From the desk of DISTRICT GOVERNOR

October 2, 2013

My warmest greetings go to the leaders and members of Division H under the astute leadership of Division Governor Bharat Mehta, DTM! The launch of the Division H Newsletter will coincide with the 89th anniversary of the founding of Toastmasters on October 22, 2013. The first meeting of the “Number One Toastmasters Club” in Santa Ana, California was held in a humble basement and the rest as they say, is history. Let us not forget to pay rich tributes to Doctor Ralph Smedley, who introduced and implemented the wonderful concept of Toastmasters. Today, the toastmasters clubs are spread over122 countries world-wide. Isn’t that truly amazing? In District 20 we boast of 15 Divisions and 64 Areas with, at the latest count, a whopping 294 clubs! Yes, the Toastmasters Movement has indeed made its mark in the Middle East. We, as leaders and members of this great organization have the obligation to reach out to non-Toastmasters and introduce them to the organization that helped us in our personal lives and in our careers. I am proud to say that Division H boasts of numerous awards and citations in fulfilling the mission of Toastmasters.

DISTRICT 20 GOVERNOR Victoria Ferrer Mustafa, DTM

DIVISION H – WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE

Let us utilize the Division H Newsletter as a vehicle to not only encourage our leaders and members to further develop their own communication and leadership skills but to be part of the larger Toastmasters vision in helping spread the countless benefits of Toastmasters. I congratulate Division H leaders and members who have worked hard and put a lot of time and effort for launching this Newsletter. I am sure it will be a truly outstanding newsletter!

From the desk of DIVISION GOVERNOR Dear Division H Toastmasters, I am delighted to present you our Division's first Newsletter for the year 2013-2014. First, I am proud to have your continued trust and faith in me to serve our Division H for the year 2013-2014. You are witnessing that my team and I are doing our best to give you eventful and successful year ahead. I am confident that you will continue to enjoy and excel in your TM journey for the coming year. Second, we have done many innovations this year. This is the first time that Division H structure for the year 2013-2014 has been expanded to provide more opportunities to Division TMs to lead and contribute at Division level. I thank these committed TMs for taking up the roles and responsibilities at Division Level and each one of them is putting in their best efforts to serve you club members. Division H has conducted its first ever YLP as part of community service program at Division Level. First Time, Division H has brought a World Champion Speaker (MTM Shurook Albanna) to Abu Dhabi for an exciting educational session. We will continue to provide you many more such exciting events. Our targets for this year are to meet your needs and to achieve distinguished status for all the Division H Clubs and President Distinguished Status for Division H. In addition, the focus areas will be to work on weak clubs to make them stronger and create new clubs on sustainable basis to create more leadership opportunities. Off course, we have organized and will continue to organize educational and training events and many fun-filled events throughout the year to provide you some of the best TM moments and experience. I wish to thank all the Division H leaders and members for their hard work and commitment made last year under the excellent leadership of our immediate Past Division Governor DTM Marwan Al Shayea. The Division has performed well last year and all the credit goes to DTM Marwan Shayea. We, the Division Team, are indeed lucky that we will continue to have his support and guidance this year in addition to support from other senior Toastmasters. So Division H Toastmasters, with your kind support, I promise to make this year memorable and successful and to take our Division H to greater heights and to its deserving glory. A lot of hard work has been put in by Assistant Division Governor (PR) DTM Sunil Kottarathil in producing this newsletter. Due to his extraordinary diligent efforts, this newsletter has taken shape and makes so informative and interesting reading. Please read and enjoy the rest of the newsletter.

Rome, as the old adage goes, was certainly not built in a day. But this newsletter was indeed made in a day! Well, almost! Communicate your intention or plan to do something and you will get unlimited advice from hundreds on how to do it. Ask for contributing towards the execution of the plan and you will be truly amazed. Amazed at how suddenly people realize just how busy they are with other work! It was no surprise therefore, that when the preparations for the Division newsletter were initiated during early September, there was a lot enthusiasm and encouragement. As weeks passed by, with hardly a couple of responses, the newsletter seemed to be a distant dream. The old (by few days) saying appeared to be true - Where there is a ‘will’, there is a death!! Strike while the iron is hot, they say. What with the summer fading away, it has finally taken the long holidays to make things hot again!!! A final reminder to the energetic division team and setting aside a day free from other obligations to fulfill this commitment towards the Newsletter, finally started yielding results. Sending ‘Eid Mubarak’ wishes to friends was a refreshing break in between long sessions with the word processor all through the day. At this juncture, my heartfelt gratitude goes out to Bill Gates and his team for providing convenient newsletter-friendly features and tool bars within MS Word!! All that is written well remains well – well, i.e. until someone reads it! While you enjoy reading this newsletter (or while pretending to), don’t forget to throw both bouquets and brickbats at the editorial team. Happy reading!!

MESSAGE - AREA GOVERNOR

I feel really privileged to be a part of the Toastmasters fraternity for the last 6 years and more so to get the opportunity to serve them. As the Area 2 Governor, I understand my responsibilities, but I am also aware that it is an uphill task, especially while filling in the shoes so to speak, of my predecessor TM Sujatha Parthasarathy, a prolific leader the great legacy she left behind. Having seen and experienced the commitment of our club leaders, I know that all clubs in Area 2 will meet their goal of becoming Distinguished Clubs. However, in my opinion, helping club members achieve their aspirations should be a higher priority. Retaining new members and keeping them motivated is also another challenge club leaders need to confront. What makes Area 2 different is the passion of its club leaders. Passion to excel makes them stand out. Passion and dedication are the hallmarks of great personalities and we have only just seen the tribute given to the iconic Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar by the media last week when he decided to hang his boots after a successful sporting career that spanned over 24 years. What make Sachin Tendulkar great are not his records but rather his passion and dedication to the game which brought about the records. Having a passionate, dedicated and supportive team of club leaders and the guidance of Division Governor DTM Bharat Mehta, I have no doubt in my mind about making Area 2 a President’s Distinguished Area this year.

Bhojraj Mane CC CL Area 2 Governor – (2013-2014)

Wishing all the clubs of Area 2 a great Year ahead!!!

Area 9 is one of the largest Areas in the entire District from a geographic perspective with clubs located across a span of over 200kms – from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi through Mussafah and Umm Al Nar. Though Area 9 was initially comprised of Al Ain based clubs, as all clubs except one closed down, the Area was re-aligned to include clubs in Abu Dhabi and Mussafah also. Though geographically challenged, our main goal this year will be to provide guidance and support to all clubs and to ensure they are following the toastmasters guidelines effectively so as the members to gain maximum benefit from the program. Merezban Katrak ACS ALB Area 9 Governor – (2013-2014)

Lot of growth potential has been identified in Mussafah area, which can be materialized through a proper plan.

MESSAGE - AREA GOVERNOR

Area 11 is one of the youngest Areas in Division H. It consists of five clubs - Al Jazeera, Spectrum, ISC, ETA and Fluor Toastmasters. We have the privilege of having some great leaders and great speakers from Division-H. Al Jazeera, Spectrum and ISC have speakers who made it to Division and District level Speech Contests. ISC Toastmasters has the reputation of consistently retaining highest membership base in the Division. Even though young in Toastmasters family, ETA and Fluor Toastmasters have some very promising members who are ready to take up any challenge. Fluor Toastmasters has achieved SMEDLEY Award in the first year itself in their toastmaster’s journey. In the last two years Area 11 has developed to a mature area under the leadership of past Area Governors TM Ramnath Annavi and TM Derick D’Souza. Our goal for the year is to utilize the expertise within Area 11 to strengthen the clubs which in turn will truly benefit the members with the real objectives of being in Toastmasters. I am confident of the complete support of Division in this journey towards excellence. Anoop OK, ACB ALB Area 11 Governor – (2013-2014)

Clubs and members of Area 26 are on top of the world this year!!! It is a matter of great pride to achieve many goals in this short span of time. Out of many, here are the most outstanding ones:• • • • • • • •

Three clubs in Area 26 got the SMEDLEY award this September. All Clubs are improving in terms of membership and meeting quality. Two clubs are soon going to release their newsletters Leaders of Basharia Chapter contributed effectively and took part in the recently concluded YLP. Clubs database is being updated regularly Basharia and Intilaaqah achieved 5 DCP points, and by December we are planning to achieve 5-6 points for other clubs as well. All Club Calendars and Annual plans are ready and were being followed up closely. Official Area Governor’s visits are completed for three clubs and the fourth will be done soon. DIVISION H – WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE

MESSAGE - AREA GOVERNOR

Today, Area 23 remains one of the most vibrant in not just Division H, but in the whole of District 20. I am lucky to inherit such a dynamic Area from my illustrious predecessors. The four clubs in our Area cover the entire spectrum in terms of experience from a fledgling OUR Toastmasters club at one end to a mature, seasoned and proven club in Millennium Toastmasters at the other. We also have the Abu Dhabi ICAI Toastmasters club which has matured into a force to reckon with in a short period of time. But what is most unique about Area 23 is that it is also home to HUMOROIDS, the one and only advanced toastmasters club devoted to humor. Millennium Toastmasters Club has remained the brightest star on our firmament. Thanks to President MTM Rency Patcheco and her team, Millennium leads the DCP points tally in the whole of District 20 with an impressive six points not to mention the Smedley they just won. Humoroids, under the able leadership of President TM Derick D’Souza and ICAI under President MTM Gayathri Vijay have also fared well with 3 DCP points each. In addition, ICAI has also qualified for a Smedley. Both of these clubs are not far behind Millennium and are well on course to reaching the distinguished club status by December. OUR Toastmasters Club is the youngest club in Area 23 and is yet to fully stabilize. It has its unique set of challenges owing to the fact that its membership base of just eight toastmasters consists of young youthful MBA students, only few of whom are employed. A combination of factors, including excessive demands on their time from educational and work pressures, youthful exuberance understandably going awry have caused this club to be currently in limbo; this, despite the fact that the club is led by an exceptionally mature and devoted President MTM Deepa Lobo and has had the support of several senior toastmasters. The Division Management is now assisting us in the process of turning this club around which we expect to do very shortly. I would like to take a moment to emphasis here that the ‘numbers’ that keep Area 23 and most of its clubs at the very top has never been our true goal. These numbers, the DCP points and the awards that come our way are only a by-product of our quest for the true goal; the goal to imbibe and inculcate the values enshrined by toastmasters – Integrity, Service, Respect and Excellence. Ending on a positive note, I would like to share that the groundwork for establishing a new corporate club for the Burjeel hospital was begun by our Immediate Past Area Governor Shiv Prasad Gowda and has been carried forward by our current Asst. Division Governor- Marketing Anil Akkineni. The Burjeel Toastmasters Club is expected to be chartered in November and will surely be a harbinger of an even more successful period for Area 23.

Manmohan Sreedhar CC ALB Area 23 Governor – (2013-2014)

Persevere for excellence with integrity. Good Luck! OCTOBER 2013

MESSAGE - AREA GOVERNOR

It is a privilege and honour to serve as Area 55 Governor in Division H under the able & visionary leadership of Division Governor DTM Bharat Mehta. Area 55 is comprised of a group of 2 corporate clubs: VELOSIAN & NBAD-One. I am also lucky to have 3 other pro-active clubs, Inner-Universe, NMC community and KERA. It was my dream to serve as Area Governor of Area 55 since I joined as the ISC Toastmaster Club as Charter Secretary. Past Area 55 Governors, MTM Omana Kallarakkal, TM Praveen Kumar Rao, TM Anil Akkineni, TM Santosh Shetty & Immediate Past Area Governor Ashit Korgaokar have set high standards for clubs in our area with their rich and envious contributions. From the day of inception, Area 55 always stood tall among other areas in Division H / District 20. After re-alignment in 2013, ISC TM Club was joined with Area 11 and newly formed NBAD-One joined Area 55. I am happy to share the good news that I could encourage both corporate clubs to obtain their TM pins, badges and club banner for the first time. I have visited most of the Clubs in Area 55 to find their interests & also to address their concern and will soon visit the other clubs. I am proud that all the clubs are on the path to achieving greater horizons under the highly motivated, charged leadership of the presidents and club officers backed up with timely feed-backs and suggestions. After the membership renewal all clubs are progressing in line with their DCP Goal. NMC Community club qualified for SMEDLEY award. Congratulations and bravo for your achievement. During Area council meeting, it was decided to have a combined meeting of all clubs in 2nd / 3rd week of December 2013. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to division & area leaders who always extended their hand of encouragement and support whenever needed. All clubs are doing a great job, keep up the good work, and look forward to closely working with you all in the upcoming months as we hope to make Area 55 as one of the best. Pandari V. Looking back is always easier than looking forward. When I penned my first message as the Assistant Division Governor Training for the Division H Bulletin released at the Division Conference this year, I realized that we still had a few months to make a meaningful impact with the Toastmasters programs in Division H. Looking back, now I realize how time actually flew away. It is indeed a great experience to serve at the Division level. Nevertheless, it is not my personal experience that counts but more importantly it is the experience of every toastmaster in this Division that really matters. Being a Division with quality members and clubs in District20 the challenges could be far stronger. With 30 clubs located all over Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, at the start of the term, especially with the Area realignment proposal being approved, we really had to put all our efforts and resources together. We needed both physical and mental strength to tackle a Division of this size. As such, we have taken a new approach during this term to serve the Division better; hence I propose the theme Dedication to Excellence. In order to reach out to all clubs and members more effectively, we chose to move away from the traditional centers of activity in Abu Dhabi to other clubs of the Division H located in Mussafah and Al Ain. Instead of waiting for members to come, we move closer to the members. We want more members to experience the Toastmasters programs and its various activities. Besides giving opportunity to smaller clubs to take up the challenge of organizing meetings effectively and which includes speech contests, workshops, award presentations, it will be a great learning experience for all to foster better understanding and closer relationships.

The first round of Club Officers’ Training (2013-14) was conducted on 28th June at Al Rimal Club. As all chapters had already completed their club officer elections and finalized their new line of leaders, enthusiasm to learn and grow was visible on everyone’s face during the session. With the accumulated experience the officers gained over the years, the trainers had plenty to share and explore with the new leaders. By ensuring attendance of at least four club officers for the training session, the clubs can grabbed their first half DCP point right at the beginning of the term.

DTM Sunil Kottarathil conducted the session with in his unique style with a special emphasis to Conducting Club Business online through Club Central. Despite having overshot time by almost a half hour, members were keen to carry on and the questions never really ceased. It was a proud day for the young and vibrant OUR Toastmasters who organized such a big event successfully for the first time! All officers found the tips shared during the training very useful and promised to share the knowledge further and put it all into practice for the collective good of the Division.

Division H successfully conducted their first ever Youth Leadership Program during the period from 20th August to 06th September 2013. This was the first YLP ever conducted at Division level whereas earlier, such sessions were always conducted by individual Clubs or Areas. This program was a part of the Division H initiative towards community service and with a view to impart communication and leadership skills to young children and possibly future Toastmasters. The encouraging feedback received as well as the excellent performance showcased on the concluding day by everyone of the twenty-nine potential youth leaders of six different nationalities, was proof enough that all participants richly benefitted from this program.

First ever Division level YLP was conducted during Aug 20th - Sept 6th at GASCO

DIVISION H – WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE

Hard work, time and commitment from the YLP coordinators TM Shuchita Udas, TM Derick D’Souza and TM Pratima Mishra ensured the total success of the program. This being his first time experience as a YPL coordinator, TM Derick believes it was not for their experience, but for their talents and good looks that they were selected for the role. Division Governor DTM Bharat Mehta and Immediate Past Division Governor DTM Marwan Shayea guided and supported the YLP all through providing constant encouragement and unstinting support where it mattered most i.e. by ensuring the availability of infrastructural and logistical strength. The venue, facilities and financial support were arranged through the benevolence of GASCO, which ensured that the event progressed in a smooth and professional manner.

EVENTS A DAY WITH THE WORLD CHAMPION

The title of 2013 World Champion of Public Speaking was awarded to Presiyan Vasilev of Chicago, Illinois, District 30, for his speech “Changed by a Tire.” Second- and third-place winners were, respectively, Kingi Biddle of Rotorua, New Zealand, District 72, for his speech “The Sitting Place” and Shurooq AlBanna of Dubai, UAE, District 20, for her speech “Finding the Pearl.” This is the first time that an Emirati and for that matter a toastmaster from anywhere in the entire District 20 has reached the finals and come tantalizingly close to the coveted title. She has been a fantastic speaker all through as those of us who witnessed her performance during DTAC 2013 will testify. It is a testimony to her perseverance as much as to her natural talents that she took her speech to winning at the highest level. Division H arranged an educational session with TM Shurooq AlBanna on 04th October 2013 at the GASCO Auditorium, Abu Dhabi. The audience grabbed valuable lessons from the session and thoroughly enjoyed her impromptu rendition of her award winning speech and her tips and tricks to get to the top. Her presentation of the humorous speech “Mamma Mia – part 2” which won her the second place in Division J contest 2013 was a bonus for all attendees. This educational session was preceded with sessions from two seasoned toastmasters, Sudhir Kumar Shetty (COO - Global Operations, UAE Exchange) and Dr. Nasef Dhafari, DTM (Past Division Governor and Immediate Past District PRO). The Keynote Speech by Sudhir Shetty titled “What it takes to build an Organization” was awe inspiring inside look at the UAE Exchange and how it was build-up as a global brand so successfully. He shared his experience in taking UAE Exchange to top and there were excellent learning tips as so many of the factors had a clear analogy to the world of toastmasters. DTM Nasef Dhafari presented a very refreshing session for all toastmasters, emphasizing on the values of toastmasters.

INNOVATION Right when I first heard of ‘Humoroids’ Toastmasters Club, I realized that a focus on humor was obviously one specific purpose that TM Devlal Sahadevan and others had in mind while chartering this Advanced Toastmasters Club under

Division

H.

I

joined

Humoroids

Advanced

Toastmasters Club mid 2013 and I enjoyed every single meeting with its insanely exciting themes that never failed to create a non-stop laughter riot from start to finish and often until the day after. But something seemed amiss. I could feel it, but never could put a finger on it, until just a few months ago. It all began during a casual chat with the Humoroids President, TM Derick, about the concept behind creating this club to give rise to something unique, something creative and to bring out the best of the latent humorous talent amongst Division H Toastmasters, while simultaneously

retaining

that

the

core

elements

of

Toastmasters. It seemed like a tall order at the start – so many ‘ingredients’ which we knew existed in Division H, but were scattered all over. Given that, creating something that would be the sole signature of Humoroids, was definitely challenging but not impossible. So, how then could we create a new Jim Carey or Rowan Atkinson just on our own, we wondered? It was TM Derick who proposed we create something on the lines of impromptu “Acting”. And this could be done in so many different ways. One, would be to give two or three role players diverse, unconnected

characters

and

scenarios

on

the

spot,

ensuring that each role player was told only his or her role and scenario and not that of the others. The players Rency Patcheco CC CL

would then have to initiate a conversation, completely fabricated based on the scenario and their own roles, counter ACTING the other person’s seemingly response to match their perspective.

34

vague

CONTD… DIVISION H – WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE

CONTD… Two, would be in the form of a game. 3 or 4 role players act out on-the-spot characters given to them in accordance to a scenario, while one role player has to identify the character in a conversation linked to the situation. Three, 2 or 3 role players are aware of their characters as well as that of each other. But as per the scenario, they are required to act out their roles and build the conversation taking abstracts of text from a story book or

fiction

novel

given

to

them.

Again,

this

will

undoubtedly carry the conversation from ground level to sky high. How the role players counter act one text abstract to another, all depends on the creative and humorous talent of the players. The audience is always aware of the role players and the scenario. Having discussed the game plan, it was decided to bring all the ‘ingredients’ together and let the dynamics spark off. Potential

names

for this

idea

flew

back

and

forth

between President Derick and I much like a long ping-pong rally - until I came up with the name “Counter ACT”. An ‘Act’ by every role player, that would instinctively trigger a ‘counter-act’ from the other role players’ resulting in unintended but wildly hilarious chaos. I was given the privilege to launch this new segment in the Humoroids

Advanced

Toastmasters

Club

meeting

on

18thSeptember, with an introduction to the concept and a live ‘Counter-Act’ session to give the audience a feel of the concept. Here are a few of the main ideas that went into the making of Counter ACT: •

A humorous spinoff to Toastmaster Table Topics or thinking on your feet

Taking Public Speaking to a whole new and sometimes embarrassing level

CONTD… OCTOBER 2013

CONTD… •

Living up to being an advanced Club: If you’re not creating

something

new,

you’re

not

learning

anything! •

You know you got talent… do it, show it, get better at it!

Bringing

out

your

best

and

boosting

your

confidence levels…… It is always a treat to be in any toastmasters club that conducts its meetings in unique and innovative ways. But why stop there, when you can do so much more. There is a popular saying… “There are No Limitations, because you have NONE”. We only limit ourselves by our own thinking. The launch of the Counter ACT got such a phenomenal response, which was truly overwhelming; Something I would never have known if I had thought for a second that it could not be done. I am very grateful to TM Derick D’souza,

TM

Devlal

and

DTM

for

Counter ACT

to

become

a

signature

label!!!! On that note and on behalf of the Humoroids Advanced Toastmasters Club President, I would like to invite all with a funny bone and those who have completed the CC manual, to join this Club and challenge your humor and impromptu speaking skills. Counter ACT will give you that platform to reach higher in your abilities to entertain – again and again!

BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE When I was at school, I remember my parents asking me to be serious, so that I could get into a good college. When I reached college, I was again told to be serious so that I could get good grades and get a good job. When I started working, parents as well as my boss told me to be serious all over again so that I could get a promotion. School was done, college was done, promotion was also done but advice on being SERIOUS was not done. Yet again, when I got settled with work I was told to be serious (and this time it was from my loved ones): serious in my relationship, so that I can win a partner for life. I felt like the word SERIOUS was my pet name that I could never shake off. Dear Toastmasters, today, after more than fourteen odd years of work experience and now in my late 30’s, I realize that to be successful in life whether both professional or personal, I need not be serious at all. What I really need to be and which I think is very vital for all is to be SINCERE; sincere at work, to my employees, to the stake holders and sincere in my relationships with family, friends etc. My parents, the most experienced the most mature people back then were right but not completely right. The need to be serious for success is a forgone conclusion, but in today’s world if you ask if to be happy, being successful is enough, the answer is an emphatic NO. I will be happy only if I have a balanced successful life. This balance will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for “BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE".

Work-Life Balance does not mean an equal balance. Trying to schedule an equal number of hours for each of your various work and personal activities is usually unrewarding and unrealistic. Life is and should be more fluid than that.

CONTD… DIVISION H – WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE

CONTD…

BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE Your best individual work-life balance will vary over time, often on a daily basis. The right balance for you today will probably be different for you tomorrow. The right balances for you when you are single will be different when you get married, and when you have children; when you start a new career versus when you are nearing retirement. Toastmasters, stop looking outside. It’s up to us as individuals to take control and responsibility for the type of life we want to lead. If we don’t design our life, someone else will design it for you and you may not like their idea of balance. Go back home, look at your family and ask yourself if you have given them and yourself the best of your time. If yes, then sleep peacefully; if no, then it’s time to wake up and start afresh. It’s never too late to make a new beginning.
