iji offers a world where time stands still and as the locals say, a place where happiness finds you! A destination providing everything from world class surfing, diving, water sports and unrivalled scenery and culture, Fiji offers visitors a vast arrange of cruising options. With a total of 330 islands, there’s more to Fiji than can ever be seen on a short trip! Viti Levu is the largest of Fiji’s islands and whilst Suva in the south is the capital, the majority of yachting activity and services can be found in Port Denarau, providing easy access to the fabulous cruising grounds of the Mamanuca and Yasawa Groups of islands. However, the Yasawas and Mamanucas – as lovely as they are – are only part of the equation as The Lau Group, in particular, located to the East of Viti Levu is a spectacular untouched maritime wilderness, so unique that this area must be seen to be believed. “Fiji is a fascinating blend of cultures and colour that has something to offer all yacht visitors.” “Fiji is all you could imagine of a tropical island paradise, gentle warm breezes, crystal clear sea lapping on deserted beaches, swaying palms, azure lagoons and friendly smiling people!” enthused Captains and crew we caught up with on our recent island visit to these beautiful islands. The underwater scenery is spectacular - some of the finest, and most accessible dives in the Pacific can be found here: Fiji’s reputation as the ‘soft coral capital of the world’ is well justified. The main cruising season is between May and November, though the islands are increasingly being cruised year round. The local Superyacht marina, Port Denarau Marina, can accommodate vessels up to 85m LOA. In return and in respect of the warm welcome and generosity offered by the islanders, Captains and crew stressed the following: “When you go to the islands of Fiji, it is very important that visiting yachts uphold and respect the islanders traditions by going ashore to do ‘Savu Savu’ with the village chief so that he allows you to cruise their waters, visit the beaches etc.” “You must give a Kava root. Most markets will sell Kava root.” “In recognition of their hospitality and environment you should take some gifts; educational items for the kids... games, paints, stickers etc.” We also heard how - very importantly - surplus medical supplies are always most welcome, particularly in the far outlying islands. The highly recommended yacht service agents in Port Denarau can offer further advise on distribution of medical supplies to the outlying islands (see ‘Yacht Services’ section).
