Holiday Attractions

Immortalize it!

It’s that time of year in Lawrence! Take a leisurely walk down Massachusetts Street to enjoy the holiday light displays and decorated storefronts. Cap off you stroll with a warm drink and some people watching. The benches outside of Liberty Hall are an ideal spot to sit, sip and watch the world go by.

winter 2012

Don your best winter jacket and snap a photo in front of KU’s Gothic-style Snow Hall. Named for Francis H. Snow, KU’s first professor of natural sciences, its fifth chancellor and the scientist who discovered a fungus to eradicate chinch bugs. (No small feat as you don’t hear much about the little critters who make quick work of the average lawn.) Snow Hall houses the departments of Mathematics and Economics, architecture studies and, appropriately enough, the environmental studies program—maybe you’ll even find some super-sharp environmental studies students emerging from Snow Hall who can tell you the chances for snow in the coming years.

Models:

Maggie Swanston (snow woman) and Jeff Simpson (biker friend). Swanston’s winter coat provided by Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop. Thanks to Pearson Collision Repair, La Prima Tazza, Liberty Hall, the University of Kansas and Oread Hotel for providing photo shoot venues.

The snow used in this shoot

was Sno-Wonder, a nontoxic, bio-degradable theatrical snow. Lawrence Magazine suspects the snow angel Swanston created outside Allen Fieldhouse will certainly bring good luck this winter basketball season, but for best results add generous amounts of your own snow angels at the first sign of snow.
