“Make no mistake about it…your DNA can be taken and entered into a National DNA Database if you are ever arrested, rightly or wrongly, and for whatever reason.” - Justice Antonin Scalia dissenting in Maryland v. King

Be warned: the DNA Detectives are on the prowl.

Whatever skeletons may be lurking on your family tree or in your closet, whatever crimes you may have committed, whatever associations you may have with those on the government’s most wanted lists: the Police State is determined to ferret them out.

In an age of overcriminali zation, round-the-clock surveil lance, and a Police State eager to flex its muscles in a show of power, we are all guilty of some

No longer can we consider ourselves innocent until proven guilty.

Now we are all suspects in a DNA lineup waiting to be matched up with a crime.

Suspect State, meet the Genetic Panopticon.

DNA Technology in the hands of Government Officials will complete our transition to a Surveillance State in which prison walls are disguised within the seemingly benevolent trappings of technological and scientific progress, National Security and the need to guard against Terrorists, Pandemics, Civil Unrest, etc.

By accessing your DNA, the Government will soon know everything else about you that they don’t already know: your family chart, your ancestry, what you

look like, your health history, your inclination to follow orders or chart your own course, etc.

It’s getting harder to hide, even if you think you’ve got nothing to hide.

Armed with unprecedented access to DNA Databases amassed by the FBI and Ancestry Website, as well as hospital newborn screening programs, Police are using Forensic Genealogy, which allows Police to match up an unknown suspect’s Crime Scene DNA with that of any family members in a Genealogy Data-base, to solve Cold Cases that have remained unsolved for decades.

Welcome To A New School Year

Exciting Announcements For Sunny Isles Beach NSE/SIB K-8 School

SIB Mayor School at Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 has started and with that comes many exciting announcements. To start, I would like to welcome our new Principal, Mr. Marc W. Schwam, to the City of Sunny Isles Beach. I got the opportunity to sit with Mr. Schwam to learn about his lovely children and wife. He is a lifelong educator, who is passionate about providing an inclusive and supportive environment for our resident’s children. I am confident that with his leadership, our school children will thrive, our school will be safe, and our parents will be proud to send their children to NSE SIB K8. To support these efforts, SIBPD will be supporting the school’s Police, by bringing back our beloved Sergeant Gonzalez as a Full-Time School Resource Officer. Sgt. Gonzalez first started at the school as the Founding SRO, has deep and meaningful relationships with the teachers, staff, students, and parents. I have known Sgt. Gonzalez for over 12 years—she is fiercely devoted to the Safety and Well-

All Suspects

From Page 1A

in a Commercial Database called GEDmatch, Genetic Genealogists are able to sidestep privacy rules that allow people to opt out of sharing their Genetic Information with Police. The end result?

Police are now able to identify and target those very individuals who explicitly asked to keep their DNA results private.

In this way, merely choosing to exercise your right to privacy makes you a suspect and puts you in the Police State’s crosshairs.

It no longer even matters if you’re among the tens of millions of people who have added their DNA to Ancestry Databases. As Brian Resnick reports, Public DNA Databases have grown so massive that they can be used to find you even if you’ve never shared your own DNA.

That simple transaction—a spit sample or a cheek swab in exchange for getting to learn everything about one’s ancestral makeup, where one came from, and who is part of one’s extended family—is the price of entry into the Suspect State for all of us.

After all, a DNA print reveals everything about “who we are, where we come from, and who we will be.” It can also be used to predict the physical appearance of potential suspects.

It’s what Police like to refer to as a “modern fingerprint.”

Yet in the Police State’s pursuit of criminals, anyone who comes up as a possible DNA match—including distant family members—suddenly becomes part of a circle of suspects that must be tracked, investigated and ruled out.

In this way, “guilt by association” has taken on new connotations in a technological age in which one is just a DNA sample away from being considered a person of interest in a Police Investigation.

Indeed, the Government has been relentless in its efforts to get hold of our DNA, either through mandatory programs carried out in connection with Law Enforcement and Corporate America, by warrantlessly accessing our familial DNA shared with Genealogical Services such as Ancestry and 23andMe, or through the collection of our “shed” or “touch” DNA.

Get ready, folks, because the Government has embarked on a diabolical campaign to create a nation of suspects predicated on a massive National DNA Database.

All 50 states now maintain their own DNA Government Database, although the protocols for collection differ from state to

Being of our youngest residents. The expectation is that with these changes, our school will once again lead the District in Student Scores, Athletics, Mathematics, Science, and the Arts. I am confident that Mr. Schwam will be a valued collaborator and innovator, adding to the richness of the fabric of our community.

Lastly, I want to acknowledge the years of dedication of our Founding Assistant Principal, Ms. Tapia, who regrettably is moving on to another school. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Ms. Tapia and seeing her unwavering commitment to our community. She has been an integral part of SIB, instrumental in helping to bring the highest standards of education, a loving mentor to the teachers, a warm and inviting presence for our parents, and a true friend to many. With the deepest respect, may she be successful and happy in her next position. We will miss her terribly. Please join me in a warm and hospitable welcome to Mr. Schwam, welcome back to Sgt. Gonzalez, and best wishes to Ms. Tapia.

state. Increasingly, much of the Data from Local Data Banks are being uploaded to CODIS, the FBI’s massive DNA Database, which has become a de facto way to identify and track the American people from birth to death.

Even hospitals have gotten in on the game by taking and storing newborn babies’ DNA, often without their parents’ knowledge or consent. It’s part of the Government’s mandatory genetic screening of newborns. In many states, the DNA is stored indefinitely.

What this means for those being born today is inclusion in a Government Database that contains intimate information about who they are, their ancestry, and what awaits them in the future, including their inclinations to be followers, leaders or troublemakers.

The ramifications of this kind of DNA Profiling are far-reaching.

At a minimum, these DNA Databases do away with any semblance of privacy or anonymity.

These Genetic Databases and Genomic Technology also make us that much more vulnerable to creeps and cyberstalkers, Genetic Profiling, and those who would weaponize the Technology against us.

Unfortunately, the debate over Genetic privacy—and when one’s DNA becomes a Public Commodity outside the protection of the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition on warrantless searches and seizures—continues to lag far behind the Government and Corporate America’s encroachments on our rights.

What this amounts to is a scenario in which we have little to no defense against charges of wrongdoing, especially when “convicted” by Technology, and even less protection against the Government sweeping up our DNA in much the same way it sweeps up our phone calls, emails and text messages.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, it’s only a matter of time before the Police State’s pursuit of criminals from the past expands into Genetic Profiling and a preemptive hunt for criminals of the future.

Paving The Way To A Better Future

Budget Workshops And Discussions Are Underway in Hallandale Beach

In last week’s article, I made a presentation about the Budget and changes that may occur during the Workshop. Our Budget was passed unanimously, and we actually did have a robust conversation about Repaving Roadways.

We all have been hearing complaints about the neglected Roadways. For years before COVID-19 our City always had a Program where we would Repave Roadways in each Quadrant in a rotational manner. For the past years no repaving has been budgeted for or taken place. Our City then, like all others, had to deal with the financial uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In the past we utilized money from our Transportation Fund. This Fund has never been a large Fund and consists of a small portion of Gas Taxes. Any additional funding had to come from our General Fund. Not all streets are City streets, some are State Roads and County Roads that are refurbished and partnered with Broward County. Broward County gets the lion share of all Gas Taxes.

Last year we put Repaving back in the Budget and allocated $500,000 to Repave Roads that were not slated for Underground Infrastructure Improvements. The schedule was posted, and the contractor

Voted As The Top Pick For Labor Day Fun

Having a BBQ or picnic on this day has become a time-honored tradition among American families. It’s not just about sizzling steaks and zesty sides; it’s a flavorful tribute to the nation’s backbone, our hardworking souls. As we bid ‘so long’ to summer’s embrace, these BBQs and picnics represent a quintessential American toast to unity, prosperity, and the simple joys of life. So, why do we gather ‘round the grill every Labor Day? Because nothing says ‘America’ quite like celebrating hard work with a side of smoky goodness!

As summer wanes on September 4th, many families choose to celebrate the last of the warm weather outdoors – but where is the best place to celebrate Labor Day?

Get Ready For King Tides

Unusually High Tides, also known as King Tides, are expected periodically through late November. Flooding in lowlying areas is more likely during this time of the year due to the close proximity of the moon which creates King Tides. These Seasonal High Tides, combined with Rising Sea Levels and Inclement Weather Conditions, exacerbate Flooding Risks. Rainfall, Wind strength and direction also have a significant impact on the height of the Tides causing them to come in higher or lower than predicted. With seven miles of Shoreline, 7.9 Miles of Canals, and a Flat Topography, Hollywood is vulnerable to the effects of Sea Level Rise and Tidal Flooding.

Based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s

Tide Predictions, above average

High Tides are expected:

• August 29 - September 3

• September 26 - October 3

• October 15 - October 17

• October 26 - November 1

• November 12 - November 16

• November 24 - November 28

High Seasonal Tides can cause LowLying Coastal Areas to Flood. Motorists are urged to use caution and seek alternate routes to avoid traveling on flooded streets. Coastal roads, parking lots and docks in vulnerable areas could Flood during the times of High Tide.

Seasonal Tides could raise the Water Level by more than 2 and a half feet dur-

curement rules and regulations the work was stopped. Staff worked with our legal and procurement departments to address how we could Budget and plan this work in the most Efficient and Cost-Effective Way. During this Budget Workshop it was confirmed that we will be able to start Repaving throughout the City and now the Fund will be $1,000,000. Repaving should begin in January. Commissioner Butler brought forth a discussion based on the fact that we are looking at a Stable Budget. Is there any way that we can put more money into Repaving? Many residents, particularly in the Golden Isles Area, have been requesting and waiting for Repaving for years. We all pay the same Millage Rate but that does not mean we pay the same amount in Taxes. New residents that have moved in are paying over $75,000 a year simply in Taxes and are frustrated.

Ironically three years ago there was $100,000 I had requested in the GI Safe Neighborhood District that was proposed by the Advisory Board to seal the streets.

The GISND is a separate Taxing District that is only paid for by the residents that live in that District.

The City Commission agreed that pretty much every Road needs to be Paved since it hadn’t been done in quite some time. We also agreed that if we are digging up Roadways for Underground Infrastructure it seems to be foolish to put down brand new asphalt and then just dig it up to patch it. So, the debate became how do we Amend the Budget or add to it.

On the Western Side of the City there’s going to be over $20 Million in CRA Community Redevelopment Dollars redo-

ing Sidewalks, Lighting and Trees. Golden Isles or Three Islands Safe Neighborhood Districts are looking at similar plans but do not have the benefit of a CRA. Funding for projects East of 14th Avenue must come from other Revenues such as the General Fund, Transportation Fund, Grants or directly from the Residents living in those Districts.

At the end of a robust debate consensus was reached that Staff can expedite and move forward without the detriment to any other projects we would support Repaving Roads that were not planned to be dug up. Staff were directed to work on programming and scheduling.

On another note, I asked when they were going to be Repairing Hallandale Beach Boulevard. This Road is a State Road. Director of Public Works Jeff Odoms informed us that he believes it is slated for refurbishment, but we’ll be requesting from the Florida Department of Transportation what date it is slated for. There were not many more discussions during this Budget Workshop. As I wrote last week we Budget all year and work on the area’s topics.

The first Budget Hearing is scheduled on Friday, September 13th, 2023 at 5:05 p.m. and the final Budget Hearing is scheduled on Tuesday, September 26th, 2023 at 5:05 p.m. Both meetings are at City Hall located at 400 South Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009. Every resident is encouraged to come out to participate or watch the meeting live.

It’s a question posed to 3,000 families by: www.FamilyDestinationsGuide.com - who polled respondents in each state to find out which location, in their experience, is the best to celebrate a Labor Day meal.

Floridians’ top pick was John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. As the first underwater park in the United States, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and marine wonders. Families can gather at the park’s designated picnic areas, surrounded by the lush tropical landscape and overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Park encompasses approximately 70 nautical square miles. While the Mangrove Swamps and tropical hammocks in the park’s upland areas offer visitors a unique experience, it is the Coral Reefs and their associated Marine Life that bring most visitors to the park. The park’s Snorkeling and Glass-Bottom Boat Tours provide a chance for unparalleled Marine exploration, adding an educational and adventurous dimension to the outing. Canoeing and Kayaking through the

park’s waters are popular activities; fishing is permitted in designated areas. Visitors can enjoy walking on short trails, picnicking, or swimming at the Beach. The Visitor Center has a 30,000-Gallon Saltwater Aquarium and nature videos are shown in its theater.

In second place came Myakka River State Park in Sarasota. With its expansive landscapes, including wetlands, forests, and the Iconic Myakka River, the Park provides a stunning backdrop that elevates the festive atmosphere. Well-appointed picnic areas, shaded by towering Oak Trees, offer a comfortable setting for meals and relaxation. Children can explore the park’s playgrounds and the engaging nature trails, while adults can partake in birdwatching, boating, and even canopy walks.

And rounding up the top 3 was Fort De Soto Park in Tierra Verde. It has wellequipped picnic areas, complete with grills and shaded seating. Children can enjoy Beach Activities and explore the fort’s ruins, while adults can stroll along

the Scenic Trails and appreciate the panoramic views. The park’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico offers opportunities for swimming, fishing and water-based fun.

“Each year, families across the nation come together to celebrate Labor Day in their unique way, reflecting the diverse spirit of America. No matter where we choose to celebrate, the essence remains the same: gratitude for the labor force that built this nation, and a desire to cherish the fleeting moments of summer!” says Rose Ackermann of: www.FamilyDestinationsGuide.com

Rise Of The Underdog

Remarkable Shift Towards Adoption Of Shelter Dogs Over Purebred Purchases

In the past, the sight of Purebred Dogs like Dachshunds, Boston Terriers, and French Bulldogs was common in American neighborhoods. However, recently a notable shift in consumers’ preferences has steered away from these Purebreds despite their previous popularity.

For some, the exorbitant cost of Purebred Dogs, which can reach up to $10,000 for Breeds such as Rottweilers and Chow Chows, is a considerable deterrent. For others, the concern is over health issues commonly associated with Purebreds. English Bulldogs and Pugs, for instance, are often plagued with Respiratory problems. Also, many individuals also feel a moral obligation to provide homes to Shelter Dogs.

Bone Voyage Dog Rescue recently conducted a Study revealing a significant shift towards Adopting Shelter Dogs over purchasing Purebreds from Breeders. A Survey of 3,000 potential Dog Owners in Florida revealed that an impressive 45% of them expressed an intent to Adopt from Shelters, marking a 5% swing towards possible Shelter Dog Ownership when contrasted with older data from the Humane Society of the United States, which indicated that 40% of Pet Dogs in households were previously Shelter Dogs.

“This increasing trend towards Shelter Dog Adoption promises substantial improvements in the Welfare of Homeless Animals. The shift could lead to a decrease in the number of Dogs in Shelters, as more are adopted,” says Annette Thompson, Executive Director of Bone Voyage Dog Rescue, when commenting on the Study.

A state-by-state analysis of the Survey data revealed the strongest preference for Shelter Dog Adoption is in Nebraska, with a remarkable 81% expressing a preference for Shelter Dogs over Purebred Breeds. In Florida 45% of residents surveyed stated they would rather Adopt from their Local Shelter vs purchasing a Dog from a Pet Store or Online.

In a complementary Study, Bone Voyage Dog Rescue used Google Search trends to understand the public’s interest in Shelter Dogs over the past year. The insights from Google mirrored the Survey

80/20

From Page 1A

data, reinforcing the shift towards Shelter Dog Ownership.

Among the top 25 states most interested in Shelter Dog Adoption, 22 demonstrated a marked shift towards this preference, as per the Survey data. Wyoming, for instance, had the highest proportion of Shelter Dog searches, reflecting its second-place ranking in the Survey. Similarly, New Mexico ranked third in Google searches for Shelter Dogs, aligning with its second-place position in the Survey for those most likely to Adopt a Shelter Dog.

The rising trend of Shelter Dog Adoption holds considerable potential for improving Animal Welfare in the U.S. This shift could have multi-faceted benefits, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the lives of the individual Dogs adopted.

Decreasing the number of Dogs residing in Shelters is a primary benefit. With more Dogs finding homes, the overall population in Shelters would shrink. Consequently, Shelters would have more resources available per Animal, including space, Staff attention, and Medical Care. This shift would result in better living conditions for the remaining Animals while reducing the strain on Shelter Resources.

Secondly, an increase in the Adoption of Shelter Dogs could influence the supply-demand dynamics of the Pet Industry. If consumers choose Adoption over purchasing from Breeders, it might discourage Unethical Breeding Practices,

including those prevalent in Puppy Mills. This change would further contribute to enhancing Animal Welfare on a larger scale.

Finally, each adopted Dog’s individual Quality Of Life would likely see significant improvements. Home environments typically offer more space, personal attention, and stability than Shelters. Adopted Dogs receive consistent Care, Training, and Socialization Opportunities, leading to better Physical Health and Behavioral outcomes. This transformation enriches the adopted Dog’s Life and can bring immeasurable joy and companionship to the family adopting.

“This rising trend of adoption not only promises a brighter future for Shelter Dogs but also signifies a broader cultural shift towards responsible Pet Ownership and empathy towards Animal Welfare,” adds Thompson. “The data certainly supports the trend, and it’s a trend that would have immense impact across the Animal Welfare Field.”

Looking To Adopt?

If you are looking to Adopt a Pet the Humane Society of Broward County is the place to visit. Here are a couple of possible family members for you to go see, you just might find the love of your life.

Sweet Diego is an energetic 3-year-old fellow who gets the zoomies when he first goes outside. Once he runs and plays a bit, he settles down and just wants to be with you and get lots of pets. Diego even

enjoyed lounging in the kiddie pool to cool off, so if you have a pool, you might find him swimming in it. He weighs about 47 pounds, and the Staff say he walks well on a leash and when he was spending time with them at the front desk, Diego was a perfect gentleman. If you have a dog at a home, a meet and greet would be recommended just to make sure everyone gets along. Thanks to a Dog lover, Diego’s Adoption Fee has been Sponsored – he just needs a chance. Will you be the one that gives him that?

If you’re looking for a Feline friend, then 8-year-old Oscar would love to go home with you. Sadly, his owner died and now he is all alone. Oscar previously lived with Dogs, so if you have one or two and they like Cats, with a slow introduction, everyone will hopefully get along. He will need time to adjust to his new home, so please give him time to settle into his new place. Thanks to Cat lovers at Real Res, they have kindly Sponsored Oscar’s Adoption Fee.

To meet Diego (ID 669775), Oscar (ID 671904) or any other pet at the Humane Society of Broward County, complete the pre-adoption application at: www.humane broward.com and then stop by. The shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312 and the Adoption Kennels open daily at 11:00 a.m. If you have any questions, call: (954) 9893977. Extension#: 6 and if you can’t Adopt, be sure to share.

Lenders against Buyer/Borrower Default.

FHA Qualifying Standards for Borrowers are more lenient than most Lenders’ Conventional Loan Programs. These standards help Buyers with Lower Credit Scores and Lower Down Payments qualify for Mortgage Financing on Primary Residences. Lenders are more willing to make Loans using these broader Qualifying Standards when they are protected by FHA Insurance.

as well as GovernmentInsured Financing Programs. Depending on the Loan Program and MI requirements, Premiums might be paid upfront, monthly, or both.

On Conventional (Not GovernmentInsured) Mortgages, those Premiums are paid to Third-Party Specialty Insurance Companies. With Government-Insured Mortgages (FHA, VA, USDA), MI Premiums are paid to the Insuring Government Agency.

(Important - The Mortgage Insurance we are discussing today is NOT to be confused with Mortgage Life Insurance, which pays off the remaining Mortgage Balance in the event of the Borrower’s death. They are very different Insurance Policies used for very different purposes.)

Most people have seen the acronym “PMI” which stands for Private Mortgage Insurance. PMI is issued by Specialty Insurance Companies for Conventional Loans in which the Buyer/Borrower has put down less than 20%. Annual

Premiums for PMI depend on Initial LTV (Down Payment Amount), Credit Score, property type, and other transaction details. PMI can be structured as a onetime payment at Closing (upfront), Monthly payments added to scheduled

Principal and Interest Payments, or a split plan combining both upfront and monthly.

Upfront, Monthly, Or Combination

only

- Upfront Guarantee Fee and Monthly

Note - Upfront MI Payments on Government-Insured Loans can be wrapped into the Loan Amount. Conventional onetime upfront MI must be paid at Closing. Lenders might pay for a Borrower’s PMI in exchange for charging a higher Interest Rate for the Life of the Loan. As we have mentioned, it is all about Lenders’ Risk Management. Ask your Licensed Loan Originator about LenderPaid Mortgage Insurance (LPMI) and other Lower Down Payment Programs.

Under the U.S. Homeowners Protection Act (HPA) of 1999, Borrowers may request in writing that Conventional PMI be removed (and ongoing PMI Payments ended) when the Loan Principal Balance is paid down to 80% (there’s that 80/20 Rule again) of the property’s Appraised Value when purchased. Also under the HPA, Lenders must remove PMI when LTV reaches 78% of the property’s Original Value, as long as Payment History has been satisfactory.

Important - this removal procedure ONLY applies to Conventional Mortgages, not Government-Insured Financing.

The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) is an Agency of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a Cabinet-Level Department of the Federal Government. To help make Mortgage Funding available to a broader range of Buyers, the FHA Insures Independent

FHA-Insured Financing includes both Upfront and Monthly Mortgage Insurance Premiums (MIP). The upfront portion can be either paid at Closing or wrapped into the total Loan Amount, and is required on all FHA-Insured Mortgage Financing. There is also an Annual MI Premium that is paid with the Borrower’s Monthly PITI (Principal, Interest, Taxes, Insurance) Payment. For FHA-Insured Mortgages, the Annual MIP stays in place for 11 years when the Initial LTV is less than 90%. This means that Buyers putting down more than 10% will be paying Monthly MI for the next 11 years unless they Refinance or move within that time.

When Buyers use a less than 10% Down Payment, FHA MIP stays in place for the Life of the Loan. In this case, Buyers could be paying Monthly MI Premiums for up to 30 years, or until they Refinance or sell the property.

There we are - a brief overview and introduction to Mortgage Insurance, an important part of the U.S. Real Estate Market.

For expanded details on Mortgage Insurance and available loan programs, speak with a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator.

Back To School Supply Drive

Help Students In Need In Broward County Public Schools

Now that kids are back in school, it is estimated that teachers will spend more than $820 on classroom supplies this year including books, snacks, pencils, paper and cleaning products. To help ease that burden for teachers and families, Broward Education Foundation, the only 501(c)3 charitable organization solely dedicated to serving students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools, has launched its Annual School Supply Drive which equips students with essential supplies and the necessities for success.

Last year, Broward Education Foundation provided school supplies to 130,000 under-resourced students in nearly 200 Broward County Title I Schools and classroom supplies for 12,000 teachers in Broward County Public Schools.

“A little change can make a big impact,” said Jean McIntyre, Board Chair Of Broward Education Foundation. “For these students, school supplies are a luxury, and we are so grateful for the community’s help in getting our students off to a great start this fall.”

According to 90% of teachers surveyed by the national Non-Profit Kids in

Need Foundation, three out of four students arrive to class without the requisite school supplies necessary for learning.

“More than 200,000 students in Broward County live in poverty which makes our School Supply Drive so important,” said Shea Ciriago, CEO Of Broward Education Foundation. “We all want the best for our students, and we want to give them what they need to succeed. This past fiscal year, the school supplies we donated were valued at more than $2 Million, and with the help of the companies and individuals in our community, we can surpass that amount this year.”

How To Help

• Donate monetarily to: www.browardedfoundation.org/drive

• Collect school supplies at your business or organization. Donations can be dropped off at the Broward Education Foundation School Supply Center at 2300 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33069. Or call to have them picked up: (754) 321-2030.

• Interested in hosting a Supply Drive? Call the Broward Education Foundation School Supply Center at: (754) 321-9020. Or email: mari-lee.baxter@browardschools.com.

• Host a virtual drive within your organization: $10 can supply 200 pencils to help support student learning, $35 can provide a student with a backpack filled with essential school supplies, $100 can support a teacher with essential classroom tools and resources, and $250 can provide art supplies for an entire classroom.

The school supplies needed most include backpacks, compositions books (black), crayons, erasers (pink rectangular), folders (2 pocket), glue, glue sticks, hand sanitizer (individual), highlighters, hole punchers (single), index cards (3”x5”), markers, notebook paper (3-hole), pencil pouches, pencil sharpeners, pencils (#2 with erasers), pencils (mechanical), pens (black and blue ink), rulers, scissors (children’s), spiral notebooks (wide-ruled) and tape (clear).

About Broward Education Foundation: The NonProfit Broward Education Foundation aligns with Broward County Public Schools by providing Grants for teachers who develop innovative curriculum that increases student outcomes; vitally needed school supplies for students and teachers in Title I Schools; scholarships for qualified high school seniors; and support for programs and initiatives like Debate, TurnAround Arts, STEM and more. Each year, Broward Education Foundation contributes nearly $4 Million to Broward County Schools, serving as the catalyst for educational excellence.

In 2018, and responding to the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy, Broward Education Foundation initiated a GoFundMe, established the Official Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund and raised $10.5 Million for victims’ families, survivors and those impacted. Broward Education Foundation is proven agile, adept and responsive to shifting needs in education and our community. comes to meal prep, many families find it easier to tell children to go play rather than bringing them into the kitchen to help create meals.

“One of the best ways to encourage children to try new foods or simply eat their vegetables is to allow them the opportunity to plan and prepare a meal,” said Emily Hicks, a registered dietitian nutritionist for KinderCare Learning Centers. “Involving children in meal planning, preparation and serving in ageappropriate ways helps give them some autonomy in a world in which they often feel they do not have many choices. This can help reduce stress and food fights at mealtime, creating a more peaceful and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

Meal preparation can also bring certain classroom lessons such as counting and

nutritional benefits of healthy foods. Consider these tips to get kids more involved in mealtimes:

1. Choose mealtimes when the family is typically together and make preparation a team effort. Allow children to pick out vegetables or other items at the grocery store (or from the fridge, freezer or pantry) to prepare. Alternatively, if you have a few meal options planned for the week, children can help decide what to make on which days. The key is to empower children to make choices, thus helping develop a sense of responsibility and encouraging variety in food choices.

2. Cooking is a great sensory experience for kids of all ages. Allow children

with adult guidance. Even younger children can assist by using child-safe utensils to peel or chop food, sprinkle toppings, pour dressings or combine premeasured meal components.

3. Children can help place food on the table and serve themselves at young ages. Young children may find it easier to serve themselves by using measuring cups instead of serving utensils. Encourage children to try some of each food on the table but try not to push them to eat anything in particular. Instead, give them time and multiple opportunities to try different foods. If they are able, teach children how to pass food to others at the table and engage in conversation. Sharing at the table can help foster social development and family connections.

After mealtime, children can help clean up and put things away. Even if they can’t reach the sink, children can help clear items from the table. They can also assist with putting dishes in the dishwasher or ferrying clean dishes to an adult to put back in cupboards and drawers. Additionally, they can help wipe up spills and crumbs, and push in chairs, too.

“The benefits of family mealtime go beyond health,” Hicks said. “Involving your children in your mealtime routines can bring food and fun to the table, creating a sense of belonging that will boost the whole family’s well-being. Remember, you don’t have to stick to a routine 100% of the time to be beneficial. Just do your best to keep routines when possible and practice balance.”
