For those of the Christian faith, The Holy Writ describes the events of the first Christmas night, which included a host of angels who sang about peace on earth and goodwill towards all men. Some interpret this proclamation to mean that because of the child born, there will be everlasting peace on earth between all men. However, most New Testament biblical scholars state that the newborn child will establish peace on earth, but it will only culminate in God’s relationship with man. In his poem “Wartime Christmas,” Joyce Kilmer states in part, “Now is the earth a dreary place, A troubled place, Peace has hidden her lovely face, And turned in tears away…” Regrettably and sadly, as illustrated by Joyce, we live in a time of relentless unrest throughout the world, and indeed, it appears at times that our world has been turned upside down and shaken out. Some believe in a benevolent higher power, and some don’t. One’s right to think as one wants is guaranteed for Americans by the United States Constitution. This constitutional assurance is continually affirmed by brave American women and men willing to give up everything to uphold this American human right.

You are reminded of the ADOBE Community Meeting scheduled for January 18th, 2024. The event will be held at the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel, with social time beginning at 6:15 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The January presenter will be Lt. Ross Teeple of the Pinal County Sherriff’s Office. Ross will discuss scams and frauds plaguing our telephones, computers, and mail systems. There will always be the bad guys seeking to take our hard-earned money one way or the other, and their methods are legion. In 2022, $8.8 billion was lost by U.S. citizens to these frauds, a 44% increase over 2021. And as we know, the thugs involved in this activity tend to focus on the elderly. Deputy Teeple will give excellent insights on how to avoid becoming a victim. This will be a very insightful meeting for all. From the houses of the ADOBE Board of Directors to your house, we wish you a Merry and Blessed Christmas, 2023. Glenn A. Walp ADOBE – “The Voice and Heart of Gold Canyon since 1989”

Payback in Death by J.D. Robb, recommended by Dennis A retired police officer, a former Internal Affairs Captain, is found dead in his home. At first glance, his death looks like a suicide. Lt. Eve Dallas is called in to investigate the death and becomes suspicious. To her, his death looks staged. Her investigation makes her think his death was “payback” for an investigation he conducted during his career. This book is a typical police investigation story, with enough mystery to make you want to know who did it. This was a good read.

The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer, recommended by Leah This book is an exciting tale! It gives the vibes of a children’s book with all the excitement and adventure. But with the seriousness of adult topics. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. I gave this book 5 stars because of how it made me feel. It’s a book that I often find myself thinking about long after I’ve read it. I would recommend this book to just about anyone. Normal Rules Don’t Apply by Kate Atkinson, recommended by Meg R. This is a delightful literary gem that captivates from start to finish. Atkinson’s unique storytelling weaves a tapestry of relatable characters, intricate plot twists, and a touch of magic that keeps readers engaged and enchanted. This collection of short stories challenges conventional norms and invites us to explore the extraordinary in the everyday. Some Hoopla Music recommendations from Tracie I’m enjoying: • The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac - two hours and 21 minutes of 36 memorable songs. • Janis Joplin’s The Legendary Typewriter Tape of 6/25/64 - 23 minutes of eight vintage recordings. • The Best of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - three hours and 46 minutes of 51 songs from Chuck Berry, The Doors, ZZ Top and many more favorites of rock and roll Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini, recommended by Trish It is World War I and the women in Great Britain answer the call to do their part by taking jobs in the arsenal factories as “munitionettes.” It is dangerous and unhealthy work, but the “munitionettes” feel it their duty to help win the war no matter the cost. They come from all walks of life and form tight bonds. To help with morale and relieve some stress, these women form their own football club and meet with other arsenals. The games become very popular and even have their own Cup series. These women work hard, play hard, face the loss of their loved ones, and find new love.

It. Goes. So. Fast. by Mary Louise Kelly, recommended by Louise Imagine reporting for work as a writer and being given lessons in applying a tourniquet, being issued a flak jacket, and instructed in the finer points of escaping from a locked room by rappelling out a window. Readers may know Mary Louise Kelly from her work as anchor of All Things Considered, the NPR evening news show. Before becoming anchor she was a reporter, and was given just this instruction. While the book is interspersed with heart-stopping tales of reporting from ‘the field’ – by which she means war zones – the main thrust of her writing is to document her son’s last year in high school. After spending much time away from her family and missing many of the milestones of her children’s youth, she decides to step back from some aspects of her job and focus on her kids for at least this one year. The outcome, as written in this book, is a deeply felt look at what it means to be a mother, the tug between work and home, and how it feels to contemplate the empty nest. There are several surprising revelations in the book – but I can say no more about them. You’ll just have to read the book. All He Knew by Helen Frost, recommended by Megan S. This book is a prime example of why readers shouldn’t sleep on children’s fiction. The story, told in beautiful verse and set during World War II, is about a young deaf boy deemed “unteachable” and sent to an institution. He faces hardship, hunger, and loss, but ultimately finds his way to hope and friendship. Books don’t normally make me cry, but this one did. I adored each character and found myself invested in what was going to happen next. This is a wonderful story of human kindness. Staff Book Club Pick – Dracula by Bram Stoker For October, our Staff Book Club took on one of the most venerable of horror novels, Dracula. Since Dracula and vampires in general are such a fixture of pop culture, we found it interesting to read the original. Our staff members enjoyed that the book doesn’t spoon-feed answers, but makes the reader draw links and conclusions themselves. We identified themes of transformation, shifting identity, found family, loss of innocence, and fear of the unknown over the course of our reading. Overall, we enjoyed the book, especially for the Halloween season, but was heavy on dialogue and repetition. December 2023 | 11

TIPS & HINTS

ON LANDSCAPING TOMMCDONALD OWNER - SMILING DOG LANDSCAPES

Christmas For the Ages

By Marcia Nelson

“….all is calm, all is bright”. SDL Crew — Summer from Hell 2023

THE SUMMER I TRIED TO BECOME CREPUSCULAR cre·pus·cu·lar /krəˈpəskyələr/ of, resembling, or relating to twilight. ZOOLOGY (of an animal) appearing or active in twilight. Early on, last June, I knew I was headed for trouble because of the heat. It was becoming increasingly difficult for me to work outside without risking heat stroke. I decided that the only way I was going to get my outdoor work done was to mimic the desert animals who are active in the early hours of the day and late evening. I bought lights, long sleeved wicking shirts, tons of electrolytes, and cases and cases of bottled water. Up by 4:30am, I was watering plants or working in the green houses with lights. I set my phone alarm every 30 minutes to remind me to drink water. By 7am, I was done and pooped out. It is important to note that the Smiling Dog crew, as did all others in the construction trades in Arizona, continued to work. My hat is off to them. Unlike the animals, who could pull another shift in the evening twilight, it was still too hot for me. I spent those hours inside, at my computer or curled up with a good book. It was a very long summer.

Every spring I put shade cloth on the plants I knew would sunburn in the coming summer. This year, as the summer progressed, I had to cover new species as I saw them start to burn. By September practically the whole nursery was covered, even the saguaros. Here are a few statistics from the summer of 2023. • 20th warmest for the state. • Hottest June – August ever for Phoenix. • 10th driest for the state.

But is that today’s reality? The news of the day would tend to agree that turmoil and fear drowns out our “Silent Night” and gives pause to reflect that something’s not right. Yet if we remember that the Bethlehem star was there long ago showing the world how far its beams would lead not just for long ago

• 2nd driest for Maricopa County (2020 was the driest).

but for us now to heed

• Phoenix recorded 126 days over 100oF.

and to give us hope.

• 54 days over 110o degrees Fahrenheit. There is a “Way “

• 31 consecutive days at or above 110oF, June 30th to July 30th.

that can calm the fears

• Hottest July on record.

and can restore our joy,

Phoenix set the record for number of consecutive days where the overnight low did not get below 90oF, (this is the point where many plants stop to function and die). As of November 2nd 569, people died of heat related causes in Maricopa County up 33% over 2022.

and dry the tears. It’s found in a Manger and in the Angels song “Joy to the World”. And we all sing along!

It was literally the summer from hell. December 2023 | 13

LIVE IT WELL

What’s your favorite quote about Hope? Here’s some of our favorites:

SUESCHAFFER

OWNER LIVE IT WELL PLACE

LIVE YOUR LIFE WITH HOPE, HAPPINESS, AND HEALTH Hope is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world at large. Cambridge Dictionary defines hope as a noun as “a good feeling about the future, or something that you want to happen.” As a verb, the definition is “to want something to happen or be true.” The importance of cultivating Hope in one’s life has numerous benefits. Hope helps us to control our emotions, improves immunity, alleviates all over health, and reduces stress. Hope directs us on a road to positivity and that is a big advantage in making one’s day happy and cheerful. Having hope has proven to be an excellent source of health and happiness. Hope strengthens your mental emotions and improves personal and social relationships. Hope is an essential component of our well-being. But what can you do when it seems to be in short supply? To start, one can start by practicing gratitude. Spending a few minutes each day recounting the positives in one’s life — even small ones like noticing a moment of serenity in the sunshine or the stars on a clear night allow

one to pause and reflect. The enjoyment of a brisk walk around your neighborhood or participating in a group fitness class may have an enormous positive impact. Most importantly, the action to embrace and to consciously choose to be mindful and deliberate will foster hope and positivity in your life. Hope gives you motivation. It’s the voice inside that says, “Yes, you can.” It’s that voice that makes you work hard, that makes you learn new things, and gives you the incentive to try. When we are optimistic, we are given the motivation to make positive choices and to take positive actions that will move us along the path to success. To be hopeful is to look at the future positively and to see opportunity in challenges, rather than challenges in opportunities. In other words, it means to “look on the bright side of life.” Hope can come from many sources, including friends and family, and even the words of others. That is why quotes about Hope can be so impactful – words have the ability to uplift, inspire and encourage us when we need it the most.

Desmond Tutu once said “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness,” Christopher Reeves believed that “Once you choose Hope, anything is possible.” Martin Luther King Jr. voiced “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Jonas Salk, a medical researcher who developed the first polio vaccine said “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination, and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.” Franklin D. Roosevelt stated “We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon.” Steve Maraboli said “Plant seeds of happiness, hope, success, and love; it will all come back to you in abundance. This is the law of nature.” Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was one of the world’s most influential Zen masters, advocates that “Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.” As 2023 comes to an end and you are spending quality time with family and friends during this joyful and thankful season, may you remember to Live for today and have Hope for all of your tomorrows.

Dr. Tina Marcantel, Naturopathic Doctor

Being mindful of each breath and being aware of everything the body is feeling at a given moment is a tool that keeps us focused on the presence of being. We are not focused on our future to-do list or worried about past events or what might be around the corner; we are immersed in the now.

PRESENT MOMENT PEACE

Why is being in the present moment so astoundingly healthy for us? Because it frees the mind of compulsive thoughts, and when we still the mind we gain both emotional and physical benefits.

HEALING NATURALLY 480-738-1647 | DrMarcantel.com 6589 S. Kings Ranch Road, Gold Canyon

The busyness of the holidays is upon us. There are parties to plan, special meals to prepare, gift shopping to be done. It’s a time of sensory overload as we join the jostling crowds scurrying to accomplish their to-do lists, pushing their way through aisles crowded with merchandise. It is the season for DOING, and it is especially important during this bustling time to remember to balance our doing with our BEING. Practicing the presence of being means we are completely aware of the moment that we are in now. When we focus on this awareness we become the observer of our thoughts, letting them move through our minds without compulsively acting on them. We don’t identify with our thoughts—that is to say, we recognize that our thoughts are simply ideas passing through our minds and don’t necessarily represent our true selves. This attitude brings peace to the body and mind. > edwardjones.com | Member SIPC > edwardjones.com | Member SIPC

A calm mind calms the nervous system, lowering the overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol that makes us feel anxious. When we are at peace we sleep better. Serotonin and melatonin ae released with ease to promote deep and restful sleep, which strengthens the immune system. Presence of being assists us in the awareness and enjoyment of sensory perception. When I am present, I taste, smell, and enjoy all of the ingredients in my food as opposed to gulping my food on the run. I appreciate the touch of different textures of fabric or the velvety feel of a rose petal. When my mind and body are still, I become grateful for my own private symphony that the birds perform as I relax in my back yard. When we are in the present moment we listen to others with open ears and open hearts. We are not using our thoughts to judge, but seek the divine essence of the other. Being completely present with another person means we can truly listen—we don’t just hear what they are saying; we feel the intention of their words. We do not live in the future or the past. It is only the present moment that we have, and each moment offers special gifts that can enhance the joy and beauty of life. Receiving those gifts with gratitude in our hearts gives us peace and truly puts us in the holiday spirit!

By Betty Bowes Hiking season is here – and so is a fabulous new venue for hikers, equestrians, backpackers, overnight campers, and nature lovers of all ages. Earlier this year, Pinal County opened Peralta Regional Park as part of its master plan to preserve our Superstition wilderness, while at the same time making it accessible for people to enjoy. The park hasn’t received a lot of fanfare to date. But all that will soon change when the county finishes its signage and promotion plans. Meanwhile, if you haven’t been there yet, you’re missing out on some of the most spectacular beauty Mother Nature has to offer. And it’s all right in our backyard. From Hwy 60, just drive up Peralta Road. When the paved road changes to dirt (hard pack)– don’t panic. Just keep going. The best is yet to come. About 4 miles in, jaw-dropping views will greet you at the entrance sign. This is where nature meets adventure, surrounded by all the amenities you’re looking for: More than 9 miles of multi-use hiking trails for all levels, an equestrian staging area, a star-gazing node for telescoping, 31 remote campsites, and 20 wide-spread picnic ramadas complete with tables, benches, fire pits and charcoal grills. Feeling great today? Maybe you want to take the Desperado trail. Something a little more laidback? Serenity Loop is waiting. A little family adventure? Enjoy a walk along the Interpretive Trail to learn about local history, plants, and wildlife. Then finish it off with a picnic lunch or barbecue under a shady ramada. Just scan the entrance map for all the trail details. The park shows you a side of the Superstitions you haven’t seen before: caves, sheer cliffs, wild rock formations, and a “forest” of saguaros. Add in all the color-changing magic our Superstitions are known for throughout the day and you know you’ve experienced something special. Enjoy the park from dawn to 10 pm. There is a $7 per vehicle day fee ($10 for overnight camping). Group ramadas may be reserved. Waterless bathrooms are plentiful. And please remember to “Keep Pinal Pristine” with the pack in and pack out policy. Plan your visit by visiting www.pinal.gov/1204/Peralta-Regional-Park.com.

IN THE KITCHEN

WITH MARSHA MARSHADORRIS

CRANBERRY APPLE PIE WITH PECAN SHORTBREAD CRUST This recipe is a different spin of an apple pie and baked in a springform pan. INGREDIENTS: CRUST: • 1 c finely chopped pecans • 1 ½ c butter, softened • ¾ c powdered sugar • 3 cups all-purpose flour FILLING: • 3 lbs Gala apples • 1 c firmly packed light brown sugar • ¾ c sweetened dried cranberries • ¼ c all-purpose flour • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 Tbls butter, melted GARNISH: • Toasted pecan halves/Fresh cranberries/Powdered sugar

STEP 1 Prepare Crust: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake pecans in a single layer in a shallow pan 4 to 5 minutes or until lightly toasted and fragrant, stirring halfway through. Cool completely.

STEP 3 Prepare Filling: Peel apples. Cut in ¼” thick wedges. Toss together apples and next 4 ingredients. Spoon mixture into prepared crust. Drizzle with melted butter.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer 1 minute or until creamy; add powdered sugar, beating well. Gradually add flour, beating at low speed until mixture is no longer crumbly and starts to come together into a ball. Stir in pecans. Shape 1/3 of the dough into an 8-inch log; wrap in plastic wrap, and chill until ready to use. Press remaining dough on bottom and up sides of a 9” springform pan. Cover and chill crust.

STEP 4 Cut reserved dough log into 8 (1 inch) pieces. Gently shape each piece into a 6 to 8 inch rope. Lightly press each rope to flatten into strips. Arrange strips in a lattice design over filling.

STEP 5 Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until juices are thick and bubbly, crust is golden brown, and apples are tender when pierced with a long wooden pick, shielding with foil during last 30 minutes to prevent excessive browning. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Remove sides of pan. Garnish with lightly toasted pecans and fresh cranberries (if desired) and sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar. FINANCIAL FOCUS® MATTRUPPERT If your children are grown and your mortgage is paid off, do you still need to carry life insurance? It depends on your situation, but for many people, a cash-value life insurance policy, such as whole life or universal life, can be a valuable, tax-efficient source of retirement income. And by drawing on the cash value of your policy, you might be able to temporarily reduce the amount you take out from your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). This ability could be especially important when the financial markets are down — you’d probably like to avoid liquidating your assets when their prices have dropped. Basically, you can use the cash in your policy in these ways: Withdrawals – You can typically withdraw part of the cash value of your life insurance without losing coverage. You generally won’t incur income taxes on these withdrawals, up to the amount you’ve put into the policy — that is, the premiums you’ve paid. Once your withdrawals exceed this amount, you would generally owe taxes. Also, keep in mind that any withdrawals will reduce your policy’s death benefit and the available cash surrender value.

CAN LIFE INSURANCE PROVIDE RETIREMENT INCOME? Given the potential tax implications of the above options, you may want to consult with your tax advisor before making any moves. Also, be sure you are comfortable with a reduced or eliminated death benefit. Specifically, you’ll want to be confident that your spouse or other family members don’t need the proceeds of your policy. This may require some discussions about your loved ones’ plans and needs. And don’t forget that life insurance can help your family pay for final expenses, such as funeral costs and unpaid medical bills. Whether it’s providing you with needed retirement income or helping your family meet future needs, your cash value life insurance policy is a valuable asset — so try to put it to the best use possible. As a Marine Corps veteran, I am honored to have my office serve as a drop-off location for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve "Toys for Tots" program. New, unwrapped toys are being accepted between now and December 13th! Drop them off between 8:00am-4:00pm at the office, 6724 S Kings Ranch Rd, Suite 103, Gold Canyon, AZ 85118.

Policy loans – Rather than taking a withdrawal from your policy, you could take out a loan. You won’t have to go through an approval process or income verification, and policy loans typically have lower interest rates than bank loans and don’t assess closing costs. Plus, because your insurer will be lending you the money and using the cash in your policy as collateral, your policy’s cash value can remain intact and still potentially grow. However, policy loans do carry some issues of which you should be aware. For one thing, while a loan usually isn’t taxable, you could end up owing taxes on any unpaid loan balance, including interest. And if this balance exceeds the policy’s cash value, it could cause your policy to lapse. Also, outstanding loans can reduce your death benefit. Cashing out – If you cash out, or “surrender,” your policy, you can receive the entire cash value, plus any accrued interest. You will have to subtract any money needed to pay policy loans, along with unpaid premiums and surrender fees, which can be significant. Also, any amount you receive over the policy’s cash basis — the total of premiums you’ve paid — will be taxed as regular income. 1035 Exchange – Through what’s known as a Section 1035 Exchange, you can transfer your life insurance policy to an annuity, which can be structured to pay you a lifetime income stream. The exchange won’t be taxable but surrender charges may still apply. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. — Edward Jones, Member SIPC.

MAYBERRY MEMORIES AT Z AO THEATRE Barney Fife is one of the most iconic characters in television history. The enormously popular and riotously funny character was conceived, crafted, and portrayed by the extraordinarily talented Don Knotts for the 1960’s Andy Griffith Show. Don Knotts became one of the most famous and recognizable faces in America, remaining a phenomenal success for decades. A former professional actor, Bill Knotts, is now bringing Mayberry Memories, his one-man cruise ship show about his famous uncle, to theaters across his home state of Arizona. In this nostalgic and entertaining journey, Bill ushers his audience into a simpler time; back to the idyllic, fictional town of Mayberry. He delves into the Knotts family history, Don’s early career and how he landed the part of Barney Fife, as well as his movie career with Universal, his memorable partnering with Tim Conway for multiple Disney movies, his return to television on Three’s Company and Matlock, and his many stage productions across the country. While attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in the 1970’s, Bill had the opportunity to live with Don and his wife in Beverly Hills. In Mayberry Memories, Bill’s theater and acting background is on full display as he regales the audience with numerous personal tales and family anecdotes of his time spent with Don over the decades. Sprinkling in family pictures and plenty of video clips of some of the greatest scenes from The Andy Griffith Show, Bill reintroduces the iconic and lovable characters and the actors who made them come to life. Audience reactions to several early career videos from the 1950’s, before Don was a household name, provide clues of the coming huge career that was still in his future. Bill also recounts stories by Andy Griffith, Ron Howard and Tim Conway at various times in the evening and finishes with a quick look at the dozens of famous stars who appeared on the Andy Griffith Show before they made it big. Bill has appeared as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man; Snoopy in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown; Sir Thomas More in Anne of a Thousand Days and many other theater roles. Numerous commercials, industrial films and live shows and corporate emcee opportunities rounded out his acting resume before he decided to pursue a business and teaching career. Bill Knotts has been an entrepreneur and teacher most of his adult life. For over two decades he taught leadership principles, self-discipline, and networking skills to business owners throughout the United States. He earned an MBA from Arizona State University and has also taught college courses in investments, entrepreneurship, business communication and labor relations. He taught seminars for several years in various countries while a contractor for a national stock trading firm. Bill is performing at Zao Theatre, 633 S. Kings Ranch Rd, Gold Canyon, Arizona, on January 26th at 7:30pm and January 27th at 2pm. Reserve your seat on the Zao website www.zaotheatre.org or call Centerstage Church/Zao Theatre at (480) 924-5122. 24 | Superstition Living

When Fabrice and Mairead Buschtetz moved from France to America in 2013 with their three children, they came with the intention of becoming entrepreneurs. Since then, the Gold Canyon couple have launched four successful restaurants in the East Valley, including the elegant French restaurant, Cuisine & Wine Bistro in Chandler. However, they didn’t escape the pandemic unscathed. They chose to sell their other properties to focus on Fabrice’s classically trained French culinary skills that are the star attraction at the bistro. The restaurant has won a Wine Spectator Award for the past three years because of its exceptional wine cellar, overseen by their son, Killian, a certified sommelier. Cuisine & Wine Bistro consistently ranks in the top five restaurants in the East Valley for ambience, food, and wine, according to Open Table. Just in time for the holiday season, Chef Fabrice introduced the family’s newest concept, Quiches & Pies, in early November. The specialty bakery highlights his baking skills with pies and quiches. “The pastry is the essence of what makes our quiches and pies le meilleur du meilleur,’’ Fabrice says. Chef Fabrice uses cage-free eggs, real butter, and real cream, to make both the pies and the quiches taste rich and délicieux. The thick butter crusts are the base that sets off the tasty combinations of flavors for the pies and quiches. Mairead, who is point person for the wholesale and delivery portion of Quiches & Pies, says they are partnering with East Valley businesses to provide the items for resale in coffee shops, restaurants, and other locations. “We will bring the items to you,” she said. “We are always looking for opportunities to form partnerships.” Quiches & Pies will offer about nine different quiches, 20 different pies, and a chicken pot pie. The flavors will change with the seasons to ensure the freshest ingredients. Pie flavors currently include: apple, rhubarb, peach, Belgian chocolate truffle, lemon meringue, bourbon pecan, French silk, among others. Quiches include classic Lorraine, bacon and caramelized onions, goat cheese and roasted tomatoes, salmon, feta and spinach, and Provençale. Visit www.quichesandpies.com to place orders, or to learn more about this East Valley specialty bakery.
