ABOUT MANHATTAN

1

Visitors find the last four percent of North America’s natural tallgrass prairie around Manhattan. Surrounded by some of the nation’s most fertile soil and abundant grasslands, Manhattan restaurants have practiced and perfected farm-to-table dining and grain-to-glass brewing. Grains for beer production at Little Apple Brewing Company and Tallgrass Tap House are grown from Kansas soil, as are Flint Hills grapes harvested by Liquid Art Winery vineyards.

The sensory-stimulating Flint Hills Discovery Center immerses visitors in the wild, tallgrass prairie’s beautiful and powerful natural life cycle. During the multi-media, surround-sound film, viewers see, feel, smell and hear intense thunderstorms, smoky fires, raging floods and buffalo stampedes. Through engaging exhibits, visitors learn about prairie conservation initiatives, the tallgrasses’ sprawling root system, native wildlife, indigenous wildflowers, Native American prairie culture, historic railroad towns and settler wagon trains that traversed the Great Plains of Kansas.

Bread is big business in Manhattan centered in the nation’s Heartland. A year’s worth of Kansas wheat would pack a train that stretches nearly from the Rockies to the Atlantic. That’s 1,700 miles of grain bushels! King Arthur Flour and Kansas Wheat Commission sponsor the biennial National Festival of Breads at the Manhattan Conference Center. At this nationwide contest, eight American home-baker finalists compete for the championship on June 8.

Bill Snyder is a legend not only in these parts but in college football history. Over the course of three decades, 215 career victories and his College Football Hall of Fame career, Kansas State University’s former coach is a household name. The winning record isn’t Snyder’s only claim to fame. The university’s stadium, campus and City of Manhattan have grown and thrived since Snyder’s and his Wildcats football teams’ successes dating back to 1989. His accomplishments and commitment to Manhattan have shaped Kansas State and are forever part of our community. As architect of what’s considered the greatest turnaround in college football history, Snyder ignited Manhattan’s economic revitalization. The city our visitors enjoy today is former coach Bill Snyder’s enduring legacy.

Willie Wildcat attracts crowds wherever he goes. Kansas State University’s mascot draws fans, students, kids, families and tourists for selfies and spirited cheering, especially at sporting events where he makes the rounds giving high-fives and signing autographs, which are almost as prized as Wildcat wins. You’ll spot Willie about town and at Kansas State games firing up Cat fans with rousing chants and cheers. Go Cats!

In the Midwest’s once vast prairielands, the legend of folk hero Johnny Kaw boasts that the burly Kansas wheat farmer bottled gallons of sunshine and spread sunflower seedlings around the state of Kansas. So sprung from this tall tale Kansas’ nickname the Sunflower State. The story goes that Johnny has whipped all challengers, even that Minnesota lumberjack Paul Bunyan. A 25-foot tall statue of Johnny Kaw towers above Manhattan’s City Park keeping the legend alive. The new Johnny Kaw Plaza dedicated in 2019 promises visitors an Instagram-worthy moment telling their own tales about visiting Manhattan.
