elcome to the 2014-2015 season of Youth Symphony of Kansas City. Our mission is to educate young musicians through enhanced orchestral experiences and to build the present and future classical music community. To that end, the program has been home to more than 8,500 talented musicians spanning more than a halfcentury. In December 2014 we are honored to travel to Chicago to share with more than 17,000 music professionals the excellent orchestral music education Kansas City has to offer. We are privileged to have been invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic – An International Band and Orchestra Conference. Amid this excitement, you have a part to play in ensuring the future of quality music education in Kansas City. I invite you to make a taxdeductible charitable contribution to the Youth Symphony. Your gift directly supports program needs, including today’s concert. Please visit www.youthsymphonykc.org and click on the “Donate Now” button to make a contribution online. The students who participate in Youth Symphony of Kansas City are the next generation of community-minded professionals and life-long contributors, participants and supporters of great music and fine art. It is a privilege to share today’s spirited performance with you and we invite you to join us time and time again to hear the future now. Musically yours,

Youth Symphony of Kansas City 2014 | 2015

T

hree-hundred sixty student musicians from nearly fifty cities within Missouri and Kansas come together weekly to create the four full orchestras of Youth Symphony of Kansas City. Each orchestra is led by a professional conductor and music educator. These dedicated student musicians come together in intensive regular rehearsals to shape and hone their craft together as ensembles. Nearly all Youth Symphony of Kansas City performances are free and open to the public. In the current season, 10 concerts will be presented. Between $15,000 - 20,000 in financial assistance is made available annually to students whose families demonstrate qualified need. Generous contributors – individuals, foundations and corporations – believe strongly in the Youth Symphony of Kansas City and help to ensure that all qualified young musicians are able to participate fully. All students who participate in Youth Symphony of Kansas City also participate in their school band or orchestra program where available. More than 150 schools are represented through student participation. Though not a requirement for participation, ninety percent of Youth Symphony students study privately on their instrument. Youth Symphony of Kansas City affords its young musicians unique opportunities to engage with professional musicians and educators from arts organizations and educational institutions including the Kansas City Symphony, Friends of Chamber Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, The University of Kansas, Park University and William Jewell College. The organization is fortunate for a particularly special relationship with the Kansas City Symphony which has entailed an annual Side-by-Side Concert at Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts as well as the invitation to perform at the KC Symphony’s annual Pops in the Park Labor Day Concert at Shawnee Mission Park. It is through meaningful professional relationships and the generosity of those within the Kansas City arts community that opportunities such as these come to fruition.

Marylou Turner President, Board of Directors

F r o m the B o ard P r e si d en t

Thank you for being a part of the “family” of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City. Our four orchestras are made up of 360 talented young musicians from all across the metropolitan area. We are delighted to be an integral part of the artistic community of this region. It is wonderful to have collaborations with the Kansas City Symphony, the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, more than 150 private music educators and the more than 125 schools in this area. It was a privilege for our musicians to perform at the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference in January 2013, the Kansas Music Educators Association Conference in February 2014 and now to present at The Midwest Clinic - An International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago in December 2014. The Board of Directors, the artistic and administrative staff and the musicians are most appreciative of your support. Sincerely,

C ON C E R T S E A S ON

Daniel Ketter I was in the Youth Symphony for six years from seventh grade through twelfth grade. I learned a lot from the conductor at the time and met a lot of really amazing people, some that I still stay in touch with and play with pretty regularly. We went on a concert tour to Vienna, Budapest and Prague. The thing I most remember, outside just the cities, was the audience’s reaction. Everywhere we would play there was really enthusiastic applause afterwards in just a way that I’d never seen anywhere [else]. It was just really fun to go [with my friends] to a new place and play for people that had a really energetic, enthusiastic response. My Youth Symphony experience was really a large part of my musical education in high school. It gave me a chance to play in a real orchestra with people who wanted to be there and wanted to play. I’m starting my doctoral studies soon at Eastman. I’ll be teaching music theory and cello there as a teaching assistant. In the future, I’m hoping to find performance opportunities as well, but I do have a passion for teaching and I’m sure that will end up being a part of my career. Daniel Ketter holds degrees in cello performance from Eastman School of Music and Peabody Conservatory, as well as a bachelor of arts in mathematics. In the fall of 2013, Daniel returned to Eastman to begin work on doctoral studies in cello performance.
