SUNY Potsdam kicked off the fall semester for freshmen with the welcome carnival on August 26th, put on by the college’s student clubs. People were able to play games for prizes, tiedye their own shirts, create personalized street signs, and duel each other in jousting, to great success. Welcome weekend continued this week with First Saturday, coordinated with the businesses of Potsdam, with deals, sales, and free giveaways for college students. First Saturday is a way for SUNY freshmen to become familiar with the town of Potsdam. First Saturday also displayed Potsdam’s musical talent with performances by the Potsdam

Voter ID laws infringing on rights One of the biggest political issues today is the up and coming debates about voter ID laws. What is a voter ID law? This is a law that 1#,-.1#/$?%)#1/$)%$/"%2$.3#5).'(+).%5$.5$%13#1$ to vote. The laws that are the strictest require a photo ID, and if you don’t have one, you may be prevented from voting. The states that have the strictest laws and are causing the most controversy are Pennsylvania, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, and Tennessee. A similar strict voter ID law was recently repealed in Texas. Why would we need such strict voter ID laws to prove who you are? Supporters of such laws insist that it helps combat voter fraud. However, statistics have shown that voter fraud, at least at the polls, is slim to none, with only 86 convictions of voter fraud over a period %&$'?#$4#+1/$:81%1#8-@6.(+A%1BCA$D%)#1$&1+-3$ is more common with absentee ballots, and )"#/#$?%)#1$.3#5).'(+).%5$6+2/$3%$5%)".5B$)%$ prevent this kind of fraud. You don’t know who is out there, waiting to use your account like a bicycle and leave you with thirty two pages of printing quota left. I’ve used so many different hapless accounts at this point, that I’ve decided to take pity on you all and tell you this news. Stop being stupid and LOG. OUT. If any of these activities hold interest for you, please, don’t hesitate to stop by our meetings held on Mondays, 7:30 PM, in Union 203. Copy editing sessions begin on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. This Monday, September 10, will be our mixer, held in the P5.%5$ML*A$Q#$2.66$@#$"+?.5B$&1##$2+&O#/$ and ice cream, so come check us out! If you belong to a group or are involved in sports and would like the Racquette to cover you, please come to our meetings and request it. We love to help other groups out and give them the spotlight as much as we can. We can’t guarantee an article, as our assignments are on a voluntary basis, but we

The mass coverage made it one of the most highly viewed programs of the week. Except for one program. One program had higher raters that week: TLC’s reality pro gram “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” For those of you unfamiliar with this show, let me catch you up. On TLC’s other reality show “Toddlers and Tiaras” we were intro duced to sixyearold Alanna. Alanna was a sassy little blonde girl who deemed herself “a beauty queen” because of her pageant tro 8".#/A$K"#$)"#5$/5+88#3$"#1$'5B#1/$+53$)%63$ the world “a dollar makes me hollar, Honey Boo Boo”, thus launching her into immediate internet fame and eventually, in some way, real fame. A few months later, TLC announced that this summer Honey Boo Boo would have her own show and sure enough in midaugust, the entire Honey Boo Boo clan was involved. TLC only planned to renew if ratings were successful, which apparently they were. What does that say about Americans and their priorities? Now some may say that this is a sad story, that the nation would rather watch this little girl and her absolutely in sane mother jumping in mud at the redneck games, but I have to say if that’s more your cup of tea than the RNC, then that’s cool. However, I wonder what that says about

the national attention spanwhat exactly are our interests now. The RNC was MAJOR, considering Romney accepted the nomina tion and the scandals that came out of some speeches. It was actually impossible to go )"1%-B"$)"#$("+55#6/$+53$5%)$'53$/%9#$/%1)$ of coverage, while TLC only shows one half hour episode of “Honey boo boo” a week at 10pm. It’s interesting to see that this has at tracted more viewers than the Republican na tional convention, especially in a show that is so openly criticized by not only media but by every day people. The high ratings for Honey Boo Boo 3%#/5E)$ /-181./#$ 9#$ %5#$ @.)A$ *#+6.)4$ !D$ ./$ more popular than we’d like to think. The ridiculous antics of the family draws in view ers as all reality tv always will, no matter how trashy. My one hope for Honey Boo Boo is that Mama June uses this money for her col lege education, because with the right stud ies, that little girl could take over the world. Maybe one day she’ll be AT the RNC. You never know.

Reasons to join a club at college

!$$.)&2".30&

!"#$%#&'#(#() *+,-./0)1

It’s the beginning of the semester and for all you freshmen out there, the beginning of a brand new chap ter. In the week you’ve been here you’ve probably been bombarded with all types of club invitations and announcements. Some may seem cheesy, but don’t brush them

aside; joining a club could possibly be the best decision you make here at SUNY Potsdam and here’s a few reasons why: Make new friends: If you’re joining a club, it’s the perfect place to make new friends up here at col lege. If you’re in the same club, chances are you’ve got some com mon interests with other students there. Get motivated: If you’re pas

sionate about something, it will show in your everyday life. When you’re working hard in one aspect of your life, it will carry over into your schoolwork. Leadership opportunities: Get ting involved and becoming a part of an organization can go a long way. Executive board members graduate every semester and some !"#$"##%&$'!$())$'*!&#$+!&,',!"&-$.$ truly passionate and hardworking

/#/0#1$2,))$("%$,'3&$#4&5$'!$/!6#$ through the ranks. Network skills: Hone your net working skills. We’re all on one campus together and there is no reason to stay in our own boxes. Reach out to other clubs for joint events and mixers. It not only builds friendships, but can result in traditions the entire campus looks forward too.

It looks great on a resume: When you go off into the scary real world at the end of your time here, showing that you showed dedica tion to an organization will impress potential employers and will make you a cut above the rest. Of course the number one reason to join a club is to have fun! Here at SUNY Potsdam there’s a club for just about everyone to jump into and enjoy!

Potsdam offers activities for all !$$.)&2".30

Well, it is only the second week of school and by now you are prob ably wondering, isn’t there some thing more exciting I can be doing than this homework? The answer is yes. Annie Says: Multiwear maxi !$$.)&2".30 '4--)5)&-.7)

What is long, can come in all different fabrics and colors, and should be an essential piece in any woman’s closet? If you haven’t guessed already, I am talking about maxi skirts! Maxi skirts are a must have in your closet. They are a very versatile piece that can be worn numerous ways and look

good on all body types. Not only are they stylish, but very comfortable as well. ?*#$(6#$#4&5$245&$'!$&'5)#$5!=1$/4:,$&B,1'$41#C$D-$?=;B$4$ tank top or shirt into the skirt and add a thin belt to empha size your waist. 2. Layer your skirt by adding a longer shirt (not tucked in) and long sleeve such as a jean shirt or plaid. 3. To give your skirt a new look, knot the corner of the skirt to create a slit effect that hits right at the knee. 4. Wear a

crop top with the skirt up higher to accentuate your waist and show a bit of midriff. 5. Pull the maxi skirt all the way up to make a strapless dress and add a belt to accessorize, the maxi skirt then doubles as a dress. It is like having two different pieces in your closet (one of my favorite, most versatile ways to wear a maxi skirt). Go out and get your maxi skirt today!

Good morning Potsdam! This is my last year at the Racquette and in my advanced age, I’ve learned a few things about what will hap pen this semester. There will be a lot of freshmen advice columns, read them! But know that mine su persedes the others. So if there’s a contradiction, you should always refer back here. Now there are some things you’re absolutely going to do. You’re going to drop your phone. It may break, so don’t be stupid! Chances are it’s a seminew phone and still under warranty. Ship it home or take it to the Verizon store in town. This way, you won’t have a broken screen for two years. Also, my phone’s newest glitch is that the battery doesn’t exist anymore. So it !"#$%#& "'(& )%**#& +%& ,-"))%./& 0#& .% quired” as it uses up the battery to stay on for hours. I feel that this was an inside joke or possibly a cause of great arguments between the soft ware and hardware engineers. You’re absolutely going to do something stupid like throw your phone. But in case it’s worse and you don’t know what to do, here’s three tips. Stop. Listen. Buy ice cream. That’s right, ice cream! It’s an amazing cureall that I’ve used at least once to save my life/rep at a party. It also makes girls hap pier in the short term! Long term: 1$%/2**& #"/& 0)& ,+"3%#& )$%+& 4")56& 1$%'& /782**& #"/9& ,#7& #)7:& %")0';& 0<%&<.%"+56&1$%'&/782**&=;$)6&1$%'& you’ll give her make up ice cream and the cycle starts anew. You’re absolutely going to gain weight, unless you’re an athlete or go to the gym 4 times a week. Which all healthy college aged stu dents do. But in case you start no ticing a beer belly, the best way to stop it is to cut back...on soda. I put on the classic 15 in one semester, next year I cut out soda and demol ished that weight. Like a boss. You’re absolutely going to skip class. This is natural, but if you don’t keep track or skip on the wrong day, like a test day, you’re facked. Two strategies you can use are to never skip, or keep a skip schedule. These have worked the best for me in the past. Also, if you’ve skipped too much, you have a few weeks to withdraw or S/U a class. S/Uing is to pass/fail a class and the grade won’t be recorded. I didn’t learn this until I got my new adviser sophomore year, so learn from my mistakes! P.S. Wow almost didnt write anything here, maybe next time I’ll do that to trip up the copy editors!
