As 2011 ends and we look toward the future, we not only reflect on what it means to get “out” – outdoors, out of town, out of the house - but the Summit Hut has also focused inward. Not only have we looked at what we can do better as a company, but also what we can do for our community and the people that have helped us be successful for over 43 years. While we have always felt that we have excelled in quality gear and customer service, we want to with our customers outside of their adventures. This year we have worked hard seeking your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. Your comments on Twitter and Facebook have helped us decide whether or not to carry certain products, helped guide the direction of the company, and you even voted for the winners of over $6,000 in Banff grants. This holiday season we have dedicated a few pages of our annual Gift Guide to feature three, of many, amazing local nonprofit organizations- Southwest Conservation Corps, Arizona Trail Association, and STEP. By highlighting these organizations we hope to give you an intimate perspective of the core values of these groups as well as introduce you to organizations you may not know much about. Our goal is to gather folks of similar interests and further fuel their passion for the outdoors. We thank each and every one of these organizations, as well as all the others in Southern Arizona, and all of you for making what we do meaningful in our community. Continue to share what you’re up to, whether through Facebook, our blog, or in-person. Continue to get out there. If that means outdoors, out of town, or out volunteering, the Summit Hut will continue to be there for you. Enjoy the holidays and have fun doing the things you love! Warmly, Dana, Jeremy and the Summit Hut Crew

Our Amazing Community

With the help of our staff, we narrowed that list down to six of our favorites.

Earlier this year, Summit Hut set out to find three of our staff, and customers’, favorite outdoor-related organizations. The response we got was incredible. First, we surveyed our staff who came up with a fantastic list of organizations doing amazing things around Tucson.

We then shared that list with our friends and fans on Facebook and asked for their opinions. The passion and excitement that you all showed for your favorite group was overwhelming! Each of the six groups showed why they were so highly regarded. By the end of our two-week voting process, we were extraordi-

Southwest Conservation Corp

The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC), founded as a non-profit agency in 1998, provides young women and men with structured, safe and challenging service and educational opportunities through projects that promote personal growth, the development of positive communication and community building skills, and an ethic of natural resource stewardship. SCC has its roots in the Civilian Conservation Corps approach of the 1930s and partners with AmeriCorps to provide national service opportunities for its members. SCC offers programs year-round throughout the southwest and operates a continuum of programs from community-based initiatives for younger teens to residential camping crews for individuals ages 16 - 25 to leadership programs for ages 21 - 26. SCC also leads several volunteer projects each year in the Tucson area to engage the general public in local conservation and trail projects. SCC service projects take place throughout the southwest, as well as disaster relief response in other parts of the country. Corpsmembers work, learn and camp in teams with six crewmembers and 2 crew leaders. Projects include trail maintenance, trail construction, desert restoration, invasive plant removal, fuels reduction, erosion control, and tree planting. Corpsmembers earn a living allowance while learning valuable work and life skills. SCC’s strengths lie not only in its service project accomplishments, but also in its ability to provide a viable work force to the region while offering engaging, outdoor service opportunities to participants. SCC greatly appreciates donations of used or new outdoor and camping gear.

The three groups represent a wonderful cross-section of what the outdoors means to the Tucson community. They prove the power that the outdoors has on developing successful and well-rounded youth. They demonstrate the drive and motivation that our region has in protecting our wild places. And they showcase the

beauty and diversity of our great state. Each and every one of the organizations that was part of this whole process deserves praise for what they do, but we are proud to be able to feature these three wonderful organizations in this publication and hope you will support them in any way you can!

Arizona Trail Association The Arizona Trail Association (ATA) is an 1000+ member non profit [501 (c) (3)] organization whose mission is to build, maintain, promote, protect and sustain the Arizona National Scenic Trail as a unique encounter with the land. Do you know... - Dale Shewalter wanted to prove his idea for a border-to-border hike was possible, so he hiked from Nogales to the Utah state line in 1985. - The Arizona Trail is the third National Scenic Trail (NST) completed. Though there are 11 NST’s, only the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and the Arizona Trail are finished. - In 2010, 21,247 volunteer hours were logged by people from across the state helping to maintain and improve the Arizona Trail. - The trail traverses the Grand Canyon, three flowing rivers - Gila, East Verde and Colorado--and reaches a peak elevation of over 9000’ in the Huachucas and a low of about 1700’ at the Gila River. - Every environment in Arizona is sampled: desert, sky island, canyon, oak and alpine forest, grassland. - Arizona Trail gateway communities dot the route, but the trail only directly crosses through Patagonia, Pine and Flagstaff,

STEP: Student Expeditions See below to learn how to TRIPLE the impact of your donation to STEP! Mission Statement: STEP equips low-income, first-generation college-bound Arizona teens with the internal tools to succeed in college; thus helping to break the chain of generational poverty in the families with which we work. For every 100 Arizona students in ninth grade, only 19 will enter a 4-year college directly after high school and only 9 will complete their bachelor’s degree in six years. STEP’s Leadership and College-Prep Program works at the forefront of equipping low-income, college-capable Tucson teens with the confidence and internal tools to take the next step to college. We do so through a two-step program including 1) focused guidance throughout the college preparation and application process, and 2) an immersion leadership program specifically designed to increase students’ self-confidence, enhance their ability to meet unfamiliar challenges, and widen their view of what’s possible for the future. Students enter STEP’s College-Prep Program in their sophomore year of high school and participate in monthly college-prep workshops throughout their sophomore, junior, and senior year. These workshops are designed to guide students through the process of preparing for and applying to college, with an emphasis on what it takes to become a successful college applicant and student. In the summer between their junior and senior year, STEP students participate in STEP’s Leadership Program. In partnership with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), STEP provides its students with an empowering and life-transforming 3-week wilderness leadership expedition in Alaska. Our students return from their STEP/NOLS Expedition with increased self-confidence, a greater sense of independence and personal responsibility, a larger view of the world and their opportunities in it, and a recognition that they can tackle any challenge ahead of them as long as they believe in themselves and do the hard work. Our overall vision: equip students with the most critical tool they can possibly have for future
