Easy Easter Eats One-Pan Dishes To Make Hosting Simple (Family Features) Even if Easter hosting duties fell on your plate this year and added one more thing to your holiday todo list, that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult. After all, Easter is a time meant for fun and fellowship with the food just one part of the celebration. Building the menu around simple, onepan dishes can keep the focus where it needs to be: spending time and creating memories with family and friends. These dishes call for short lists of ingredients, many of which you may already have in your pantry, and simple preparation to create a full spread perfect for sharing with loved ones. Plus, using only one pan makes cleanup a breeze, so you can get back to the festivities quickly. A dish like this Easter Roast lets you check both the main course and side dishes off your list, relying on the oven to do most of the work for you after some quick prep work. Similarly easy to prepare, these Refrigerator Rolls can also be made up to six days in advance and stored in the fridge until ready to bake - a perfect complement to the savory roast and veggies. Finish off your feast with an adaptable dessert like this Blueberry Crumble. Made using just five ingredients and ready in about an hour, you can swap the blueberry pie filling and yellow cake mix for any combination that suits your guests’ tastes like apple pie filling with spice cake or cherry pie filling with chocolate cake; the sky’s the limit when it comes to satisfying that sweet tooth.

A-SECTION Slow Burn From Page 1A Subscriptions to the five-show season are currently on sale with tickets to individual performances going on sale Friday, June 7th. Just in time for Halloween, Slow Burn Theatre opens the season with The Witches of Eastwick October 19th – November 3rd. The original West End production was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Musical and is based on the 1984 novel of the same name by John Updike and the basis for the 1987 film starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. In the tiny New England town of Eastwick, three modern day witches innocently plot and conjure over a heady brew of weak martinis and peanut butter brownies. But when their shared desire for “all manner of man in one man” arrives in the form of charismatic stranger Darryl Van Horne, all hell breaks loose. The musical has book and lyrics by John Dempsey and music by Dana P. Rowe, the creative team behind Zombie Prom and The Fix. The season unwraps Anastasia The Musical during the holidays from December 21st – January 5th with a book by celebrated playwright Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Inspired by beloved films, the musical transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920’s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family. This spectacular musical about discovering who you are and defining who you’re meant to be has a soaring score including the song favorites from the hit animated film, “Journey To The Past” and “Once Upon A December.” Winner of the 1999 Tony Awards for Best Score (Jason Robert Brown, who also wrote the lyrics) and Best Book of a Musical (Alfred Uhry) as well as 2023 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, Parade reminds us around Valentine’s Day from February 8th – February 23rd that to love,

we must truly see one another. The musical follows a newlywed Jewish couple, Leo and Lucille Frank, who are struggling to make a life in the old red hills of Georgia. When Leo is accused of an unspeakable crime, it propels them into an unimaginable test of faith, humanity, justice and devotion. Not content with just one day, Slow Burn Theatre delivers two weeks of April foolishness with Something Rotten! from March 29th – April 13th. Proclaimed “Broadway’s big, fat hit!” by the New York Post and nominated for 10 Tony Awards, this hilarious smash journeys back to 1595 as brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom compete to write a hit play against the popularity of the insufferable superstar Shakespeare. There are roughly one billion surveillance cameras worldwide and that number continues to grow

2024 Is the New 1984 By John & Nisha Whitehead

Forty years past the time that George Orwell envisioned the stomping boot of Big Brother, the police state is about to pass off the baton to the surveillance state. Fueled by a melding of government and corporate power—the rise of the security industrial complex—this watershed moment sounds a death knell for our privacy rights. An unofficial fourth branch of government, the Surveillance State came into being without any electoral mandate or constitutional referendum, and yet it possesses superpowers, above and beyond those of any other government agency save the military. It operates beyond the reach of the president, Congress and the courts, and it marches in lockstep with the corporate elite who really call the shots in Washington, DC. This is the new face of tyranny in America: all-knowing, all-seeing and allpowerful. Tread cautiously. Empowered by advances in surveillance technology and emboldened by rapidly expanding public-private partnerships between law enforcement, the Intelligence Community, and the private sector, the Surveillance State is making the fictional world of 1984, Orwell’s dystopian nightmare, our looming reality. What we are witnessing, in the socalled name of security and efficiency, is the creation of a new class system comprised of the watched (average Americans such as you and me) and the watchers (government bureaucrats, technicians and private corporations). We now find ourselves in the unenviable position of being monitored, managed and controlled by our technology, which answers not to us but to our government and corporate rulers. This is the fact-is-stranger-than-fiction lesson that is being pounded into us on a daily basis.

In this way, 1984, which depicted the ominous rise of ubiquitous technology, fascism and totalitarianism, has become an operation manual for the omnipresent, modern-day surveillance state. There are roughly one billion surveillance cameras worldwide and that number continues to grow, thanks to their wholehearted adoption by governments (especially law enforcement and military agencies), businesses, and individual consumers. Surveillance cameras mounted on utility poles, traffic lights, businesses, and homes. Ring doorbells. GPS devices. Dash cameras. Drones. Store security cameras. Geofencing and geotracking. FitBits. Alexa. Internet-connected devices. Stingray devices, facial recognition technology, body cameras, automated license plate readers, gunshot detection, predictive policing software, AI-enhanced video analytics, real-time crime centers, fusion centers: all of these technologies and surveillance programs rely on publicprivate partnerships that together create a sticky spiderweb from which there is no escape. With every new surveillance device we welcome into our lives, the government gains yet another toehold into our private worlds. What this adds up to for government agencies (that is, FBI, NSA, DHS agents, etc., as well as local police) is a surveillance map that allows them to track someone’s movements over time and space, hopscotching from doorbell camera feeds and business security cameras to public cameras on utility poles, license plate readers, traffic cameras, drones, etc. It has all but eliminated the notion of privacy enshrined in the Fourth Amendment and radically re-drawn the line of demarcation between our public and private selves. The police state has become particularly adept at sidestepping the Fourth Amendment, empowered by advances in surveillance technology and emboldened

by rapidly expanding public-private partnerships between law enforcement, the Intelligence Community, and the private sector. Over the past 50-plus years, surveillance has brought about a series of revolutions in how governments govern and populations are policed to the detriment of us all. Cybersecurity expert Adam Scott Wandt has identified three such revolutions. The first surveillance revolution came about as a result of government video cameras being installed in public areas. It’s estimated that Americans are caught on camera an average of 238 times every week (160 times per week while driving; 40 times per week at work; 24 times per week while out running errands and shopping; and 14 times per week through various other channels and activities). That doesn’t even touch on the coverage by surveillance drones, which remain a relatively covert part of police spying operations. The second revolution occurred when law enforcement agencies started forging public-private partnerships with commercial establishments like banks and drug stores and parking lots in order to gain access to their live surveillance feeds. The use of automatic license plate readers extends the reach of the surveillance state that much further afield. The third revolution was ushered in with the growing popularity of doorbell cameras such as Ring, Amazon’s video surveillance doorbell, and Google’s Nest Cam. No longer do police even have to request permission of homeowners for such access: increasingly, corporations have given police access to footage as part of their so-called criminal investigations with or without court orders. The fourth revolutionary shift may well be the use of facial recognition software and artificial intelligence-powered programs that can track people by their biometrics, clothing, behavior and car, thereby synthesizing the many strands of

surveillance video footage into one cohesive narrative, which privacy advocates refer to as 360 degree surveillance. While the guarantee of safety afforded by these surveillance nerve centers remains dubious, at best, there is no disguising their contribution in effecting a sea change towards outright authoritarianism. These cameras—and the public-private eyes peering at us through them—are reengineering a society structured around the aesthetic of fear and, in the process, empowering “people to not just watch their neighborhood, but to organize as watchers,” creating not just digital neighborhood watches but digital gated communities. Finally, there is a repressive, suppressive effect to surveillance that not only acts as a potentially small deterrent on crime but serves to monitor and chill lawful First Amendment activity. As Matthew Feeney warns in the New York Times, “In the past, Communists, civil rights leaders, feminists, Quakers, folk singers, war protesters and others have been on the receiving end of law enforcement surveillance. No one knows who the next target will be.” No one knows, but it’s a pretty good bet that the surveillance state will be keeping a close watch on anyone seen as a threat to the government’s chokehold on power. After all, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the Surveillance State never sleeps. We did a full evaluation of every board, their goals and objectives and now we are rebuilding membership on the new boards. Volunteer Boards in cities are a way for city leaders to collaborate with residents on issues and ideas to make their cities better. There are also boards that are required by State Law. Typically, boards require that individuals be a resident of the City. Some require a level of expertise to serve. At one time we had over 18 different boards and committees. We had boards that were created for specific issues. These boards were intended to serve a purpose but had a

very narrow focus and this limited their work. Each board or committee has a Staff Liaison. Staff time is valuable and taking staff from their daily duties on a monthly basis without a rational nexus to the goals and objectives of our City is not smart utilization of taxpayer dollars. It is also inconsiderate to volunteers that show up, donate their available time and find no quorum to address issues and move ideas forward. After evaluating the 18 boards we combined many of the single task boards into three boards with a combined mission and focus. The other statutory boards remained, as they are required by State Law and include: Police and Fire Pension Board, Civil Service Board, Unsafe Structure Board and Charter Review Board. These boards have specific membership requirements and expertise. We have two advisory boards that are required as part of our Safe Neighborhoods. These SND Boards are set up with members that must live in the districts located at Three Islands and the Golden Isles Area, South of Egret Drive. They are appointed by a vote of the Board of Directors which is the Commission. The Planning and Zoning Board is composed of 5 members and appointments at large. This board has one

The Parks and Recreation Board has been redefined to address not just our Parks but Historical Preservation, Beaches and Beautification. This board has 10 members and currently has 6 vacancies. This board also has a nonvoting member that is defined to be filled by someone that will work with ADA Compliance and Accessibility and has personal experience with Accessible Utilization. The Public Transportation, Traffic and Parking Advisory Board also was one of the combined boards. This board is also a 5-member board and has vacancies that need to be filled. They Treat All ‘Types’ Of Cancer When they distinguish between ‘types’ of cancer, they are referring to the location in which the cancer is being manifested... breast cancer... lung cancer...brain cancer. In each of these, the second word is ‘cancer’ and the first word is the location. The reason that one cancer may be considered more aggressive is due to location. Pancreatic cancer, for instance, only has to grow 1cm to be in another organ like the small intestines, making it stage 4 and impacting the function of the small intestines. Breast or colon cancer, on the other hand, may grow several centimeters without impacting another organ. ‘Types’ of cancer usually refers to whether it is a sarcoma or a carcinoma because the embryonic origins of those two types of cancer are different. Still, the same process that defines it as ‘cancer’ is occurring. Categories of Cancer There are three general categories of Cancer, these are distinguished by the tissue subtype where they began. Sarcomas include malignancies originating in Mesenchymal tissue, which is derived from a type of embryonic tissue. In contrast, carcinomas originate in epithelial tissues, as described above. Sarcomas include malignancies of the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, and blood vessels. Leukemias originate in the bone marrow. Although bone marrow (hema-

topoietic tissue) is of mesenchymal origin, and leukemias should be classified as sarcomas, they are usually classified separately from sarcomas. Lymphomas and myelomas are malignancies originating in immune system cells. Lymphomas begin in lymph nodes and myelomas begin in a certain subset of immune cells called plasma cells. And the

almost arbitrary distinction between Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas has succeeded only in obfuscating the unbiased investigation of these conditions and how best to “treat” them. There are many subtypes of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas that have no apparent commonalities other than consisting of lymphoid tissue and not meeting the criteria for a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. For more information about their cancer treatments, visit their website: https:// www.anoasisofhealing.com/ or find their book on Amazon: https://a.co/d/26ttjuj
