Over 50 years of vision problems corrected in minutes As he thinks back to the first time he recalled having problems with his vision, Raymond Poirier has to laugh for a minute. "I was a defiant, young kid who really didn't want to wear glasses," Poirier said. "But I guess every child has that certain vanity." While vision problems have plagued him for much of his life, other unfortunate circumstances have also surrounded Poirier's lengthy career as a construction worker. Within the struggle to see - with eye covering protecting him - a severe accident broke both of his legs and truly had Poirier scrambling to just live each day. "Pain was crazy, but the fact that I now had vision problems and two bad legs, compounded the craziness," Poirier said. "It was like a curse or something." While being dependent on pain relief medicine, Poirier decided to head to south Florida to spend time with a mother who had been ill. Medical marijuana is once again grabbing the political spotlight 1st Priority Restoration By Larry Blustein Can the decision over medical marijuana in the state of Florida be enough to actually carry a political candidate to victory? That is a question that has been burning in every corner of the state since the momentum to put this important, and in some cases, lifechanging decision, into motion. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. 1st Priority From Pge 1A ––––––––––––––––––––– can spread to big damage, it's 1st Priority's job to eliminate it. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. IT'S BETTER TO HIRE 1ST PRIORITY It doesn’t take much time for a water leak to do extensive damage to your home or business. In fact, it can happen just hours after the leak occurs. 1st Priority a licensed building contractor for mold remediation and mold assessment has 10 years experience in the industry. They can use that experience to find the leak and fix it quickly, using the latest. state-of-the-art technology. Its noninvasive, infrared thermal imaging equipment can detect the precise location of the leak within a wall or up to 12 feet underground, greatly minimizing the area of wall or floor that needs to be removed. When the leak is fixed, technicians will fully restore the area to its original condition using all new materials. To save the home and business owner time and money, 1st Priority will work directly with your insurance company. Its professional staff will identify and assess both visible and hidden damage, submit all bills, and take care of any negotiations. There is no outof-pocket cost for the home or business owner. This helps you to avoid headaches now as well as in the future. The insurance company adjuster wants the best outcome for the insurance company, and may not actively seek out unseen damage that is behind walls or under floors. 1st Priority, however, advocates for

the homeowner, and its technicians will use their skills and experience to identify even the hidden damage that may cause problems in the future if it is not fixed. HOW DO LEAKS HAPPEN? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. IS MOLD MAKING YOUR HOME TOXIC? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. WHAT IS MOLD? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is

vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. GOODBYE, MOLD Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition with new materials. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1st PRIORITY RESTORATION: They Will Take care of The Problem From A to Z 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, sanitize it and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. The company provides start-to-finish, 24-hour service 365 days a year for repairing water, fire and smoke or wind damage, leak detection and repair, and ozone treatment. Technicians follow through with debris clean-up, manipulation and packing, storage, cleaning and sanitizing, using the latest technology to restore your property and belongings to its pre-loss condition. To save you time, 1st Priority can work directly with your insurance company. 1st Priority Restoration provides the fast action and thorough service that are the most important factors

Hallandale Beach CRA creates a mini grant program to help you spruce up your business By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - If you own a local business, the CRA has just created a mini grant program to help you spruce it up or address ADA compliancy. Back in October the CRA Board of Directors dissected the CRA policy manual during our monthly meeting. Over two hours we address recommended changes to streamline the programs offered to businesses and residents. All program were wrapped into Business Incentive Program (BIP) and Neighborhood Invective Program (NIP). We also have a robust affordable Housing Program, that was changed on Tuesday and a separate CRA wide mini grant was created. The BIP has been in existence for years. We have had many businesses apply over those years. The goal is to upgrade properties in the CRA, preserve businesses during the economic down turn and create jobs. As the years passed the board made amendments to illegibility and the implementation. There had been a policy that the loans could be up to 50% forgivable up front depending on what the proposed of the loan was for and

the type of business and the jobs created or preserved. During the workshop we established a policy manual that would make the programs clearer and the terms understandable. BIP is now easier if you lease your business. Loans are set from 0% - 3% and available for lessees up to 50,000 and 200,000 to landlords. They are also 100% percent forgivable based on the number of jobs created at 10,000 per job. In the event the jobs are not retained for five years the formula is adjusted. Business owners that lease can secure the loan through a personal guarantee. Understanding that many small or new businesses on Fashion Row were not able or willing to be obligated for a large loan a façade grant for 10,000 dollars was created for the District. This program helped expedite upgrades to the area. In order to save this program it was added back. During the debate of programs staff interpreted our comments to limit the grant to only three targeted areas, Hallandale Beach Boulevard west of Dixie, FEC Corridors and Foster Road. This was not our intention. On Tuesday we expanding the grant to all

properties. I also requested that the mini grant be made available for ADA improvements up to 20,000 per property. All loans and the mini grant are based on a first come first serve basis for funds budgeted during the fiscal year. When funds becomes limited awards will be based on the merits of the loan application. The merits will take into consideration the location of the properties within CRA targeted areas and the type of projects. NIP includes forgivable loans to address code compliance issues, aesthetic improvements and other life safety issues. The program is very flexible depending on the work that needs to be performed to address the owner’s needs. Up to 30,000 dollars is available for single family homes and multifamily up 4 units. Multifamily properties with 5 or more units are illegible for up to 50,000. The loan forgiveness and illegibility is based income levels. Participation is for owners that we have also added sea wall repair to address embankment issues that are occurring along the drainage areas and lakes. All properties must

be within the CRA boundaries. These boundaries include all properties west of 14th Avenue. The city will still be providing shutter assistances our side of the CRA. Red Light Cameras were voted to be removed in our city at a recent commission meeting with the caveat it is within the contract terms to do so. This item was brought up without any back up or evaluation of facts and with the assumption it could happen within 30 days. After the surprise action our city attorney reviewed the terms of the contract and found that the removal before December would cost taxpayers $150,000plus. Many people are not familiar with the fact our contract is unique since it was set up way before the state authorized the use of cameras. We did not pay for camera infrastructure up front and costs to implement the program would be paid thru revenues at a guaranteed return. While it does not cost us money the cost of installation of cameras was leveed thru the contract. These costs have not been paid out yet. Two of the commissioners were upset that it was not happening overnight. One

went as far as saying just pay the money. Everyone knows I was the lone no vote against having them removed. The cameras have worked. They have changed behaviors. To totally remove a program that has worked does not make any sense. This even seems to be the opinion of even the skeptics. In our city 80 % of the tickets written are to people outside of our city that rush through our streets and have broken the law. They have not stopped at a red light. The other 20% is for those resident that do not abide by the traffic laws and are pretty upset they have to pay for their mistake. The other fact is the commission has used money from the tickets. They have also discussed paying for body cameras with the $300,000 dollars that is in escrow waiting for the results from the appeal process. If the commission wants to pursue the removal be-

fore December staff will need to take money out of reserves or another account to pay for this action. I asked that a motion be made to reconsider so we can have all the facts and information on this matter. This did not happen and I could not make it myself since I am in the minority vote. Please join me and the Chamber of Commerce for my Annual State of the City Address this coming Thursday February 24th at The Hallandale Beach Community Cultural Center. The event is free to the public with lunch being served for $25. My speech typically starts around 12:15. Over 50 years of vision problems - corrected in minutes Braverman From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– there were so many negatives surrounding his life, the trip to take care of his mother turned out to be - a life changer. While battling through contacts and miracle cures for his need to wear glasses for distance and near, Poirier headed to the world-famous Bascom Palmer Institute in Miami - where plenty of answers came his way, but the results fell short. "They told me that if I got a special contact lens, my vision would be good," Poirier recalled. "It wasn't and I was a huge mess." This was the Monovision option, one eye for distance, one eye for near. Still searching for the answers to correcting his vision, it was his turn to finally get some positive news in his life when Poirier, who took his mother for a visit to Dr. Stanley Braverman in Hallandale Beach, read an article on the wall inside the office. "I remember reading that story about Laser Vision Correction" Poirier said. "It was the best decision ever. From the moment I met Dr. Braverman, I was blown away with how much he knew exactly what I was experiencing." When Dr. Braverman explained the procedure, Poirier was sold. He was ready to finally make that decision - even with all he had been through physically and emotionally. "It was a Tuesday, and kidding with Dr. Braverman about when we could do this procedure, I said what about tomorrow," Poirier recalled. "Without hesitation, he turned to me and said what about Thursday! Now, that was something that really surprised me." Anxious for the surgery to take place, Poirier set up the exact time his mother would drop him off and pick him, giving a block of time for the PresbyLasik procedure to be performed. As the procedure started at 10:30, a few clicks later and a world was changed. The eyesight that had failed him for much of his life had been corrected. The avid hunter and fisherman, who had been restricted with fogging-eye protectors and other things that truly prevented him from fully enjoying his life, had finally noticed a change - and it was quick. "When Dr. Braverman left the room for a moment, I kind of looked to my right and left and was really blown away," Poirier explained. "It was like a feeling that something had happened in such a positive way to make my life better." While his vision luck has turned out to be a blessing, Poirier still can't avoid the injury bug. During a recent trip with hunting and fishing friends in Maine, he slipped on a wet rock and broke his shoulder. Although he quickly kicked the pain pills that became essential after the accident, he told Dr. Braverman that it was indeed all his fault. "I wanted to assure him that I saw that rock perfectly," Poirier laughed. "I could not be more satisfied with the outcome." NEAR-FAR MULTIFOCAL PRESBYLASIK: Correction for two kinds of vision problems New procedure can correct both Distance and Near Vision Dr. Braverman started doing the PresbyLasik procedure over two years ago. It was introduced into the United States approximately six years ago, having originally been done using the Allegretto Wavelight femtosecond laser by an Italian Eye Surgeon, Dr. Roberto Pinelli. This is the same Laser that Dr. Braverman uses. Dr. Braverman said “this technique was developed by taking what Eye Surgeons already knew about how Lasik changes the shape of the front of the eye to eliminate glasses, and just modifying the techniques to be able to reduce or eliminate the need for distance glasses, as well as reading glasses." WHAT TO EXPECT WITH Z-LASIK SURGERY All Laser Lasik surgery is performed on a patient’s cornea, which provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back

The Braverman Eye Center is located at: 1935 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009.

into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea. Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision. This means that they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play most sports, and watch TV. Also, you can participate in careers requiring good unaided vision, such as policemen or firemen need. ABOUT DR. STANLEY BRAVERMAN Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital/Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is also an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Nova Southeastern School of Optometry. In addition to treating patients, Dr. Braverman, a board-certified ophthalmologist, has been a medical researcher, and is the inventor of several eye surgical instruments, and author of many articles for medical journals. The court's 4-3 decision on that vote last month means the proposed amendment to the state constitution will go on the state's Nov. 4 general election ballot. A few weeks back, the initiative crossed its other hurdle — getting more than 683,000 validated

signatures on petitions. "The decision to put it up for a vote at least signals that people are willing to listen to what adults have been talking about," said Glaucoma patient and Hollywood resident Claire O'Neil. "To me, it comes down to understanding that this is NOT recreation and really about what takes to make someone comfortable during medical treatment." Many like O'Neil understand the "old guard's" stance on pot and other drugs that are illegal. She compre-

hends that the negativity that has always surrounded marijuana often clouding the decision - should be made on what this does from a medical standpoint and not the way it has been portrayed through the years. While having a marijuana store on every corner is appealing to some, many patients who have been grasping at "feel better" straws for so long, is something that works. Something grown naturally that will make them eat when they

simply cannot - without using more harmful narcotics to add to their problems. "The thing that many do not understand is that - while they have not proven how effective marijuana can really be in medical treatment, there is that other view," O'Neil explained. "I can fully see both sides, but for someone who has really noticed a difference in my vision and the way I approach life, I have to fight for this." Fighting to get medical marijuana is a whole different ball-

ABOUT BEAUSOLEIL AVEC MICHAEL DOUCET For the past 37 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, Zydeco, country and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz Heritage Festival in New Orleans, to Carnegie Hall, than all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England. Since becoming the first Cajun band to win a GRAMMY with L’amour Ou La Folie (Traditional Folk Album1998) and then a second Grammy in 2010, Live at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, BeauSoleil has garnered many accolades, including twelve GRAMMY nominations. They are regular guests on Garrison Keillor’s National Public Radio show A Prairie Home Companion, where Keillor has dubbed them as “the best Cajun band in the world,” and their music is so integral to the Cajun culture that they have been featured on the New Orleans-based hit HBO program Treme. As noted by The Boston Globe, “the remarkable thing about Cajun revivalists BeauSoleil is that they are still inviting us to ask what’s new. BeauSoleil isn’t neo-anything. This ensemble finds freshness not by infusing vintage styles with contemporary sonics, but with vibrant, thoughtful fusions.” CAJUN CUISINE When one thinks of New Orleans, food comes to mind immediately. It is simply about health and using the herb as a form of treatment and not as a daily cocktail to get a buzz and enjoy. "Remember, this is Florida," Evan Cohen of Aventura said. "All you have to do is make a call and you will have anything you want within an hour; so what this is really about, is those who need marijuana for actual medicinal usage and do not need to sneak around and make those calls and believe they are doing something wrong at a time when relief is what they are after." North Miami Beach cancer patient Aurora Martinez is one of those who believes that medical marijuana provides relief during though times. Adult decisions being made by adults. It comes down to getting that old guard of Florida residents to understand that advances in medicine go beyond what CVS and Walgreens have to offer. "The way I look at any disease is, there has to be an understanding of that disease," Martinez explained. "I mean, if you are going through something and nobody else can feel what you feel, you have to convey to them that smoking marijuana does me good. It is not harming you, the average citi-

zen who does not care. What it does to bring my quality of life up several notches - is what this is all about." While many across the state believe that what happens in this vote will NOT determine the Charlie CristRick Scott race, there are many who also feel that paying any attention to it will be a huge boost - especially while both candidates will be out in force and will be asked about this over and over again. "No question will be it an issue," said O'Neil. "How can you can get over a quarter of a million signatures on something and this NOT being an issue?” Some political experts believe — though others dispute it — that having the marijuana initiative on the ballot will draw out voters favorable to Crist. Crist has issued a one-sentence statement: “This is an issue of compassion, trusting doctors, and trusting the people of Florida. I will vote for it.” Former state Sen. Nan Rich, competing with Crist for the Democratic nomination, also supports the measure. How do most feel in our area? With the location of where we are, you would think that there would be more compassion and thinking when it comes to passing this. But maybe it's not this region that is holding up progress for so many. • Twitter@sfsuntimes • • Thursday, February 20, 2014 Page 9A

Hollywood Expo Alfresco coming to ArtsPark April 9th

Expo Alfresco offers area businesses an opportunity to showcase their products and services.

HOLLYWOOD - For almost two decades, the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has brought Hollywood Expo Alfresco – the Ultimate Food, Wine and Tradeshow Experience – to the streets of downtown each spring. What began as a cozy little street fair has since blossomed into an extravaganza that now showcases more than 100 booths representing South Florida’s finest eateries and businesses. And while the inaugural event drew several hundred attendees, it now brings ten-fold that amount of visitors! Hollywood’s 19th Annual Expo Alfresco will come to ArtsPark at Young Circle (Hollywood

Boulevard and Federal Highway) on Wednesday, April 9th from 5 to 8 p.m. “What makes Expo Alfresco so unique,” explains Chamber Executive Director and CEO Anne Hotte, “is that we provide a one-stopshop where our eventgoers have the opportunity to meet local business owners, sample signature dishes from participating restaurants and taste selected wines from around the world. Combine that with an exciting entertainment lineup and activities for the kids, and you’ve got a great all-around evening in beautiful downtown Hollywood.” “Hollywood Expo Alfresco is a great experience as a business

owner. Not only did we get great exposure, but we also added many new customers. We gave coupons for our spa with the Expo Alfresco logo on the back and had at least 25 new clients redeem them,” said owners Maribel Ruiz and Luis Guevara of Beauty of Wax an. “We definitely will be part of the event this year and in the years to come,” added Luis, who is also the new president of the Downtown Business Association. Local firehouses will once again compete for the coveted “Firehouse Cook-Off Showdown Cup” at Expo Alfresco and Muzart Creative Arts Studios will host their popular Kidz Korner complete with arts and

crafts and fun and games for the younger generation. New additions to this year’s event include an art fair and a golf clinic presented by McCumber Golf Academy. Sponsors of this year’s event include the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, WastePro, Billy’s Stone Crab Restaurant and Market, Bravo Supermarket,

ArtsPark at Young Circle, Hollywood Discount Liquor & Wine, The Pressroom and Muzart Creative Art Studios. If you’re looking for an effective way to network your business and grow your market, Hollywood Expo Alfresco is the event for you. Don't miss the opportunity to join our tradeshow and tap into this diverse crowd of

over 3,000 participants. Sponsorship and display opportunities are available. Tickets for Hollywood Expo Alfresco are only $20 and children under 10 are free! To reserve your booth or purchase tickets, visit our website or call 954 9234000.

Partner with Police to Prevent Crime By Tracey Thomas Crime Prevention Specialist HOLLYWOOD - The City of Hollywood Police Department reminds residents and visitors to take extra care and awareness in helping to prevent vehicle burglaries. “If it is not left in the car, no one can take it.” There are actual reports from residents and visitors in reference to all different types of items being taken from their vehicles. It is so very important for residents to remember to remove valuable items from their vehicle and to secure their vehicles. Please be alert and assist the Hollywood Police Department in its efforts to deter, reduce and stop crime. Police Officers spend hours throughout their patrol shifts responding to residents and visitors who report that their iphones, ipads, cellphones, laptops, wallets, purses, change, sunglasses, cash, video games, bookbags and many other items have been stolen from their vehicle. Unfortunately, most of these vehicles are left unlocked. These types of crimes can drastically be reduced if everyone will do their part and make the effort to remember to remove their valuables from the car and secure their car. This concept may sound simple, but unfortunately all too often motorists are not taking these crime prevention steps. Everyone has a part to play in reducing crime. Be aware and be educated on “Crime Prevention Measures.” Crime Prevention includes Home Security, Personal Safety and as emphasized, Vehicle Burglary Prevention. Police often refer to the “Crime Prevention Triangle.” The three elements needed to commit a crime are: • Desire

• Ability • Opportunity By taking away any one of these three elements—desire, ability or opportunity—a crime CANNOT occur. Items left in an unattended vehicle definitely give the “opportunity” to allow any individual to commit a crime. So if an individual sets out with the “desire” to commit a crime, and has the tools to enhance their “ability,” a crime is likely to occur. One way to stop the “opportunity” is to remove the valuable items. Ways to Prevent the “Opportunity” • Researching, practicing and installing Home Security measures and practices. • Practicing “Personal Safety Measures” at home and when out. • Remove valuables and items from your vehicle. • Secure your residence and vehicle The following are some Crime Prevention Practices and Measures that everyone should make a part of their routine: • Keep your car doors locked & windows closed. • Don’t leave valuables in vehicle; if you leave valuables in plain sight, the chances your vehicle will get broken into, increases greatly. This creates temptation for thieves. • Place items out of sight BEFORE reaching your destination. Someone may be watching when you put valuables under the seat or in the trunk and the moment you’re gone, a thief could break in car. • Never leave your purse unattended in your vehicle, even when pumping gas. • Avoid leaving packages or shopping bags visible in car. Lock them in the trunk, if leav-

ing vehicle unattended. • Never open a trunk, fill it full of valuables, close it and then just walk away. • If you can’t take valuables with you, secure them in a safe place in your vehicle, like a locked glove compartment or your trunk. • Avoid parking in dark, isolated areas. Park in busy, well lit areas. Pick a spot where

there is a lot of activity. • Alarms or anti-theft devices work. Thieves usually look for easy targets and if you have an alarm, it acts as a deterrent. Avoid Joint Replacement Surgery with the MAP PEMF Therapy - recommended by Dr. Oz "Dr. OZ does not endorse and Dr. OZ is not affiliated with Joint and Muscle Treatment Center or any of our products. PEMF technology was a topic on one of DR. OZ TV shows. We are simply letting you know facts that Dr. Oz stated about PEMF Treatment on his program."

Chronic pain is debilitating, and quickly erodes quality of life. Now, a new medical technology allows many patients suffering from back or joint pain to avoid surgery and return to the activities and lifestyles they enjoyed previously. Map PEMF Therapy is a painless noninvasive method of delivering a pioneering new branch of an invisible treatment that provides a revolutionary cure you were waiting for. A rapid acceleration which recovers and restores a pain-free lifestyle. The treatment works on all joint problems, tears, sprains, fractures and repetitive injuries such as carpel tunnel, arthritis, and osteoarthritis. What’s truly amazing about MAP PEMF Therapy is that it actually regrows cartilage as well as increases bone density. It has been used by thousands of people, including many professional ath-

letes. MAP PEMF Therapy can help patients avoid hip and knee replacements and provide rapid alternative recovery methods. It is now available at the Joint and Muscle Treatement Center in Hallandale Beach. HOW IT WORKS If you have ever held two

magnets in your hands, tried to force them together, and felt a resistance between them, then you have experienced a magnetic field. PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields, which are widely used these days to improve circulation and cell metabolism. The body can become accustomed to nonmoving (or

static) magnetic fields, which are generally unable to deeply penetrate the body. A pulsed electromagnetic field, however, is quite dynamic, is able to penetrate all the way through the body, and creates a cascade of effects within the body. The MAP PEMF Therapy uses moving magnets creating an energy wave which changes the way your body copes with pain. The electrical magnets affect the nerve cells which are electrical cells and the magnetic fields affect how the nerves fire and quiet them down without using drugs increasing circulation in the area and aid the healing. Inside the MAP there are electrical coils, and when electricity passes through there it creates a magnetic field that moves through the body whispering at 75 trillion cells in your body going deep into your body where sports creams and heating pads

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy, PEMF. How does it work?

All living cells within the body possess potentials between the inner and outer membrane of the cell, which, under normal healthy circumstances, are fixed. Different cells, e.g. Muscle cells and Nerve cells, have different potentials of about -70 mV respectively. When cells are damaged, these potentials change such that the balance across the membrane changes, causing the attraction of positive sodium ions into the cell and negative trace elements and proteins out of the cell. The net result is that liquid is attracted into the interstitial area and swelling or edema ensues. The application of pulsed magnetic fields has, through research findings, been shown to help the body to restore normal potentials at an accelerated rate, thus aiding the healing of most wounds and reducing swelling faster. The most effective frequencies found by researchers so far, are very low frequency pulses of a 50Hz base. These, if gradually increased to 25 pulses per second for time periods of 600 seconds (10 minutes), condition the damaged tissue to aid the natural healing process. Pain reduction is another area in which pulsed electromagnetic therapy has been shown to be very effective. Pain signals are transmitted along nerve cells to pre-synaptic terminals. At these terminals, channels in the cell alter due to a movement of ions. The membrane potential changes, causing the release of a chemical transmitter from a synaptic vesicle contained within the membrane. The pain signal is chemically transferred across the synaptic gap to chemical receptors on the post-synaptic nerve cell. This all happens in about 1/2000th of a second, as the synaptic gap is only 20 to 50 nm wide. As the pain signal, in chemical form, approaches the post-synaptic cell, the membrane changes and the signal is transferred. If we look at the voltages across the synaptic membrane then, under no pain conditions, the level is about 70 mV. When the pain signal approaches, the membrane potential increases to approximately +30 mV, allowing a sodium flow. This in turn triggers the synaptic vesicle to release the chemical transmitter and so transfer the pain signal across the synaptic gap or cleft. After the transmission, the voltage reduces back to its normal quiescent level until the next pain signal arrives. The application of pulsed magnetism to painful sites causes the membrane to be lowered to a hyper-polarization level of

about -90 mV. When a pain signal is detected, the voltage must now be raised to a relatively higher level in order to fire the synaptic vesicles. Since the average change of potential required to reach the trigger voltage of nearly +30 mV is +100 mV, the required change is too great and only +10 mV is attained. This voltage is generally too low to cause the synaptic vesicle to release the chemical transmitter and hence the pain signal is blocked. The most effective frequencies that have been observed from research in order to cause the above changes to membrane potentials, are a base frequency of around 100Hz and pulse rate settings of between 5 and 25Hz.

Herbal remedies for stress and/or anxiety Many stress and anxiety symptoms are similar: Tension, emotional instability, loss of focus, heart palpitations and breathing problems… Simply removing the stressful situation or circumstances, leaving them behind, or just doing something to correct the condition allows one to return to a more relaxed sense of being. Anxiety disorder includes a nagging dread of an unknown future, general phobias, or post traumatic stress despite even apparently pleasant current circumstances. In today's upside down world, this is understandable. Continual stress or anxiety builds up cortisone, which leads to a hormonal imbalance that results in serious health issues or chronic fatigue from depleted adrenals. Handling stress better or overcoming anxiety through exercise and/or meditation are becoming more popular. There are better choices, all natural and mostly without side effects. Keep in mind that the effects from herbal remedies, though effective, are not always as immediate as pharmaceutical medicines. St. John's Wort is perhaps the most well known herbal remedy for anxiety or stress. It's been around for centuries and was widely used during the Renaissance and Victorian periods to relieve mental conditions. Passion flower is a recognized, powerful nervous system relaxant. It's popular in the UK, and Germany's Commission E has approved it for nervous conditions, sleep disorders, and anxiety. It also contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Holy Basil is another herb with a wide range of powerful health benefits that include relieving stress and anxiety. The monicker Holy Basil was coined by Ayurveda practitioners at least 5,000 years ago. It is an adaptogenic herb, meaning it helps relieve what needs attention and is able to handle many stressors. It confers a State of Non-specific Increased Resistance (SNIR) that helps the body resist stress. Licorice Root helps the body handle stressful situations, normalize blood sugar levels, and boost your adrenal glands. It is also thought to stimulate cranial and cerebospinal fluid to help calm the mind. Valerian root, chamomile, and lemon balm teas are often used to help calm restlessness and resolve insomnia. They also have mild anxiety or stress reducing qualities and are very relaxing. They can be used with any of these other herbs listed if there is still a problem getting a good night's sleep. Think Teeth! Help Your Children Reduce the Risk of Tooth Decay

(NewsUSA) - Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in the United States? The good news is it can be prevented. This year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) wants to remind parents to "think teeth." Parents can help children combat cavities and tooth decay by practicing good daily oral hygiene -- even at an early age. Ask your pediatrician about your baby's oral health at the six-month checkup. And start regular dental check-ups beginning at age one. Reducing Risk of Tooth Decay "Children's access to dental services is es-

sential to maintaining good oral health and reducing the risk of tooth decay," says Dr. Lynn D. Mouden, Chief Dental Officer with HHS' Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal government agency that oversees Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). "If children don't already have dental coverage, they may be eligible for Medicaid or CHIP, which includes teeth cleanings, checkups, x-rays, fluoride, dental sealants and fillings." Tooth decay is caused by bacteria interacting with sugars in the mouth. The bacteria can be passed from parent to child when,

is a baby," says Dr. Mouden. "Put only water, milk or formula in bottles or sippy cups, and never put babies to bed with a bottle. And as your child gets older, limit sugary foods and drinks and make sure he or she brushes twice a day for two minutes using fluoride toothpaste."

for example, they share spoons or cups. If untreated, this dental disease can result in difficulty eating and speaking, and can interfere with physical and social development and school performance. Tooth decay can be prevented. Using a fluoride var-

nish, fluoride painted on the teeth, protects "baby" teeth. Dental sealants, plastic coatings that keep bacteria and sugars away from areas most likely to decay, protect back teeth. "Simple steps to help prevent tooth decay can begin when a child

Clearing The Air About the Air In Your Home (NewsUSA) - It's been said that, "Home is where the heart is." While this sentiment may be true, that home could also be making you sick. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans spend on average about 90 percent or more of their time indoors, where pollutant levels may be two to five times (and possibly more than 100 times) as high as the levels outdoors. "Most of us don't think about it, because we cannot see the pollution, and sometimes we can't smell it," says a representative for the American Lung Association in Orange County, Calif. Which is why, say experts, keeping your indoor air clean is paramount to maintaining a healthy household. Whether old or new, every home has its potential pollutants, says the EPA. For instance, homes built before 1978 are more likely to contain lead-based paint and have been built with asbestos insulation. In newer, "greener" homes, the use of energy efficiency makes homes airtight, but also effectively traps in pollutants, causing headaches, nausea and exacerbating allergies. So, what's a homeowner to do? Other than dusting and vacuuming on a regular basis, and changing your air filters quarterly, you might want to consider using technology to help clean up your inside air, such as the Air Scrubber Plus air purifier system. This device -- installed into existing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems -uses ActivePure technology to reduce contaminants by up to 99 percent in the air and surfaces of the home. ActivePure is a variation of the technology used by NASA for the International Space Station and is recognized as the exclusive Certified Space Technology by the Space Foundation in its category. "There are a high percentage of people with asthma and allergies around the country," said Tom Lozano, executive director of Air Scrubber Plus. "In-depth testing proves that [our technology] can reduce chemical odors, cigarette smoke, dust, pollen and mold." By using devices such as Air Scrubber Plus, in conjunction with other clean air solutions, you can be assured that the air you're breathing is fresh and clear. "As people grow more concerned about indoor air quality, we are seeing increased demand for indoor air purification solutions from homeowners all over the country," says Lozano. Rice is nice: Five fun things you didn't know about this great grain (BPT) - You've had it fried, boiled and "puddinged." You've savored it in many varieties, including long-grain brown and white. So you think you know rice? Think again when it comes to a versatile, nutritionally valuable complex carbohydrate, rice is a stand-out in the world of great grains. "Rice is a staple of life for half the world's population," says Anne Banville, a vice president for the USA Rice Federation. "Around the world, families consume rice daily as an important energy-providing ingredient of their diet. In the U.S., it's been a pantry staple for side and main dishes for generations, and each year in September we celebrate the harvest of more than 20 billion pounds of U.S.-grown rice during National Rice Month." You may think you know everything there is to know about this widely used grain, but here are a few surprising and fun facts you may not have heard: 1. It's the most versatile grain. Sure you can do a lot with other grains, but when it comes to versatil-

calories from fat and saturated fat, according to a Tufts University study. Plus, for people with gluten intolerance, rice is a great grain choice because it is naturally gluten free. 3. You may already know that rice is a complex carbohydrate that helps boost mental and muscular function. But did you know that rice delivers more than 15 essential nutrients, including B-vitamins, iron, zinc and folic acid? 4. Cutting back on fat and calories? Rice is naturally low in fat. What little fat it does contain is the "good" kind - not the trans fats or saturated fats associated with elevated cholesterol. What's more, rice is great for calorie counting and portion control; a one-cup, single serving has just 100 calories. 5. Rice can make you happier - really! Eating something delicious can make you happy, but carbohydrates like rice also trigger production of serotonin in your brain, according to MIT research. The hormone is known to boost mood and help re-

ity and ease of use, rice is tops. Time-honored products like Minute(R) Rice and Success(R) Rice make cooking rice the easiest part of your meal prep. Minute Ready to Serve Rice, available in varieties including Whole Grain Brown, Brown & Wild, Multi-Grain Medley, White and more, is fully-cooked and heats in a microwave in just 60 seconds, making it an ideal portable lunch option. For a quick and easy weeknight meal, Success Rice - in Brown, White, Jasmine and Basmati varieties - yields perfectly cooked rice in just 10 minutes, plus it's premeasured in its convenient boil-in-bags. To learn more, visit or 2. Rice offers health benefits depending on which variety you choose. Brown rice, for example, is a 100 percent whole grain and research shows that whole grains may help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer if eaten in a well-balanced diet. Rice eaters also consume more vital nutrients and a lower percentage of

duce your appetite. Plus, when you opt for foolproof versions like Minute Rice or Success Rice, you can pat yourself on the back for serving something easy to make and nutritionally rewarding. Who wouldn't feel good about that? Finally, rice's versatility makes it a perfect ingredient in a wide range of cuisines, and for virtually every meal of the day.
