Finding the Right Rental in Boston can be difficult. With so many neighborhoods it can be hard to pick the right one for you. Here is the rundown: Looking for a larger student community? Try Allston or Brighton. Willing to pay more? Look at Fenway or Kenmore. Interested in more ‘proper’ living? Try Beacon Hill, Back Bay, or the North End. Irish Blooded? Check out South Boston or the up-and-coming Seaport. No matter where you are looking, here are our tips for finding the place perfect for you. 10. Take your time. You may fall in love with the first property you view, however it is important to take your time. If you still love the first property after looking at five others; consider it your new home. 9. Plan your search It’s as easy as ABC: • Area – outline potential areas you would like to reside. • Budget – stick to your budget; don’t waste time looking at properties out of your price range. • Criteria – do you want a garden? Are separate bathrooms a must? Make sure you identify what you need in your property. 8. Think about the best deal. Consider the real value of extra facets: having a garden may cost you slightly more money, but come summertime, you may find it invaluable. 7. Don’t be a sheep. You don’t have to follow the crowd. The less “in” the area, the better the deal. 6. Break clause. You need an exit strategy in case your rental ends up unsuitable. A six month break clause will give you an escape option. 5. Furnished or unfurnished? The unfurnished option allows flexibility in decoration; however, don’t forget it can be expensive to furnish a property and you have to take the items with you when you leave. 4. Put in an offer. Landlords typically ask a higher price for a property than what it may actually be worth. Don’t be afraid to offer less than the asking price but avoid being too cheeky. 3. Hidden extras. Keep some cash aside for unforeseen costs such as a parking permit or television license. 2. Reliable roommates. Make sure your personalities gel, you have similar requirements and they are reliable with payments. 1. Sign the lease. If sharing, all parties should sign the lease – you don’t want anyone leaving you in the lurch with a lease agreement that is solely in your name.

The historic Boston Common is one of the best places to spend a summer day, and this summer it’s scheduled for a makeover. After the renovation, the Common will have patio tables, umbrellas, an outdoor piano player, and even WiFi access. The renovation is an attempt to transform the Common beyond grass and concrete elements. The makeover is even said to include a reading room, complete with magazines and books to pass the hazy summer days. Looks like I know where to spend my summer!

Roof Decks

v

In the roofdeck vs. patio smackdown, there are no real losers. But if they got in the ring, which outdoor venue would throw the one-two punch? Here are a few of Sumo’s favorite outdoor drinking and dining spots in Boston.

Contestant 1: The Rattlesnake (382 Boylston St :: (617) 859-7772)

The Rattlesnake lives in the heart of Boston, just off the Common. Stop in for a bite of their famous Mexican from Poe’s Kitchen. We recommend the trio of guacomole to share with friends ($9.75). Then head up to the roof deck for cocktails like the Asian Pear Margarita, made with Patron, cointreau, Asian pear syrup and Chinese fice-spice salt rim ($12). (courtesy of Poe’s Kitchen at the Rattlesnake)

Contestant 2: The Baseball Tavern (1270 Boylston Street :: (617) 867-6526)

Too poor for Red Sox tickets but rich enough for a beer? Head over to Baseball Tavern and listen in to the game live just steps away. Feel like you are there with the Taverns mini version of the Green Monster. Grab a Tavern Twin Hot Dog Basket ($9) and a Bud Light for added effect. (courtesy of The Baseball Tavern)

Contestant 3: Atlantic Beer Garden (ABG) (146 Northern Avenue :: (617) 357-8000)

Head over to the Seaport any day of the week during the summer and dive right into the Atlantic... Beer Garden that is. Enjoy the scenery on the roof deck, but be warned: If you want access to the deck you must get there early as a line accumulates pretty quickly. Blame it on the views and the great service. (courtesy of Atlantic Beer Garden)

vs

Patios Contestant 1: The Draft (34 Harvard Avenue :: (617) 783-9400)

Big groups, sports fans, and Allstonians meet at the newly renovated bar for great beers on draft and a surprisingly wide variety of tasty food. The Draft is Sumo’s first pick for a warm summer evening on a patio. Play bags on the back patio and sit under umbrellas with friends and a cold pitcher. Mellow atmosphere, plenty of high table seating, and live music. (courtesy of Draft Bar and Grill)

Contestant 2: Charlies Beer Garden (10 Eliot Street :: (617) 492-9646)

Walk through the gates of beer heaven and take an outdoor seat. Charlies Beer Garden is perfect for large groups of friends. Cruise through a tasting of world-wide beers. Some domestic, some international, some you can’t even pronounce. Perfect for no frills drinking. (courtesy of Flickr user AntyDiluvian)

Contestant 3: Sweetwater Tavern (146 Northern Avenue :: (617) 357-8000)

Nothing says day drinking like Sweetwater Tavern. The alleyway bar located just outside of Emerson College is ideal for small groups looking to split a pitcher, or 5. Cozy up and spend the day. Order some nachos or try their Aioli laced veggie burger on the side. (courtesy of Atlantic Beer Garden)

The #winner of the roof deck vs patio showdown? Everyone, because who doesn’t like drinking outside? Each one have their own characteristics but all will undoubtedly be a good time.

Crawl in Boston Ultimate Summer Crawl The nice weather is finally here, and everyone is ready to play! Here is Crawl in Boston’s guide to the best stops on a summer bar crawl.

Stop 1: The Point

147 Hanover St :: (617) 523-7020

Stop in for the history, stay for the $2 Bud Light drafts! The Point is close to the T and has good pub food, which makes it a great meeting point (pun intended) to start your crawl. Stop 2: Red Sky

16 North Steet :: (617) 742-3333

With a patio outside, and a lounge with couches next to a huge open window inside, Red Sky is great for your next stop. Be sure to try the raspberry mojito-it’s summer in a glass.

Stop 3: The Landing

1 Long Wharf :: (617) 227-4321

Stop 4: Hong Kong

65 Chatham Street :: (617) 227-2226

No bar crawl is complete without a stop at the Kong. They have the infamous Scorpion Bowl as well as meat on a stick. What more can you ask for?

This is a must-stop, since The Landing only exists in the summer time. Near the Aquarium, this outdoor bar is perfect for a summer crawl. They have whole list of frozen drinks and fish bowls.

Stop 5: Sanctuary

189 State Street :: (617) 573-9333

By now, night has fallen. Sanctuary offers three floors where you can dance (check out the pole dancing in the basement) or relax in the booths on the main floor. Check out their martini list, as well as their beers on tap.

Tasty Burger has become a sensation since it first opened and I must say, their burgers could be the best in the city. For all of us poor hungry college students their prices are excellent and their special, the Starving Student, is great. Ten bucks for a burger, fries, and Bud Light…sign me up! Their cheeseburger is fantastic and served in a buttery, toasted roll. The restaurant is set up in an old gas station and definitely has that classy 1950’s feel. The walls are decorated with classic Tarantino memorabilia including Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction sinking his teeth into “one tasty burger!” Their drink selection is basic but that’s what the whole restaurant is about, keeping it simple but delicious. Oh yeah, did I mention they have free pool? When I found out, my heart melted like the first bite into their spicy jalapeno burger. The staff is great and always there to make recommendations whether you’re a first time customer or trying to find you’re next favorite patty. Plus the pick-up window is open until 2 am every night. Tasty Burger you get two giant thumbs up.

Great Bar Food: The Penguin’s Wings!

Location: 735 Huntington Ave :: (617) 277-9200 Atmosphere: A- Food: A Drinks: A Service: A-

If you’re looking for some great wings, then look no further. The Penguin offers 15 cent wing night every Monday. The only catch is you have to order them in sets of 10 but honestly, you will be glad when you try these deep-fried wings from heaven. The Penguin is known for its amazing slices of pizza but these little birdy parts come in at a very close second. There is usually a line (I had to wait 35 minutes with 5 people) but their beer selection is worth it. The Penguin offers over 330 different types of beers from all over the world. If you, and your wallet, feel up to the challenge you can spend three bucks on a Penguin Passport. If you splurge for that, and for each one of their wordly beers, then the Penguin will give you your own 22oz mug with your personal inscription. This great college hangout is located on Mission Hill at the Brigham Circle T stop.

The Crossroads Pub

This gem from the Emerald Isle is hidden away at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Beacon Street. There are two floors; the first is a classy Irish Pub with a truly authentic feel. The second level is more of a dive bar with darts, a jukebox and separate kitchen area. Every day during the week they have some amazing specials but, Wednesday’s are prime. Each week they offer a free cheese pizza with every pitcher of beer you buy but there is a catch, you can only get it upstairs. Patrons pile in every week for one of their fourteen beers on tap and a fresh pie. You have to get their early because once they reach capacity there is “no free pizza for you!” The bartenders are constantly running around so it can be a bit difficult Location: 495 Beacon Street :: (617) 262-7371 to get a pitcher. Chinatown is one of the best spots in the city for some great cheap eats. Looks can be deceiving but Avana Sushi, located in a mini-mall a block away from the Orange Line T, is unbelievable. This is THE spot for cheap delicious sushi. They have amazing lunch specials for $6.50 which includes 8 rolls, miso soup and a small ginger salad. The Mango Crabmeat has fresh slices of the fruit and crab then coated with a sesame seasoning. Customers watch the Sushi chef immediately go to work. First, creating the outer wrap with rice and seaweed, then slicing each piece of crab or fish from a fresh filet. This is a secret hidden among the many locally owned shops and restaurants. Most dinner plates are only $7.50. They do not deliver but if you are craving some fine Asian cuisine for dirt cheap, this is a must.

Date Night Splurge Or Steal

by: Kendra Leavitt

Splurge Spot: Toro Tapas Restaurant 1704 Washington Street Boston, MA (617) 536 - 4300 http://www.toro-restaurant.com/

Steal Spot: Fajitas & ‘Ritas 25 West Street Boston, MA (617) 426 – 1222 http://www.fajitasandritas.com

Located in the South End, Toro is the perfect place to take your sweetie for a romantic date night. This restaurant, complete with table and bar seating, is dimly lit with the ambiance to set the lovey-dovey mood. Known for its traditional Barcelona-style tapas, or snacks, Toro has an exciting menu that is sure to impress your date. Though the fare is a bit on the pricey side, your taste buds will thank you. The drink menu boasts extensive options from wine, sherry, beers and inventive cocktails. If you don’t seem to find what you’re looking for on the menu, the friendly and knowledgeable bartenders will mix you the right poison to suit your palette. If you’re not sure what to start with, try the Patatas Bravas ($6), a plate of fried potatoes served with aioli and a spicy tomato sauce which is absolutely delectable. Toro also offers alternative menus such as vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free and nut-free options.

If you’re looking for a casual restaurant that’s not hard on the wallet, this is your place. Fajitas & ‘Ritas is a hidden gem near the Boston Common, serving up the best eats and drinks for cheap. This restaurant and bar features a mix of Texas and BBQ dishes, and a dangerously long list of tequilas. The atmosphere is vibrant and full of character with bold murals covering nearly every wall in the restaurant. Most dishes average around $7 to $10, but come packed with huge portions. Popular menu choices include quesadillas, burritos, nachos and fajitas, so your date should be comfortable with getting a little messy with their food. Fajitas & ‘Ritas are professionals when it comes to margaritas, with choices such as strawberry, raspberry, or mango flavors, available frozen or on the rocks. For first-timers, try the Chicken Fajita ($10) and wash it down with a Horney Blue Rita ($7).

Other Splurge Spots: The Melting Pot: Do date night a little differently with a menu based around cheese or chocolate fondue. 76 Arlington Street Boston, MA (617) 357 – 7007

Other Steal Spots: Eagles Deli & Restaurant: Eagles Deli is the best spot for a frugal date night with a menu featuring deli staples like sandwiches, wraps, burgers and dogs. 1918 Beacon Street Brighton, MA (617) 731 - 3232

Late Night Munchies by Hannah Poster

When it comes to late-night grub fests, we probably aren’t looking for the most high-quality, first class meal. All you really need is some grease, some sugar and probably some carbs to soak up all that alcohol. Here are some of Boston’s best late-night eats. Best Dessert: For those of you who would rather eat an apple pie than a pizza pie, be sure to check out Finale. Open until midnight on weekends, and with several locations including, Harvard Square and Coolidge corner, Finale is a great fix for your late-night sweet tooth. Finale features dessert classics such as crème brulee and hot fudge sundaes, as well as the heavenly butterscotch pudding (for those over 21, do yourself a favor and order the almond mocha hot toddy to go with it). Finale also features a variety of gluten and sugar-free treats. Best Classic Late-Night Joint: One of my main beefs with the city of Boston is their lack quality diners, but South St. Diner knows where it’s at. After a debaucherous night out downtown, nothing is better then the kitschy, art-deco inspired South St. Diner. Located right in the shadows of South Station and open 24 hours, 7 days a week, South St. Diner is guaranteed to fill your munchies-fix, no matter the time. What South St. Diner does best if their breakfast, from banana pancakes to the insanely good chocolate French toast. And if you want to keep your buzz on while dining, mimosas are served until 1 am. Best Pizza: After a long night out, sometimes nothing hits the spot like a big ol’ slice of pizza. Your best bet for late-night pizza in the AllstonBrighton area is Inbound Pizza. With a ton of thin-crust pizzas from the classic Margarita to the Mexican pizza, featuring hamburger, tomato, onion & jalapenos. Inbound also has a variety of sandwiches and paninis, including my favorite, the avocado and brie melt. And for those of you with a sweet tooth, Inbound has countless flavors of frozen yogurt, from peanut butter to Almond Joy. Best Late-Night Alternative: For those of you who are craving something a little healthier than greasy pizza or burgers, look no further than Falafel Corner in Harvard Square. In addition to serving some of the best traditional Greek and Middle-Eastern food in Boston, almost everything on the menu is under $10 and served fast. Be sure to try the lamb shawarma plate, or for the vegetarians out there, try the falafel roll-ups. With fresh veggies and healthy ingredients, a late-night snack at Falafel Corner can at least be one decision you won’t regret the next morning.

Get Some Fresh Air

By Janine Mitchell

The temperature’s rising, and so are the number of potential social outings. Days of going out and bundling up like an Eskimo, risking abandoning a glove, scarf and your favorite earmuffs are over! It’s time to put on your favorite worn-in pair of shorts, gulp a beer on a patio, and enjoy the great outdoors. If you’re willing to gas up a Zip Car, and take a trek out of the city, here are a few amusing trips to take with all your besties. Time to soak up the sun and treat your lungs to some fresh air. Float & Camp down the Saco River Saco, Maine Now, I can speak from experience this day may turn even the classiest of Bostonians into absolute drunken trash. But it’s worth it. Here’s how it goes: First choose your camping destination. There’s a bajillion campsites up there but my favorite party spot is definitely Fiddlehead Campground. They have tons of different places along the river to camp and start your float, depending on how long you want your day to be. Lots of people do this many different ways but here’s my best advice, and the story of my Saco River Adventure. First we got there in the morning, set up our tents and dropped our stuff off (only non valuables). Then one person drives everyone to the top of the river with kayaks, canoes, or floats, but most importantly alcohol. We had a floatie boat filled with ice, just for our 30 rack. You will not be judged if you do the same. Then you just float down the river, get a tan, and drink all day long. There’s a few different lengths of the float, you can do the one that’s between 2-3 hours or go hardcore and endure 5-6 hours of river drinking. Once you get to your campsite you just change, cook out and sit by a bonfire all night. The best part about it is there’s TONS of people doing the exact same thing so it’s an ideal opportunity to get shwasted with randoms and make tons of friends. Hike the New Hampshire Mountains Looking for a leisurely day trip? Head up north to New Hampshire’s seacoast and hike the Hedgehog Mountain Loop in Albany, NH. This is said to be perfect for the casual hiker with tons of stunning views to offer. The hike is perfect for a little couples retreat or those looking for an introduction to hiking. If you want something extreme, go all out and hike one of the east coast’s highest peaks, Mount Washington. This New Hampshire peak is said to have some of the worst weather in the world, but the views are totally worth it. It’s pretty steep, but who wants to relax in a bathing suit the next day without a tight glute workout? Hike it. I dare you. Cape Cod Camping (AKA “Glamping”) East Falmouth, Massachusetts Camping on the Cape might not be your first thought, but from the looks of it, it’s pretty sweet. The Cape Cod Camp Resort & Cabins is for, lack of a better term, the fake outdoorsman. This “campground” is like the Waldorf Asotria of campgrounds with a pool, hot tub, individual cabins for rent, laundry, private campground beach, sports field, playground and bathrooms. So, you can totally say you went “camping” but if you’re trying to get new friends to think you’re a woodsman, keep some details to yourself! But truly, what could be better than spending a vacation with your friends on the beaches of Cape Cod all day and camping all night? Get out of the city, get some sun and enjoy being young and carefree this summer – You deserve it!!

The Ultimate Routes: If you asked Peter what his favorite workout routes in Boston were, he’d list off 10 or more. “There is no shortage of places to go and exercise in this city,” Peter said. We’ve taken his top routes and narrowed them down for you. Route 1: The Boston Common: The Boston Common is a measured loop; it’s exactly 1.1 miles around. And, it’s the city. You’ve got the best of both worlds with the scenery and the city. From a trainers perspective, I love that the terrain is so varied.

Getting a Boston bod ready for summer is hard work. It takes dedication, time and effort, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring.

Wake up your fitness routine and join Ultimate Bootcamp. Ultimate Bootcamp runs four-week training sessions, consisting of one-hour workouts three or four times a week in nine locations in and around Boston. The workouts consist of muscle conditioning and cardio elements, which founder Peter Lavelle calls “rolling bootcamp”. We joined Peter on a morning workout at 6 am on the Boston Common. He pushed us through sprints, dips, pushups, planks, bands and more, all to help us get ready to show it all off this summer. While his camps are tough, they are still accessible to everyone. Stop putzing around and join Peter and his friends, and get in the best shape of your life.

Route 2: The Hills of Newtown: The great thing about Newton is the Carriage Road. You’re running on famed ground. And when you’re out there, you aren’t alone, there are tons of runners out there. Route 3: Anywhere on the Waterfront: Boston is one of the most beautiful cities. It’s geographically very easy to manage. You can see a lot of the city at one time. Plus the fact that it is an eastern facing city, you have the sunrise. For class schedule and pricing visit UltimateBootcamp.com

Step Ups: Simple step up, step down. Repeat on both sides 20 times. Make it harder by pushing off your foot when you step up for added momentum.

Pushups: Start with pushups on the ground. Try for 3 sets of 10. Make it easier by dropping to your knees, or harder by placing your feet on the bench for an incline pushup.

Dips: Place your butt as close to the bench as possible and legs straight. Pull in your elbows as you dip your butt towards the ground. Try for 3 sets of 10.

Crunches: Place your butt on the edge of the bench and lean back so you are balancing on the edge. Put your hands on the bench for stability, and pull your legs in and out. Try for two sets of 25.

The only cost is a transportation fee for the ferry to get there, which is $14.00. Classes start July 18th and run through Labor Day on Thursdays at 10:30 AM and Saturdays at 10:30 AM or noon.

The Harpoon Brewery in Boston also offers tours and tastings. It will cost you $5.00 but you will get a tour of the brewery and the brewing process, along with a souvenir glass for beer tastings. Summer

Music Festivals

By: Hannah Poster

Summer is fast approaching and if you’re a concert geek like me, that means one thingfestivals. While most are familiar with the three major ones -Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza - there are dozens of others worth checking out. Super Ball 9 (July 1-3) What would a summer be without at least one Phish concert? The legendary jam-band are feeding their fans ravenous appetites with a three day Phish-phest. The festival will take place in Watkin’s Glen, NY and will feature a series of performances by the band along with numerous activities, attractions and art installations. Three day passes start at $200. Camp Bisco (July 7 – 9) For their ten-year anniversary, Camp Bisco had rounded up their most impressive lineup yet. The festival, located in Eastern New York State, was founded by electronic jam band the Disco Biscuits. This year’s lineup features some of the biggest names in indie, electro and hip-hop, such as Bassnectar, Wiz Khalifa, Rusko, Skrillex, Ghostland Observatory, Das Racist and MSTRKRFT. So for all those electro nuts, dust off your glowsticks and ring pops and get to dancin’. Three day passes start at $160. Newport Folk Festival (July 30 and 31) The iconic festival, which has sparked the careers of legends such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, returns for its 52 year with a killer lineup featuring the Decemberists, Tegan and Sarah, Elvis Costello and M.Ward to name a few. Held right on the water in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island, this festival is a must for folk lovers. Outside Lands (August 12–14) While Outside Lands is a bit of a trek from Boston (it’s held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park) this ambitious new festival is one of the best. In just its third year, Outside Lands has one of the best and most diverse line-ups of the summer. Featuring big names such as Muse, Arcade Fire, Phish, the Black Keys and Deadmau5, as well as indie favorites such as Best Coast, the Decemberists and Flying Lotus. Outside Lands just may be worth the cross-country trip. Three-day passes begin at $200.

How to

Party for Independence By: Roman Wunderlich

As an international kid, I’ve seen my fair share of Independence Day celebrations around the world. But last year, I learned that nothing quite beats Boston on Americas birthday. When John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail Adams in 1776 he said, “The Declaration of Independence ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more,” Bostonians answered the call. John Adams hometown, Boston, puts on a party that according to the ever so reliable World Wide Web is THE “premier” party to attend in the USA and is the event CBS chooses to cover year after year. So how do you celebrate the best Independence Day ever? • RENT A BOAT: If you can get your hands on a boat, raft, Jet Ski, sailboat or anything that will float for 5 hours on The Charles River – DO IT! It is an unforgettable experience that you will want to do year after year. Last year a couple friends of mine and I packed up the boat with beer, burgers, hot dogs, chips, peanut butter and jelly and a grill for your all American cook-out on the water. It is tricky getting there because there are about 5,000 boats trying to get to the same place you are, so navigating around the Charles is a little tricky, but once you get there it is an absolute dream. Anchor up and relax and enjoy the festivities as they unfold on the esplanade. • ESPLANADE: Undoubtedly the Esplanade will be packed, but it is a ton of fun. The fireworks over the river are amazing and the Boston Pops plays live from the Hatch Shell (they set up speakers up and down the Esplanade so you can hear). Get there early, set up a blanket, bring a picnic dinner. It’s well worth the wait. •

SUMO SECRET: o If you want to avoid the crowd and tone it down a little bit, but still want to experience the ambiance of the Esplanade, grab a beach chair and some food and head to the Mass Ave bridge. It’s usually closed off for the celebration. o If you hate crowds and you still want to see the incredible fireworks, one of the best kept secrets is Summit Park up in Brookline. From here you can overlook most of the city and get a perfect view of the Charles. Bring fun games and your picnic, this park won’t be too crowded. o If you want to be in the middle of things and be amongst the younger crowd, take part in the event over on the Cambridge side. Its less crazy and usually attracts the young 20 something’s. From there you can hit up the swanky Cambridge bars to close off the night.

So If you want to be a part of Americas best 4th of July party, experience the fireworks, the fly over, Tchiakovskys 1812 Overture, howitzer canons, church bells and Bruce Springsteen, be sure to be on the Charles in some way, shape, size or form on July fourth. Hope the see you somewhere on the water in Boston. For more information go to www.july4th.org

Summer

Blockbusters

By: Jessica Yuscavitch

The most epic time of year is finally here – and for those lazy days when you’re tired for the heat and humidity of this unpredictable New England weather, turn to your local movie theater for these up coming must-see blockbusters. The Hangover: Part 2 – May 29th http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2196348185/ Phil, Stu and Alan are back for yet another hilarious adventure in the second installment of this awesome comedy. The guys get into more mayhem after Stu’s wedding – only this time, they’re in Bangkok. X-Men: First Class – June 3rd http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi168926489/ You might have seen the other movies, but prepare yourself for the true beginning of X-MEN. See where the series all began with the young Professor X and Magneto, before the greatest of friends became enemies. The Green Lantern – June 17th http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2110954777/ Here we go with another new super hero – the Green Lantern. The graphics don’t look half bad, we can probably count on some funny moments, some epic moments, and some sexy moments from stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2) – July 15th http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi137338137/ The final installation of the Harry Potter movie series is finally here-- so for hard core Hogwarts fans, get your tickets soon. For those of you who just skimmed this over because you really don’t care, you’ve been forewarned to steer clear of the theaters. The movie is coming out in 3D and IMAX, so get your tickets and enjoy the magic. Captain America – The First Avenger – July 22nd http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2207227161/ Yet another Marvel hero will make his début this summer - Steve Rogers turns into Captain America after volunteering for a top-secret project, and becomes a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals. Cowboys & Aliens – July 29th http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2016976153/ As ridiculous as it may seem, this movie has a lot of hype. Set in the Old West, a lone cowboy (the dreamy Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past, becomes the town of Absolution’s best hope against an alien invasion.

Have a Day at

Haymarket

by John Benevides

Every week plastic bags fly as the city of Boston falls back on its heritage. From dusk ‘til dawn on Fridays and Saturdays, the air around Hanover and Blackstone St. is ripe with the smell of fresh produce revitalizing a traditional European feel to the city. It is Boston’s traditional Open-Air Market, Haymarket, a Boston tradition since 1830. Amidst the coble-stone streets near Faneuil Hall people arrive early to setup shop and claim their small patch of tarmac. Sellers use tables and tarps to create their temporary shops and prepare their organic goods waiting for eager customers. Each booth offers a myriad of different goods including an amazing variety of vegetables, spices, and cheeses; all at dirt cheap prices. Outside you’ll find yourself surrounded by everything from giant one-pound carrots to exotic mangos and plantains but take the time to scope out what you want to buy. Feel free to haggle with sellers, it is half the experience.

The shanties line the small locally run butcher shops detailed with fresh goat heads and fine cuts of beef. The shops themselves have stood the test of time, and with a greeting like “Order Your Fresh Killed Goat Whole or Half,” how can you not check these places out? Puritan Beef is an amazing meat shop and they are always eager to help you out by chopping, slicing or dicing any piece of meat to your liking. Few tourists dare to venture into this hustling market. It does however attract the true Bostonians, from old immigrants out for their routine grocery shopping to first-time college students who are swallowed up in this hectic atmosphere. Plan according to what you want to make because the only downside is things will spoil quickly. Don’t forget your resuable bag. This is one place you are guaranteed to find some great buys, especially if you’re willing to make a day of it. Vist Haymarket every Friday and Saturday from dawn to dusk. Located next to Feneuil Hall

A Summertime Recipe: After a day of bargaining, nothing is better than sitting on the porch with a few beers and grilling. Here is a recipe for some great Surf and Turf kabobs with all ingredients purchased from Haymarket for under $20: Surf and Turf Kabobs with a BBQ Pineapple Glaze: (Serves 6-8 people) Ingredients: 1-2 Pounds Steak Tips 1 Pound Swordfish (or shrimp) 1 Pineapple 2 Green Peppers 2 Oranges 3 White Onions 4 jalapeno Peppers 2 Yellow Peppers 2 Orange Peppers 2 Tblspns Brown Sugar ¼ Cup of Pineapple Juice

First soak your skewers in water for an hour or so. This will prevent them from burning or snapping while you grill. Slice the swordfish steak and your beef into one inch cubes if not already done so. Prepare the glaze by mixing barbecue sauce and brown sugar. Add the pineapple juice to taste, then lightly brush the glaze on your steak tips and swordfish. Let them sit for at least an hour, but the longer the better. Slice the peppers and onions into large pieces and skewer with either steak or swordfish. Each has a different cooking time so don’t mix and match or you’ll end up with dry fish or undercooked beef. (That’s no good.) After they are prepared, place those bad boys on the grill and continue to glaze your kabobs while they cook. (I let the beef cook for 4-5 minutes on each side for medium and the swordfish about 3-4 minutes but it all depends on your preference.) Serve with an ice cold beer and enjoy the rest of the night!

The SoWa (South Washington) Open-Air Market is a relaxing spot for locals and tourists alike. This “Boston Original” starts May 1st and is held every Sunday until October 30th at 500 Harrison Ave. and features dozens of local and regional artists and vendors selling goods ranging from one-of-a-kind jewelry to freshly grown veggies. The market is also home to a dozen food trucks. We recommend stopping for a pickle at Grillo’s Pickles, or a cupcake from Cakeology. Bring your family, friends and even your pooch as the market is dog friendly. Come prepared with cash as most of the vendors operate under a cash only policy.
