“Shana Tova Umetuka” - “May you have a good and sweet year” is what we typically wish each other in the month leading up to the Jewish New Year, and I bet you’ve always wondered why we give a double wish, that the year should be both good and sweet. If it’s good, isn’t it sweet? It’s got to be more than just poetic..

The Talmud teaches us that everything that happens in the world is for the good. And although many times it seems far from good, you should know that ultimately it somehow is for the good. We therefore wish each other, that not just should you have a good year, but also a sweet one. A year that is not just ultimately for the good, but rather one where the good is obvious to all. A year that is deliciously sweet!

Many give each other Teiglach, Honey Cookies or Honey Cakeknown as Lekach. In fact the Chassidic custom is to specifically ask someone (usually the Rabbi, but not necessarily) for a piece of or a Shtickle Lekach. We hope and pray that if there’s anything that we must ask or beg anyone for in the coming year, we should fulfill it with that ask.

It is also the custom of eating sweet foods on Rosh Hashanah itself, especially an apple dipped in Honey with a special prayer that G-d grant us a good & sweet year. The Challah is dipped in Honey. A special dish known as Tzimmes is a European Carrot concoction cooked in Honey. As well as many other foods we eat with honey. My mother z’ls delicious Tzimmes included Chuck Fleisch and Marrow Bones and was one of the most delicious dishes ever. Ah, good memories!

Of course by now you surely know that the theme of Honey throughout this season symbolizes the sweet year we all yearn for. But why specifically Honey? Why not Sugar, Splenda or any other Sweetener?

For starters, Israel was blessed to be a land flowing with Milk and Honey! Eating Honey, wherever we may be, reminds us of our ancient homeland and our deep connection to Israel. Have you ever seen an expiration date on Honey? Honey can last for a really long time! A quick Google search will tell you that Honey can last for centuries, but perhaps it can even last longer than that!

Many times there are people that get blessings. They win the lottery or stumble across a treasure. But the blessings unfortunately don’t always last and all their money can disappear as fast as it appeared or even worse, break families and friends apart. On Rosh Hashanah we pray that we not only get a blessed year, but that the blessing lasts.

The Next Crisis Is Anyone’s Guess But The Government Is Ready To Lockdown The Nation

First came 9/11, which the Government used to transform itself into a Police State.

Then the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, which the Police State used to test out its lockdown powers.

In light of the Government’s tendency to exploit crises (legitimate or manufactured) and capitalize on the nation’s heightened emotions, confusion and fear as a means of extending the reach of the Police State, one has to wonder what socalled crisis it will declare next.

It’s a simple enough formula: first, you create fear, then you capitalize on it by seizing power.

Frankly, it doesn’t even matter what the nature of the next national emergency might be (Terrorism, Civil Unrest, Economic Collapse, a health scare, or the Environment) as long as it allows the Government to lockdown the nation and justify all manner of Tyranny in the socalled name of National Security.

Cue the Emergency State.

Terrorist Attacks, mass shootings, “unforeseen economic collapse, loss of functioning political and legal order, purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency, pervasive public health emergencies, and catastrophic natural and human disasters:” the Government has been anticipating and preparing for such crises for years now.

Here’s what we know: given the rate at which the Government keeps devising new ways to establish itself as the “solution” to all of our worldly problems at taxpayer expense, each subsequent crisis ushers in ever larger expansions of Government power and less individual liberty.

This is the slippery slope to outright Tyranny.

You see, once the government acquires (and uses) authoritarian powers—to spy on its citizens, to carry out surveillance, to transform its police forces into extensions of the military, to seize taxpayer funds, to wage endless wars, to censor and silence dissidents, to identify potential troublemakers, to detain citizens without due process—it does not voluntarily relinquish them.

The lesson for the ages is this: once any Government is allowed to overreach and expand its powers, it’s almost impossible to put the genie back in the bottle.

As Harvard Constitutional Law Professor Laurence Tribe recognizes, “The dictatorial hunger for power is insatiable.”

Indeed, the history of the United States is a testament to the old adage that liberty decreases as Government (and Government bureaucracy) grows. To put it another way, as the Government expands, liberty contracts.

In this way, every crisis since the nation’s early beginnings has become a make-work opportunity for the Government.

Each crisis has also been a test to see how far “we the people” would allow the Government to sidestep the Constitution in the so-called name of national security; a test to see how well we have assimilated the Government’s lessons in compliance, fear and Police State tactics; a test to see how quickly we’ll march in lockstep with the Government’s dictates, no questions asked; and a test to see how little resistance we offer up to the Government’s power grabs when made in the name of national security.

Most critically of all, it has been a test to see whether the Constitution—and our commitment to the principles enshrined in the Bill of Rights—could survive a national crisis and true State Of Emergency.

Unfortunately, we’ve been failing this particular test for a long time now.

Indeed, the powers-that-be have been pushing our buttons and herding us along like so much cattle since World War II, at least, starting with the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor, which not only propelled the U.S. into World War II but also unified the American people in their opposition to a common enemy.

That fear of attack by foreign threats, conveniently torqued by the growing military industrial complex, in turn gave rise to the Cold War Era’s “Red Scare.”

Promulgated through Government propaganda, paranoia and manipulation, antiCommunist sentiments boiled over into a mass hysteria that viewed anyone and

everyone as suspect: your friends, the next-door neighbor, even your family members could be a Communist subversive.

This hysteria, which culminated in hearings before the House Un-American Activities Committee, where hundreds of Americans were called before Congress to testify about their so-called Communist affiliations and intimidated into making false confessions, also paved the way for the rise of an all-knowing, all-seeing Governmental Surveillance State.

By the time 9/11 rolled around, all George W. Bush had to claim the country was being invaded by Terrorists, and the Government used the USA Patriot Act to claim greater powers to spy, search, detain and arrest American Citizens in order to keep America safe.

By way of the National Defense Authorization Act, Barack Obama continued Bush’s trend of undermining the Constitution, going so far as to give the military the power to strip Americans of their constitutional rights, label them extremists, and detain them indefinitely without trial, all in the name of keeping America safe.

Then Donald Trump took office, claiming the country was being invaded by dangerous immigrants and insisting that the only way to keep America safe was to expand the reach of the border police, empower the military to “assist” with border control, and essentially turn the country into a Constitution-free zone.

That so-called immigration crisis then morphed into multiple crises (domestic extremism, the COVID-19 Pandemic,

Race Wars, Civil Unrest, etc.) that the Government has been eager to use in order to expand its powers.

Joe Biden, in turn, has made every effort to expand the reach of the militarized police state, pledging to hire 87,000 more IRS agents and 100,000 police officers, and allowing the FBI to operate as a standing army.

What the next crisis will be is anyone’s guess, but you can be sure that there will be a next crisis.

So, what should you expect if the Government decides to declare another State Of Emergency and institutes a Nationwide Lockdown?

You should expect more of the same, only worse.

More compliance, less resistance.

More fear-mongering, mind-control tactics and less tolerance for those who question the Government’s propagandadriven narratives.

Most of all, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, you should expect more Tyranny and less freedom.

Holiday Travelers Are Booking Earlier This Year

Although the summer travel season just came to an end, Floridians are already beginning to lock in their travel plans for the holidays. In fact, according to a new AAA survey, three-fifths (61%) of residents are already planning to take a holiday vacation. More than half of them (57%) are booking holiday travel plans earlier this year due to higher travel prices. Twothirds of holiday travelers (68%) say they’re planning at least one flight during the holiday season.

“Whether you plan to book a flight, cruise or visit a theme park, it’s best to get ahead of the holiday rush and finalize your plans now,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “This will help ensure you get the itinerary you want at a competitive price. While it’s possible that those who wait until the last minute could catch a lower rate, their preferred options may already be gone.”

Thanksgiving Travel More than half of Florida travelers (55%) are planning a trip with at least one overnight stay for Thanksgiving. According to the survey, the largest share of travelers (40%) will lock in their Thanksgiving travel plans during September. By the end of the month, 61% will have already booked their trip. View the survey for more information.

Tips for booking flights during Thanksgiving week

The busiest travel days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. Consider booking a flight Sunday or Monday before Thanksgiving and Saturday after the holiday. Airports should be less busy and flights should have more availability.

Christmas Travel

The timing is more spread out for

Floridians who are planning a trip for Christmas. Only 12% have already finalized plans, as close to a quarter will wait until September (21%), October (28%), and November (26%) to book.

Tips for booking flights for Christmas

Regardless of what date Christmas falls on, most travelers depart two to four days prior to the holiday. Since Christmas Day falls on a Monday this year, travelers should expect the busiest days at the airport to be Friday and Saturday, before the holiday.

AAA’s Advice for Booking a Flight

Book early for the best combination of availability and price. Most travelers want to skip layovers and get right to their destination. That means nonstop flights, especially those going cross-country and internationally, will fill up fast.

Book a direct flight that leaves early in the morning. Afternoon and evening flights are more susceptible to delays/cancellations due to weather or other unfore-

seen circumstances. Connecting flights multiply the risk of something going wrong. Consider traveling a day or two earlier than planned. Even if you face delays, you are still likely to arrive on time.

If your flight has connections, build in a couple hours between flights. This way, if your first flight is delayed, you are less likely to miss your second one.

Flight Concerns

One-third of holiday travelers (33%) say they are less likely to fly this year because they’re concerned about flight delays and cancellations. AAA urges travelers to consider travel insurance, which provides financial compensation if your flight is affected by covered reasons like severe winter weather, which can ruin your plans.

“Given recent challenges with air travel, we are seeing more and more passengers opt for travel insurance,” Haas said. “Travel Insurance is such a valuable resource for air travelers, because it pro-

vides financial benefits for lost or delayed luggage, flight cancellations, and flight delays of as little as three hours.”

More People are Gifting Experiences

Instead of Presents

AAA travel advisors say they’re seeing more people gift travel experiences to loved ones instead of presents. That means those people are already thinking about the holidays. “I just booked travel for one family who’s surprising their children on Christmas morning with a trip to Disney World, leaving later that same day! That family was sure to book early to get exactly what they wanted,” said Cady DeBlois, a Travel Advisor for AAA.

YOLO (You Only Live Once)

is Replacing Bucket Lists

After three years of a pandemic, many travelers are tackling their bucket lists now! “I’ve had travelers tell me, I don’t know what my health will be in 5 or 10 years, let’s go abroad this year,” said Jodi Abata, AAA Travel Advisor, who frequently books international trips for AAA members. “There seems to be a sense of adventure from more people now. They don’t want to delay travel any longer.”

Europe, Cruises, and Theme

Parks Sell Out in Advance

European travel is booming this year, and the holidays will be no exception.

AAA Travel Advisors say touring Christmas markets in Europe is extremely popular and itineraries sell out in advance. River cruises are also in high demand during the holidays, along with Caribbean cruises. Theme parks are a holiday favorite among families with kids when students are on winter break. DeBlois added, “I’ve already booked theme park vacations for Christmas 2024! That’s how eager many families are to get their holiday plans on the books.”

Save Time With Sweet, Savory, And Salty Snacks

(Family Features) Work, social commitments, kids’ activities and the daily grind can take over schedules and wreak havoc on your opportunities to sit at the table for meals.

As your calendar seems to fill up with meetings, family occasions and more, you might just find yourself skipping breakfast or lunch and opting for filling snacks instead.

In fact, according to the International Food Information Council’s 2022 Food and Health Survey, 75% of Americans snack at least once per day, which means 2023 could become the year of the snack. Whether it’s forgoing breakfast at home for a bite on the go or powering up with an afternoon morsel, one flavor favorite and nutritional powerhouse you can turn to is the Pecan.

As Pecans are used in an increasing number of snack innovations, they’re being hailed as the fastest growing nut in new snack applications, according to Information Resources, Inc. They’re an ideal snack for punching up your routine with great taste, Plant-Based Nutrition and an easy-to-pair profile.

For example, they’re poised to remix your snack mix mentality as they complement sweet, savory, spicy and buttery combinations. Ready in less than half an hour, you can add some sweetness to your workday with this Pecan Snack Mix with Cranberries and Chocolate for a fruity, nutty, chocolatey twist on traditional trail mix.

If a saltier treat is more your speed, consider this Salty Pecan Snack Mix for a grab-and-go breakfast as you head out the door or an easy way to keep hunger at bay in the afternoon. Because Pecans pair with a variety of ingredients and flavors, they’re a perfect partner for this combination of Rolled Oats, Coconut, Honey, Cinnamon and more.

Entertain Guests With A Fresh Al Fresco Favorite

(Family Features) If you and your loved ones yearn for new, stimulating experiences to feel connected to the outdoors, look no further than enjoying mealtime al fresco. Inspired by the Mediterranean tradition of “eating in the open air,” al fresco dining offers passionate home cooks a fresh way to enjoy their favorite recipes outside with friends and family.

Consider these two tried-and-true al fresco tips from Television Personality and Culinary Icon Rachael Ray the next time you enjoy dinner on the deck or lunch on the patio.

Gather the right tools: On those buggy days and nights during the warm season when you’re dining al fresco, grab a food mesh tent. Not only will it protect your food, but it also looks good and goes with a variety of table settings.

Plan the decor: When hosting friends and family, up your floral game by reaching into the garden and adding some fresh herbs - it’s aesthetically pleasing and smells delicious.

Ideal al fresco meals typically take advantage of in-season produce, offer easy preparation so you can focus on entertaining and are simple enough to eat outdoors. Skip complicated cooking steps and turn to a delicious option like Yellowfin Tuna and Artichoke Pasta, which can be served as an Appetizer, Side Dish or on its own as a Light Main Course.

This dish practically calls for ingredients like Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil, which features cuts of Wild-Caught Tuna, hand-filleted in just the right amount of Olive Oil. Savory, rich and flavorful with a perfect texture, the Tuna elevates the dish with a uniquely rich and savory flavor stemming from Mediterranean inspiration.

Gun Violence, Homeless And Keeping Our City Clean

It is such an honor to serve as Mayor of Hallandale Beach. I have always served with the commitment and belief that I am here to help every resident and stakeholder which means being available every day no matter what.

My Dad was a Public Servant. He served as the Chief Chemist for the State of New Jersey. He taught me a very important life lesson. No matter what, return every phone call. Even if it is just to confirm to the caller you received it. Let the person know you value them and receive the message. Let them know you will follow up the next day.

With today’s instant technology it still holds true. Part of being successful is showing up and making sure you are listening. More importantly follow up. Over the past months there have been three issues that have been reoccurring in online chats, news and emails. Gun violence, Homeless and Right of Way maintenance. I have heard, as I am sure my colleagues have too, we are listening.

These issues are not readily solved by the simple action of the City. As a matter of fact, they do take multiple individual agencies and yes community involvement, This does not mean they do not need to be addressed. All are important to the quality of life of our community.

Over the past year and a half there have been far too many shootings in our City and the surrounding area. Our City has installed Shotspotter Technology within our borders. This Technology tells us that within seconds a gun was shot off. Our Police Department can respond.

What is alarming is that if we correlate this with calls to Police, only a small percentage, less than 10% get reported. That means people are not reporting crime. PD is showing up and sadly there are no resi-

dents willing to stand up and report. This hinders our ability to find criminals and solve crime. More importantly, prevent the further loss of life.

This fear factor is real. We get it. As a victim of an armed robbery, I personally get it. That is why we have an anonymous tip line. I requested it over 15 years ago. It

have multiple ways to report safety issues.

They also are having meetings to gather input on school issues. As Mayor, on behalf of the Commission I have spoken up at the Board Meetings on safety including Gun Detectors. Parents need to attend meetings or at least follow the meeting and share comments on agenda

have had hard times and are looking for help and can handle rehousing. Drug Addicts that need treatment before they can even deal with being in housing and the extremely Mentally Ill that need Mental Hospitals then continue Treatment or Permanent Mental Hospitalization rather than being put in jails.

I want to let our residents know that we will continue to work with all our county and state partners on the issue. The one message I did take away was that leaving individuals on the street is definitely more inhuman than forcing them to get help. This was not for elected officials but from individual testimony. Survivors on the streets and those helping get individuals out of camps.

Our right of way, the property between the road and private property owners, are to be maintained by the property owners. I believe that many people simply do not understand these rules. As a City, we make sure properties are clean through the Code Enforcement Process. Not all property is maintained by the City. Our roadways are City, County and State.

message!

As a City we cannot change Gun Laws.

As a City we can only advocate for Common Sense Laws. Residents, parents and even children need to know if we all work together we can help save lives. The school board is also working on this issue. We are not just fighting gangs, we are fighting bullying and threats on Social Media. This new Technology has made violence even worse.

They are promoting a safe way to report Cyber Bullying. Parents need to get involved with following their children’s tech activities. There is a great amount of information on the BCPS website. They

plex. Our department now has a community officer working on this issue. I just had the chance to attend the US Conference of Mayors Leadership Meeting as Trustee where there was one day committed to addressing this Humanitarian Crisis. Every city large and small has reached a turning point with this issue.

I do not want to oversimplify but it comes down to three silos; homeless that

This is where residents can help. If you see trash, report it on our City’s App MyHB. The App provides us with real time complaints. Our City will continue to address the cleanup of our areas of responsibility, but this is a shared effort.

The Final Budget Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26th, 2023 at 5:05 p.m. at City Hall located at 400 South Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. Every resident is encouraged to come out to participate or watch the meeting live.

The Perfect Summertime Pie

(Culinary.net) Summer is the time to relax, refresh and indulge in sweet and heavenly treats. While you’re lounging poolside and watching the kids play, enjoy a cool, creamy and absolutely divine dessert that’s perfect on a hot day.

This luscious Coconut Key Lime Cream Pie has a smooth texture with Toasted Shredded Coconut on top. It’s sweet, but not too sweet and will leave your taste buds wanting more as soon as you take your first bite.

Fresh out of the refrigerator, it’s ideal for everyone to share on those days when it’s just too warm outside to not have a chilled snack.

Also topped with Lime Zest and Maraschino Cherries, visually this pie is a winner with fun pops of color that will leave your mouth watering.

To make this cool, creamy creation, add Vanilla Wafers to a blender to make crumbs. Add melted Butter and blend. Add crumb mixture to the bottom of a pie pan and press against the sides. Refrigerate to make a crust.

In another large bowl, beat the Cream Cheese, the Condensed Milk and the Coconut Extract.

In a different large bowl, beat the Whipping Cream until it starts to thicken. Add the Powdered Sugar and the Lime Juice. Reserve 1 Cup of the whipped topping.

Add the Lime Juice, the Coconut Flakes and the reserved whipped topping to the Cream Cheese mixture then stir to combine it.

Add the Cream Cheese mixture to the Pie Crust and smooth it out. Top it with the whipped topping then garnish it with the Toasted Coconut, the Lime Zest and the Maraschino Cherries.

It’s the perfect pie to enjoy whether you’re outside enjoying some sunshine or

inside, taking a break from the summer fun. After being chilled, all of the flavors combine to leave you with a delicious, one of a kind treat.
