Why Move Away From Conventional Fast Fashion? – EarthyWorthy Shopping for new clothes can be fun, but at the same time, a task! Finding the clothes you like that is in fashion, looks good on you, fits well on all the curves, and is well within your budget is definitely a task, wouldn’t you agree? Now, in the midst of all of this, where would you find the time or chance to worry about how organically or inorganically the clothes have been made!? Unless you really are a nature lover and eco-friendly person, you wouldn’t even care to look at what your garment is actually made of, will you? But, this is where we all go wrong. It is this lack of concern that has led us to the environment that we live in today. We focus on organic drinks, organic food, organic cosmetics, and organic food storage containers, but what about contemplating on organic garments?

Organic garments! You would think, who would even consider about clothing going organic? But, the fashion industry is a huge trade, and

we all know that. And, amidst the fashions changing at lightning speeds today, have you considered how many fibers are being created, and how these billions of fibers produced are affecting the environment! It is the age of fast fashion today. While in the 1990s, fashion changed with seasons – just four times a year, today, fashion is changing almost every week! Yes, it’s true. Fashion is changing so fast that as soon as you understand what’s trending today, and go shopping the next day, you already find that what you bought is out of style by the time you plan on wearing it. In this way, either we are left behind with what is not trending anymore, or with a damaged bank account. In any way, our environment suffers the most. How? Take a look.

Fast fashion is harmful to the workers With fast fashion, there are billions of garments being made each year, having so much involvement of workers in all segments, right from farming to sewing. None of these workers are paid well or treated fairly, let alone the harmful working conditions that they are involved in, with the detrimental chemicals, fertilizers, and dyes that they have to live around with. So, even after the workers are taking up so much of risk, they aren’t being supported with even livable wages!

Fast fashion is polluting the water Whatever kinds of fibers and fabrics are being made, gallons of water are used to produce each garment. And, we all know that textile dyeing is one of the largest sources of water pollution. All the dyes used have tremendous amounts of hazardous chemicals that

are toxic, bio-accumulative, and carcinogenic to the water animals. Either the water animals die living in such unsafe water, or the wildlife and we humans are led to diseases of all sorts, after consuming such water animals.

Fast fashion is filling our landfills With fast fashion, and billions of garments being made, obviously not all of them are being sold, or worn up till their last fiber getting strayed. More than half of the garments end up in the landfill. Also, while manufacturing the garments, the excess fabric and erroneous fabrics are dumped into the landfills. And, we don’t need to explain to you how damaging these landfills are for the environment, do we? With all these upsetting results seen as a result of the fashion industry, we should appreciate those companies who are considering these factors, and coming up with better ways to resolve these issues. We must, as a human, support such ethical clothing companies to make better alternatives to such harmful clothing. Some companies may manufacture eco-friendly clothing, while others may recycle what’s already there and create zero waste garments. Whatever your choice, you must support such companies and buy sustainable fashion
