dear reader, Is it really fall again? Time definitely flies, though a lot has changed in our world since our fall/winter issue of 2020. What am I saying? A lot has changed since our first 2021 issue! With all the evolving information keeping

everyone on their toes—and often off balance—it can be difficult to remember that we’re all in this together. We all have stress and challenges in our lives, and, even though we may not be able to see past those challenges, remember kindness always wins. Being kind and compassionate toward our neighbors and other members of our community is the path back from the grief, pain, and anger. Neighbors and community are what Shawnee Magazine is all about, and we hope to bring to your attention the great things about Shawnee and the other people who call it home. This issue we meet Gale Nation, a hand-lettering artist who found her niche adding inspirational sayings to old maps and globes—and found a home in Shawnee. Turn to page 8 to meet her. A year after becoming principal at Mill Valley High School (during a global pandemic, no less!), Gail Holder has found her place at this growing academic powerhouse. Learn more on page 22. A very personal story is our main feature for this issue. Writer Beth Kornegay shares her journey of surviving cancer and introduces us to three other people who are also working as Ambassadors for FightCRC.org. Read Beth’s account on page 26. Three businesses round out this issue of Shawnee Magazine. Learn more about the new apartment complex, Sixty16, now found downtown (page 18). Visit with staff and patients at New Hope Chiropractic on page 14, and take a ride around Twin Mill Farm, an equine boarding facility, on page 30. And let’s not forget the Resource Guide and Membership Directory for the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce beginning on page 34. Turn these pages to bring your community a bit closer and hold tight to the kindness and compassion you find here—in Shawnee. Stay safe, stay well, stay kind,

s doodling a career? Most people would say no. But for a little girl playing with her father’s fountain nib pen and ink, doodling led to a fulfilling career. Before Gale Nation was the darling of Hallmark stores for her hand-lettered prints and resident of the local favorite maker space, Bella Patina, she was a girl making pretty squiggles in class. “My dad always had amazing penmanship, and I wanted to write like him,” Nation says. “He caught me playing with his fountain pen and ink when I was 6, and instead of telling me to stop, he said, ‘Let’s learn to do it correctly.’” That gentle guidance from her father, Lewis, was what she needed to continue developing her skill. She continued to excel at cursive writing and art; she became the person to see for lettering on posters for the student council. But when college rolled around, she still wasn’t sure about the future. Knowing that she didn’t want to be a teacher or a nurse, as her mother, Verletta, suggested, Nation studied interior and graphic design at the University of Oklahoma. After completing her degree, she had one goal—to work for Hallmark. She sent in her portfolio and was kindly but firmly rejected. She tried again in her 30s. Again they passed. Nation didn’t sit around waiting for Hallmark to call; she had three children, went through a divorce and was a single mom, and then more than 10 years later, met her now-husband, an accountant, and added a stepson to the mix. Inspiration came from a pile of debris. “I had started making wooden signs with quotes on them,” Nation says. “They were building a house across the street from us, and I just went and picked up scrap lumber they had. And I kept chopping them up and putting quotes on them, and people kept buying them.” Nation found herself squarely in the middle of a Joanna Gaines and ‘Live, Laugh, Love’ maelstrom. Her talents had finally found an audience. She started selling her signs out of a store in Topeka, but she always had her eye on bigger things—and Hallmark was just a few miles away.

A New Chapter About four years ago, with the success of her hand-lettered signs and an empty nest, Nation and her husband, Vic, decided to make the jump to the Kansas City area—Shawnee, to be precise. The couple found a house with plenty of space and a sunny yard and created a haven for Nation’s art. Nation had already partnered with Bella Patina to showcase her work, which had expanded to include what would become her trademark—maps and globes. She says the shift came naturally with a gift she made for a friend who was moving away. After she posted a photo of the finished print on Facebook, demand for her maps surged. She had found her niche. Now that Nation had a studio at home and a platform at Bella Patina, she thought she had arrived. She had loyal customers and had even started teaching classes on hand-lettering, proving her mother’s teaching predictions. But the universe had just a bit more in store for her. Four years ago, a buyer from Hallmark wandered into Bella Patina on a First Friday and asked if Nation would be interested in sitting in the window of their Country Club Plaza store and lettering during the Plaza Art Fair. She says she tried to hide her joy. “I tried to play it cool. ‘Sure, I guess I could do that.’ Meanwhile, inside, I’m screaming! So I did that, and that’s how my relationship with Hallmark started,” Nation says. Now, her products are sold in Hallmark stores nationwide. Her father was quick to point out that her art and passion still found a way despite her rejections over the years.

Her colorful, home studio will soon be filled with students learning to be creative.

Examples of Nation’s work: Beautiful lettering on a map to help inspire people on their life journeys. An elegant piece of embroidery with a prophetic touch. Color is key for this artist.

End of Comfort Zone While Nation loves to create, she’s found a new outlet in teaching as well. Although she has never enjoyed public speaking, she says talking about art has always been comfortable. Adept at finding people with talent and nurturing them to find their unique style, she has helped launch the careers of several of her students After the pandemic hit, she transitioned to online classes, which she never intended to do. Proving herself wrong is something Nation is happy to do. “I swore I would never teach video classes. I just didn’t think it would translate well. But when the pandemic hit, we figured out a way,” Nation says. “It surprised me when their faces started popping up on (the screen). I was just so happy to see people! This was fun. I’ve taught over 1,000 people (online) in the last 18 months, from Japan, Australia, Dubai, Italy, and all over the United States.” As life settles down, Nation is gradually transitioning to teaching vaccinated groups in her home studio. Next up? Teach an embroidery class. Vivid colors are a nice change from the bold black strokes that made Nation famous. As she indulges a passion, she gives others an outlet to be creative.

What is Hand Lettering?

The swooping script that defines Nation’s work is unmistakably hers; so how did she learn? In addition to learning from her father, Nation also took formal calligraphy classes. She says the regimented style of calligraphy wasn’t a great fit for her though it taught her the basics of shaping letters in the correct way. Nation calls her style of writing modern calligraphy, and it’s much more forgiving than the structure of formal calligraphy. She says that shading, rather than specific pens, is the key to her style. “What you see on the prints is my regular cursive handwriting, but shaded. I shade the downstroke, and it’s a looser style where nothing is on a straight line. It takes the pressure off of traditional calligraphy because it’s not controlled by the pressure of your hand,” she says. The pressure to “get it right” can be an obstacle to those starting out, so Nation’s more casual style creates opportunities for individuals to shine. Nation’s pen of choice? A regular Sharpie marker.

The Business of

Dealing Hope Early experiences prompt doctor to pursue degree and open his own chiropractic office.

Still Training

I

f you ask Dr. Dana Huebner about his business, he will tell you that he is in the business of dealing hope. Dr. Huebner is the owner and lead chiropractor at New Hope Chiropractic located off of 65th Street in Shawnee. It all started when Huebner was seeking a little hope of his own. “When I was 18 years old, I rolled a vehicle going 60 mph,” Huebner says.“I walked away from the crash but ended up in the ER later that day. Everything appeared OK, but I was not feeling OK. One of the nurses recommended I go see a chiropractor. He helped me feel a whole lot better when everyone else had said that there wasn’t technically anything wrong with me.” This experience sparked an interest in chiropractic care with Huebner. Though he initially explored pre-med in school, another experience led Huebner to down the road to chiropractic. “I was an MMA fighter when I was in undergrad college (see “Still Training” at right). I had a fair amount of injuries. The medical side of things failed me. The physical therapy side of things failed me. It was a chiropractor who was able to keep me fighting,” he says. “That’s when I decided I didn’t want to be a medical doctor. I wanted to be a doctor of chiropractic and be able to help people in a natural way, with my own hands.” After two such impactful encounters with chiropractic care, Huebner knew the path he had to take. He and his wife, Lacie, moved to Kansas from their native Nebraska so Huebner could attend Cleveland Chiropractic College, located in Overland Park. After four years of undergraduate work and four years of post-graduate work, Huebner opened his practice in Shawnee just months after graduation. “We had every intention of going back to Nebraska. We just liked it here so much we wanted to stay,” Huebner says of his Kansas home. In terms of his business location, Shawnee has proven to be the ideal spot. “We really like the overall location of where we are at. It’s a business district, a busy area with convenient access between (Interstate) 435 and Shawnee Mission Parkway,” he says. “We see people from Overland Park, Olathe, Bonner Springs, Leavenworth, and even the Missouri side. Shawnee has quick access to everyone in the metro. We can serve everybody without taking a huge amount out of their day.” The clinic, which specializes in pre-natal and pediatric care, just celebrated its third anniversary in July. Pediatrics was an easy call for Huebner when he, once again, had an impactful experience involving chiropractic care and the hope that it can provide. Huebner and his wife, who are the parents of three, faced what he calls “the perfect storm” with the birth of their second daughter, Rachel. This included a stressful prenatal experience and heart complications, among other things. Rachel spent a week in the newborn intensive care unit. These complications lead to chronic ear infections and sensory challenges, including sensitivity to loud noises, sensitivity to changes in environment, and sensitivity to materials and textures. Seeing the hope that this specialized form of care brought to his daughter and their family lead Huebner to focus on prenatal care, infants, toddlers, and children in general.

M.M.A., or mixed martial arts, is defined as a contact sport that allows for a wide range of fighting techniques, including striking, kicking, and grappling. Managing pain and injury from this intense sport was one of the paths that lead Huebner to his chiropractic practice. “I started in high school with tae kwon do and, as I got into college, I expanded what I was doing and wanted to compete. Unfortunately, a few of those injuries prevented me from competing. Then, when I got into chiropractic college, I didn’t have time to do a lot of extra training,” he says. Though injury and lack of time may have prevented him from competing in the past, Huebner isn’t one to give up. “Now I’m just a kickboxer, just punches and kicks, no wrestling. Currently, I train five days a week, one hour per day,” he says. “I’ve been training again this past year for an unsanctioned fight coming up here in just a few weeks.”

A Patient’s View Both Jo Taylor and Lauren Thomas are patients at New Hope; Taylor for the past year, and Thomas since April of this year. “When I injured myself while working out,” Taylor says, “I scheduled an appointment and Dr. Dana got me right in and learned I had a rib out of place.” Thomas’ first contact was for a prenatal massage. “After learning about the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy, I started seeing Dr. Huebner. … When my son was born in May, both he and my daughter began receiving chiropractic care as well,” Thomas says. Huebner understands that a different approach must be utilized to really get to the heart of the concerns. “Seeing Dr. Dana every week has been a huge benefit,” Taylor says. “We are a family of athletes, so there is never a shortage of ailments. Having consistent care is huge. Dr. Dana and Lacie really make it feel like a family environment.” “I love the family atmosphere at New Hope,” says Thomas. She also credits the care she received at New Hope for a more comfortable pregnancy. “I also believe that chiropractic care may have played a part in saving me from another round of postpartum depression, which I suffered after my first child was born,” she says. “Our pediatrician had some concerns about our newborn son that were immediately resolved after his first adjustment by Dr. Dana. This made me, and my husband, firm believers in the benefits of chiropractic care.” An experience with one of his daughters prompted Huebner to specialize in pediatric care.

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

A Family Focus Not only does Huebner focus on family when it comes to his patients, he also has his entire office designed to be family-oriented, and that includes his own family. “Lacie plays all the roles,” Huebner says of his wife, “office manager, front desk, and massage therapist. She kind of runs the show.” The office’s staff is composed of another massage therapist who specializes in traditional massage, as well as cranial sacral fascia techniques, which focuses on infants facing challenges such as lip ties or tongue ties. Two chiropractic assistants hold down the front of the office. “Baby holding and playing with kids is a big part of their job,” says Huebner. Everything at New Hope Chiropractic is designed to be family friendly, from short wait times to a toy room, to a mother’s room for breastfeeding, to available snacks and drinks. Every detail has been covered, down to the baby-proofed office, complete with padded furniture corners and outlet covers. “Moms can take a deep breath for a minute. Stay, hang out, have a cup of coffee, talk with whoever is at the front desk. We want kids and families to feel at home here,” Huebner says. He doesn’t limit the hope to only families and children within his practice; he also spreads hope to people and organizations around the world. New Hope has sponsored multiple mission trips to Guatemala, and 100% of the revenue from new patient exams goes to supporting young people as they travel to Guatemala to build schools or teach English. Locally, New Hope has provided recreational equipment, such as basketball nets and tether balls, to community organizations. When it comes to giving back, Huebner is also a part of an international professional organization called the Pediatric Chiropractors. This is a U.S.-based team of prenatal and pediatric chiropractors from all over the world, including Canada, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia, with the mission of changing the tone of chiropractic care. Thomas agrees with that mission. “We have experienced better health, improved immunity, and quicker recovery from illness and stress response as a result of chiropractic care.” “It’s not just a quick fix for your back. We can actually positively impact people’s life and health.” Huebner says of the group. “Our motto is ‘Hope Dealers.’ We give people hope that they don’t have to have chronic struggles. Hope, answers help — that’s what we always strive to provide.”

Family is what it’s all about at New Hope Chiropractic in Shawnee.

Living

Suburban Urban New luxury apartments now located in the heart of Shawnee. story by Jill Dutton | photography by Kevin Anderson

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

“We knew that when we built this (Sixty16), that what we wanted was to create a place where any age (resident) would feel comfortable.” —Kevin Tubbesing

A

new living space in downtown Shawnee contains crisp and shiny amenities: high-end apartments, a workout space, and a secluded community garden that’s perfect for relaxing or a gathering of friends. Developer Kevin Tubbesing is a longtime part of the Shawnee business community. Tubbesing and his wife, Dawn, along with a group of investors, have led the way in revitalizing downtown Shawnee with the Stag’s Creek development on Shawnee Mission Parkway, which includes the Stag’s Creek Professional Center with Shawnee’s first underground parking. Now the group has added to the portfolio a living space: The Sixty16 luxury apartments are situated north of Shawnee Mission Parkway and east of Nieman Road. While COVID kept the complex from hosting an official grand opening, the first occupants moved in in May. Offering a unique living situation, Sixty16 caters to a variety of tenants. “We have young 20s, we have seniors, and lots in the middle. We knew that when we built this, that what we wanted was to create a place where any age would feel comfortable,” Tubbesing says. “Frankly, you don’t see that blend in a lot of other apartment complexes. Usually, you have either the young, sexy place that isn’t as attractive to seniors, or you have places that are just known as being for 55 and older. I feel as if we have pulled off the beautiful blend that I was hoping for, which is to have this wonderful community that is all over the place.”

Suburban Urban When asked, “Why Shawnee?” Tubbesing says, “That’s easy. We live here.” On a mission to “move through and fix the area,” the developer started with Stag’s Creek— their mother development that included removing the pawnshop and dilapidated retail on Shawnee Mission Parkway. Part of the appeal of Sixty16, Tubbesing says, is the smaller number of units. “It’s a 67-unit complex, which makes it much smaller than a lot of the classic complexes that had been built in the area. Typically, a complex is going to be 180 to 250 units,” he says. “And that, of course, just brings a mass of bodies and people into one space. Some people would rather have a more quaint, community feel. “And when we started looking at this project, what spoke to us was the ability to create a smaller, but still a Class A project. We have more green space per capita than almost any other apartment complex in Kansas City.” Class A properties are generally new, include higher-end amenities, and are situated in a desirable location. At Sixty16, the units contain LG appliances, washer and dryer units, stainless steel appliances, high ceilings, granite countertops, and tile flooring. Plus, the complex offers a gym and workout area, gardens, and community gathering spaces with grills and tables. It is also pet-friendly.

19

20

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

With more green space than most apartment complexes, Sixty16 has provided an area where residents can relax, commune with nature, or share time with friends and family.

Just a few months after opening, the complex is almost half full. Most of the smaller units are filled—the studio and one-bedroom apartments—but the two-bedroom units are available for small families or single occupants wanting an office space for remote work. Tubbesing also thinks the two bedrooms are ideal for “couples, roommates, or the grandmother who wants the grandkids to be able to spend the night.” “I think Stag’s Creek was one of the things that was the impetus for the redevelopment of downtown. And now with Sixty16, we’re proud to be a part of the continued revitalization of downtown.” A Garden Oasis Rather than a swimming pool, Sixty16 has a relaxing garden area, perfect for family gatherings or quiet time amid the foliage and fountain. The gardens are new—“first generation” as Tubbesing calls it—with the plants still in development. The developers chose the gardens instead of a swimming pool because of the small number of tenants, but also to provide a unique hang-out space. Tenants can enjoy the seating areas in the gardens, grill on the gas grills, or plan a game-day get-together in the gazebo, which features a grill, lighting, outlets, and a large-screen television. Located on a graded hill on the back of the property and shielded from Nieman Road by the complex, the gardens and community space are a suburban escape in the midst of downtown Shawnee.

A

broad, beige sign hanging on the wall behind the desk in her office sums up all you need to know about Mill Valley High School principal Gail Holder. “Adventure Awaits”, it reads, and Holder probably had a good idea of what adventures awaited her when she accepted the position of principal in the fall of 2020. Jumping in as the leader of one of Kansas’ fastest-growing and most accomplished high schools just as a worldwide pandemic unfolded would be a steep challenge for the most adept of educators. Despite the difficult circumstances, Holder, the Mill Valley administration, staff, and student body seemed to thrive during the last school year, establishing high standards in classrooms and winning multiple state championships in both athletics and academics. “It really worked out great,” Holder says of the 2020–2021 school year. “(The COVID-19 pandemic) provided all of us an opportunity to practice problem-solving skills, practice adaptability. It seemed as though the world was struggling, but we continued to thrive and excel. “I like to focus on the things we learned during the pandemic, such as not taking connections for granted,” Holder says. “People call them soft skills, but I call them hard skills, because you can’t get through life without them.” With all the obstacles presented by COVID over the last year, Holder says she takes great pride in all that Mill Valley students were

able to accomplish. Students were in classrooms for the entire school year, except for three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not only did the school commence with all its sports and academic activities, but Jaguar athletes and academics won state championships in football, golf, dance, journalism and boys’ track. For Holder, it simply was another of life’s adventures. “I like to do hard things, keep myself unbalanced,” she says. Holder has been a go-getter from her days growing up as the oldest of five in Olathe. The family was close and put high values on education, achievements, and maintaining a positive outlook. Indeed, she surrounds herself with positivity in her office at Mill Valley— more signs reading “Make Today Amazing,” “This Is My Happy Place” and “Inspire” figure prominently. She knew she wanted to be an educator upon graduating from Olathe South High School. She earned an associate’s degree from Kilgore College in Texas and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Kansas. She also earned an administrative certification from Pittsburg State and a doctorate in education from Baker University. Holder’s career as an educator started at Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Kansas, before she moved closer to home to teach dance at Shawnee Mission West. A year later, she returned to teach at her alma mater, Olathe South, where she stayed 25 years before taking

She missed the direct impact she could make on students and, two years later, in 2018, she assumed the role of assistant principal at Olathe East. During her time teaching and administrating in Olathe, Holder struck up a strong friendship with Marilyn Chrisler, associate principal and activities director at Mill Valley. When longtime principal Toby Waldeck announced he would retire at the end of the 2019–2020 school year, Chrisler made a phone call to her friend of 25 years, someone she knew would be perfect for the job. “I knew her work ethic, and I knew she has a passion to do what’s best for kids,” Chrisler says. “We have a lot in common as far as our mindset. She makes people better; she’s going to push you. “Mill Valley was already a great high school, but I knew she was going to make it even better.” Holder is quick to point out that the focus of her master’s degree was curriculum and instruction, and that background goes a long way

toward describing her philosophy when it comes to educating today’s youth. Take care of the academic part of the high school experience, and the rest—extracurricular activities like dance, debate, and athletics—will follow. “I want us to be seen as academic leaders,” she says. “It’s like Starbucks. They do coffee. I want our brand to be that focused. At the end of the day, we excel because we’re an academic institution.” Holder laughingly refers to herself as “a flavor.” She might be seen by some as too tough or demanding. She prides herself on her toughness and insists that students should be stretched to their highest potential. “First and foremost, I believe all students can learn,” she says. “But how students learn does not always look traditional. “I believe we have the most important job in the world, but with that comes great responsibility. My expectations are high to move students forward. I believe the trajectory of a student’s life changes without a high school diploma. That diploma is the most important piece of paper a person can have. “You won’t find anyone who works harder or cares more about students and their education.”

A PERSONAL

CANCER

JOURNEY After diagnosis and treatment, Shawnee woman knows she’s one of the lucky ones. stor y by Beth Kor negay photographs cour tesy F ight CRC

Three little words can change your life. When I heard “You have cancer,” shockwaves coursed through my body even though I was still partially under anesthetic. I’d gone in for what I thought was my first routine colonoscopy two days after Christmas in 2013. After additional testing, I was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer at age 50. The next several weeks seemed like a blur: a multitude of additional tests, wading through insurance documents, searching for an oncologist, notifying my co-workers, and, perhaps the most difficult, making calls to my dad wintering in Texas and my adult son in California. The next year now seems like a distant memory with radiation and chemotherapy treatments, surgeries, emergency hospital admittances, doctor visits, and trying to continue to work full-time in order to maintain my health insurance along with some sense of normalcy. Thankfully, my husband of just one year, James, was at my side the entire time, often shouldering the weight of my diagnosis himself. He became my nurse and connection to the outside world as I recuperated on the couch in the living room for months, not knowing what the next day would bring.

Courtney Maurer

Rachel Moore

My body did not exhibit any symptoms of colon cancer such as weight loss, bloating, family history, or blood in my stool. My surgeon said the size of my tumor was roughly the size of my fist, and it had likely been growing inside of me for 10 years. I went through some genetic testing to see if I could pass colon cancer to my son and thankfully those results did not show a genetic component. I just had bum luck, as my doctor said. After my treatments ended and my final surgery was completed, I began to regain my strength, and my hair grew back after losing it to the chemo treatments. In many ways, I felt as though I needed to make up the time that cancer had taken from me. I delved back into work again, continued my volunteer activities with the Shawnee Police Department and other organizations, and went back to freelance writing. I rekindled relationships with friends who didn’t know if I was going to survive; in 2014, Stage III colon cancer only had about a 35% five-year survival rate. As life got back to normal for me, I grew increasingly thankful for my recovery. I had beaten the odds and my prognosis continues to be excellent. Last year, I was released from my oncologist’s care. I realize I’m one of the lucky ones. When I felt alone and isolated during my treatment and recovery, I turned to online community support groups. I suddenly went from feeling like no one could relate to my struggles to being in a position to offer hope to newly diagnosed patients. That initial shock and devastation of a cancer diagnosis were still fresh in my mind, but I had also

successfully navigated life-changing surgeries and treatments and had come out the other side. Many newly diagnosed patients fear they won’t survive, and I was happy to be able to give them hope. I discovered the passion to help raise awareness about colon cancer. Two colon cancer organizations stood out to me, and I began volunteering for both. I became a “buddy” for newly diagnosed colon cancer patients who asked to be matched with a survivor through the Colon Cancer Alliance (www. CCAlliance.org). I also wrote articles about survivors who agreed to share their story for the organization. In 2018, I initiated a proclamation that was signed by then-Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer during Colon Cancer Awareness Month. During the signing ceremony, Colyer told me that his brother died of colon cancer, so he knows how important screening is. I have continued to push to have that Kansas proclamation signed each March, which is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. In 2020, I was named an ambassador for Fight CRC (colorectal cancer; www.FightCRC.org), an organization that works both to increase awareness and to put faces with the disease by using ambassadors from around the United States. We were encouraged to tell our story to each other and then to larger audiences. In March this year, I was interviewed by local television reporter Matt Stewart, who himself had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2020. Sharing his story on television, he said his wife encouraged him to get a colonoscopy after rectal bleeding, a move that potentially saved his life. I shared my story as well, including

my lack of symptoms and, if I hadn’t followed medical screening colonoscopy guidelines, my outcome would have likely been different. Also in March, my image along with the other Fight CRC ambassadors appeared on a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square. Those images of men and women of all ages and races impacted by colon cancer vividly illustrated that the disease can truly affect anyone. That month also brought virtual lobbying efforts with Washington, D.C., representatives of Kansas politicians including senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran as well as Representative Sharice Davids. Two other Kansas ambassadors and I shared our stories and asked for funding for colon cancer research. Our focus was on the children in our group who have not survived their battle. Last year, guidelines for initial colon cancer screening were lowered from age 50 to age 45. Sadly, this reflects the number of younger patients being diagnosed. Through the groups and organizations I am associated with, I have seen children as young as 11 years old who have been diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. It truly is not just an “old person’s disease,” and it is even more heartbreaking to see children suffer through colon cancer until their bodies can no longer battle the cancer or tolerate the treatments.

Standing alongside Beth Kornegay as 2021 ambassadors for Fight CRC are three other Kansas residents, all hailing from Overland Park. It was 2017 and at 29, Courtney Maurer had just been diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer. “I think forming relationships at Fight CRC is important, and it’s kind of like a support system and family. I fight for others who are going through what I went through, and for the caregivers. I also fight for myself since I was young when diagnosed. I want to be an advocate and spread awareness so others can prevent this cancer,” Maurer says. Rachel Moore was 28 when she received the same diagnosis. “I’m a wife, mother, and business owner whose life was flipped upside down with a very unexpected diagnosis. I work very hard to not only spread my message of early detection on my blog (www.shitsandgigglesinkc.com), but also of the power of positivity,” Moore says. “I believe my outlook and a strong sense of hope have helped my treatments be successful. I also come from a unique story in that of my high school graduating class of 250 students, five of us have been diagnosed with CRC all under the age of 40. We are currently working to find out why this unusual and troubling situation has occurred.” Greg Vaughn heard the news when he was 48. “I fight for those who need hope, encouragement, and the warrior mindset to win another day,” Vaughn says. “I’m very passionate about not letting stage IV colorectal cancer keep me from enjoying life. I’m a pilot, a professional photographer who chases storms, a former professional cyclist, and I’ve run 97 marathons and 17 ultra-marathons of 100 miles or more. I’m not about to let cancer scare me or keep me from doing what I love. I strongly believe that by sharing my story and experiences, I will encourage others to stay strong and never give up their own fight.”

estled in the heart of western Shawnee, complete with 16 acres of wooded trails adjoining Shawnee Mission Park, sits Twin Mill Farm, a horse-boarding facility with centuries of history dating back to the Louisiana Purchase. “Being closer to the city or suburbs, further in, and having that access to places to ride is fairly unique,” says Courtney Nelson, who took over the farm from her parents in 1996. Her husband, John, became involved a few years later. The property has had an equine focus since the 1960s when Virginia Hamill and her husband, Dr. Robert Hamill, purchased land that had previously been a dairy farm. Chip and Becky Newcomer, Nelson’s parents, then bought the horse-boarding site in 1990. The wooded trails, Nelson says, are among the facility’s main draws.

p h o t o g r a p hy b y K e v i n A n d e r s o n

It also features a cross-country course and a plethora of artwork, largely designed by Nelson herself. Nelson’s father taught her to weld, and the horse wall that can be seen on top of a retaining wall is her creation from 1995. Its intent was to “create a dynamic fence overlooking the pasture,” according to the farm’s website. The pieces on display throughout the property add to the interest for people walking, driving, or biking past the farm, Nelson says. “It’s fun community outreach, and something we love that we can share with people around us,” she says. As of mid-August, 31 horses were boarded at the farm. Owners are from Shawnee, as well as other Kansas metro cities, including Lenexa, Overland Park, Kansas City, and Parkville. “We’re all busy, and sometimes it’s hard enough to find an hour or two to see your horse and, if

32

you’ve got to drive an hour to get there, (it) turns into an all-day event,” Nelson says. Sally Simonsen got her first horse, Buck, when she was 16, and he has been a mainstay at Twin Mill. Now 26, Buck, with the exception of the four years Simonsen attended college in Colorado and Buck went with her, has been a consistent presence in Shawnee. “I think I had found (Twin Mill Farm) on the internet just looking up boarding barns. … Courtney has always been amazing,” Simonsen says. “She’s great. I’ve boarded at other boarding facilities and feel like no one takes as good a care of my horse as she does.” Margaret Shelby has boarded horses at Twin Mill off and on for two decades, having met Nelson and her mother, Becky, through a friend. “Becky and Courtney were amazingly helpful and encouraging,” Shelby says. “Becky is gone now, but I feel her presence whenever I’m there, often just a fleeting moment, but I say, ‘Oh, there’s Becky.’” Despite being in more of an urban area, Shelby says Twin Mill Farm feels like it’s in the country. “You can really see the sky,” Shelby says. “I live in Waldo, so I don’t get to see ‘big sky’ at home. But at the same time, if you want to, at Twin Mill you can wander up among the trees in the woods on the trails and feel very secluded indeed. It’s really a great barn for all kinds of rides.” Shelby currently boards her horse, Peanut, at the farm. “A young rider from the barn had gone to college and wasn’t getting to use him much, so I started riding him,” Shelby says. “My own boy had to be retired due to an injury, so I had nothing to

ride. He is fine now and enjoys his retirement; he’s just not rideable. So Peanut was great in that he was already at Twin Mill, everyone knew him and his history, and he was and is super sweet and easy.” The draws for Simonsen are the atmosphere and the property connecting to the 1,250-acre Shawnee Mission Park and its equestrian trails. “It’s been wonderful,” she said. “I boarded at probably four or five other places while I was in Colorado and no place came even close to Twin Mill.” In addition to caring for horses, Simonsen says a group of riders often get together to go horse camping or ride together on the property. “It’s kind of given (me) a second home out there,” she says. “It’s given me a great group of friends, someone who kind of shares that common interest.” For Shelby, that kind of common interest goes beyond just riding. “The night, several years ago, I had to put my gelding down, Courtney was my rock,” Shelby says. “It was among the worst nights of my life, but I remember Courtney being there, making sure I understood what all the veterinarians were telling me. It was a long, awful night but she stayed with me. That’s the sort of people they are.” Nelson and others have modified the property over the years, partly due to changes in weather patterns that expanded the floodplain. Amenities also include a lighted sand arena and a round pen for training. The farm, according to Nelson, also has moved toward a “pastureboard facility.” “We have and continue to spend time beautifying our area,” Nelson says.

Courtney and John Nelson treat their equine boarders—and their owners—like family.
