Growing up in rural New Zealand in the 1960s, we had two heroes in particular who were often in conversations of proud Kiwis. Not only did we have the climber of the world's highest mountain Sir Edmond Hillary, but we also had the fastest man in 1960 and 1964, the champion, Sir Peter Snell. From memory we didn't have a TV until about 1966, some two years after Snell's double gold in 1964 Tokyo Olympics; however, whenever the clip of Snell's winning came on TV, the entire family was bursting with pride. A true legend from the rural town Opunake in the Taranaki, thank you. A modest, humble and incredible champion.
