In October, long before Batwoman was the first openly gay superhero, former Aussie TV host, DJ and actress Ruby Rose revealed her naked ambition for us in an exclusive cover shoot

on receiving an invitation from White Pearl Resorts to spend W ttwo weeks at their luxury resort in ozambique, we were determined tto make this happen. After all, if tthere’s an adventure to be had, you can count on Destination MAXIM. c The airport transfer to the esort was definitely the beginning of a huge adventure with many of the models capturing amazing footage of zebras and wildlife as we passed through an official reserve, from the bustling city of Maputo, to reach White Pearl. The scenery looked like it was straight out of a movie, the resort equally breathtaking and the staff incredible from the moment we arrived. Nothing was too much to ask them and they did everything they could to make us feel welcome and our stay as brilliant as possible. White Pearl Resorts is designed to enable the guest to be at one with nature, starting the days with outdoor showers overlooking the beautiful landscape. Activities are all based on enjoying the environment, whether it be watersports, swimming with dolphins, hiking or exploring the wilderness. We were blessed with golden hour twice a day in Mozambique – sunrise and sunset were equally magical. The captivating Mozambique sunrises will never be forgotten especially with our rooms all facing the sea allowing us to watch the sunrise from our beds. Suffice to say, many an Instagram story was shared each morning as it was hard to believe it was real. The pristine private beach and beautiful blue skies were the perfect setting for our Destination MAXIM photo shoots and the weather was incredible despite the time of year — we literally staged a hot girl summer in the middle of winter and succeeded.

First time crew members Simmy Carr (our hair and make-up specialist) and Alex Scapens (videography whizz) slotted into daily Destination MAXIM life without issue as marathon days involved 5am starts for before-sunrise hair and make-up. We were lucky to have international photographer Rocky Batchelor and social media coach/ MAXIM producer Belinda Roelofs join us again to complete the crew. Our days were filled with endless photo shoots in our incredible surroundings and our iconic shoot with the horses on the beach will be forever a favourite moment. A close second is the safari style photo shoot which looked like it was the setting for The Lion King. The daily dolphins just off shore, as well as the local monkeys, were a beautiful reminder of how raw and unspoilt the environment was. The MAXIM team quickly learnt that our models were far more than models – side hustles was the talk at the dinner table with Katie and her swimwear label and multiple golfing company partnerships, Jane and her fitness and swimwear businesses,

Paige and her Pilates studio and entrepreneur Emily and her millionaire matchmaking business. These ladies are high achievers and have big plans — world domination is definitely on the agenda. Speaking of food, our daily lunch consisted of burgers by the pool while working on our tans and the never-ending supply of shortbread biscuits along with three course meals nearly broke us – on the last night we were even given a private space to enjoy dinner and vibe train tunes. Let’s just say the White Pearl staff know how to dance and there’s plenty of videos from this night that will never see the light of day. Luckily, what happens in Mozambique stays there. Words cannot describe the experience of staying at White Pearl Resorts. Simply put, Mozambique is a beautiful country that one can only be understand by going there. They say those that live under African skies are blessed and after our experience, we can definitely confirm that this beyond true. We could go on and on, but it’s now time to meet the girls...

Tell us a bit about yourself. I was born in Bournemouth, England and was fortunate to grow up travelling many different countries and places, skiing and boating and I believe myself to be quite cultured. I moved over to sunny Australia with my family when I was 12, which I’m very thankful for. I grew up in Sydney then moved to the Gold Coast where I went to university to become a Dietitian which is what I am today. What would people be most surprised to know about you? I always like to keep myself looking and feeling good, dressing up and wearing nice things for dinners and going on nice holidays, but I’m certainly not afraid to get dirty and rough it whether it’s camping out with no showers, going on overnight hikes with all belongings and tent on my back or competing in competitions like the Tough Mudder. I like to think I’m a good mix between classy and tomboy.

How long have you been modelling? Modelling is a new thing for me – shooting for MAXIM is only my second photo shoot ever – and it’s always been a huge dream of mine. Although I have an outgoing personality, getting in front of the camera and posing is something that daunted me. The older I get the less I bother about what people think of me and I’m just happy living my life to the fullest and I want the same for everyone around me. When do you feel sexy? When I’ve just come off the beach, I’m tanned, music is playing whilst I shower and then slip on a robe to get ready to go out for dinner. What is your best asset? My hair as it’s natural and I don’t have to do anything to it. Otherwise, my gratefulness for everything I have had, have and will have. What do you look for in a man? Someone who is down to earth, loving and has drive! Someone not afraid of a good time and I value honesty, true happiness and supportiveness. Is that too much to ask?
Wouldn’t have thought so. What’s next for you? Photo shoots, photo shoots and more photo shoots! I now have lots of goals within modelling I want to achieve with this newfound courage. Alongside this, I’ll be launching my own online dietitian and fitness plans so keep your eyes peeled!

Tell us a bit about yourself. I grew up in a small town called Pacific Palisades in California – it’s a beautiful place just in between Malibu and Santa Monica. I started dancing (modern and hip-hop) from a young age and still enjoy it a lot. I moved away to college in Washington, DC and when I returned home I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to take over a Pilates studio in my hometown. Now I live in Santa Monica and still own the studio – it’s very fulfilling to me to watch people’s bodies heal and change through Pilates. Are there any other funny anecdotes you can share about this Destination MAXIM experience? True story: A monkey grabbed my phone when I had set it up on selftimer to take photos so I had to run inside, grab a cookie and trade it for my phone. Monkey 1, Paige 0. When do you feel sexy? I feel sexiest when I first wake up in the morning – this is my most natural state – there’s no make-up on my face, no fancy clothes on and no filters. It’s just me in my rawest form. What is your best asset? My ability to make people laugh.

I try to at least get a giggle out of someone everywhere I go. When someone laughs I feel like they forget about whatever is stressing them out for just a small moment and that’s fulfilling for me. What do you look for in a man? True kindness. I think being kind is overlooked these days especially in the wake of social media. You can tell what someone has or what they look like but you’re unable to see who they truly are when the mask is off.
Got a hidden talent? I can understand Spanish but I don’t look like I understand Spanish so everyone is pleasantly surprised in Mexico when I can help navigate where to go or find out where the bathrooms are. What’s next for you? I’m excited to be invited back with MAXIM Australia to Thailand! I love the team and everyone who works there. Tell us a bit more about yo ourself. I was born and raised in London, England and I’m a bit of a water baby – I’ve always loved the ocean. I used to be a lifeguard, am a qualified scuba diver and I’ve surfed all over the world. I’m really fortunate as I’ve also been able to travel a lot as a model and through representing England at international beauty pageants – this has helped me experience new cultures and meet people from different walks of life. How long have you been modelling? On and off, from my first shoot with Gucci to now, it’s been eight years! If I wasn’t modelling, I’d be working full-time behind the scenes in event planning and event production, which I currently do in between modelling jobs. When do you feel sexy? I’m really into driving sports cars lately and there’s just something about wearing a classy dress with heels and stepping out of a McLaren that makes me feel powerful. What is your best asset? Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m from Tyre, Lebanon and grew up on the Mediterranean shore, in a conservative society, where the simple idea of a woman posing for swimwear was considered as obscene. So, this was my daily motivation to pursue my dreams, assert my convictions and be the model for my very own swimwear JK SWIMWEAR. Aside from modelling, I am a certified yoga trainer, teaching in my own yoga studio, JK Fitness Space – vinyasa yoga, yin yoga and aerial yoga. How long have you been modelling? Driven by my hunger to prove myself, I headed to the world of beauty pageants, when I was only 18, and piled on one title after another and one exciting participation after another. From Miss Lebanon in 2009 to Miss Bikini Universe and Miss Beauty Arab in 2013.
In 2015, I participated as well in the third season of Dancing with the Stars Middle East. With two songs launched in 2014 and appearing in a Lebanese movie titled Zafafian in 2017, I set the bars very high. Yet, I decided to move into the world of entrepreneurship creating my own lingerie brand Marry Jane Lingerie, followed by my own sportswear line JK Sportswear. SPOTLIGHT When do you feel sexy? I definitely get in my zone when I’m in front of the camera — no matter what the situation or environment around me may be. I’m a total flirt with the camera and I like to give it my all. What is your best asset? Physically – my smile! I think everyone has their best smile when it’s candid, mid-laugh or while you’re just thinking and smiling about whatever it is that is on your mind. What have you learnt about men over the years? Everything I need to. Men are actually quite simple when it comes down to it. The key is learning to understand them and the way that they think. It’s us girls who men have to look out for! They could probably live an entire lifetime and still not be able to confidently say they’ve figured out women. We’re complicated. Tell us a bit about yourself. What’s next for you? Well, here’s a plot twist – I’ll be opening the very first keto restaurant based out of Los Angeles. It has been my dream, my passion, my baby… basically, my entire life has been dedicated to creating niKETO. Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m a small-town country girl who’s been studying science degrees and working in bookkeeping and real estate until I became a MAXIM cover girl a few months ago – this has changed the ball game in modelling opportunities for me. How long have you been modelling? I’ve been involved in the industry since I was 15 but only recently started taking it a bit more seriously in the last 12 months. I don’t rely on modelling as I’m also a bookkeeper and studying exercise science. So, there’s never all my eggs in one basket – there are many avenues I’m still assessing. What is your best asset? My sweet urge to succeed. I’m very determined and have been since I was a little girl. I’ve learnt to enjoy the journey, and the smaller victories it requires, to reach my ultimate goals. When do you feel sexy? When I’ve been looking after my

health and keeping fit because it makes me feel strong, confident, unstoppable, bad-ass and beautiful. What’s one thing men should always know about women? We want happiness for the ones we love. Our feelings are always very passionate and it’s only because we care so much. Women are incredible. What do you look for in a man? I don’t necessarily look for anything – if there is a genuine connection and chemistry I can feel, then that’s all I need to know. Describe your ideal date. Anything outdoors and active is always so much fun or… a road trip. What’s the weirdest thing someone has sent you via social media? Whilst on this trip with Destination MAXIM in Mozambique – you know, Africa, on the other side of the world?! – I get this message, “Hey, are you in Africa at the moment? Let’s catch up, I’m next door.” What?!
Where would you like to be in five years? Well, one of the things attracting me to modelling is the opportunity it provides me to travel and work with a variety of clients in Australia and abroad. In five years I’d like to be seen as somebody with a diverse portfolio of clients in the fitness/ swimwear industry. The world is my oyster!

What would people be most surprised to know about you? I’m actually incredibly shy and have been my whole life. The only reason I entered pageants was to try and break this. Even today, I’m still more on the reserved side and struggle in certain settings. What is your best asset? Kindness – I always pride myself on this one thing. After a person meets me, if they leave feeling only one thing, I hope it’s, “Wow, she’s so nice.” Physically? Well, my dad gave me pretty good legs. Thanks, Dad! When do you feel sexy? At the beach in a bikini, tanned and happy. The ocean is easily my happiest place on earth and when I’m happy and laughing in the sun, I feel very sexy. What have you learnt about men over the years? Don’t try and change a man.

he season of holiday and office parties, work drinks and corporate and family lunches is almost upon us, and the power of the festive period is such that even the most disciplined men find themselves seduced by fried finger foods, turkey buffets and free champagne. Memories of Dry July and the Spring gym offensive are long gone, networking and small talk reigns supreme and November-December becomes one big, bloated, riotous, tinselcovered blur. For the most extroverted of people this time can be daunting, but for others the very thought of navigating latenight karaoke and office Christmas party dos-and-don’ts can be simply terrifying. In order to accommodate and thrive with such a demanding social calendar, I’ve compiled this survival guide to help you make it to the New Year looking (if not feeling) serene, strong and smugly superhuman: 3 4

NETWORK, DON’T SELL
UP YOUR PRE-GAME
Love it or hate it, networking has become an essential part of the silly season routine but the term still congers up images of slimy executives in ill-fitting suits handing out business cards like gold bullions. Despite this bad reputation, there are still few more effective ways of forging relationships than in-person meetings or events. Just remember, you are there to meet people — that is the entire purpose of the event. This is not the time to sell a product or service. If someone seems particularly interested, get his or her contact details and follow up the next day, but during party hours, curb your enthusiasm and avoid a sales pitch.
Preparation starts hours before the cocktails kick in and if experience has taught us anything, it’s that drinking alcohol on an empty stomach is a decidedly bad idea and may end in “hey u up?” texts to your ex and/or waking up in a strange flea-ridden share house owned by your gym buddy’s steroid dealer (don’t ask). Start your morning with a healthy breakfast containing 10-20g of protein and above all, don’t skip meals throughout the day with the goal of ‘banking calories’ for the night’s festivities. An hour before the event, eat another protein-filled snack: boiled eggs, hummus and celery, or lean chicken breast are all great options, and will allow you to drink more, stay up longer, ward off a hangover and keep regrettable behaviour at bay.
KNOW YOUR TAGLINE At every event, you will inevitably be asked what you do or the company you work for. To avoid the uncomfortable (and often uninspiring) fiveminute ramble, have a one-liner ready that goes just beyond your title. Rather than saying “I’m an Assistant Brand Manager” give a little more information – “I’m an Assistant Brand Manager with an exciting start-up, XYZ Vitamins”. Not only will you appear personable and enthusiastic, you may open doors and create contacts in both professional and personal arenas.

EMPLOY THE POST-PARTY DETOX
AVOID THE TECH TOYS
Gifts are great, but according to etiquette experts, in the office they flow in one-direction – downward. The boss buys presents for the staff. The staff doesn’t by presents for the boss. If you have been invited to someone’s house, bring a bottle of wine or flowers to say thank you, but be aware, it is perfectly acceptable for your host to open and serve it the same night – in fact, 52% of people expect this to be the case. Try not to be dismayed that the vintage Krug you brought is being lavished on the undiscerning palates of strangers, or bring it unchilled – it’s less likely to be opened that night.
Speaking of drinks… it has been clinically proven that alcohol inhibits sleep, yet when you get home from a Fireball-infused party, often your bed is the first place you want to go. Before your head hits the pillow though, there are two things you need to do to kick-start the detoxification process. Firstly, grab a tall glass of water, and add one tablespoon of Activated Charcoal powder to it. Activated Charcoal is a tasteless black powder available from chemists and health food shops that will bind to the toxic byproducts of alcohol and take them out of your system, limiting the side effects of copious drinking — this is as close to a miracle cure as you’ll get for under $20. Secondly, eat a banana to help restore your potassium levels. The loss of this mineral when drinking contributes to the dehydration symptoms associated with a hangover.
While most of us have gotten better about breaking those annoying i-Phone habits, like turning off the camera flash and avoiding ‘phubbing’, there are still a few things to remember. Googling something is not part of a conversation, and selfie attempts should be limited to five – or 30 seconds worth. Any longer than this and you run the risk of interrupting the rhythm of the room and not everyone wants to stand around you while you find the best angle and lighting for your bone structure. Ideally, leave your phone in your pocket for the entire evening – the rest of your Instagram feed will still be there when you get home.
GET PSYCHED Research performed by social psychologist Amy Cuddy has shown that an assertive physical stance can affect hormone levels in your brain. Employ the ‘Superman’ pose by putting your feet shoulder-width apart, your hands on your hips, your shoulders back and your head up — then take deep breaths. Doing this for two minutes pre-party will raise your testosterone and lower your cortisol, boosting energy, positivity and confidence.
POP A PROBIOTIC If you are not already taking a broad-strain probiotic, now is the time to start. Researchers at the University of Colorado have discovered that good bacteria may protect the brain against harmful effects of stress (these include memory loss and anxiety). Likewise, a study published in PLoS has found that probiotics (specifically those containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus) significantly reduced stress and anxiety-like behaviours, and we all know how stressful the combination of sleep deprivation and gift shopping can be.
DON’T RUN IT OFF It may feel virtuous to sweat it out after a night of excess, but in reality it’s not a good idea to exercise with a hangover. Even modest dehydration (caused by a pint or two) will compromise performance and mental judgement and will impair the ability to exercise or compete. At the same time the circulating levels of acetaldehyde make it difficult for the liver to control blood glucose levels, putting further strain on the organ. And what about a quick drink post-gym? Not such a clever move. Alcohol’s dehydrating effects and its ability to impair liver function compromise our ability to replenish glycogen (sugar) needed for aerobic activity, potentially causing long-term damage. If you want to get into your best shape, having a drink post-exercise is not the way to achieve it.
REMEMBER YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION According to a Deloitte Mobile consumer survey, 88% of all Australians now own smartphones and this number continues to rise, which means every year, it becomes easier for silly season transgressions to be captured digitally. When you are thinking about ordering that extra round of shots, or employing some creepy Harvey Weinstein-inspired moves towards the office assistant, remember that nearly every adult under the age of 35 can take your photo in an instant. Save the crazy antics for the comfort of your own home, buddy.

BE A BETTER BOOZER
LOOK AFTER YOUR LIVER
USE YOUR FULL NAME
Experiments have shown that clear liquors, such as vodka and gin, tend to cause hangovers less frequently than dark ones, like whisky, red wine and tequila. Darker liquids contain higher levels of congeners (i.e. Methanol) and studies suggest that methanol is strongly associated with hangover symptoms. In fact, specific studies compared the effects of vodka (lowest of all spirits in congeners) and whisky, and in all results, both the frequency and intensity of hangovers were greater for whisky. To avoid a sugar high, also avoid mixers that contain fruit juices, sweet creams, soft drinks and flavoured syrups. Put simply, stick to vodka with lemon and sparkling water – your liver (and your head) will thank you later.
’Tis the season to clink champagne glasses, but as the body’s primary detox factory, your liver takes the brunt of the hedonistic holiday period. Thankfully, a study of 55 young, healthy individuals show that taking prickly pear extract five hours before drinking reduced the risk of a severe hangover by 62%. Although this isn’t a license to drink to excess, it is a sure-fire investment in headache prevention. To guarantee the long-term health of your favourite organ, eat foods rich in sulphur, like cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli. These vegetables help the liver to process alcohol and expel it from the body. While you’re at it, if you can’t say no to a fried spring roll, also consider adding dandelion, globe artichoke and milk thistle to your detox regime. These herbs will help bile production to process fats, easing strain on the liver.
Yes, it’s a little 007-ish, but let’s face it, a lot of people are terrible putting names to faces. Introducing yourself with your full name helps distinguish you from the seas of Matts and Marks they’ve met over the last week. Knowing your last name also makes it easier for people to find you on sites like LinkedIn so you can stay connected. It’s Bond, James Bond.
FRONTLOAD YOUR WEEK Use your daily commute to answer emails and plan your week so that you can blast through as much work as you can juggle on Monday and Tuesday. This will free up the rest of the week for lunches, meetings and nursing that post-party body. Similarly, push past the pain barrier and schedule gym classes and workouts for early in the week when your motivation and energy levels are high and your calendar has space. If you can keep Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday as per normal, overindulgence later in the week won’t leave such a dent in your work performance and your muscle tone. Your January body will thank you for it.

SPREAD THE FESTIVE CHEER Make your presence a gift to those around you – studies show your attitude does rub off. Researchers have found that people subconsciously mimic facial expressions causing them to pick up on other people’s emotions – both positive and negative – and the effect is even stronger when people are drinking. The takeaway: to extend the life of the party (and your relationships) hashtag ‘positive vibes’ and get into the silly spirit.
BE CLEVER WITH CANAPÉS Canapé trays may elicit a momentary squeal of delight, but beware – they can be the cause of many a diet’s undoing. The good news? There is no need to abstain from cocktail hour as long as you follow these simple rules: Avoid anything deep fried or too beige – generally, these bites will be high in trans fats and carbohydrates and highly processed. Instead search for protein – smoked salmon, raw fish, grilled meats: these foods are the best choices. They are less likely to be coated in creamy sauces and generally higher in nutrient levels and essential fatty acids. Protein will also help you feel fuller for longer and prevent the all-too-common late night Gyro (with chips) emergency. If you are eating out and know the restaurant ahead of time, scope out the menu online before you go and decide on the healthy option to order. This will prevent the lack-of-concentration-quick-menuscan while trying to entertain clients or your date and allow you to stick to your health goals without too much sacrifice.
BE NICE WITH N.A.C One of the major stressors alcohol places on your system is antioxidant depletion. Metabolising alcohol uses glutathione, an amino acid that serves as one of the body’s most powerful free radical fighters. Taking 500mg of N.Acetyl Cysteine daily can help replenish antioxidants while clearing out toxic metabolites that are generated by the liver’s breakdown of alcohol. Your New Year’s Day will look much brighter with a little N.A.C.

Do what you have to do early, like talk to the host or the person you want to schmooze. Tick your boxes first and then you can either drink and relax or leave early with your head held high. Nobody wants a guest who hides in the corner drinking free grog before doing the rounds, so ‘eat eat your frogs frogs’, do the things you came to o do and then move forward. Plan your party for the best outcomes in work and play.
Signs of overindulgence are likely to appear first around your eyes. This is because the skin that surrounds your blinkers is paper-thin (0.3 -0.5mm, as opposed to facial skin that is 1-1.6mm thick). This skin is also lacking in sebaceous glands that maintain the integrity of the protective barrier. When blood vessels dilate as a result of too many Wh late e nights, they can become visible through the delicate skin in the form of dark circles and puffiness. A good eye serum marketed towards male skin will help to support this area and lesssen telltale signs of debauchery. Similarly, if you’ve been appreciating the festive cocktails a little e too much, you’ll need an industrial-strength moisturiser to get you through the summer m nths. Alcohol strips the body of moisture, mo leavving you with skin that can appear sunken and dry, and a facial moisturiser with hyaluronic acid will give you the gold standard in hydration – it acts like a sponge to hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. Hydrate inside and out to maintain that party face.
BE PROTEIN SAVVY Where possible, time your drinking. Research from Penn State University shows that alcohol decreases protein synthesis by 15-20% after 24 hours, but not sooner. To prevent this decline, try supplementing with the leucine. Alcohol blocks muscle building at a chemical level by inhibiting the action of leucine, the most anabolic of the branched-chain amino acids. Taking a dose the day after drinking can help to override the inhibition, boosting muscle mass and keeping that six-pack summer ready.
BEAT Bloating ber of things: fizzy dri fatigue are all common culprits. If you find your stomach adventuring over your waistband this party season, don’t worry. Invest in some curcumin tablets – curcumin is an anti-inflammatory compound that heals bloating and distention. Triphala is another Ayurvedic herbal blend that will keep your tummy trim, taught and terrific – in fact, this Indian secret is a blessing for weight loss too: studies show people that take the blend daily for two months lose up to 5kgs, so balance egg-nog overload with Triphala.
STROKE AN EGO If all else fails, and socialising isn’t going your way, compliment people. here are tons of athletic benchmarks out there if you want to measure progress — nailing a double bodyweight deadlift, pumping out 10 strict unbroken pullups or achieving a sub 7-minute 2km row — BUT whilst these challenges can be a great indicator of overall strength and fitness, they also overlook some huge factors that may well contribute to your appearance, gains (or lack thereof), and any forthcoming injuries. Being aware of your weaknesses is only half the equation. The key to becoming bulletproof is finding the most practical and effective ways to address those weaknesses so you can get bigger and stronger for longer. Here are a few of my favourite things that will get you back on track to being the badass you always knew you were. You can incorporate any of these exercises into both your warmups and main strength sessions as accessory movements or pop them all together in a circuit for a comprehensive, challenging and “functional” workout. As always, quality trumps quantity.
G@=89ʔ6C5F8 F9J9FG9 @IB;9 This reverse lunge variation encourages a posterior weight shift to take pressure off the front knee. Do the reps in a slow and controlled fashion and focus on keeping your weight on the heel of the working leg, pulling through the glute as opposed to pushing through the quad, to return to upright. If you don’t have a slideboard, you can use a towel on a lifting platform. Master the bodyweight variation before loading.
TURKISH GET UP
LANDMINE TWISTS
The Turkish Get Up requires shoulder stability and control (in anterior, lateral, and overhead positions), core strength, and leg drive — all things that are important to lifting heavy-ass weights. It helps develop a sense of body control, co-ordination and awareness given that you have to move through a large range of motion without compromising structural integrity or losing your balance. You also have to stabilise the kettlebell from rotating around your wrist, which takes a lot of rotator cuff involvement.
The better you get at stabilising the spine, the better you’ll be at moving your limbs faster and more forcefully. This “anti-rotation” exercise requires you to maintain a ton of tension in the torso from start to finish — you’re essentially in a standing plank, twisting to one side while pivoting with the feet. Lower the bar close to the thigh and under control before moving it more explosively back up. The movement starts with the hips. The bar coming down to the side will load the hips and core muscles, much like a coil.
TOP TIP There’s a huge correlation between ACL and hamstring injuries and having weak calves. Add in 2 x 15 Single Leg Calf Raises at the end of your sessions, and try pausing for 5 secs in the bottom of the stretch position, 3 secs in the top contraction. Strengthening and mobilising your feet and ankles will also transfer over into strength gains with your bigger lifts, especially the squat.
RING ROW WITH ROTATION In this horizontal pulling variation, you start with palms facing down (pronated) and finish with palms facing up (supinated). This gives you an element of external rotation that isn’t found in your traditional ring rows. Besides being a great addition for the rotator cuff, it’s also a shoulder saver. Using the rings enables you to rotate freely which is great for shoulder health, and you can’t escape using your entire core to maintain an inverted plank position throughout.
SORENSON HOLD The problem with the lower back is that once we have hurt it, we tend to avoid it. This is not the answer. In this posterior chain focused isometric hold, you must keep your torso in a solid horizontal position by engaging your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back. This is a super effective, low impact and safe way to strengthen the lower back extensors (and the rest of the core musculature). The regression would be an isometric reverse hyper hold off a flat bench.

WHINGE-PROOF CHEAT SHEET If you’re known as the “I have a sore…” guy, then here’s your go-to whinge-proof cheat sheet for getting strong while staying safe.
SHOULDERS
Swap out your standard Barbell Military Press for a KB Filly Press. One arm stays in rack hold position while the other moves. The shoulder and scapula benefits from more freely moveable loads, there is better activation of the shoulder stabilisers in all directions and there is less sheer force through the elbows.
BACK
Swap out Pullups for Ring/Towel Pullups. A freely movable grip allows for more natural movement of the shoulders. The awkwardness of the towel means your grip is challenged a lot more. Strong grip = strong back.
ABS
Swap out crunches for “anti-movements”. Being able to resist against flexion, lateral flexion, extension, and rotation will greatly improve your core stability and help prepare you for the “real world”. Think Pallof Press Variations, Side Planks, Planks and Reverse Hyper Holds.
LOWER BACK
Swap out traditional Deadlifts for Trap Bar or Kettlebell Deadlifts. The loading position of these two variations with the hands beside the body, minimises the involvement of the lower back, and using Kettlebells encourages unilateral pelvic stability. If range of motion is an issue, elevate the starting position using weight plates.
GLUTES
Swap out Back Squats for Barbell Glute Bridges and Zercher Reverse Lunges. If mobility or pain limit your range of movement in the squat, both of these exercises are safe and effective ways of targeting the glutes while reinforcing a neutral and stable spine.

Death Stranding Few games have been more shrouded in mystery than Death Stranding. But what else should we expect from the eccentric genius of Hideo Kojima? This is the brain behind the Metal Gear series, known for its immersive gameplay, bizarre narratives and even stranger characters. Death Stranding is his newest creation and it takes the iconic Kojima style to the next level. To answer your first question; yes, that is Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame in those screenshots. Only it’s not really. He plays protagonist Sam Bridges and — alongside a number of other well-known actors such as Mads Mikkelsen — has been so brilliantly motion-captured you’d swear you were watching a movie. Lengthy cutscenes flood the game, with quality performances and excellent dialogue helping to sell the story in a way well most games simply can’t match. That story is centred around human connection. Unfolding in the USA, civilisation has broken down into walled-off 4 4

societies distanced by Badlands controlled by renegades and strange beasts. It’s your mission to help reconnect these cities — using the titular strands — and to reestablish a sense of society. This doesn’t just play out behind the scenes. The game you’re playing is connected to the games being played by other people all over the world. While you don’t interact with others in an MMO style, the actions of other players impact your world. For example, you can leave a package of items you don’t need that will populate in someone else’s game. Or you can leave a motorbike in a handy place, or a ladder. Such actions can be liked by your fellow players, which acts to further connect the millions of worlds out there. The gameplay is, well, hard to explain; this is a Kojima game. It involves exploration and survival through large open-world areas. You’ll need to manage your inventory on an unprecedented level, as elements breakdown, sometime beyond repair. Everything you choose to carry with you
impacts your weight, too, and how you move. Even packing your bag without an even weight distribution will make you lopsided. At least unlocking hoverboards, bikes and other equipment can ease the burden. This is just the start of the eccentricities in this game. It’s unique, there’s no doubt. Did we mention you’re carrying a baby that you need to rock to sleep with motioncontrols, sing to and otherwise placate? Were serious! And we can’t even describe what happens when you die. There’s more traditional fun to be had, of course. Such as combat that plays out from the third-person in a way MGS fans will feel at home with. And the game is visually stunning, showing off the true power of the PS4. But bottom line; you’re just going to have to jump in and experience this weird world for yourself. BY C H R I S STEAD
What’s the Word? Sporadically through the year, Sony hosts State of Play digital conferences. They’re similar to the big E3 conferences, but are streamed online, dumping a tonne of news and content on eager gamers. One such event just unfolded; here is everything you need to know. ● The highly anticipated sequel The Last of Us Part II from legendary developer Naughty Dog finally scored a release date. The big day is February 21, 2020. In the works for five years, this is the developer’s biggest (and longest) game yet. We’ll give you a more thorough rundown next month. ● Those of you with a PS Plus subscription — which should be all of you — can grease the wheels for the big release with The Last of Us Remastered. Alongside MLB The Show 19, it’s the free PS Plus game for October. ● Newly skinned versions of the PS4 Pro and DualShock controller themed to Death Stranding will land alongside the game on November 8. ● The king of empire-building strategy games is coming to the PS4. We can happily confirm that the great Civilization VI lands on PS4 on November 22, bringing with it optimised console controls two big expansion packs. ● Always happy to experiment in new genres, Sony is backing the next PS4/PSVR game from Tetris Effect developer Enhance. Called Humanity, it’s described as a humanity simulator. The idea is to show what people would look like from the perspective of aliens examining human group behaviour. Weird! Details on gameplay are slim, but it looks a bit like Lemmings meets Total War. ● Also announced was Arise: A Simple Story, which is a “gaming as art” indie venture that takes you on a journey through someone’s afterlife. Bright, colourful, atmospheric and emotional, Arise is looking enthralling. ● If you’re looking for some multiplayer VR action, something cool is on the way from the creators of Arizona Sunshine. It’s called After the Fall, and it’s a fast-paced, co-op shooter where you need to survive against undead creatures in a frozen, post-apocalyptic L.A. wasteland. ● Finally, VR fans also got word about a firstperson, gladiatorial brawler called Gorn. It looks deliberately over-the-top and brutal fun.

here are four key ingredients to a great RPG. The story needs to be engaging; combat must be fun; the world should feel immense; and you have to feel like every action you make is meaningful. Get these elements right and the net result is player immersion. We love RPGs for that. They can immerse you like no other genre, capturing your imagination for hundreds of hours. One developer who long ago mastered the RPG is Obsidian (Knights of the Old Republic, Dungeon Siege, Fallout, South Park: The Stick of Truth) and the American developer has brought its powers to bare on an all new IP, The Outer Worlds. The results are awesome. The Outer Worlds is set in an alternate history, branching off in 1901 from the timeline we know. Megacorporations have taken over and powered space exploration into the distant edges of space. Your character is on a colony ship heading out to the frontier, but it crashes, leaving everyone but you trapped in cryosleep. Left to survive on your own, you must make your way across the planet, and eventually to other planets, seeking to understand the true nature of why you were sent out there in the first place. The first thing you will notice about Outer Worlds is the alien environment. It’s beautiful, exotic and invites adventure. Visually the game is a treat and as you roam the open-world, you’ll find hidden caves, rebel outposts, bizarre natural formations and odd creatures.
The production quality extends to character interactions, where the near-lifelike NPCs and top voice cast make conversation feel very organic. You’ll spend a fair bit of time in dialogue trees, making decisions that can branch the story and determine which sidequests you discover. Thankfully, combat is also a blast. Encounters are frequent, and the mix of high-tech weapons and futuristic powers feel great. Everything unfolds from the first-person, and where some RPGs can feel stilted and uncomfortable when the bullets fly, The Outer Worlds is buttery smooth. The ability to slow time (when your meter is full) as you fire off bullets feels straight-up cool. Naturally, as the game progresses you unlock more abilities, level-up your perks and stats, and further refine your character. This in term changes your battle strategy. You also gain companions, too, who you can order in battle to further deepen the way you can handle any fight. Imagine Mass Effect as an FPS and you have the right idea. The Outer Worlds is a game that not only has the universe depth and catalogue of characters we expect from BioWare and Bethesda, but also the attention to detail, and style, of BioShock. It’s a combination that is truly mesmerising. When you layer on top a seriously addictive combat system and endless amounts of loot and customisation options, you’ve got a fantastic RPG. Perhaps more intriguing for fans is the way the “rules of Zombieland ” have been incorporated into the gameplay. Following the rules is part of the fun, especially as the game — like the film — aims to be funny (even while taking itself seriously). With a variety of modes, including a Horde mode, Boss Battles, Campaign and Co-op, there’s plenty to do. It’s may not be the big budget blockbuster game adaption you may have seen from the likes of Star Wars, but by smartly opting for co-op play and an action-centric genre, Zombieland: Double Tap — Road Trip still demands a look.

As they tore into “Whole Lotta Rosie”, the PA suddenly cut out, which elicited a rowdy response from the crowd — it seemed that many were there just to see AC/DC, a slap in the face for the resurrected The Who. The band continued playing, but they could barely be heard beyond the first few rows. “Turn the f—king thing on!” screamed one punter. The PA finally roared back into life during “Rocker”, the crowd yelled its approval and a very pissed-off AC/DC powered on to a huge finale. That malfunction launched a juicy rumour: were AC/DC the victims of sabotage? Could an envious headliner’s crew be to blame? The truth was never disclosed. Despite the hitch, “they were awesome”, according to The Stranglers’ J.J. Burnel. “And it was solid packed.” After their set, Bon Scott sat down with the band’s former roadie, Tana Douglas, who was working elsewhere that day at Wembley, and admitted that he was feeling much older than his 33 years. A French film crew began trailing the band in December, prior to a sold-out show at the Pavilion, shooting footage for the concert film Let There Be Rock, which would surface in 1980. Filmmakers Eric Dionysius and Eric Mistler provided an unusually candid portrait of Malcolm and Angus — “the notorious Young brothers”, grinned Angus. How’s Malcolm as a brother? he was asked. “Good, fine, upstanding. Likes a drink. And I can look him in the eye.” The two were filmed backstage, ciggies and guitars in hand. Swathed in smoke, the pair appeared lost in their pre-show tuning, oblivious to the world around them — camera crew, eager audience, the lot. There was a show to play; it was time to get to work. the kid, no matter how old he actually was — Malcolm was beginning to pay Angus due credit. “Sometimes,” Malcolm told a reporter, “because of the volume on stage, you don’t hear the stuff Angus is doing solowise… He’s a hot player. One day they’ll see it in their entirety N[Q T\ x3~X URy` \[R \S aUR best of them all.’ And that’ll be true.” In a sequence from Let There Be Rock that would prove tragically prophetic, a cameraman followed Bon as he walked along a street in Paris. “I’m a special drunkard,” Bon laughed, when asked why the others in the band referred to him as “special”. “I drink too much.” Did he consider himself a star? “No,” Bon chuckled. “But I see stars sometimes.” Malcolm had his own “solo” sequence in the film, where he got to indulge his love of soccer. Decked out in what looks like an Aberdeen FC strip, he booted a ball around an empty paddock, celebrated a “goal’ with a drink and then fell into the embrace of his girlfriend, O’linda, who was looking on. She was an employee at Alberts and a close friend of Fifa Riccabono, a long-time employee at Alberts (and eventually its CEO), and a close confidante of the band. O’linda was Malcolm’s first serious girlfriend in years; so serious, in fact, that they’d marry just prior to Christmas 1979, and would remain wed for the rest of his life. Angus, too, was in a serious relationship, with a tall blonde Dutchwoman named Ellen, who towered over him protectively whenever they were seen together. They’d wed in February 1980. The “notorious Young brothers” were settling down. But not so Bon Scott. He’d overindulged a few times during gigs on their most recent U.S. visit — boozing was fine after, but not during, a show — and was socialising with lively characters such as Pete Way from the British band UFO, a drinking buddy of Scott’s. The two bands had toured together in the States. “Bon was brilliant,”

MUSIC said Way. “You’d see him first thing in the morning, and he’d been with the barmaid or `\ZRaUV[T N[Q URyQ T\ x5NQ a good workout last night.’ He’d get out of the elevator, he’d clap his hands and he’d `Nf x9N_TR 7NPX 1N[VRY` y{ Ever since the band had begun working with Atlantic in the U.S. people had whispered in Malcolm’s ear that Bon wasn’t right for the band: he was too wild, he was too ragged, he screamed too much. Someone even suggested that Malcolm should replace him with David Coverdale from the metal band Whitesnake (who Malcolm dismissed as a “pop singerâ€?). And, by his own admission, Scott was now starting to entertain the notion of recording a solo album, ideally with some of the southern rockers who he’d befriended in the U.S.. He wasn’t leaving the band; he just wanted to stretch his musical wings a bit. But Malcolm rejected any notion of sacking Scott. No f—king way that was going to happen – he and Scott had grown very tight since he joined the band. Bon stayed. The rest of 1979 was spent in motion, with a U.S. tour followed by dates in the U.K. and Europe. Just before heading back to Australia for Christmas, Scott seemed to be in a more upbeat mood than he had been at Wembley a few months earlier. “I’m 33,â€? he told a reporter, “[but] you’re never too old to rock and roll.â€? Back in Sydney he reconnected with family and friends, even jumping on stage at the suburban Sydney venue The Family Inn, jamming Chuck Berry’s “Back in the USAâ€? with the band Swanee, whose singer, John Swan, was a fellow expat Scot who also didn’t mind a tipple. Then there was a whistlestop AC/DC tour of France for a week in January, with gigs in Poitiers, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Rouen, Nantes, Brest and Le Mans, followed by a handful of shows back in the U.K.. The Highway to Hell LP was now well represented in the band’s set list; they played “Shot Down in Flamesâ€?, “Highway to Hellâ€? and “Girls Got Rhythmâ€?, along with the usual standards. There was also another appearance on Top of the Pops, rocking “Touch Too Muchâ€? on February 7, followed by a spot on a Spanish TV show two days later. The translated version of the intro from Spanish host Silvia Tortosa laid it on the line: “Today on TV Applauso, we receive a new group in Spain: AC/DC. They’re Australian and are considered one of the best rock bands of the last generation‌ Today, for the first time in Spain, AC/DC!â€? But Bon didn’t look his best; he seemed tired, pale, drained. The seated audience, an odd assortment of young and old Spaniards, clapped politely after the band played “Girls Got Rhythmâ€?. A few days later, Bon returned to the Hammersmith Odeon to cheer on his buddies in UFO when they staged a three-night run at a favourite venue of AC/DC’s. Members of UFO would subsequently admit that heroin was among their after-show indulgences, and AC/ DC’s manager Peter Mensch was understandably worried about the impact this toxic environment would have on Scott. But Bon was his own man — and no stranger to drugs, of course. As for Malcolm,

he may have considered Bon a brother, but he was in no position to question the guy’s lifestyle choices, even if there were some incidents that upset him, such as the time Bon had invited Rose Tattoo’s Mick Cocks onto the tour bus, even though Malcolm had made it well known he wasn’t a fan of the hard-living guitarist. But Malcolm was hardly a saint himself — he loved a drink and a smoke and a big night; he’d be a hypocrite to even suggest some sort of intervention. And would Bon have listened to him anyway? If there was one thing bugging Malcolm, it was that he felt Bon wasn’t receiving due credit for his rare, funny skill with lyrics and his amazing stage presence. The man was the living embodiment of swagger, one of the best frontmen of his generation. George Young had been spot-on five years before when he’d observed that hiring Bon had transformed AC/DC into a real rock-and-roll band. And as far as Malcolm was concerned, Bon still wasn’t getting “the recognition due to him�. Maybe the next record would change all that. Malcolm’s thoughts were soon elsewhere: by early 1980, he was focused on the next album. Highway to Hell had given them a firm foothold in America, and they were now making a reasonable living, so the time was right to capitalise on the momentum. Mutt Lange was locked in to produce; as soon as a bunch of new songs were in decent shape, they would be ready to roll. News had come through from the U.S. that Highway to Hell had just tipped over the one million sales mark, so the future couldn’t have been brighter. It was a platinum record— their first. On February 15, Malcolm and Angus got together to work in a London rehearsal space, tinkering with instrumental sketches that would become the songs “Have a Drink on Me� and “Let Me Put My Love Into You�. Bon dropped in unannounced. The first thing that struck Malcolm was that Bon was in good shape. As he’d say later, “He looked fantastic; he was looking after himself.� “Do you mind if I play the drums?� Bon said, motioning towards a kit in the corner. It was a request with a bit of a backstory; when Scott had first met the band in 1974, he’d actually asked if he could be their drummer. “So when do we get started?� Scott asked, as he whacked away at the drums. “We’re just about ready for you, Bon,� Malcolm told him. “Maybe next week sometime.� With that, Bon said goodbye and left. emember when Tinder was the only dating app around? Flashback to 2013 and Australia first heard about the #SwipeLife culture. Oh, there were other dating apps floating around, but about six years ago it seemed that the pioneer of the dating app world — Tinder dating — paved the way for a myriad of others to follow. Tinder did a brilliant job being the guinea pigs to trial and error, and iron out creases, as we began to road test our way into courting on our phones via this app. In fact, earlier this year, for the launch of my seventh book #instalovers Digital Dating, DM Disasters and Love Stories, I asked Tinder marketing manager, Josh Metz, to write the foreword. Since Tinder, we found more ways of finding love and connections. These days we don’t just swipe — we also double tap, leave a comment

and “heart” the potential people we like, to let them know we are interested and hope for a match. I’ve researched, tried and tested the plethora of these other very successful dating apps that keep popping up. I also now know that statistics show the average person is using three dating apps at a time. So how would we know which app is best for us? On my U.S. press tours I was asked by American journalists and TV anchors if one dating app was better than another, or if one app was for “hook ups” and another for relationships? I’d always reply and maintain that “it’s not just the app, it’s the person. How you present is what you’ll attract.” Having said that, some apps now understand our needs more, or tailor to a different type of person. So, here’s my lowdown on getting “loved up”.
BUMBLE E
RAYA
Bumble is the “female first” social networking app that empowers women to make the first move. It’s also the first app of its kind to bring dating, friend-finding and networking with career-building to a single platform via Bumble Date, Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz. The busy bee team have a hive of women working behind the sweet spots who are inspired by company director, Whitney Wolfe Herd, whose mission has lifted the stigma of online dating by putting women in control of the conversation. Bumble says no to lewd pics without consent and recently undertook in-app research which confirmed Bumble Australia users feel uncomfortable when they are sent an unsolicited lewd picture. The Bumble app will give you a little bee sting if your etiquette is anything but kind and respectful, as it won’t tolerate antisocial behaviour when it comes to addressing gender equality. Besides Bumble being free and available to download in the App Store and Google Play, what I also love about it is that since I’ve been writing about safe dating and avoiding blind dates, via verification or using a video call before you meet IRL (in real life), they’ve improved their technology and you can video chat via the app without giving out your phone number.
This started out in America a few years ago when the dating app first recognised a need for celebrities who wanted to also date and meet online in a safe and discreet community. Your RAYA profile will be a bunch of photos or videos in a montage to your music of choice. You can leave a heart on their profile to let them know you’re interested or a direct request (which are limited and replenished weekly) to fast track your move. RAYA shows your profession and Instagram handle and the rest is pretty discreet and straightforward. Lots have been known to say that RAYA is the hardest app to get on (obviously because you have to be a celebrity or someone high profile or in the “industry”) but it’s also notorious for people matching and never meeting up. The culture of daters usually inspires a super cautious community of people wanting to connect but probably too busy to ever do anything about it. Whilst I’ve noticed some incredible candidates on the app, I remain private a lot sharing who is on it. RAYA likes to protect its carefully selected community. You need three referrals to be considered to join and it could take years as they put you on a wait list. You’ll also be reported, warned and possibly deleted if you screenshot any profiles.

HINGE
Didier Rappaport founded Happn, along with Antony Cohen and Fabien Cohen. This French start-up dating app, which has now spread across the world, helps you find potential dates in your immediate area that you may have crossed paths with through the course of your day, via GEO location. It’s totally safe because it won’t show others your exact location and you get to send a message a\ aUR`R ]R\]YR a\ YRa aURZ X[\d f\b xUN]][y a\ OR V[ aUR N_RN If it’s a match, you get to meet up. If you notice the word “NOW� next to the profile, this means you’re currently within range of each other. For privacy reasons, the app will not display the exact distance. You can also see an index of every user you’ve come across recently, listed chronologically and by the amount of time you've been near each other. If you’re interested, you can “Heart� the profile. If that user “Hearts� you back, then you’ve formed a “Crush� and you can exchange messages. It’s the new, old-fashioned way of connecting via technology. Remember the days you’d meet someone at the cafe, gym or supermarket but wished you got their number or eye contact? This app allows you to still connect if you feel you missed that chance whilst crossing paths. It’s easy to set up, using Facebook and Instagram profiles and it’s also free.
This is another current favourite of mine. It was developed by Justin McLeod in 2012 in New York, where he sought out to connect people who sought out less “quick to judge profiles�, by removing a “swipe� action. Instead, you upload photos with questions and comments that inspire and create conversation about yourselves to get to know the deeper you, rather than a focus on face level only. Hinge is known as a “relationships� app and when you set up your account, it’ll give you a notice flashing “designed to be deleted�. This means that the style of person it attracts will be someone who’s after something meaningful and serious. The mere mantra is a good reminder for those logging on. When you “heart� or comment under a potential partner’s picture, it’ll notify them immediately and they can message you back which will create an instant match to connect and chat. Hinge also takes disrespectful behaviour, online abuse or fake profiles very seriously. I was super impressed with a report I had to make about unsolicited pics and abusive comments and the Hinge team followed it up very quickly and sent me a reply email asking for further information or possible screenshots. Once you’ve met the Hinge date, you can record it as so, and Hinge will help you find similar dates or use your information positively to record that the date was successful to let them know or help you find new possibilities. Well, for starters, it is often referred to as ‘make-up sex’ — it’s lustful, it’s primal and it’s forceful. It usually takes place after a heated argument or tiff. It’s when anger is siphoned through a good hard f—king. In a climate of feminist outrage, political correctness and 24-hour-newscycles — ‘angry sex’ is an unpopular sport to love. Individuals who indulge in angry sex are often subjected to public shamings. Males are labelled misogynists, rapists and abusers for willingly participating in said act. Females are labelled internalmisogynists, victims of the patriarchy and enablers of violence against women. It’s unsubstantiated vitriol and in my personal opinion — it’s fear based. Sex is black, white, grey, pink, purple, leopard-skin and much, much more. It doesn’t fit neatly into a box but it often takes place inside one, (sorry, bad pun). Nevertheless, I’m here to tell you that I love angry sex. Why? Below I explore some of the reasons why.

This is not about being a victim of the patriarchy. This is about embracing my femininity and girlieness. This is about wanting a man to act like a man. I don’t want a watered down version of maleness. I don’t want a duplicate of me. I want strength and cockiness. I desire the strongest mate — we may have evolved from the jungle but the mating game remains the same. I want to be hit over the head with a club and dragged back to a cave. I like the pace and haphazard shift-changing that takes place during angry sex. It keeps things spicy. There’s definitely a ‘safe space’ for angry sex in our sex lives and it’s an act that we shouldn’t attach shame to. The honourable Anne Ferguson, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has overseen many high profile judgements in her neardecade in the job, but it’s the decision to uphold judgement against convicted child sex offender cardinal George Pell for which she will be most remembered in 2019. The historic ruling earns Ferguson a rather unexpected but welldeserved spot on this list.
As PM’s spouses go, our first lady keeps it pretty low-key. Still, we have uncovered through a few rare interviews that she loves to relax with a glass of wine with hubby and raises the roof at the local Horizon mega-church. The latest being first-time male MAXIM cover star Charlie Sheen, who Parnia appeared with on aforementiond cover. Miss Porsche now has plans to branch further into acting and has moved to L.A. to pursue her dream.
