Homemade, the very best brand of gifts F i ve i d e a s t h at w o n’ t b r e a k t h e b a n k , b u t w i l l i m p r e s s t h e r e c i p i e n t s CHEESY Put together a small hamper containing a jar of green preserved figs, a wedge of cheese (vacuum packed is best), some nuts, dried fruit or a jar of chutney. Add a packet of oat biscuits or any savoury biscuit. Pack onto a wooden board, wrap in cellophane and tie up with string or raffia. SWEETIE PIE Take a glass jar with a lid and half fill with caramelised condensed milk. Top this with an equal amount of chocolate hazelnut spread. Seal. Add marshmallows and a packet of Marie biscuits and you have the kit for delicious fireside S’mores. SAUCY SALADS Make up a jar of homemade salad dressing and include the recipe. Add a bottle of balsamic, rice wine or apple cider vinegar and a good local olive oil to the mix. Take 100ml olive oil, add 1 clove of crushed garlic, 5ml (1 tsp) readymade Dijon mustard, a pinch of chilli flakes (optional), a pinch of mixed herbs or 15ml (1 tbsp) fresh
chopped herbs and 25ml of water. Shake together well. Pour in 100ml of vinegar. Seal. For extra flavour, add one onion finely sliced in rings. Store in the fridge. Include beautiful organic produce like lettuce, avocado, tomatoes, peppers and a cucumber. MEATY AND MANLY Clean an empty 400g tin, remove the label and ensure there are no sharp edges. Decorate with some fabric, string or buttons and glue the items onto the tin. Fill with a selection of biltong, salami or other smoked meat sticks. Add toothpicks tied together and wrap in cellophane or a new decorative dish cloth. THE BAKER You can never have enough wooden spoons or spatulas. Take a pair of new oven gloves and fill one with a set of wooden spoons, the other with spatulas in different sizes. Add a favourite baking recipe, then wrap and tie with raffia or string. Add a sprig of fresh rosemary on top. Hilary Biller 7
