST: Broad and deep with a

smooth brisket. BACK: Straight broad top line. LOINS: Broad, well supported. RUMP: Should be an extension of the line of the back showing a broad pelvis and slightly inclined. TAIL: Firm/well attached in the extension of the sacrum, broad at its base, fine/slim at the tip and it comes just about down to the point of the hock. HIND QUARTER: Round and muscular, well filled and come right down to the hocks. The flat part of the buttocks and the inside of the thighs take on quite a light and glossy shade. TESTICLES: Well separated, without exaggerated development. The sack is flesh or grey coloured. The sheath is not very well pronounced. UDDERS: Fleshy, medium volumed and covered with sparse very light hair. Having also internal mammary glands which milk on demand, a pendulous udder is not desirable. FRAME: Long and broad with fine bone. LEGS: Lean and slender, not showing excessive length. SKIN: Fine supple, slack and shiny. HAIR: Flat and soft to the touch. The hair, which covers the belly, is of a lighter shade then those on the other parts of the body.

Why use Belmont Reds? A s a sire breed, the tropically adapted Belmont Red has a unique advantage over British, European and Bos Indicus breeds for use in crossbreeding. The Belmont Red Objective

t its inception the objective for the Belmont Red breed was to blend an average of the genes from the Africander and from the British breeds Shorthorn and Hereford. Adaptive traits such as, tick and fly resistance, disease resistance, heat tolerance and hardiness, as well as meat quality traits, fertility and easy calving were inherited from the Africander. Productive traits, such as fertility and growth, as well as carcase and meat quality were also inherited from the British. Genetically the Africander component distinguishes the Belmont from other Composite breeds based on the Brahman such as Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmaster, Brangus, Charbray and Braford. The herd book remains open and grading up to pure Belmont Red can simply be accomplished in three back crosses. The Belmont can therefore be established by simply grading up from any base cow herd through three generations of mating to registered Belmont bulls, the fourth crop being registerable as pure

Belmont Reds. This allows the Belmont Breeders to tap into a broad genetic pool and retain desirable gene combinations from the parent breeds. With the correct selection programs, the productive desirable gene combinations can be accumulated and fixed. The range and combinations of established breeds included in the Belmont Red provides it with all the desirable traits of the British, European and other Tropical breeds. In Australia the Belmont Red is the only Composite breed that has been developed from crossing the Africander breed with British breeds. Belmont Reds are a tropically

adapted Bos Taurus. The Belmont Breed Society has based its standards on productive and adaptive traits that can be objectively measured and are known to be heritable. Selection is therefore based on accurate measurements of traits that are heritable and economically important in terms of beef production. Any Belmont animal must therefore be reared in a herd which has adopted a system of performance recording, such as Breedplan. The Belmont Red is about a philosophy of breeding highly productive, low input cost cattle, that are adapted to their environment.

The introduction of Bonsmara into Australia

he very first introduction to Bonsmara cattle in South Africa came in 1984 when I travelled as tour leader with a group of Belmont Red breeders and other invited cattlemen to see the breed which had been developed similarly; although previously, to our CSIRO developed Belmont Red and also inspect the comparisons with the Belmont Red/Bonsmara cattle bred with BR semen provided by co-operators in Australia (Belmont Research Station, Tremere and Mt Eugene) for use in the project. Other cattle breeds of interest to all our group were also included in the tour. The hospitality and camaraderie of the R.S.A cattlemen made the trip a huge success, and impressed upon us the necessity to import some of the livestock to Australia in spite of the ban on imports due to the threat of Foot and Mouth disease which was endemic in R.S.A.This reality had to be accepted and the path for importations would prove to be long, slow and expensive. Firstly the protocol had to be established to allow importation from a Foot and Mouth disease endemic country. To Page 25

A disease, which has not been a major problem in calving cattle in Central Qld previously, spread through many herds and many breeds. Calves premature through to full term twins were still born. It was totally unexpected and prompted the development of a vaccine which we have today; but it reduced our numbers dramatically. The survivors were gratefully received and so the Bonsmara breed had arrived from Africa. More embryos entered from the USA, and the gene pool expanded. Australian Braford cattle were developed by cattlemen and women who faced many challenges to their livelihoods. The stud consists of approximately 300 registered black and red Brangus cows, with a further commercial herd to total approximately 1200 breeders. The country is made up of beautiful creek flats with some ridges of lighter forest country. The breeders at Charlevue has to be hardy and economic. The cow has to produce a calf every year with of the highest quality possible, whether she is stud or commercial cow. The stud aims to always cull any animals that fail to provide the right qualities, ensuring that clients will be happy with their bloodlines and traits. Temperament is a strong focus at Charlevue. Quality is quiet! Whether it is a bull, steer or a heifer it is crucial that it does not run around. Most cattle operations are run by all the family so there are no room for any temperament problems at all. The stud sells approximately 30 bulls a year focusing on quality not quantity. Bulls are weaned and worked well with horses, dogs and bikes. They are fed after weaning on a nutritionist balanced feed which helps them develop as strong and sound as possible. This ensures that the bulls have every opportunity to grow strong, it also allows any bulls that don’t do well on feed to be culled. Bulls are then turned out into the paddock for about 12 to 18 months. Once again, they have to do well and handle themselves without feed, or be culled. Charlevue sells bulls at the Rockhampton Brangus Society Sale which is held on the 10th and 11th of October 2016. Approximately 6 to 8 bulls will be offered this year. They will be all semen tested and scanned and also 100 percent guaranteed breeders. Charlevue will also offer a small number of quality red Brangus bulls at the Classic Red Brangus Sale which is held on the 20th of September 2016. Paddock bulls are available to purchase all year round and are offered in strong working order.

Charlevue Brangus has achieved some outstanding results in cattle competitions. A big highlight to the stud was when Charlevue Bella won Grand Champion All Breeds Female at Beef Australia 2009. Charlevue cattle have been very competitive in all show ring competitions throughout the years and plan to compete in more. Another highlight was winning the led steer class at the Central Queensland Carcase Competition in 2014. These steers were all judged on the hoof and then on the hook and the Charlevue Steer won overall. He was sired by the same bull which sired the top priced bullat last year’s Rockhampton Brangus Society Sale, Charlevue Centre Time for $46,000. Regarded by many top cattlemen to be the beef industry's best kept secret, Devons are indeed FERTILE AND EFFICIENT. Evidence and testimonials from around the world support these claims. esearch conducted by NSW Agriculture compared Bos indicus and Bos taurus straightbreds and crosses for a number of indicators. Herefords were used to represent Bos taurus breeds and Brahmans the Bos indicus breeds.

A two breed rotation, or criss-cross, is the way to go for many producers. It is a continuous system alternatively using bulls of two different breeds with each sire mated to the daughters of the other breed. The backcross with a Hereford bull is especially popular to meet market specifications, including MSA compliance.

Lowline success original bulls are still working in 2013 at 8 years old. Coonong Station is vast so the bulls work in large paddocks and sometimes harsh conditions. It goes to show that structurally good bulls will have a long working life and the Lowline bulls are proving their longevity. Sophie Holt maintains the use of Lowline bulls for a heifer’s first calf is a sensible option. By getting 100 per cent of live calves and having 100 per cent to wean is the best outcome for any producer. Sophie says she likes that all the calves are consistent of type no matter what bulls are used. They

are quick growing, black baldy calves that are weaned at 6 months old, around 200kg, and sold as grass-finished yearlings, preferably over the hooks, fetching good prices. Last season, Sophie said they had joined the Lowline bulls with some of their older Hereford cows and all the cows were in calf. Origin – Fast Facts • The Murray Grey breed was developed in the upper Murray River region of Australia in the early part of this century. • The first grey cattle resulted from the mating of an Angus bull and a roan Shorthorn cow. Australian research conducted by CSIRO Livestock Industries (CLI) and the Co-operative Research Centre for Beef and Cattle Quality (Beef CRC) at Rockhampton have found a positive relationship between 'good' cattle temperament, improved productivity levels and overall meat

quality whereas cattle with poorer temperaments have comparatively lower average daily weight gains and reduced carcase weights. "Poor temperament lowers cattle profitability through increased production costs - for example, mustering, maintaining cattle handling facilities and the increased risk of injury to the cattle and their handlers."

rial work at the Beef Quality Cooperative Research Centre in southern NSW has shown that a wide range of genotypes will produce carcasses of acceptable eating quality for the domestic market. The steers evaluated were the progeny of Hereford cows mated to a range of European, British and Wagyu sires. For this market, where age is a primary consideration, growth rate and carcass yield will be the most important traits that determine profitability for the producer. This was borne out in the C.R.C trials, where, with saleable beef valued at $10 per kg, the steers by Page 70.

The trials are valuable because with new technologies for beef production continually being developed, it is sometimes difficult for cattlemen to keep everything in perspective and to get our priorities right. We need to be able to identify and focus on those factors that have a real impact on the efficiency of our production system. However before we adopt new technologies such as these, we must consider two things: Firstly the critical level of expression for each characteristic. That is the level beyond which there is no financial reward for further improvement. Secondly, the negative correlation that can exist between traits, such as between some adaptive and production traits or between growth rate and marbling. The Romagnola breed holds a unique position in the industry in relation to both of these considerations: It inherits the adaptive traits and strong constitution of its Bos Indicus ancestors and, at the same time, is unsurpassed for growth rate and

muscularity by any other European breed. In addition, Italian breeders and researchers have focused strongly on improving the eating quality of the end product to satisfy their discerning customers. At present most of our markets do not pay a premium for quality criteria such as tenderness and marbling.

However, interest in the eating quality of beef is increasing and more markets are incorporating quality criteria in their specifications, such as in the MSA system. The Romagnola is one breed that can be used to meet these changing conditions without the need to trade off performance for quality. Mated to British bred cows, Romagnola bulls not only generate maximum growth and higher yielding carcasses but have already proven to do so without any adverse effect on marbling.

(Sk-Dr Tim Olsen) confers a very short haired sleek coat when an animal carries a copy of the gene. To date Senepol is the only breed available in Australia that is known to be a carrier of the gene. The gene is associated with the heat tolerance of the Senepol breed. Smooth coated animals in tick infested country will carry less tick burden than hairy coated animals. The natural licking (grooming) process, as well as the animal’s inherent tick resistance, greatly reduces tick larvae from maturing. The Senepol and its slick haired crosses, from field counts conducted in Queensland, appears to have a very high level of genetic tick resistance.

Speckle Park

What is a Speckle Park?

peckle Parks, the beef cattle breed created in Canada, are now an internationally sought after breed. They are a carcass orientated yet maternal Pure Bred (not a composite), breed of beef cattle. They are Polled and British Bred originating from Canada. Speckle Parks are moderate sized. Mature cows range in weight from 600kgs to 850kgs and mature bulls 1000kgs +. Calves average 30 to 40kgs at birth and wean off at about 230kgs to 370+kgs. Speckle Park cattle come in a variety of colour patterns. They are predominantly black with white top line and underline, with speckled hips and sometimes shoulders and with a black or black roan face. The second colour pattern is the leopard pattern. It is similar to the speckled pattern but there are definite black spots on the animal instead of just speckles. The white animals with some black hair on the body are considered 'leopards'. The third colour pattern is the 'white' pattern. The white animals have white hair on the body and face but have black points. i.e. eyes, ears, nose, and hooves. The fourth is solid black. There is a percentage of blacks. Page 90.

The solid black heifers are registrable and can be used in the purebred herd, but the bulls are registrable but cannot be used in the purebred herd.

FERTILE, Hardy & Healthy

With their fine skin and hair in summer and a quick to 'slick off' hair coat, Speckle Parks adapt well to the Canadian summers as well as being able to 'coat up' when needed for their notoriously cold winters. They are tough, real tough, you can throw any harsh climatic situation at them and they survive, get back in calf, rear a good one, yet are so easy to feed and come back in condition quickly after hard times, traits that will stand them in good stead in Australian's harsh environment. Early to reach puberty being "British bred" Speckle Park females cycle early and breed easy. In Canada, and now increasingly in Australia and New Zealand, butchers and meat graders are very impressed with the consistently high quality of the Speckle Park carcass. It isn't uncommon to get an exceptionally good carcass from any breed, but what is IMPRESSIVE is

when the carcass from a particular breed is consistently good. That is the case with the Speckle Park. Another IMPRESSIVE fact about the Speckle Park is their UNIQUE ability of being able to achieve a AAA carcass without excess outer fat cover. Most breeds are able at achieve AAA carcass but often at the expense of excess outer fat. Speckle Park can achieve a AAA carcass with minimal fat cover, thus grading YG1-AAA.

Docile Nature

The key to more weight gain and less stress on man and beast. Speckle Parks are docile animals. Their gentle disposition makes them a pleasure to work with. They are however tribal and prefer to be in the company of other cattle.

Breed Standards

The breed comes in 3 colours (see above) and in black. Black animals must have the word [black] after its name. All black animals must have DNA verification before they can be registered. Rarely, there are some animals born with red markings. These cannot be registered. Animals with horns cannot be registered.

What is Wagyu?

AGYU is a Japanese beef cattle breed derived from native Asian cattle. The name ‘WAGYU’ refers to all Japanese beef cattle, where ‘Wa’ means Japanese and ‘gyu’ means

cow. Wagyu were originally draft animals used in Japanese agriculture, and were selected for their physical endurance. This selection favoured animals with more intra-muscular fat cells,

or ‘marbling’, which provided a readily available source of energy. Wagyu is a naturally horned breed and the cattle are either black or red in colour.

agyu is a unique breed that has amongst its key attributes, other than the exquisite marbled beef quality, a high calving ease, excellent (docile) temperament, resilient in the feedlot and has a high (dressing percentage) carcass yield. Most important is the economic value derived from each animal, which is currently 100% more than pastoral cattle, sold at either the farm gate or as a long fed carcass. Wagyu breeding requires patience as it takes time to build up a viable herd and end markets, this then becomes your own economic moat. The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity as it becomes more apparent to Australian beef producers that there is a real need

and demand for high quality carcasses that derive from the marbling prominent in the Japanese genetics. The Wagyu breed is unsurpassed for its marbling and ability to improve meat quality in cross breeding programmes. While this has been important in improving the capacity of Australia’s exports to Japan to ‘grade’ higher, Australian Wagyu beef is now sold globally with 80 – 90% of production exported. Some 10 – 20% is sold domestically, playing a major role in improving the quality of beef for local consumption.
