It was a sad day this summer when Betty Jenkins and Kathy Crosson retired from Appleby Library after more than 35 and 26 years of service, respectively. My children are just two of hundreds that grew up with Miss Betty and Miss Kathy. These ladies knew most of us by name, and would greet our children with a big smile each time they came to Appleby. These two have watched Summerville children grow up, leave, and return with their own children, eager to hear Miss Kathy read during Story Time upstairs. In addition to acting as branch manager, Miss Kathy and her husband tended to the grounds, keeping our historic Summerville library as if it were their own home. One of Miss Betty’s last acts as a librarian was to issue my son, Stephen, his very own library card. We think of Miss Betty every time he uses it. We wish these wonderful, dedicated ladies the best in their retirement, and look forward to new faces helping us at Appleby! ~ Laura Irwin

Letter From the President Mike O’Neill, 2013 Summerville Neighborhood Association President Dear Summerville residents and neighbors, The Summerville Board is happy to present this year’s Summerville Tour Weekend October 18th and 19th. This year, the “Tour of Homes” is back in full force with six wonderful stops on Glenn Avenue, McDowell Street, Milledge Road and Winter Street. I would like to offer a very special thanks to those families who have taken the time, worked hard to display their homes, and show the people in this community why Summerville is such a special place to be. I know we have had quite a few “Honey Do” lists for the homes this year which included a new front porch, back porch with fireplace and landscaping galore. This year will also mark the return of oyr popular trolley tour. We will have two trolleys driving our guests to each home. This nostalgic and fun aspect makes parking easy and simple, but also makes it more enjoyable for the whole family. As a Board, we are always looking for ways to celebrate and encourage patronage to our local stores and restaurants. For the second consecutive year, we will be offering the “Taste of Summerville” which features five local restaurants who are putting special offers and drink specials only available to those who are a part of the event. So please grab some friends

and come out to support some great local cuisine and libations. The Summerville Neighborhood Association has some exciting projects in the works this year so every dollar helps keep our village looking and feeling good. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind all who love and are residents of Summerville to be mindful that SNA was founded out of necessity to make sure we remained a historic minded “residential neighborhood.” In the 1970s and 1980s, there were quite a few zoning battles that were fought and won to preserve what we now have in terms of property values and elegance. We need to keep vigilant and protect what those before us accomplished we are simply stewards of the homes and streets that those before us created. My Thanks for all your support, Mike O’Neill, President

Stop # 1– Fire Station No. 7 – Tour Headquarters 2136 Central Avenue

There could not be a more appropriate headquarters for the 2013 Summerville Tour of Homes. “Old No. 7 has been a significant architectural fixture in the neighborhood since 1915, and served as the primary responder for fires in the Summerville neighborhood until the current station on Highland Avenue was built in 2003. The Mission style fire station evolved from roots established in a turn-of-the-century revival style in California. Not wanting to copy the East Coast revival of Colonial roots, this California style reaches back to the West Coast Hispanic roots for inspiration and design influence. The style quickly spread across the United States, and a number of beautiful examples can be found throughout the Summerville neighborhood. Old No. 7 is a superior symmetrical example of the Mission style, with the prominent one-story center portico below a recessed open porch, flanked by two-story bays with parapet walls adorned with crests, and second-story balconies, each shaded by a cantilevered roof. Old No. 7 was the first August fire station to be equipped with motorized vehicles (instead of horses) for carrying firefighting equipment, and the first in the area to be equipped with exterior red flashing warning lights to notify residents, and especially the trolley cars, that a fire engine was preparing respond to an incident. The building has been mostly vacant since 2004; however, recent efforts are underway to restore and maintain the station by Save Our Seven, a local group dedicated to preserving the building and the heritage of local firefighters. Their effort should be applauded as a celebration of why the Summerville neighborhood, as one of the largest districts in Georgia on the National Register of Historic Places, retains over 2,200 historic homes.

Stop # 2 – T he Home of Venus Morris & Hank Griffin 1309 Glenn Avenue

The Morris home at 1309 Glenn Avenue is a 1916 Colonial Revival “cottage” with a three-quarter wrap-around front porch supported by paired Ionic columns set on brick piers. The front façade is adorned with a firststory geometric bay, a hipped dormer, and an asymmetrical pattern seen in less than 10 percent of Colonial Revival architecture. The entrance door is much less assuming than most colonial revival cottages, lacking sidelights or a transom, but makes up for it with a geometric patterned window in the door influenced by Gothic-arched windows. The Morris family purchased this home in 2009 to be within walking distance of their church and the children’s school. A foursquare at heart, the footprint of the Morris home reads much less as a cottage than an estate, thanks to an extensive renovation and significant expansion that began in 2009, which added approximately 4,000 square feet, upgraded the living space to eight bedrooms, f ive full baths, and two laundry rooms to support the large family.

Printer of SummervillePost

The Morris home was completely stripped to the bones on the interior in order to update the electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and insulation, providing significant energy savings for the large square footage. Membership is encouraged for the residents of Summerville and is available to all. Stop # 3 – T he Home of

Bob & Dorothy Williams 1316 Glenn Avenue

The Williams’ home at 1316 Glenn Avenue is part of the dominant style seen in Summerville today. Built in 1930 during the latter part of the Arts and Crafts era, this Craftsman style home is a uniquely placed on arguably the most popular street in Summerville. Glenn Avenue hosts most of Summerville’s trick-ortreaters and is both safe for kids, and entertaining for adults. Generous Glenn Avenue residents give out thousands of treats each year, and the Williams family is no exception. The exterior of this stucco Craftsman demonstrates Moorish influence in the Ogee arched porch entrance and window pediments, while the eave brackets are reminiscent of California’s famous Arts and Crafts architects Greene and Greene. The Williams’ home, which was part of the 2008 tour of homes during its renovation, was completed in May of 2009 after the couple completely gutted the interior, while preserving the original interior details. Wood moulding was completely stripped, stored during the renovation of interior walls, and then reinstalled. The interior also received new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, sound system, and the addition of master suite that fits perfectly with the Craftsman Style. The Williams’ also retained the interior wood floors while re-arranging the floor plan to provide an expanded living room and theatre room. The William’s completed the renovation by removing a 1950’s addition in the rear, repairing the exterior trim and plaster, and landscaping with traditional plantings for instant curb appeal.

Stop # 4 – T he Home of Nick & Shannon Gladd 2427 McDowell Street

The Gladd home at 2427 McDowell Street was designed and built primarily in the Greek Revival style; however, the age and a few minor details deny this categorization. Built 50 years after the beginning of the War of Northern Aggression (known as The Civil War to those outside of the South), the Gladd home is a multiple revival of sorts. The original Greek Revival architecture, built through 1860 in the South, was a revival style influenced by Greek architecture, that eventually gave way to the more “sophisticated” Italianate and Queen Anne styles. It dominated public buildings and Southern plantations for the better part of the 1800s and became a national style, having spread to all settled areas of the US by 1860. Built in 1911, this home is a Neoclassical structure, and as the name indicates, was a new style that borrowed from Greek Revival and other Romantic Era architecture. The Gladd Home, with full height portico supported by Tuscan columns, door sidelights and transom, and symmetrical front façade are all borrowed from Greek Revival; however the hip roof instead of front-facing gable is the primary “Neo” contribution. The Gladd family moved back to Augusta and purchased the home in March of 2011, after a nine year hiatus in Columbia, South Carolina. They began a seven-month extensive renovation that placed them in the home in time to enjoy Halloween in Summerville, a real treat for their three daughters. For the centennial celebration/renovation, the Gladd family removed exterior aluminum siding, renovated all the columns, added a back covered patio with outdoor kitchen, and completely insulated all exterior walls to provide for a modern energy efficient residence. The Gladd family also updated a hippie-influenced interior by enlarging and installing a professional custom kitchen, adding a modern living room on the left side, adding a master bedroom suite, new laundry, gallery, playroom and oversized garage, and preserving the original plaster walls and heart pine flooring. ~ 12 ~

Stop # 5 – The Home of Sophie & Dr. Olivier Rixe 1109 Milledge Road

The Rixe family purchased 1109 Milledge Road in February after scouring the Summerville neighborhood for more than a year for the perfect home. Originally from France, by way of Cincinnati, the Rixe family had lived in the United States for a brief period, and upon returning to France, decided it was time for a permanent change back to the U.S. Work life brought the Rixe family to Augusta, and having a fond appreciation for historic architecture, they were naturally drawn to Summerville, and especially the unique design of this Queen Anne structure. As was common during this period of overlapping styles, there are a number of borrowed features on the exterior. Built in 1891 when the Colonial Revival style was in its infancy, the Rixe home is a somewhat transitional example of the Queen Anne style that almost endeavors to be something different. The scallop and dentil shingled siding on the gables and dormer is typical of Queen Anne, but shingle siding and the multiple façade recessions were common in the Victorian Era. Shingle style homes were also popular during this period. Features borrowed from Colonial Revival style include the triangular pediment of the front entry supported by paired Tuscan columns, the fanlight and sidelight door surround, and the side-gable form – something atypical of the Queen Anne style. After living in a contemporary home, the Rixe family has a greater appreciation for this home and, while they have three children away in college, there is plenty of room for the kids to return during holidays, and for friends and relatives to visit from France.

Stop # 6 – The Home of Mike & Jennifer Anderson 1326 Winter Street

The Anderson home at 1326 Winter Street is a typical American Foursquare, which developed primarily from the Chicago based Prairie style. It features a square floor plan, a hipped roof with deep overhanging eaves, and a hipped dormer protruding from roof. Also typical of this style is the full-width front porch with off-center entrance, normally surrounded by the Greek revival influence of a transom and sidelights, but in this case, the transom is replaced with a colonial-influenced fanlight. Departing from the typical Colonial-era influences are the ionic columns supporting the front porch roof, which are more ornate Greek order than is seen on most foursquare homes, and the 16-over-1 windows borrowed from its Prairie roots. After living locally for all of their lives, the Anderson family felt the urge to move to the Summerville neighborhood in order to take advantage of the sense of place that can only be found in a historic neighborhood. The Andersons selected the recently renovated foursquare built in 1906 as the place to fulfill their need for a sense of place – where they can sit on the deep front porch and enjoy their early morning cup of coffee, while getting to know their friendly neighbors out for a stroll with the dog. The Andersons updated a number of un-renovated areas after purchasing the home in 2011, including a recent renovation of the front porch, as well as stocking the home with an eclectic selection of family heirlooms, consignment shop treasures, Summerville finds, and local art.
