The U.S. has spent trillions of tax dollars on endless wars

Free Speech was dealt one knock-out punch after another

Break The Cycle: In 2024 Say No To The Government’s Cruelty, Brutality And Abuse By John & Nisha Whitehead

“The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse.” — Edmund Burke Folks, it’s time to break the cycle of Abuses—cruel, brutal, immoral, unconstitutional and unacceptable—that have been heaped upon us by the government for way too long. Here’s just a small sampling of what we suffered through in 2023. The government failed to protect our lives, liberty and happiness. The predators of the Police State wreaked havoc on our freedoms, our communities, and our lives. The government didn’t listen to the citizenry, refused to abide by the Constitution, and treated the citizenry as a source of funding and little else. Police Officers shot unarmed citizens and their household pets. Government agents— including local Police—were armed to the teeth and encouraged to act like soldiers on a battlefield. Bloated government agencies were allowed to fleece taxpayers. Government technicians spied on our emails and phone calls. And government contractors made a killing by waging endless wars abroad. The president became more imperial. Although the Constitution invests the President with very specific, limited powers, in recent years, American presidents have claimed the power to completely and almost unilaterally alter the landscape of this country for good or for ill. The powers amassed by each successive president through the negligence of Congress and the courts—powers which add up to a toolbox of terror for an imperial ruler— empower whoever occupies the Oval Office to act as a dictator, above the law and beyond any real accountability. The presidency itself has become an imperial one with permanent powers.

The cost of endless wars drove the nation deeper into Debt. Policing the globe and waging endless wars abroad hasn’t made America—or the rest of the world—any safer, but it has made the military industrial complex rich at taxpayer expense. The courts failed to uphold justice. Time and time again, the Supreme Court failed to right the wrongs being meted out by the American Police State. The Surveillance State rendered Americans vulnerable to threats from government spies, Police, hackers and power failures. Thanks to the government’s ongoing efforts to build massive databases using emerging surveillance, DNA and biometrics technologies, Americans became sitting ducks for hackers and government spies alike. The rich got richer, and the poor went to jail. This is no longer a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.” It is fast becoming a government “of the rich, by the elite, for the corporations,” and its rise to power is predicated on shackling the American taxpayer to a debtors’ prison guarded by a phalanx of politicians, bureaucrats and militarized police with no hope of parole and no chance for escape. “Show your papers” incidents skyrocketed. We are not supposed to be living in a “show me your papers” society. Despite this, the U.S. Government has introduced measures allowing Police and other Law Enforcement Officials to stop individuals (citizens and noncitizens alike), demand they identify themselves, and subject them to pat downs, warrantless searches, and interrogations. Free Speech was dealt one knock-out punch after another. Protest Laws, Free Speech Zones, Bubble Zones, Trespass

Zones, Anti-Bullying Legislation, Zero Tolerance Policies, Hate Crime Laws and a host of other legalistic maladies dreamed up by politicians and prosecutors conspired to corrode our core Freedoms, purportedly for our own good. On paper—at least according to the U.S. Constitution—we are technically free to speak. In reality, however, we were only as free to speak as a government official—or corporate entities such as Facebook, Google or YouTube—allowed. Police became even more militarized and weaponized. Despite concerns about the government’s steady transformation of Local Police into a Standing Military Army, Local Police Agencies continued to acquire weaponry, training and equipment suited for the battlefield. There are now reportedly more bureaucratic (nonmilitary) government civilians armed with high-tech, deadly weapons than U.S. Marines. Schools turned into prisons. So-called school “safety” policies, which run the gamut from Zero Tolerance Policies that punish all infractions harshly to Surveillance Cameras, Metal Detectors, Random Searches, Drug-Sniffing Dogs, School-Wide Lockdowns, Active-Shooter Drills and Militarized Police Officers, turned schools into prisons and young people into prisoners. The Deep State took over. The American system of Representative Government was overthrown by the Deep State—A.K.A. the Police State A.K.A. the Military Industrial Complex—a profitdriven, Militaristic Corporate State bent on Total Control and Global Domination through the imposition of Martial Law here at home and by fomenting wars abroad. When in doubt, follow the money trail. It always points the way.

The takeaway: Everything the founders of this country feared has come to dominate in modern America. As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, if freedom is to survive at all, “We The People” must refuse to allow the government’s abusive behavior to be our new normal. There is nothing normal about Egregious Surveillance, Roadside Strip Searches, Police Shootings of unarmed citizens, Censorship, Retaliatory Arrests, the Criminalization of Lawful Activities, Warmongering, Indefinite Detentions, SWAT Team Raids, Asset Forfeiture, Police Brutality, Profit-Driven Prisons, or Pay-To-Play Politicians. Let’s not take the mistakes, carnage, Toxicity and Abuse of this past year into 2024. As long as we continue to allow callousness, cruelty, meanness, Immorality, ignorance, Hatred, intolerance, Racism, Militarism, Materialism, meanness and Injustice—magnified by an echo chamber of nasty tweets and governmentsanctioned brutality—to trump justice, fairness and equality, there can be no hope of prevailing against the Police State. Editor’s Note: John Whitehead is an Attorney and Author who has written, debated and practiced widely in the area of Constitutional Law, Human Rights and Popular Culture. John Whitehead’s Commentary are his views and he is open for discussion, he can be contacted at: johnw@rutherford.org. Information about The Rutherford Institute is available at: www.rutherford.org

Sunday, January 28th, 2024 in Downtown Hollywood - 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Because My Hollywood Pride is the first Pride anywhere in the world each year, they have chosen the theme “Pride Starts Here!” to guide them for 2024. Over the last couple of years, Florida has been a leader in Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation, and as a result LGBTQ+ People, especially the

youth, are the target of unfair and unequal treatment. LGBTQ+ People have long created their own chosen families in the face of adversity and marginalization. With that in mind, they are inviting you to join them as though they are welcoming you back to our home, and to remind everyone that we are stronger together. Their mission is to provide a space where everyone is welcome, and where you can feel proud to be who you are. And

it is in that space where you can laugh, dance and learn together. In 2024, they will continue to provide a place for kids, youth and families to come together, and also be a place that invites everyone in to learn more about LGBTQ+ Art and Culture, and where you can be celebrated. POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance-A Fantastical Book Becomes A Phenomenal Show This past holiday season, South Florida’s entertainment landscape was filled with a variety of cheerful happenings, colorful displays and traditional entertainment. There were Christmas attractions and standard holiday shows all around town. The highlight of the season for my family was the new book-to-stage-show premiere of POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstace at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. I hadn’t been to the Diplomat in a decade and thought it an unusual location for what was billed as a holiday cirque show.

Fortunately, there are creative minds like Neil Goldberg, who wrote the book, created the show, and invents new ways and places for the world to be entertained. Together with LA-based Capture Studio Group, the Diplomat was transformed with an abundance of imagination into a wondrous land of enchantment. Once inside the resort, the POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstace experience was like following the Yellow Brick Road into a Wonka Factory at Hogwarts. Imagine the Munchkins as charismatic Sprites, Oompa Loompas as the unexpected Santa’s drones and the Wizards as

spellbinding magicians of disbelief. Truly out of this world! The original production was cleverly based on the award-winning book’s story of three best friends, who study music, magic and circus at a secret university, where holiday preparations include lessons like - using your talents for good in this season of smiles, and by doing so makes life worthwhile. Worthwhile you ask? Categorically, yes, and undeniably gave us a lot to smile and cheer about. My kids read the book before seeing the show and even though the holidays

are over, can’t put it down or stop singing the songs. They were in awe, my wife and I thoroughly entertained, and my parents were surprisingly mesmerized. These people know how to put on a show! The talent was top-notch, original music joyfully contagious and the costumes like nothing we’d ever seen before. Add to the non-stop action a colossal setting surrounding a packed audience with imagery and special effects, and you’ve been transported into the POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance Universe, a place I can’t wait to take the family again.

Americans say they avoid uncomfortable money talk at work (68%), and more than half (56%) wish discussing salaries wasn’t taboo

Are You a Money Whisperer? New Study Reveals 6 in 10 Americans Don’t Talk About Money (BPT) - America, it’s time to have the money talk. According to research by Empower, a financial services company, 62% of people don’t talk about money. Mum’s the word with their family (63%), friends (75%) and even with their spouse/ partner (46%), though millennials and Gen Z are twice as likely to say they’re an “open book” compared to older generations (28% versus 13%). Many people would rather discuss politics (43%) and death (32%) than their finances (24%). It may be costing them their dreams. A majority of people believe more candid “money talks” have the power to change the world: 66% remark that open conversations can help people build generational wealth, improve the gender wage gap (62%) and over half say that money conversations could improve workplace transparency (56%). Carol Waddell, President of Empower Personal Wealth, says, “Conversation is a currency on the pathway to financial security, and open discussions about money can have a truly transformative effect on society. Our study shows people believe that clarity about their financial picture, talking to an advisor and financial education are key to achieving success.”

1. Growing up without money conversations Don’t talk about money: that’s the message half (52%) of Americans hear, learning it’s impolite to talk about finances (26%), and certainly not what you earn (35%). The taboo prevails for nearly twothirds (60%) of people who don’t feel

comfortable on the topic. Americans recall stowing away coins in a piggy bank (41%) but say many practical financial lessons weren’t discussed like the importance of having an emergency fund (31%), building good credit (30%), and managing debt (27%) - as kids or adults. This might explain why Americans tend to clam up when the conversation turns to money. While many received an allowance (36%), the majority (68%) were never taught how to manage a budget. Nearly a quarter of Gen Zers (23%) grew up in a household with a swear jar teaching about money and manners - yet 79% of all people say they never spoke about how much is “needed” to be financially secure. One in 5 (18%) Americans surveyed say they were raised with a YOLO money motto: “You only live once, so don’t worry too much about finances.” Despite the saying, more than a third (37%) say they regularly worry. That’s even higher for Gen Z and millennials (51% and 49%) and women, who are considerably more stressed about their personal finances than men (42% versus 33%). 2. Talking about money at work Figuring out personal finance is intimidating and overwhelming for half of Americans (48%), and when it comes to managing their money, 39% say they don’t know where to start, including 41% of women and 37% of men. Compare that with sky-high confidence managing money at work: 73% feel at ease oversee-

ing company budgets and the majority say they clearly understand their employer’s finances and performance (70%). Reassuringly, people have a strong grasp on employer benefits like the availability of their company’s 401(K) plan (80%) and say they know how their pay raises work (77%). Advocating for themselves is where it gets tricky. One-third (33%) of people don’t feel comfortable asking for an increase. Men feel more comfortable asking for a pay raise than women (74% versus 59%). Better market data on compensation could potentially boost negotiation confidence and nearly half (49%) of survey respondents (and a majority of millennials, 69%, and Gen Z, 71%) believe discussing salaries can lead to better career opportunities. Americans say they avoid uncomfortable money talk at work (68%), and more than half (56%) wish discussing salaries wasn’t taboo. Do you know how much your co-workers make? Just 19% of respondents say they’ve asked. But the workplace isn’t the only area Americans are staying quiet. People haven’t asked their friends (68%) or family (60%) either. Women are less comfortable talking about money with co-workers than men (36% women versus 50% men). That said, people may not be as shy as expected: 58% of millennials and 53% of Gen Z (and 34% of Americans overall), would share their salary information on their LinkedIn. What’s it amount to? According to 62% of respondents, open money conver-

sations could solve the gender wage gap. Americans say greater wage transparency would motivate employees to work harder (50%) and help avoid miscommunications (60%).

retired from his career in Project Management and concentrated on property development. He and his wife, Linda, refurbished several cottages in Southern France and built up a small holiday business before

selling up and returning to rural South Wales. They now reside in a self-built stone cottage along with three cats, a few thousand bees, whom they have not named; and several chickens. Two grown children and one grandchild live nearby.

3. Speak with an expert. More than three-quarters (77%) of Americans want to see society take on more “money talks” about ways to save for the future (41%), money mistakes they’ve made (36%) and basic financial literacy (34%). A quarter want more discussions about how to negotiate (26%) and pay for big expenses (24%). Even more open dialogue about the emotional aspects of money would be helpful for 20% of respondents. Ultimately, people believe more open conversations about money can have a truly transformative effect on society: 66% think it can help more people achieve financial freedom. So, how does America get there? Respondents agree that clarity about their financial picture (40%), talking to an advisor (36%), and financial education (34%) are key to achieving financial success. “In these challenging times, staying tight-lipped about money is something people can no longer afford. As part of our mission to advance financial freedom for all, we’re here to help people speak up and take the next step for a brighter financial future,” says Waddell. If conversation is a currency on the pathway to financial security, it’s time to start speaking up.

“The Execution” Documents Buried For More Than A Century Throw Doubt On Fate Of Condemned Man Patrick O’Donnell survived the seemingly unsurvivable — including the Great Hunger, the aptly nicknamed Coffin Ships and the infamous Typhoid Sheds — on his way to the hangman’s noose in December 1883. Having traveled from Ireland to the United States in search of a better life, Patrick O’Donnell sealed his grim fate when he committed murder, but there is so much more to his life than was ever revealed — until now. In his unforgettable new book, The Execution, Life and Times of Patrick O’Donnell, Author Gavin O’Donnell uses an epistolary technique to reconstruct the story of Patrick’s remarkable life using a series of letters purportedly written by Patrick as he awaited the hangman’s noose — letters smuggled from his death cell in his wife Margaret’s petticoats and that have remained undiscovered for 133 years. “There has always been a belief that we are related to a man named Patrick O’Donnell,” Gavin O’Donnell explained in an interview. “There is some evidence to support this but it’s patchy and not strong.… but it is the reason I took an interest in the man.” Gavin O’Donnell blends real world events, biographical information about Patrick and his own imagination to create a compelling narrative that follows Patrick’s path through the Great Hunger to the Typhoid Sheds of Quebec; from his service in the Confederate Army and capture at Chattanooga in 1863 to the grisly O’Donnell Massacre at Wiggan’s Patch, Pennsylvania; and ultimately to that fateful day off the coast of Port Elizabeth where Patrick put three bullets into James Carey,

and in so doing sealed his own fate and his place in history — but for the wrong reasons. “He was a real person, but how I draw him is how I imagine him to have been as he faced his lifelong challenges and as he sat in his death cell,” Gavin O’Donnell said. Included are accounts of letters of clemency sent to Patrick’s trial and indeed to Queen Victoria herself by Victor Hugo, (the great author but also well-known campaigner against capital punishment), and from U.S. President Chester Arthur. Interventions which hint at an extraordinary life for an Irish peasant. “History tells us that Patrick O’Donnell was hanged in Newgate Prison in December 1883 for the murder of James Carey,” Gavin O’Donnell added. “History, however, tells us almost nothing of his remarkable life. Was he a British agent, hero of Ireland or something else altogether?” About the Author Gavin O’Donnell grew up in Wales, Ireland, North Africa and England. A selective mute until age 5, he was unable to read properly at age 11 and was classified as “Educationally Sub Normal.” He studied Construction Management in Limerick, obtaining a degree, and later, at age 40, by way of distance learning, he obtained a Bachelor Of Law’s Honors Degree at Nottingham. While vacationing in Bordeaux in 1990, he and his wife lost their daughter in a fire, and their son was badly injured. Later diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and PTSD partly as a result of the trauma, he

2024 Will Be Filled With Opportunity Hallandale Beach Can Celebrate A Strong Fiscal Future Ahead By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper

Hope our readers are having a Blessed New Year! In Hallandale Beach the New Year will bring with it many opportunities that will continue to move our City forward and some that will need to be keenly followed. The first reason to celebrate is the strong Fiscal Future ahead of us in 2024. The hard work of our City Commission, City Manager and all of our Department Directors over the past years has paid off. As I have reported in past articles, we have stabilized our Budget with multiple strategies that took the courage of this

It is an Election year for Hallandale Beach City Commission. We have the Mayor Seat and two Commission Seats on the November Ballot. After discussions with my husband and family, I have decided to run for Re-Election. There are still many Projects and Issues that need to be focused on. Knowledge and experience will be critical to keep our City moving in the right direction. I am extremely excited that both Vice Mayor Anabelle Lima Taub and Commissioner Michele Lazarow have decided to seek Re-Election. The environment of collaboration and stability truly make a difference.

“Over the past 6 years, our City has had the most civil Commission in its history. Not only can we get the job done, our working relationships help to retain good management and a great working environment for all employees.” Commission. When the Budget needed to be passed Vice Mayor Lima Taub, Commissioners Lazarow and Adams kept true to our goals. We stood firm and stayed the course on our Five Year Stability Plan. We did not play Politics with our Votes. Due to these actions we are optimistic we can reduce our Tax Rate this year. While this is great news we still need to remain vigilant and watch all the Local, State and Global Trends that may impact this stability. The big issue this year that can change the course of Hallandale Beach and all levels of Government will be Elections. I know it seems like there has been a never-ending cycle of election reporting, but we all need to keep informed. It is a Presidential a year but there are many other Elections taking place on the State and Local Levels.

Over the past 6 years, our City has had the most civil Commission in its history. Not only can we get the job done, our working relationships help to retain good management and a great working environment for all employees. Qualifications are not until June. I encourage every reader to participate in the Local Races. We are the Government closest to the people and knowledge and experience does truly matter. The other trend is Developers who are looking to make Major Investments in our City. We have many Development Projects that are in the final stages of Approval. There are many that are under different Phases Of Construction. This includes some wonderful Affordable Housing Units. We have a Policy that any Developer who wants to build above the Existing Land Use Rights, must include an

Affordable Housing Component. The Commission has all agreed that the Inclusionary Housing Policy is vital where units are built as a mix of units on site. We have Amended our Comprehensive Plan to ensure we have all the resources in place so New Construction will not have an Adverse Fiscal Impact on our City and burden our Taxpayers. Over the next year we will be partnering with all Stakeholders to address the rewriting of our Codes. We are still having issues filling and maintaining positions in our Building Department. This trend is not only impacting our City but others that have been faced with the challenges of New Construction and the Forty-Year and Fifty-Year Safety Inspection Program. In Broward County’s Rules, Governing Inspectors, Plan Reviewers and Building Officials have set up an obstacle that no other county is facing. We are the only county that does not allow individuals to work in their respective licensed fields while working within Building Departments. As an example, I can have my License and Certification to do Plumbing work in the State. In MiamiDade County, I can have my Licenses run my business and also do Plan Reviews and Inspections, however, in Broward County, I cannot. This is even if the Project is located in Miami-Dade or Palm Beach Counties. I do agree that a person should not be reviewing their own Work or Company’s Projects. There is no reason why an individual could not do Reviews and Inspections. We will be going to the Broward County Board of Rules for an Appeal to reverse a dated interpretation from 2014. I look forward to working alongside our Commission and the County Commission

to change the Regulations on the State’s side through a Local Bill. State Legislators are also looking at changing Laws to help access qualified employees. Senator Pizzo is working to establish the ability to make it easier for any Licensed and Certified Contractor/Engineer or Architect to work in the State. To think you can design and build skyscrapers in New York but not do work in Florida is an obsolete concept. With all of the online technology this makes sense. We are on the right course when it comes to our Infrastructure. Many Projects have begun and there are plenty in the pipeline. The Commission just approved a Long-Term Road Resurfacing Contract. Our residents will begin seeing this work on roads not slated for underground work. Our goal will be to make sure we continue to focus on every aspect of implementation. One of the ongoing issues is Vacation Rentals. The State continues to preempt cities for Regulating these types of Rentals. They have been adversely impacting all of our cities and are not limited to simply one area or housing type. If you are aware of a rental that is not registered you can help us by reporting it. A new National Law took effect that does not allow LLC’s to be Registered Owners. This will go a long way to help us Regulate Properties. Not only for Vacation Rentals but for Code Violations as well. The biggest challenge in the coming year will be hiring and retaining qualified employees. The employee market since the COVID-19 Pandemic continues to be extremely competitive. We have taken measures to recruit and more importantly retain good employees. We continued to hire in many departments. I encourage our readers to visit our City’s website at: www.cohb.org - There may be an opportunity for you to work with our organization!

As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place! I am available at: jcooper@cohb.org. Or: joycooper@aol.com.
