Trust - an Attitude in Spirituality

By Jane Offer

Arguably the most difficult aspect we have to combat on our road to spiritual development is Trust. I am not talking about trusting our guides or those that work with us, or trusting their guidance and messages, they will never let us down when we are connected through a true heart. I am talking about trusting ourselves to hear, understand and act on what we receive. Trust does not invite us to become blind believers, rather it enables us simply to understand what we can and cannot control and follow our intuitive senses. Seeing the path forward clearly, rather than holding onto an intellectual ideal.

“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.”- Golda Meir

Most of us experience selfdoubt throughout our lives; difficult experiences cause us to avoid listening to our instinct and hold onto negative memories and regrets from the past. These can make it difficult for us to trust ourselves and creates challenges in every part of our lives.

“Trust does not invite us to become blind believers…”

Self-doubt is the shadow we can use to help us discover why we lose trust in ourselves and how to overcome it. By utilising mindful self-awareness, we can better understand challenges for what they are; a tool which enables us to listen and trust our own knowing in the process of life.

“Trust is an attitude within spirituality: it is that strong and safe place for us to step into…”

Yes, we will fall - that too is part of the process of change – and yes, we will get up, dust ourselves off and start again, wiser from the experience. In doing so, we must learn to forgive ourselves by releasing the idea of failure. After all, the only failure in life is not to try!

Trust is an attitude within spirituality: it is that strong and safe place for us to step into, where we allow our vulnerability and self-doubt to be healed by pure joy. Sometimes we will feel in a place of safety and at other times we will not. In those beautiful moments when we experience the latter, we release fear and control and allow our spirit to soar complete in trusting the process.

“The constant practice of stepping into trust is an amazing activator of transformation…”

The constant practice of stepping into trust is an amazing activator of transformation and insight, reducing the influence of our self-limiting ego. When thoughts come from a basis of fear, we become vulnerable to the many voices we have heard throughout our lifetime. Each one giving us conflicting information about what is right or wrong, which is the best direction to take and so on. This information is based in others fears created from their own experiences and, while they are trying to help, it only adds to our own confusion.

Trust is a deep and innate sense of self, designed to guide us towards the next step in our evolution. To trust deeply we must allow ourselves to be open and receptive to the next step rather than be disturbed by a sense of having no control. Our openness to perceived vulnerability when surrendering control, allows us to flow with the process of life and to gain the awareness that life continues to have meaning and beauty, even when we are in the midst of darkness and suffering.

This attitude of hopefulness – the only gift left to humanity when Pandora opened the box – gives us the power to overcome whatever we are experiencing at the time. Hope promises that we can hear the whispered inner voice of our Essence, which then becomes an integrated part of us rather than an outside influence upon which we convince ourselves we must rely.

In trusting we are empowered to act when necessary or remain still, allowing the process to unfold itself fully. From this point of stillness, we access the innate spiritual power and guidance within each of us.

Since ancient times, people have understood the importance of re-awakening the spiritual side of their nature by strengthening their senses. Now is the time, more than ever, to build that inner trust, follow our hearts and listen closely to our own council. Spiritual trust is the glue that holds us all together in community whilst remaining individual. It irradicates judgement because we understand that challenges are different for each individual. Therefore, how can we know better for another? We can only ‘know’ for ourselves and this takes up most of our time and focus.

From a place of complete trust, we become less stressed. Life becomes more of an adventure into the unknown, embracing the knowing that all our needs are met. We are never alone unless we choose it to be so. We make decisions that are balanced and beneficial and facilitate further growth.

In a place of trust, we have an optimistic viewpoint and, as we know, where our thoughts go, energy flows. Therefore, we are the creator of our every moment, our every day, so it is vital that we create from a basis of Trust!
