We have a lot to be proud of here in Shawnee. The Chamber and the City along with the Economic Development Council and the Convention & Visitors Bureau have a strong partnership in building a stronger, sounder community everyday and I am very proud to be part of it. Over a century ago we were seen as the land of new beginnings as settlers nurtured crops in the fertile soil they found here. The dictionary defines a community as “A unified body of individuals” and though I doubt Webster was ever in Shawnee, if he dropped by today he would discover that his definition really does hit the mark here. With over 154 years of history, we appreciate our deep roots and as one of the fastest growing communities in the Midwest, we are a good place to do business, a good place to raise a family, and a good place call home. Today, Shawnee workers and residents enjoy the good life in a suburban setting. Joe Earnshaw was the first, non-Native American child born in Shawnee on April 14, 1865, the same day President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

Shawnee Town A must-see stop for history buffs. Shawnee Town is an outdoor museum, interpreting small-town, rural life from the 1920s. Stroll through the museum and visit the building and grounds, featuring a home, barn, school, post office, chapel, fire station, various businesses and gardens.

Begin your day with a morning jog or family stroll through this crown jewel of Johnson County parks. With 1,250 acres of fun for every season, you can take your pick of activities – fishing on the 140-acre lake, canoeing, golfing, paddle boating – name it and you can do it here. On a clear summer evening, there is nothing like a picnic and a musical at Theatre in the Park.
The Parks and Recreation Department oversees more than 563 acres of beautiful city parks, Shawnee Town, the Civic Centre and the City’s two state of the art aquatic facilities. They also offer over 500 classes, programs and host a variety of special events throughout the year for all ages including youth, adults and seniors.

f you are hungry for a little lunch and a lot of shopping, Shawnee is in the center of it all. Shawnee offers a unique array of family entertainment, dining and shopping venues. Pick up a great gift from The Doll Cradle, Encore or Nigro’s Western Wear. Take a drive over to Oak Park Mall, (10 minutes) where you will find all of your favorite national stores like Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Dillard’s, plus some specialty shops and restaurants. The world-famous County Club Plaza is only 20 minutes away, and the destination shopping of The Legends at Village West and Oak Park Mall are within 10 minutes of Shawnee.

Downtown Boasts a
new facelift
A
lthough so much growth is taking place on the western edge of the city, Shawnee is also seeing another area primed for take-off. Revitalization efforts have been taking place under the guidance of the Shawnee Downtown Partnership, which grew out of a 2002 effort to reinvent the downtown economy according to a shared community vision. One of the group’s goals is to bring more people to the downtown area by adding more specialty retail, unusual restaurants, cultural attractions and entertainment venues. Today, attractive stone signs make it clear to visitors when they have entered downtown Shawnee – an area centered on the main thoroughfares of Johnson Drive, Neiman Road and Shawnee Mission Parkway. Additionally, the six block downtown interior along Johnson Drive sports new landscaping, benches, trash receptacles, small plaza and fountain in front of City Hall along with decorative lighting. This start of a roughly $2 million Downtown Streetscape Project has developed into an additional $36 million in capital investment for the downtown area. The entrance to the city celebrates the trail history and creates a visual gateway with its recently opened Pioneer Crossing Park on Shawnee Mission Parkway, surrounded by landscaped hillside and an original sculpture of a wagon train crossing a creek. St. Patrick’s Parade & Duck Race
Sunday, March 14th Downtown Shawnee. The Annual Shawnee St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the Sunday prior to St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). The parade starts on Johnson Drive at Monrovia and marches east to King Street, beginning at 1 p.m. The Annual Great Duck Race is immediately after the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Plastic ducks are raced beginning at 4:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Shawnee Sister Cities program.

The Shawnee Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) functions as a division of the Chamber of Commerce with a Shawnee employee as CVB manager. A committee of volunteers from hospitality-related businesses, city government and attractions works to promote and advance the cause of tourism in the community-hotels, attractions, restaurants and other, related businesses to make a positive economic impact. Members are appointed by the Mayor after a recommendation from the full committee and then submitted to the City Council for its approval. The CVB functions as the face of the city by hosting hospitality and welcoming tents at all major events and celebrations throughout the year. The recently-upgraded Website, www. GoodStartsHere.com, is the primary resource for tourism information about the city. Requests generated thru the Website as well as other sources for tourism and relocation information, group tours and hotel requests are handled by staff. Emphasis is placed on joint partnerships and co-op marketing efforts with both state and regional tourism agencies and alliances. Jack Waters received the first “Good Starts Here Award” for outstanding service to Shawnee Tourism in May 2009, Ann Zimmerman presented the award.

The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce is a membership business organization creating, servicing and preserving the best possible business climate and quality of life for the Shawnee area since 1946. Branding The Chamber and the City of Shawnee joined forces along with other community stakeholders in 2008 to develop a brand for the community. Branding is much more than just a new logo, simple tag line or slogan. Branding conjures up an image at the mere mention of the city’s name. It’s goal is to appeal and entice visitors, residents, the creative class, economic development, the arts, a better education system - everything that makes a city sustainable and desirable. Shawnee Tomorrow Leadership membership
Shawnee Tomorrow is a community leadership development program founded in 1989 by the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. The goal is to continuously develop individuals with the willingness, desire and capabilities to assume leadership roles within the Shawnee community, Johnson County, the state of Kansas and beyond. Shawnee Tomorrow is a leadership training program that is designed to equip a select group of individuals who live or work within the Shawnee area with leadership tools and an understanding of the issues facing the area. The program consists of eight sessions, each devoted to a specific theme affecting our community. Upon completion of the program, participants will have had the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the community and the critical issues. Over 220 individuals have graduated from the program with many serving the community in various elected positions in the city, county and state along with boards and appointed committees in the community.
Ambassadors Ambassadors are dedicated to active participation in Shawnee Chamber events and programs. Ambassadors serve as hosts for luncheons, facilitate networking, coffees and ribbon cuttings of the Chamber along with providing support to the staff. Ambassadors serve as the active communication link to cultivate and promote a positive relationship between the Chamber members, the City and the community at large.

Downtown Impact Award The Downtown Impact Award was created to recognize the business development project(s), which have the greatest impact on the City of Shawnee’s downtown area. The Betty Charlton Scholarship Fund What began by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Shawnee Chamber in 1997 as a tribute to Betty Charlton has grown to over $40,000. Betty served as the Chamber Assistant for five years and while not a highranking player in local affairs; she was a popular figure in the city, chamber and church circles and was often referred to as the “Mother of Shawnee.” The Scholarship Fund now awards one or two $1,500 scholarships each spring to students who have demonstrated an involvement in community leadership. Each and every year a portion of the proceeds from the Chamber Annual Dinner auction directly benefits the Betty Charlton Scholarship fund and continues to support future community leadership. Scholarships totaling $19,000 have been awarded to area high school seniors over the last 12 years.
