MD's MESSAGE Dear Go-Getter, Welcome aboard Asia’s Most Trusted airline!

G

oAir is all set to launch its 1st international destination of 2020 — Sri Lanka. Your favourite airline will fly direct flights from New Delhi to Colombo and Bengaluru to Colombo. GoAir currently flies to 8 international destinations namely Phuket, Malé, Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bangkok, Kuwait, Dammam and now, starting 20th March 2020, Colombo* will be the 9th international destination. Colombo draws visitors from across the globe for its fine blend of scenic streets, tradition and culture. GoAir operates its business on three basic principles: punctuality, affordability and convenience and I welcome passengers flying to Colombo to firsthand experience these attributes. Avail promotional roundtrip fare of `13,999 for New Delhi — Colombo and `9,899 for Bengaluru — Colombo. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has concluded its evaluation of Swachhata Awards 2019 and I am glad to share with you that in the “Category IV Private Airlines” award, GoAir is ranked number 2.

Long-term relationships are at the core of the 283-year-old Wadia Group. GoAir’s relationship with the state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) dates back to the inception of the airline in 2005 and it was our honor to participate in their ‘25th Annual Aviation Conference’. GoAir’s On-Time-Performance (OTP) has been acknowledged by Cirium and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and I can safely say that timely delivery of fuel by IOCL has also played a vital role in achieving OTP leadership. Our cover story is dedicated to International Women’s Day 2020. The theme is aligned with United Nations Women’s new multigenerational campaign, “Generation Equality”. Approximately 35 per cent of GoAir’s 5,500 employees are women and they add tremendous value to our operations. I am reminded of Pooja Thapa who went beyond the call of duty to save a young man’s life, who had stopped breathing, by giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. At GoAir, we have many inspiring and courageous women like Pooja who are doing some exemplary work day in and day out. This edition is an ode to the women power that has propelled GoAir to greater heights. *Subject to regulatory approvals

ROUND TRIP

24 HOURS IN

Aizawl

The hilly capital of the northeast Indian state of Mizoram has a quaint vibe coupled with a rich cultural heritage. Here is the best way to savour all of its sights in a day.

Text ANANYA BAHL

March is the season when one of Mizoram’s oldest festivals, Chapchar Kut, is celebrated. It displays traditional culture that is steeped in agriculture, song and dance. Dressed in traditional finery, men sit on the ground and tap long bamboos while women dancers jump through the spaces created between the bamboo shoots. To learn about the Mizo way of life of yore, head to Falklawn, where a typical Mizo village has been recreated.

HERITAGE Drive to Durtlang Hills, located north of Aizawl, which is the home of a settlement built more than 100 years ago. The Mizoram State Museum is a good place to understand the state’s traditional way of life and history. KV Paradise is Mizoram’s own Taj Mahal, built in 2006 by Mr. Khawlhring in the loving memory of his wife, Mrs. Rosangpui Varte. A two-storey building swathed in white, it showcases her personal belongings and photographs of their wedding. Other spots to visit include MacDonald Hill and the Zoological Gardens.

32

MARCH 2020 GoAir.in

CUISINE Mizo food is characterised by boiled vegetables and meat, rice and a little spice. Bamboo shoot plays a major role in the cuisine of the region — it is used in stews, boiled meat preparations and chutneys. Head to ZOfoods in the Venghlui area of Aizawl for an authentic lunch and don’t miss capturing pictures of its traditional tribal interiors.

CULTURE

TRAVEL Aizawl is surrounded by some places that are great for half-day trips or weekend getaways. Thenzawl, located about 90 km away, is a weaver’s village where you can learn about the puan (the traditional wraparound skirt worn by Mizo natives) and

how it is designed and woven. Durtlang Hills, about 8 km away, is an adventure lover’s paradise as it offers trekking trails and spectacular mountain views. Serchhip, about 91 km from Aizawl, hosts several paragliding championships owing to its spectacular mountain cliffs, favourable wind conditions and clear skies.

LIFESTYLE Aizawl’s Bara Bazaar is a cacophonous market filled with local wares, fresh fruit and vegetable stalls and plenty of haggling vendors and shoppers. It offers a peek into the everyday lives of the locals and is a must-visit for a late-afternoon or evening shopping jaunt. Things to shop in Aizawl include the traditional puan and wicker baskets. The other vibrant area to visit is Zarkawt. Zohanco, a handicraft shop, sells shawls, 34

Enchantment of colours!

Text GARIMA SHARMA

P

opularly known as the festival of spring or festival of colours, Holi is a celebration that’s visually delightful. Rejoicing in the glory of spring, this festival fills everyone’s heart with fun and laughter, similar to the vibrant colours of nature. Often associated with a day to forget and forgive, Holi is when people come together and feel the abundance of oneness.

36

MARCH 2020 GoAir.in

There are several legends associated with the festival, one of them being the ritual of Holika Dahan. This ritual happens the night before Holi when people gather, perform sacred prayers in front of a bonfire, and pray that their wrong deeds be destroyed the way “Holika”, the sister of the king Hiranyakashipu, was killed in the fire. This legend signifies the triumph of good over evil.

Lath Holi Also, known as Lathmar, this version of Holi is celebrated in the Barsana and Nandgaon regions near Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The twist here is that people hit each other with laths (sticks) along with colours. According to legend, Lord Krishna visited his beloved Radha’s Barsana village on this day and playfully teased her and her friends. Keeping the tradition alive, men from Nandgaon travel to Barsana on this day, where women hit them with sticks. Men try to shield themselves as much as possible, but the unlucky ones who get caught are made to dress like women and dance on the streets.

The great dosa-filter coffee trail in

Bengaluru and Chennai Dose in Bengaluru and dosai in Chennai — the subtle differences don’t end with the spelling. If Bengaluru’s signature is the golden, thick and fluffy dose almost ironed to perfection, Chennai’s would probably be the long, thin yet crisp dosai that’s rolled with equal precision. Pair this with filter coffee and you have a favourite breakfast ritual. Here’s where to head for your fix.

Chennai Krishna Restaurant, New Woodlands Hotel It is Woodlands that is largely credited with introducing Chennai to the Udupi-style masala dosa. Located next to Madras Music Academy, one of the city’s cultural hubs, it isn’t unusual for the city’s Carnatic music rasikas (fans) to drop by for a post-concert dosai, served with freshly-ground coconut chutney, that’s almost always washed down with their fail-proof filter coffee. It’s no surprise why this filter coffee has fans. The beverage has been crafted with coffee beans from the very same estate for decades. Address: Krishna Restaurant, Mylapore Contact: (044) 28113111

Hotel Saravana Bhavan The ghee roast dosa here is a Chennai legend and qualifies as a meal by itself — king-size, crispy, with the unmistakable aroma of ghee. This restaurant usually buzzes with activity at 6 am with beach walkers (and runners) from the nearby Marina Beach rubbing shoulders with tech workers heading home after an all-night shift. Sangeetha Veg Restaurant For an early morning breakfast, step into this hashery that boasts of a full breakfast menu. The filter coffee is the best way to start your day in the city. Sangeetha probably offers more varieties of dosais than any restaurant in Chennai. Their crispy onion rava dosa and Chettinad style dosas are bestsellers, while their evening menu offers a daily choice of healthy millet-based options. When in Chennai, eat like a local. But this joint is where Bangaloreans head for Karnataka-style tiffin favourites like maddur vade and thatte idli. But it’s their crispy Karnataka-style dosas (including a Mysore masala dosa with chutney slathered on the inside and also a healthy red rice dosa) that is its calling card. The restaurant’s Bengaluru-style filter coffee, green chutney (with coriander and coconut) and sweet sambar (if that’s your thing) seal the deal.

BINGE

Bengaluru Central Tiffin Room Malleshwaram is one of the city’s only links to the Bengaluru of the past with emblematic local establishments that will take you back in time. Central Tiffin Room (CTR) is one such hub. The filter coffee is always spot-on and then there’s the dosa with its trademark crispness and golden brown that’s arguably the best in town. Address: Central Tiffin Room, Malleshwaram Contact: (080) 23317531

Vidyarthi Bhavan A Bengaluru dining icon since the 1940s, this restaurant witnesses long lines on Sundays. Located in the crowded Gandhi Bazaar area, Vidyarthi Bhavan serves perfect Bengaluru-style filter coffee. Their ghee-laden dosas are sure to put you in a food coma. But it’s the wait staff who are the true stars here, tiptoeing through the cramped dining area with stacks of masala dosas served with their slightly watery trademark chutney. Address: Vidyarthi Bhavan, Basavanagudi Contact: (080) 26677588

MTR 1924 Mavalli Tiffin Room, popularly known as MTR, has been a part of Bengaluru’s dining culture for almost a century. From a single restaurant where diners had to wait days for a reservation, MTR is now a chain with a pan-Bengaluru footprint. Most regulars come back for their benne (butter) dosa (served with flavourful chutney) and the invigorating filter coffee.

The name is a giveaway. This restaurant has built its reputation on its perfectly brewed tumbler of filter coffee. It’s not just the coffee that shines; the restaurant’s Chennai-style dosas, including wholesome versions such as the murunga elai (drumstick leaves) dosa and green gram dosa, are its other stars. If you are feeling adventurous, try the Karupatti Kaapi (black coffee sweetened with palm jaggery). Address: The Filter Coffee, Kalyan Nagar Contact: 99004 55577

Honouring diversity at GoAir “GoAir is an equal opportunity organisation encouraging diversity in teams. Women comprise a total of 35% of our workforce. Even at our leadership positions, we have women driving the growth path for GoAir and the count of female leaders has only increased this fiscal year, from 8% to 13%. As part of our sincere attempt to raise this diversity quotient, we will be launching an exciting initiative this International Women’s Day, conceived by our COO, Ms Miranda Mills. The initiative, called ‘Go Get Her’, will be a referral programme to encourage our employees to refer women for various open positions across multiple locations.”

Aviation professional with over 25 years of experience. I joined aviation when the open skies policy had just come into being in India. It was the path less travelled and the possibilities were unlimited. Looking back at the past 25 years in the industry, I can say that it’s been a rewarding experience. What makes you “You”? I am passionate about whatever I do – with an unwavering eye on the goal – both personally and professionally. For me, my team is above everything else. Throughout my journey, I have had THE PRIVILEGE OF LEADING SOME kNE YOUNG WOMEN and men, and together we have scaled many heights. The journey from a wide-eyed college student to GoAir has been exciting, enriching and extremely satisfying. However, when I was a young child, I wanted to be a BEST bus conductor in Mumbai city. It felt fantastic. Our work culture is extremely diverse and welcoming of different skills and abilities. A genuine respect for each individual ultimately makes GoAir an enriching workplace. In one of the reviews, our MD, Jeh Wadia, told me, “You are not here to follow the status quo; you are here to change it.” That empowered me with the courage to do things differently and push through changes, SOME OF WHICH WERE kRSTS IN OUR company.

What has been your journey so far? After having worked in the hospitality industry, with Taj and ITC Hotels, for many years, I decided to pursue my passion for travelling. I combined this with my formidable writing skills and emerged as one of the top travel journalists in India, writing for all the top newspapers and magazines. I always knew I would do something grand with my passion, but never thought I would be creating a brand, till WOW happened.

COVER STORY

What drove you to create WOW Club? Ironically, I have always been ‘that’ friend who is a travel expert (consulted) whenever any of my friends or loved ones would make their travel itineraries — leisure or professional. So it was only natural for me to create a brand that dwells in sync with my passion. What further prompted me was my trip to Australia, where I met this wonderful group of American women, who were having the time of their lives. That little interaction with them sprouted the desire in me to create a platform, a means, of sorts, for Indian women who are avid wanderlusts and explorers at heart. Thus, 15 years ago, I founded, Women on Wanderlust, famously known as WOW Club.

What has been your most happy memory with WOW Club? A few years ago, we hit 100 trips a year. That’s a lot of women seeing the world through WOW.

Which has been your favourite travel tale and why? The journey I took to the very end of the world: Antarctica. The sheer visual beauty of that place along with the wildlife is simply out of this world. It literally hypnotises you.

What was the journey like, before you were tagged as “a-girl-whotravels-solo? I grew up in a protective Indian family in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and spent my childhood wondering what lay beyond the mountains, the majestic Himalayas. But like any other kid with aspirations to study in a reputed college, I moved to Singapore after high school with big dreams and a huge student loan. What is “wanderlust according to you? To me, it is a strong desire to wake up to new and unfamiliar horizons, both without and within.

COVER STORY

How did the journey of full-time travelling and blogging start? It all began with my desire to seek an unconventional path in life, one that would afford me the freedom to live on my terms and experience the incredible natural and cultural wonders of the world. So when I started travelling in India, all by myself — despite the so-called notion of solo travelling not being safe for females — I, on the contrary, encountered great emotional and cultural experiences, even in the remotest villages. It was then that I decided to write about it to encourage more women to travel solo and reclaim their freedom. Before I knew it, I was writing for leading publications, including BBC Travel and Conde Nast Traveller.

I write about my relationships, battles, triumphs and life-changing encounters and how I tried to conquer my deepest fears. Now, fly direct to Colombo from New Delhi and Bengaluru with GoAir. Colombo’s cafés and stylish eateries have quickly catapulted it to a prime spot on South Asia’s culinary map. For lovers of seafood and the delights of well-cooked crab, there’s Ministry of Crab. Housed in an old Dutch building, it serves up a smashing array of Sri Lankan crab cooked in many ways. Once a warehouse neighbourhood, Park Street Mews is increasingly topping the list of places to head to after sunset. Filled with bars and restaurants, this cobblestone street is where the city’s young and restless hob nob.

Eat your way through

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka takes its food very seriously. Whether you are tucking into a plate of kothu roti at a roadside cart or tearing apart a giant crab at a seafront restaurant, this original spice island never disappoints. Here are some must-eat dishes in Colombo. Text NIVEDITA JAYARAM PAWAR

With its prime location by the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a paradise for seafood lovers, especially lagoon crabs. The Ministry of Crab in Colombo is a go-to. Housed in the historic Dutch Hospital Complex, this restaurant is a treat for crustacean fans. Sample the Chilli Crab or Sri Lankan Curry Crab. Wash it all down with a chilled thambili (king coconut water). Another place to bask in this crabby goodness is The Fat Crab, also in Colombo. The Spicy Negombo Devilled Crab and Garlic Butter Crab here are worth making a mess. Address: Ministry of Crab, Old Dutch Hospital Complex Contact: +94 112342722

WOOD APPLES

JACKFRUIT CURRY

A Sri Lankan favourite, the sweet and sour brownish pulp from wood apples can be eaten straight out of the shell, much like the coconut. The fruit also finds its way into juices, jams and desserts. For the best ones, head to Pettah Market, one of the city’s busiest commercial areas.

There are various curries to try in Sri Lanka, but the green jackfruit curry is a creamy addition to your meal. Treat yourself to authentic polos curry at Lucky Fort. This family-owned restaurant in Galle cooks the curry on a low flame for a few hours in an earthen pot. Wolf this down with a bowl of steaming hot rice.

Photos: Courtesy Ministry Of Crab; Sanjay Ramachandran; AnnaTamila/Shutterstock.com

KOTHU ROTI Whether you like it late at night or for a leisurely breakfast, there is no denying that kothu roti is Sri Lanka’s most famous street food. This comfort food is made using roti cut up into small bits and mixed with ingredients such as onions, carrots, cabbage, eggs, and sometimes, chicken or mutton. Don’t be startled by the thunderous sound of chopping blades — used to slice the ingredients — on the griddle. One of the most popular places to sample the treat is the Hotel de New Pilawoos, a no-fuss restaurant. A Chicken Cheese Kothu Roti along with a glass of Iced Milo here won’t be forgotten any time soon.

HOPPERS

When in Sri Lanka, you must have kiri bath for breakfast. This is a traditional Sri Lankan dish made with cooked rice and fresh coconut milk. Every family has its own recipe passed down through the generations but the essential ingredients stay more or less the same. Cooked on auspicious occasions, it is complemented with lunu miris, a spicy chutney made with onion, tomato, lemon juice, coconut and dried fish. Address: Lucky Fort Restaurant, Prarawa Street, Galle Contact: +94 912242922

LAMPRAIS (LUMP RICE) This all-in-one meal has the Sri Lankan basics such as rice, curry, chicken, vegetables and spices. All components are packed into a single banana leaf, where they continue to cook and mix together fragrantly. VOC Cafe, operated by The Dutch Burgher Union, is everyone’s go-to. Their lamprais comes with a piece of chicken, ash plantain, cutlet, brinjal, egg and pol sambol (grated coconut, red onions and dried whole chilies mixed with fish) and is absolutely divine. Address: Dutch Burger Union, 114, Reid Ave Contact: +94 112584511

Start your morning with indulgent servings of savoury frilly pancake bowls called hoppers. While some prefer them plain, it is common to find an egg tossed in the centre. The traditional accompaniments include coconut sambal, chili sambol, chutney or curries. For an elaborate meal, load your hopper with fish or chicken curry. The best place for this comfort treat is Upali’s. Address: Upali’s by Nawaloka, 65, Dr C.W.W Kannangara Mawatha Contact: +94 112695812

The Royal Throne 3KILFULLY CARVED OUT OF kG WOOD AND studded with ivory plaque, this regal seat is a star attraction. On display on special occasions such as Dussehra, the throne comprises a main seat, steps leading to it and a golden umbrella over the throne. The throne — including the cushion and pillows — is embellished with precious stones and silver. It is said that approximately 280 kg of gold was used to create the royal throne. Because it is considered antique and sacred, it is assembled only during festivities.

Every royal family has its own interest. While some prefer hunting or painting, the kings of Mysore took a special interest in wrestling. The Woodeyar clan encouraged a special class of wrestlers called “Jetties” who put on a special event, a form of wrestling called Vajramushti Kalaga. This was held annually during Dussehra in the wrestling courtyard. In Vajramushti +ALAGA THE WRESTLERS kGHT EACH other with metal knuckles of various shapes and sizes. Although this courtyard is used for wrestling, the quaint steps and the stained glass windows around it lend a peaceful aura. If you look around, you can also spot the famous tiger emblem of the Mysore Palace.

bout two years ago, 30 artists from around the world set out to transform Mumbai’s 142-year-old Sassoon Dock in Cuffe Parade. One of the oldest docks and largest fish markets in the city, Sassoon Docks is now home to several murals and installations that speak of Mumbai’s history and its intrinsic culture. The mural (pictured above) covering two buildings, created by Shilo Shiv Suleman, presents women trying to break out of rigid social structures. One of the most impactful works is by artist JR titled Inside Out, a series of monochrome print portraits of local Koli residents, lining the exterior of the dock buildings. It’s an ode to the vibrant Koli fishing community, integral to Mumbai’s history and culture.

TAROT

WHAT YOUR CARDS REVEAL...

An overview of what to expect this month. ARIES

TAURUS

Someone’s indecisive behaviour may increasingly bother you. But you might learn something important about yourself. Pull back and give others space to make decisions at their own pace. For those living in the north, a quick trip to Bagdogra sees you make quick progress with your trade.

It’s important now to be thorough in your thinking so that your message to your colleagues can be delivered as effectively as possible. Many of you will need to take a trip to Hyderabad. You might be concerned that you aren’t being able to say what’s on your mind. But it is only your state of mind; you should be at ease.

GEMINI You will have a continuous stream of thoughts but do realise that these are just mere theories. Work with every productive idea and let go of self-doubt. Remember: nothing good has ever come out of negative assumptions. This month is a good time to set priorities, maybe a quick trip to a beach like Goa will give you that much needed time off.

CANCER Your ambivalence about a family matter could easily be misinterpreted by others. What you can do is set the record straight. Avoid a misunderstanding that could grow into a conflict. When travelling for work to Jaipur, you are likely to meet someone who will have a strong influence on you.

LEO At times, being unbiased is all that matters, and this is where you step in this month. If you are travelling to Kochi or Guwahati, you could play the role of a diplomat as you stand in the middle of a conflict. You may have a point of view, yet you are wise enough to keep it to yourself. Don’t get tricked into taking sides. Realise that you only need to help the parties find common ground.

VIRGO You are open-minded now because you understand that different perspectives could be valid, too. You will find new work opportunities at a city by the sea but remember to maintain healthy boundaries from the start rather than having to overcompensate later on. This is a good time because you are self-aware. You aren’t as concerned about holding firmly to your beliefs since you are self-assured. 110 MARCH 2020 GoAir.in

TAROT

LIBRA This month you may need to be cautious since you may discover that you missed an important piece of information shared by your coworker or friend. Learn as best you can and move on. Some of you will run high on imagination and intuition. Allow yourself to relax by taking a yoga holiday in the hills so the energy around you starts flowing in the right direction.

SCORPIO If you are involved in the share market, it could need your attention. The cards suggest a quick work trip to Nagpur to make things right in your favour. This could be a time where you may need to be at too many places but cheer up, it’s something that comes easy to you. You’ll have your chance to clear the air soon enough.

SAGITTARIUS Looking to the future is easier if you have plans for something exciting to do. However, if that isn’t the case, it’s a reminder that first, you must create your own adventures in your mind. Don’t be afraid to dream of your great escape, for it’s the first step in making it a reality, especially if you have moved to a city like Goa.

CAPRICORN Playing it cool at work may not convey your intentions. You want others to see you as confident and capable. Your workload may make you feel lethargic but your perseverance is what makes you, you. Play it by the ear and don’t be overtly emotional about happenings at work. If your family home is down south, you will need to make plans to travel there.

AQUARIUS A close friend or family member might say something that strikes you as rather odd. Clarify it with them before it snowballs into a problem. You will see a shift in energy, causing you to re-evaluate important personal and financial commitments. Many of you will take a longneeded break and travel to the south, especially a beachy location like Kochi. 112

PISCES It’s challenging to understand people’s motives, for they are presenting only one side of their story. But beneath the surface lurks an abundance of mystery and complexity. You are not interested in psychological dramas and mysterious meanderings, instead you work towards unwrapping things that have been hidden from your sight for a long time. Those with offices in Pune and Ahmedabad, will be required to do a quick trip. (Cherry Shethia lives in Goa and is available for one-on-one readings. Solutions of Astrological/Vaastu problems

Astro & Vaastu expert Pt. Jai Prakash Sharma (Lal Dhagewale) Question- We are not able to find the perfect match for our daughter even though she is beautiful and accomplished. As to why we are not finding good and compatible match? Answer- I have closely observed the horoscope of your daughter. The Mars is in the seventh house. And Saturn is creating hurdles in her marriage. Ask her to fast for Maa Gauri Mangla. She would soon get positive news. Q (2)- My family is facing acute money crunch. Nothing positive is happening in my family. Due to this reason, mental tension has gripped all of us in the family. Please suggest some remedy to overcome this crisis? Ans- You were born in Karak lagan. Ketu, Rahu and Shani are also malefic. You should wear a locket of pearl, sapphire and coral. Things would surely improve. Q-(3) My younger son is very naughty and misbehaves with all of us. Will he ever improve ? Ans- There is nothing evil in being naughty. Try to counsel him and he would improve. Basically your son is a sharp boy. Try to horn his skills and he would shine after two years.

Q-4- I am having illusions and of late I have become forgetful. More often than not I forget my way. I cannot go alone anywhere during night. I am always fearful of anything and everything. Even psychologists are not able to help me ? Ans- Saturn and Rahu in your lagan are creating all kinds of problems for you. I will suggest you to wear pearl. You would see better times. Q-5- Juptier is malefic in my horoscope. What should I do to improve ? Answer - Chant Vishnu Sahasranamam, put kesar and haldi tilak on your forehead as and when you leave home. Further, give food to Brahmins and put water on Pipal tree. You would see things changing for better. Q-6 South-West entry is not supposed to be auspicious. Why? Ans. All the positive energy from North-East corner will move away through SouthWest door. It is supposed to be the door of leakage of money. South-West corner should also be closed and blocked to avoid negative energies entering into the house.
