Christmas Has Become Yet Another Trigger Word

Innovative Eyewear Unveils Its Seamless Smart Eyewear Experience With the integration of ChatGPT, users can now experience a new level of convenience and connectivity

By John & Nisha Whitehead

Over the years Christmas has racked up many casualties The season for giving has turned into the season for getting…and for getting offended. Over the years, Christmas casualties in the campaign to create one large national safe space have ranged from the beloved animated classic Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (denounced for promoting bullying and homophobia) to the Oscar-Winning Tune “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (accused of being a date rape anthem) crooned by everyone from Dean Martin to Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel in the Movie Elf. Also on the endangered species Christmas list are such songs as “Deck The Halls,” “Santa Baby” and “White Christmas.” One publishing company even re-issued their own redacted version of Clement Clarke Moore’s famous poem “T’was The Night Before Christmas” in order to be more health conscious: the company edited out Moore’s mention of Santa smoking a pipe (“The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth/ And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath.”) Snowflakes, Page 7A

It’s That Time Of Year Be Ready For Your Upcoming Condominium HOA Annual Meeting By Christopher Carter - Real Estate Broker Associate

The keys to owning and living in a Florida Condominium Building or an HOA-Governed Community are education and participation Within the next couple of months, most Florida Condominium and Homeowners Associations will be holding their Required Annual Members Meetings. In those meetings, some new Directors may be elected to the Board and owners could vote on specific business items that affect the ongoing Administrative, Operational and Financial Health of the Association. Why are most annual meetings held in January or February? Because seasonal resident owners are here and Associations want as many owners participating as possible. The keys to owning and living

in a Florida Condominium Building or an HOA-Governed Community are education and participation, so it is important for all owners (Association members) to attend their annual meetings, either in person or via Zoom. It is also a good idea to attend a few Board Meetings throughout the year to stay current on Association Business. Yes, running a Residential Owners Association is a Business, not a Social Function. In order to better participate and cast well-informed votes, owners need to have a basic working knowledge of how their Associations handle property maintenance, manage finances, and enforce resident rules. They should also realize that Florida’s Condominium or Homeowners Association Act and the Association’s own Governing Documents regulate its function

and operation at all times. For new owners, the upcoming annual meeting might be their first real exposure to Florida Owners Association Governance. Many never even had the Governing Docs explained to them when they bought into the building or community, so their first annual meeting might be a bit intimidating. To help new owners and those who have already been there awhile be more comfortable attending and understanding what goes on at their meetings, I put together a few articles that touch on the fundamentals of Florida Residential Owners Association Function. Condominium and Homeowners Associations are regulated quite differently in Florida, though the fundamentals of good

For example, Maine’s shores inspire a Hearty Seafood Chowder, Succulent Lobster, and a sweet finish of Blueberry Pie, made from its iconic berries. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the festive flavors of Scandinavia

reign supreme with dishes like: Lutefisk, Lefse, and Swedish Meatballs taking center stage. Yet, America’s essence lies in its ever-evolving cultural mix. As our nation’s demographics shift, so do our holiday dishes, blending traditional flavors with fresh influences. Consider Oregon: a state where the rich Mexican cultural

Christmas Dishes From Page 1A Lime Juice for a citrusy punch. Butter-Basted Lemon and Key Lime Turkey Serves 10-12 Ingredients • 1 Lemon • 1 Key Lime • 3 Ounces of Softened Butter • 12 Lb. Oven-Ready Turkey, thawed if frozen • 1 Onion • 8 Ounces of Streaky Bacon • Bay Leaves and Thyme Sprigs, to garnish Instructions Grate the Rind from the Citrus Fruits, reserving the Flesh. In a bowl, mix the Butter, the Lemon and the Lime Rinds and season them with the Salt and the Pepper. Spread the Butter over a sheet of foil big enough to cover the area of the Turkey Breast. Cover it with another sheet of foil and press down to make an even layer of Butter and Chill it until it is firm. Preheat the oven to 180°F. Remove the Giblets from the Turkey and wash the Bird inside and out. Dry it well with a kitchen paper towel. Quarter the Lemon and the Lime, peel and halve the Onion. Put these in the cavity of the Bird. Loosen the skin of the Breast by sliding your hands (take off rings first) between the Flesh and the Skin — not a pleasant job, but worth doing. Peel the foil from the Chilled Butter (keep one piece of foil for a later stage) then slide it between the Breast and Skin (it will break up a bit but this is easier than spreading Soft Butter). Smooth the Skin back over the Butter then season the Turkey generously inside and out. Tie the Legs together at the top of the Drumsticks to give the Turkey a neat shape. Weigh the Bird to calculate the cooking time – allow 20 minutes per pound, plus an extra 20 minutes added on. Put the Turkey in a Dry Roasting Pan and loosely cover the Breast with a sheet of Buttered foil. Do not enclose the whole Turkey in foil. Roast the Turkey for the calculated cooking time, basting with the Pan Juices every 30-40 minutes. Half an hour before the end of cooking, remove the foil to crisp the Skin, Baste with the Pan Juices and lay the Bacon in a Lattice shape over the Breast. To test if the Turkey is cooked, pierce the Thigh with a skewer at the thickest part. If the Juices run clear, it’s done; if they are a little pink, give it 15 minutes more, and then test again. Transfer it to a serving platter and cover it tightly with foil; rest it for 15 minutes to make carving it easier. #2 Citrus-Marinated Roast Pork (Lechón) with Mojo Criollo: Florida’s substantial Cuban-American population has made Roast Pork a staple. Marinating the Pork in the Orange and the Lime Juices, the Garlic and the Spices, then roasting it until succulent and serving it with the Mojo Criollo Sauce (Garlic-Citrus Sauce) celebrates this influence. Citrus-Marinated Roast Pork (Lechón) Serves 6 Ingredients • 3 Lb. of Boneless Pork Shoulder Roast, see notes • 1/2 Cup of Orange Juice • 1/4 Cup of Lime Juice approximately 1.5 - 2 Limes • 1/4 Cup of Lemon Juice approximately 1 Lemon • 1 1/2 Teaspoons of dry Oregano • 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cumin • 1 1/2 Teaspoons of Salt • 8 Cloves of Crushed Garlic • 1/2 Onion or 1 Whole if small - sliced • Ground Pepper to taste Instructions Pat dry the Pork Roast and prepare a plastic container or freezer bag, big enough to hold it plus some liquid. Squeeze the juice from the Orange, the Lime and the Lemon. Crush or finely chop the Garlic and thinly slice the Onion. Mix the Juices with the rest of the ingredients: Dry or fresh Oregano, Cumin, Salt, Garlic, Onion and Pepper in the container/bag. Add the Pork into the Marinade and turn or seal the bag and shake it a little to cover it all over. Leave the Pork to marinate overnight in the fridge, ideally turning at least once. When ready to cook it, take the Pork out of the fridge ahead of time - around 30 -60 minutes - to allow it to come to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the Pork in a roasting dish with the Skin side up, sitting in a little of the

Citrus-Marinated Roast Pork (Lechón)

Moqueca (Brazilian Seafood Stew) Citrus Marinade Juice. Save the rest of the Marinade, including all of the Onions. Baste the Pork with the Juice in the dish after 1-2 hours and continue cooking it. Roast it for 3 hours, or a little more if needed, covering it with the foil if the top gets too brown. You should get an internal temperature of at least 170°F to be able to slice, or 190°F - 200°F to be able to shred when it’s ready. While the Pork is cooking, bring the remaining Marinade to a gentle simmer and cook it for around 5 minutes to soften the Onions. Serve this as a sauce over the Pork when serving it. #3 Moqueca (Brazilian Seafood Stew): With a growing Brazilian population, a festive Seafood Stew with Coconut Milk, Peppers, Tomatoes and Dendê Oil brings tropical warmth to the holiday table. Moqueca (Brazilian Seafood Stew) Serves 4 Ingredients - Soup • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of Fillets of Firm White Fish such as Halibut, Swordfish, or Cod, rinsed in Cold Water, Pin Bones removed, cut into large portions • 3 Cloves of Minced Garlic • 4 Tablespoons of Lime or Lemon Juice • Salt to taste • Freshly Ground Black Pepper to taste • Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1 Cup of chopped Spring Onion, or 1 Medium Yellow Onion, chopped or sliced • 1/4 Cup of Green Onion Greens, chopped • 1/2 Yellow and 1/2 Red Bell Pepper, Seeded, DeStemmed, chopped or sliced • 2 Cups of chopped or sliced Tomatoes • 1 Tablespoon of Paprika, Hungarian Sweet • Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes • 1 Large bunch of Cilantro, chopped with some set aside for Garnish • 1 14-Ounce Can of Coconut Milk

Ingredients - Rice • 1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 1/2 Onion, chopped • 1 Clove of Minced Garlic • 1 Cup of White Rice • 1 3/4 Cups of Boiling Water (check your Rice package for the appropriate ratio of liquid to Rice for the type of rice you are using) • 1 Teaspoon of Salt Instructions Coat the Fish with the Garlic and the Lime Juice, place the Fish pieces in a bowl, add the Minced Garlic and the Lime Juice so that the pieces are well coated. Sprinkle it generously all over with the Salt and the Pepper. If you are planning on serving the Soup with the Rice, start with the Rice. Bring a couple Cups of Water to a boil. Heat one Tablespoon of Olive Oil in a medium saucepan on Medium High Heat. Add the Chopped 1/2 Onion and cook, stirring, until the Onion is translucent. Add the Garlic and cook it for 30 seconds more, until the Garlic is fragrant. Add the raw White Rice and stir to coat completely with the Oil, the Onions, and the Garlic. Add the Boiling Water. (The amount depends on your brand of Rice, check the package. If no amounts are given, add 1 3/4 Cup of Water for every Cup of Rice.) Stir in 1 Teaspoon of Salt. Bring it to a simmer, then lower the heat, cover, and let it cook for 15 minutes, after which, remove from heat until ready to serve with the Soup. Start cooking the Onion, the Bell Pepper, the Tomatoes and the Onion Greens. In a large covered pan (such as a Dutch oven), coat the bottom with about 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil and heat it on Medium Heat. Add the chopped Onion and cook it for a few minutes until it is softened. Add the

Bell Pepper, the Paprika, and the Red Pepper Flakes. Sprinkle them generously with the Salt and the Pepper. (At least a teaspoon of Salt.) Cook them for a few minutes longer, until the Bell Pepper begins to soften. Stir in the Chopped Tomatoes and the Onion Greens. Bring them to a simmer and cook them for 5 minutes, uncovered and stir in the Chopped Cilantro. Layer the Vegetables with the Fish, add the Coconut Milk. Use a large spoon to remove about half of the Vegetables (you’ll put them right back in). Spread the remaining Vegetables over the bottom of the pan to create a bed for the Fish. Arrange the Fish pieces on the Vegetables. Sprinkle them with the Salt and the Pepper. Then add back the previously removed Vegetables, covering the fish. Pour coconut milk over the fish and vegetables. Simmer, cook and adjust the seasonings. Bring the soup to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover it and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Taste it and adjust the seasonings. You may need to add more Salt (likely), Lime or Lemon Juice, Paprika, Pepper, or Chili Flakes to get the soup to the desired seasoning for your taste. Garnish it with the Cilantro and serve it with the Rice. Miss Wish ‘Every Christmas table unfolds a story — a rich narrative of heritage, community, and creativity. Condominium and Homeowners Associations are regulated quite differently in Florida, though the fundamentals of good Association Administration still apply to both

Time of Year From Page 1A Association Administration still apply to both. Read about the primary difference in “Who Owns The Common Areas...” just below. The following articles touch on topics that may be of particular interest to Florida Condominium and HOA Property Owners, whether they are full-time or seasonal residents, new or long-time owners. To get some background and context on what you will see and hear at your upcoming Annual Members Meeting. Each title and/or photo links to the entire article in a new window. Read through a few of them at: www.thefloridareal estateblog.com Who Owns The Common Areas In Your Building Or Community? It is interesting to note that Florida’s Condominium Act uses the term common elements, while the Homeowners Association Act refers to Common Areas. This difference in language is a very important part of why Condominium and Homeowners Associations are regulated differently in Florida.

Association Board Or Management Company - Who’s The Boss? With Florida’s Snowbird Season getting underway, many New Owners and Seasonal Residents are realizing they are not as familiar as they would like to be with how their Associations Function and are regulated. It is essential for everyone buying into (or already living in) a Florida Condominium Building or Community governed by a Residential Owners Association to fully understand the relationship between their Boards and their Management Companies. Quorums, Voting Interests, Ballots And Proxies - Just The Basics Voting in Florida Residential Owners Associations can be very confusing. Some topics can be decided by only a Board Vote, others must be decided through an owner (Association Member) Vote. Today we are discussing this article’s headline terms, plus a bit of context on their use. Condo Docs (Part 2) Putting Them To Work For Your Association This article discusses how a COA’s 3 Recorded Governing Documents (Declaration, Articles, ByLaws) are applied to the daily operation and governance of a

Florida Residential Condominium Association. Think of these next ones as practical quick references and scorecards for how a COA applies its Formal Recorded Governing Docs. (Yes, it includes a direct link to Part 1) Does Your Management Company Work For The Board...Or The Owners? Property Owners in Condo Buildings and HOA Communities always have questions about their Association’s Function, Politics and Finances. This is one of those questions that initially appears to have a fairly straightforward answer, though becomes much more involved when you start considering how Florida Residential Owners Associations really function. And one more of general interest for Florida condo dwellers: Do I Need Flood Insurance If I Live On The 5th Floor? Flood Insurance for Florida Condo Buildings and Associations is in addition to any Individual Residence Unit Insurance an owner may purchase. Flood

Insurance is separate from any other coverage, NOT included in an Association’s Hazard, Liability, or Windstorm Coverage. Floods are a completely separate risk, and Insurance Protection for them requires a separate policy. That’s probably enough to get you started. There are more Condo and HOARelated Articles on the site, so click/scroll around to find others of interest. Florida COA and HOA Operation and Administration are quite different from “up north” Residential Owners Associations. As mentioned above, the first annual meeting new owners attend is often their initial exposure to Association Function. Going in with a little background should help you feel more comfortable and ready to participate. Editor’s Note: Christopher Carter is NOT an attorney. He does not give legal advice. “Nobody Is Above The Law” Jury Finds Aventura Police Officer Guilty Of False Imprisonment, Aggravated Assault www.browardsao.com

David Delgado was found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of false imprisonment, all felonies, and one count of battery, a misdemeanor A jury found an Aventura Police Officer Guilty of all charges related to an incident where he illegally detained two men and pointed a gun at them in a misunderstanding over a cellphone, Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor announced last Tuesday. Jurors reached their verdict on Tuesday afternoon after deliberating for about eight hours at the conclusion of the trial in Broward Circuit Court. They found David Delgado, (DOB 03/ 11/1993), Guilty of Two Counts of Aggravated Assault With A Deadly Weapon, Two Counts of False

Imprisonment, all Felonies, and One Count of Battery, a Misdemeanor. The evidence showed that the officer took the law into his own hands after he assumed that the two men were trying to steal a cellphone from his wife. They had accidentally ended up with her cellphone after she valeted their car at the Aventura Mall on May 20, 2023. The men had several phone conversations with his wife and tried to meet up with her to return her phone. The men, who are musicians, performed at a festival at Bayfront Park that day and were rushing to perform at a second event the same day in Lauderhill. When their efforts to meet up failed, they told the woman they had to rush to the second event but they would return it to her the next day in Aventura. According to the evidence and testimony in trial, Delgado tracked the phone,

drove at high speed from Miami to Broward, and showed up in uniform in his marked Aventura Police Department vehicle at their location in Pompano Beach. The victims said he pointed his gun at them, detained them, pushed one of the men against the police cruiser and handcuffed him. The men explained that they had been communicating with the woman about safely returning the phone and handed it over immediately. “Our job is to pursue justice and hold offenders accountable whether they wear a badge or not,” said Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor. “Nobody is above the law.”

The trial prosecutors were Assistant State Attorneys Justin McCormack and Janine Rice. Sentencing by Broward Circuit Judge Gary M. Farmer, Jr. will be scheduled early next year. The officer remains free on bond pending sentencing. The maximum possible penalty for the offenses is up to 21 years in state prison but the defendant’s preliminary sentencing guidelines recommend a prison term of more than 3 1/2 years in state prison. People with Dementia can still, and should be encouraged to, enjoy and participate in the spirit of the holiday season

Caring For A loved One During The Holiday Season The DOs And DON’T’s For Families Who Have A Loved One With Dementia With the holiday season in full swing, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is offering tips to help the millions of Americans caring for a loved one with Dementia to celebrate the holidays with their loved one in a Dementia-friendly manner. “People with Dementia can still, and should be encouraged to, enjoy and participate in the spirit of the holiday season. Because of the way Dementia-Related Illnesses impact the brain, they may not be able to do it exactly as they did prior to the onset of Dementia,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “By being adaptable and sensitive to the person’s needs and wishes, caregivers can help create a joyous, Dementia-friendly holiday season for their loved one with Dementia.” AFA offers these dos and don’ts for creating a Dementia-friendly holiday season: Do: Keep decorations simple. Decorating is part of the holiday season fun, however, too much stimulation may be challenging for someone with Dementia. Keep decorations festive, but simple. Instead of elaborate decorations, choose a few favorite items. Phase in decorations over a period of days so that changes to the person’s environment are less confusing. Don’t: Over decorate or use dangerous decorations. Too many flickering lights or noisy items could overwhelm someone living with Dementia. Changes to the person’s environment might cause disorientation, which may then lead to wandering. Be aware of safety issues: fragile decorations can shatter into sharp fragments and decorations that look like food or candy could be mistaken for edible treats, creating a choking or dental hazard. Do: Adapt past favorite traditions or create new and viable ones. Build on old traditions when appropriate, such as enjoying favorite music or movies, or looking at pictures of past holiday celebrations. Adapt past traditions as well; if the person always sent out holiday cards or

baked holiday cookies and still wants to do so, do it together with them. If they can no longer shop for gifts for their loved ones, invite them to help with wrapping the gifts so that they feel involved. Start new traditions that center on activities and events the person enjoys and can do, such as touring neighborhood holiday lights; plan to do it together. Whenever possible, ask what traditions are important to your loved one—it keeps them engaged, and helps you prioritize and plan appropriately. Don’t: Dwell on past practices. Take a strengths-based and person-centered approach and incorporate what the person can do and what they choose to do now, rather than dwelling on what they used to do. Focus on those things that bring joy and let go of activities that seem too stressful. It is normal to feel some sadness about changes and losses, especially during a holiday. Acknowledge these feelings and then move on to new ways to celebrate. Do: Create a safe and calm space. Create a space where your loved one can sit comfortably during a holiday gathering, and where guests can visit in small groups or one-to-one. To the greatest extent possible, maintain the person’s normal routine when scheduling visits or holiday gatherings; disruptions in routine can be difficult for someone living with Dementia. Don’t: Neglect safety. Be very mindful of potential tripping hazards on the floor, such as wires for decorations, as Dementia can cause changes in vision, depth perception, and gait. Securely hook Christmas Trees to the wall to avoid falls and use Menorahs or Kinaras with electric candles to reduce fire hazards. Alzheimer’s Disease, which is the most common form of Dementia, affects more than 6 million Americans. The number of people in the U.S. with Alzheimer’s Disease is expected to more than double by 2060, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The AFA Helpline is available seven days a week to help provide additional information about creating Dementia-

friendly holidays or any other caregiving questions. Connect with a Licensed Social Worker by phone at: 1 (866) 232-8484. Via Web Chat: www.alzfdn.org - Or Text Message: (646) 586-5283. The Web Chat and Text Message features can serve individuals in more than 90 different languages. Holiday Gift Guide for People Living with Dementia Holiday shopping and gift-giving can often be challenging, but even more so when shopping for a person living with dementia. Depending on the stage of disease, some well-intentioned gifts may no longer be appropriate or practical for the person. For the holiday season, the Alzheimer’s Association released its 2023 Holiday Gift Guide, offering gift ideas for individuals living in the early, middle and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The guide also includes gift suggestions aimed at keeping those living with dementia engaged and involved in everyday tasks, as well as gift ideas for the 11 million family members and friends across the country serving as unpaid caregivers for these individuals. 5 gifts for people living with Alzheimer’s - in the early stages • Sticky notes or an erasable white board to list reminders or the day’s activities. • Baskets or trays that can be labeled within cabinets or drawers. • Gift cards for ride-sharing services or a favorite activity (golf, movie, restaurant) allowing the person to remain active. • GPS trackers (bracelets, watches, small trackers) or enrollment in a safe return program to keep the person safe. • A “memory” calendar featuring family photos write in special family occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. 5 gifts for people living with Alzheimer’s in the middle-to-late stages • Music playlists that include the person’s favorite

In fact, just a 20minute break each day can help lower a caregiver’s stress and help avoid burnout. • Self-made coupons for cleaning the house, cooking a meal, mowing the lawn. • Gift cards and certificates for restaurants or meal delivery, laundry/dry cleaning services, lawn care services, computer/technology support, maid services, and personal pampering services such as massages and pedicures. • Books - in addition to giving novels on the caregiver’s “must read” list, there are a number of books on caregiving and maintaining self-health. • Self-care items such as a bundle of personal care items (moisturizers, bath bombs and soaks, foot creams, scrubs, soaps).

Snowflakes From Page 1A In the politically correct quest to avoid causing offense, Christmas keeps getting axed. Examples abound. Schools across the country now avoid anything that alludes to the true meaning of Christmas such as angels, the baby Jesus, stables and shepherds. In many of the nation’s schools, Christmas Carols, Christmas Trees, wreaths and candy canes have also been banned as part of the effort to avoid any reference to Christmas, Christ or God. One school even outlawed the colors red and green, saying they were Christmas colors and thus, illegal. Students asked to send seasonal cards to Military Troops have been told to make them “holiday cards” and instructed not to use the words “Merry Christmas” on their cards. Many schools have redubbed their Christmas concerts as “winter holiday programs” and refer to Christmas as a “winter festival.” Some schools have canceled holiday celebrations altogether to avoid offending those who do not celebrate the various holidays. Things have not been much better outside the schools, muddled by those who subscribe to the misguided notion that the Constitution requires that anything religious in nature be banned from public places. Clearly, Christmas has become one of many casualties in the misguided dispute over the so-called “separation of church and state,” a controversy that has given rise to a disconcerting and unconstitutional attempt to sanitize public places of any reference to God or religion. Yet there’s a really simple solution to this annual angst of whether students and teachers can display Christmas-related posters, wear Christmas colors of red and green or sing Christmas Songs and that is for government officials to stop being such Humbugs and create a vibrant, open environment where all expression can flourish. While the First Amendment prohibits the government from forcing religion on people or endorsing one particular religion over another, there is no legitimate legal reason why people should not be able to celebrate the season freely or wish each other a Merry Christmas or even mention the word Christmas. After all, the First Amendment affirms the right to Freedom For Religion, not Freedom From Religion.

There is no legitimate legal reason why people should not be able to celebrate the season freely

Many schools have redubbed their Christmas concerts as “winter holiday programs” and refer to Christmas as a “winter festival.” Hoping to clear up the legal misunderstanding over the do’s and don’ts of celebrating Christmas, The Rutherford Institute’s Constitutional Q&A on “Twelve Rules of Christmas” provides basic guidelines for lawfully celebrating Christmas in schools, workplaces and elsewhere. Yet while Christmas may be the “trigger” for purging Christmas from public places, government forums and speech— except when it profits Corporate America—it is part and parcel of the greater trend in recent years to whittle away at Free Speech and trample the First Amendment underfoot. Anything that might raise the specter of controversy is avoided at all costs. We are witnessing the emergence of an unstated yet court-sanctioned riht, one that makes no appearance in the

Constitution and yet seems to trump the First Amendment at every turn: the right to not be offended. In this way, emboldened by phrases such as “hate crimes,” “bullying,” “extremism” and “microaggressions,” Free Speech has been confined to carefully constructed “Free Speech Zones,” criminalized when it skates too close to challenging the status quo, shamed when it butts up against politically correct ideals, and muzzled when it appears dangerous. At the slightest hint of trouble, government officials (and corporations) are inclined to chuck anything that might be objectionable. Yet when all is said and done, what the Police State really wants is a nation of snowflakes, snitches and book burners: a

legalistic, intolerant, elitist, squealing bystander nation willing to turn on each other and turn each other in for the slightest offense, while being incapable of presenting a united front against the threats posed by the government and its cabal of Constitution-destroying agencies and corporate partners. You want to know why this country is in the state it’s in? The answer is the same no matter what the problem might be, whether it’s the Economy, Government Corruption, Police Brutality, Endless Wars, Censorship, Falling Literacy Rates, etc.: Every one of these problems can be sourced back to the fact that “We The People” have stopped thinking for ourselves and relinquished responsibility for our lives and Well-Being to a government entity that sees us only as useful idiots. We face an immense threat in our society from this drive to obliterate our history and traditions in order to erect a saccharine view of reality. In the process, we are creating a schizophrenic world for our children to grow up in, and it is neither healthy nor will it produce the kind of people who will be able to face the challenges of a future ruled by a totalitarian regime. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, you can’t sanitize reality. You can’t scrub out of existence every unpleasant thought or idea. You can’t legislate tolerance. You can’t create enough safe spaces to avoid the ugliness that lurks in the hearts of men and women. You can’t fight ignorance with the weapons of a Police State. What you can do, however, is step up your game. Opt for kindness over curtness, and civility over Censorship. Choose Peace over Politics, and Freedom over Fascism. Find common ground with those whose Politics or opinions or lifestyles may not jive with your own. Do your part to make the world a little brighter and a little lighter, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll have a chance of digging our way out of this hole. Sharon Stone: Welcome To My Garden Her Art Has Been Praised By Collectors And Art World Luminaries In the world of Hollywood, Sharon Stone’s name has long been synonymous with beauty, talent, and charisma. Yet, beyond the glare of the silver screen and the dazzle of red carpets lies a captivating facet of Stone’s artistry that has been quietly blooming: her exquisite paintings. Stepping into Sharon Stone’s creative sanctuary, one is welcomed not only into her garden but into her soul. Known for her iconic roles in films like “Basic Instinct” and “Casino,” Stone’s venture into the world of visual arts might come as a surprise to many. However, her passion for painting has been a lifelong journey, a private escape from the limelight where she finds solace and self-expression. Stone has been painting her entire life. In her early years, her Aunt Vonne had a Master’s Degree in Painting and would create murals across the walls of the home where she lived as a child. Stone studied painting in college, and her artmaking became her laser-focus during the COVID-19 Pandemic when she entered a new creative portal. This period of planetary crisis transported Stone to open up new artistic channels, transferring her lifelong creative instincts onto the canvas. Since then, she paints every day, four to 17 hours per day. Welcome To My Garden “Welcome To My Garden,” a series of vibrant and emotionally charged paintings, stands as a testament to Stone’s profound connection with nature and her inner world. Through her art, she invites us to share in her personal haven, a lush oasis where colors, shapes, and emotions converge to create breathtaking compositions. Each stroke of Stone’s brush tells a story, drawing inspiration from the beauty of flora, the ever-changing play of light, and the depths of human experience. Her canvases burst with a kaleidoscope of hues, from the fiery warmth of sunset oranges to the serene coolness of twilight blues, mirroring the nuanced tapestry of emotions that define the human condition. One cannot help but be drawn into the intricate details meticulously crafted by Stone. Vivid flowers sway in the gentle breeze, their petals delicately rendered to convey a sense of fragility and resilience. The play of shadows and light lends an ethereal quality, as if each painting captures a fleeting moment suspended in time. But beyond the sheer visual allure,

Each stroke of Stone’s brush tells a story, drawing inspiration from the beauty of flora Stone’s art exudes an emotional depth that resonates with viewers. Behind every stroke lies a narrative, a glimpse into the artist’s innermost thoughts and feelings. Her garden becomes a metaphor for life itself, where beauty intertwines with transience, and where the cycle of growth and decay mirrors the human experience. Stone herself describes her artistic journey as a form of therapy, a way to navigate life’s complexities and find peace amid chaos. “Painting allows me to express emotions that words cannot convey,” she shares. “It’s a form of meditation, a dialogue between my soul and the canvas.” “I created these works to understand the essence of pure creativity that comes from heartfelt truth, to let go of the noise, the judgements, and the pollution of our societal pulls,” says Sharon Stone. While Stone’s acting career continues to shine brightly, her dedication to paint-

ing remains unwavering. She devotes hours to her art, immersing herself in the creative process, often finding inspiration in the serenity of her garden retreat. By Using the MyHB App for The City Hallandale Beach You Can Easily Report & Solve Issues

Code Enforcement Update Unkept Properties Impact The City As A Whole By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper

Recently the City has been addressing many issues with Code Enforcement. I have written about the process in past articles in hopes of educating residents on the limitations of what cities can do to address Blighted Conditions. Unkept Properties impact the Neighboring Properties adversely and the City as a whole. We do Cite Properties but what happens if the Owner does not correct Violations? Typically, our Staff will provide a Courtesy Notice when there are Violations on a Property. Owners have 24 hours to correct them and or contact Staff to let them know how they plan on remedying the Violation. If there is a large issue they need at least to try to correct it or get proper Permits to repair. Depending on the type of Violation, Corrective Actions can be immediate or others may take months. As long as the Owner is making a Good Faith Effort then Staff will not start Fining the Owners. Just because a Case is open and there are no comments online for a Specific Property does not mean Staff has not been in contact with the Owners. Every single Case is unique. Our goal is not to be Punitive. Our goal is to have Properties come into Compliance. So, what if the owner is Nonresponsive? They end up being Cited with a Notice of Violation. If the Violation is not addressed typically within 2 months’ time frame it will be referred to the Magistrate.

At that time, the owner can appear and plead their case. Usually, they will ask for more time with the commitment that they will bring the Property to Compliance. So, what if they do nothing and snub their nose to their neighbors, the City, and the Magistrate? Fines are set by the Magistrate and Capped at a maximum of $500 Per Day Per Violation. The Fines accrue and then become a Lien. What if this still does not get Compliance? The next step is Foreclosure. Last month, the City filed Foreclosure actions on 20 cases that had accrued 100s of thousands of dollars. These cases are not in just one section of our City and are each different. In at least one case the Fines were over $1 Million. Two owners, I understand, have already started to work towards resolution. One of the worst violators was a property in the Northwest. Readers may recall I wrote about a property with a fence without a Permitted Cargo Container, Illegal Structure without Permits and Storage of an RV on Unimproved Property. Foreclosure was filed and the owner in turn hired an attorney. Our City Attorney made it clear that until the property was in Full Compliance, the Foreclosure Action would continue. They needed to remove all Containers, remove the Structure, remove the Unpermitted Fence and remove the RV. Last week, the Containers were removed. As of Monday, they had not complied with the other Violations. They even took

down part of the original fence and then installed another Illegal Fence without a Permit. Obviously, the Fines are still in place and a new Violation was Issued. So, what happens to all those Fines once the property comes to compliance? The City has a Mitigation Process. It is a process where the owner can request a reduction in Fines. Homesteaded Property can mitigate up to 90% of the Fines. Depending on if there is a Significant Hardship due to Income, Death or other factors, the Staff may recommend a Waiver. This process is with Staff only. Commissioners are not involved. In the case of Commercial NonHomesteaded Property, the maximum is 85% or the value of the property whichever is less. There is never a Full Waiver. The City Commission Policy is to have our direct cost covered. We are doing this because we want to recover the Taxpayer Dollars utilized during the process. Everyday taxpayers should not have to pay for the deeds of bad players. So, if the property is in Foreclosure what happens next? The attorney files the request to Foreclosure at the special magistrate. It then gets filed with the County Court and awaits assignment of a court date.

The City is at the mercy of the court system. The court system could be weeks to months. We certainly share with many of our residents the frustration that properties sit blighted for months and sometimes years. We cannot go onto private property without the permission of the judge. In order to ensure we are filing these cases in a timely manner we have hired outside counsel that specializes in Foreclosures. If a lot is vacant that is the one time we can go onto the property. We are by law allowed to cut the grass and remove debris. The costs that we incur providing performing grass cutting and removing debris are placed on the Property Tax Bill. I need to stress that our City does not want to take properties. We want compliance with the goal of keeping our City safe and clean. Property Maintenance is fairly basic and common sense, but some code owners may not beware of. Our Staff has put together a citywide Neighborhood Improvement Program. We are educating property-owners through door hanger flyers and on Social Media. Please take some time to learn the basics. Tis the Season for Safety This Time of Year Holiday Related Accidents Are Common The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and warmth. Families gather around festive decorations, twinkling lights, and the comforting glow of candles and fireplaces. It’s fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase your risk for a home fire. As you deck the halls this holiday season, the Department of Fire Rescue & Beach Safety has some tips to ensure your holidays are not only festive but also firesafe. Candle Caution Almost half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles, with Christmas day as the peak day for candle fires. Think about using batteryoperated flameless candles. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Mindful Lighting Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, broken bulbs, or any signs of damage before hanging them. Replace damaged lights immediately. Be sure turn off holiday lights and decorations before going to bed

or leaving the house. Consider using a timer to automate this process, ensuring your home is not unnecessarily exposed to electrical risks. Read manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect. Tree Safety A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast. Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. Also, make sure your tree does not block exits. More than one in every five Christmas tree fires were caused by a heat source too close to the tree. Get rid of your tree after Christmas or when it is dry. (See Chip-a-Tree below for tree recycling locations). For more information on how to prevent winter fires, visit: usfa.fema.gov/holiday and nfpa.org/winter. Chip-a-Tree After the holidays, Broward County Parks & Recreation is offering the annual Chip-a-Tree tree recycling program where

A Doctor’s Odyssey Of Self-Discovery Genuine Solutions That Combat Unhappiness Despite a stellar career marked by groundbreaking achievements, Dr. Ski Chilton, a Distinguished Scientist, grappled with Persistent Negative Emotions, Unpredictable Reactions, broken relationships and Deep Depression. His quest for

understanding propelled him into the science and philosophy of Free Will, questioning if humans (or he) truly possessed it. In his 2016 book, The Rewired Brain, he explored scientific literature that illustrated the existence of two rival minds, empha-

sizing the dominant influence of the unconscious mind — a factor he identified as the root cause of much of his own suffering and the overarching distress felt by humanity. Yet, this realization was not the full answer he sought. Then a Sunday morning violent encounter with an untamed Arabian horse nearly cost him his life. From his new vantage point in a wheelchair, the Internationally Acclaimed Biochemist shifted his focus from the purely Scientific to the deeply Spiritual, immersing himself in mindfulness and meditation practices. This journey not only facilitated his physical recovery but also ushered in a profound spiritual enlightenment he never saw coming. In his new, Amazon #1 Best Seller, There is Another Way to Happiness: The Four Step CAST Process that Will Transform Your Life, Chilton presents a rare blend of Science, mindfulness and spirituality to walk readers through the four, overlapping steps that helped him overcome his own cycle of Fear, Anxiety and Self-Doubt, and led to his total transformation. “It has taken me almost 60 years of life to discover that there is another way to happiness,” Chilton said. “That I have within me at any moment boundless access to a place of conscious awareness and stillness where my true self, freedom and peace reside.” In his book, Chilton traces his personal odyssey, from fame and money obsessed

egoist to fully awakened Observer of the expanses of conscious living — a journey that ultimately culminated in the creation of his CAST Process, a daily life framework encompassing four vital stages: Consciousness, Awareness, Surrender and Trust. “Finding this place has been my spiritual awakening after spending my life battling insecurities, building a toxic and false egoic self, and searching for the worth that clearly wasn’t found in my accomplishments,” Chilton said. “And that’s what I want others to embrace through reading my book.” As readers embark on their own journeys and engage in the book’s 13-week meditation/ reflection practices, they can: • Rewire destructive thought patterns • Deepen their self-awareness, peeling back the layers of their being to discover innate happiness within • Let go of ego, fear and the illusion of control • Embrace life’s unknowables, including the ultimate mystery of death • Profoundly connect and co-create with the creative intelligence of the universe “Prepare to awaken to an entirely new existence,” Chilton added. “There is Another Way to Happiness beckons you to step into a beautiful, transcendent path of living.” About The Author: Dr. Ski Chilton is a Distinguished Innovator, Academic and Entrepreneur. With a prolific record of over 160 Scientific Publications and 15 Patents, he has founded four companies and a nonprofit.
