GUIDANCE FOR STEP 1: COMMIT TO BEING A RESPONSIBLE WATER STEWARD 1.1 Establish Leadership Commitment
• Intent: To ensure that senior management are publicly accountable. It also helps to empower and enable sitelevel staff to undertake water stewardship actions on an ongoing basis. This support helps to ensure that staff members have the necessary resources and time to implement the Standard.
1.1 Establish Leadership Commitment If an implementing entity is not its own complete business or water service provider—in other words, is one of a number of sites making up a larger entity—then the leadership commitment is a two-fold exercise
• First, a member of the senior-level management team from the controlling entity must provide a signed leadership commitment, as noted above. • Second, an additional commitment also must be provided by the site-level leader or a senior management member. • This is done to ensure that there is both corporate (high-level) support for the water stewardship efforts being undertaken at the site level as well as site-level support for implementation. •
Output from this criterion should be a signed leadership commitment
1.1 Establish Leadership Commitment Referencias sugeridas : United Nation • The guidance on how to “respect” water-related rights should be drawn from the UN’s work on human rights, specifically, John Rugge’s thinking, framed around the UN “Protect, Respect and Remedy” framework:

1.1 Establish Leadership Commitment 1.2 Develop a water stewardship policy 1.3 Commit to other water-related initiatives
1.2 Develop a water stewardship policy
• Intent: To provide overarching guidance for the site on your organization’s approach to stewarding water resources. • Such a policy helps to ensure consistency between sites and, unlike an annual stewardship plan, the policy is less likely to change from year to year. • Such a policy can be used in public communications as a means of describing the entity’s approach to water stewardship.
1.1 Establish Leadership Commitment 1.2 Develop a water stewardship policy 1.3 Commit to other water-related initiatives
1.3 Commit to other water-related initiatives
• Intent: To create a synergy with other standards, sector- or regionally-specific initiatives that support sustainability (commit to additional, voluntary and complementary water-related initiatives). These may include local programs, international commitments or other standards with water aspects, (e.g., UN Water Courses Convention, ISEAL standards, ISO standards etc.)

Paso 2: Obtenci贸n de data y comprensi贸n de riesgos, impactos y oportunidades
Intent: To establish the area over which you have direct control (the site) as well as develop an understanding of the water sources and catchments that you affect and are reliant upon. This understanding is critical to guide your stewardship outreach.
Paso 2: Obtenci贸n de data y comprensi贸n de riesgos, impactos y oportunidades

3.1 Ensure a system for legal compliance 3.2 Create a site water stewardship plan 3.3 Notify catchment authority of your plans 3.4 Set ecologically-driven targets 3.5 Set stakeholder-driven targets 3.6 Plan for adaptation and resilience
3.1 Ensure a system for legal compliance INTENT
• To ensure that you understand the legal requirements, as well as water rights issues and have the capacity in place to ensure compliance. It is a basic premise that water stewardship involves at its core: meeting all national and state water regulations and laws.
3.1 Ensure a system for legal compliance SECUENCIA PARA PLANIFCAR ACCIONES (A. Dourojeanni)
3.1 Ensure a system for legal compliance 3.2 Create a site water stewardship plan 3.3 Notify catchment authority of your plans 3.4 Set ecologically-driven targets 3.5 Set stakeholder-driven targets 3.6 Plan for adaptation and resilience
3.2 Create a site water stewardship plan GUIDANCE
• The stewardship plan needs to respond specifically to risk profile and outline of intended contribution to water stewardship outcomes at the site and catchment-level. The plan should address any stakeholder concerns identified and consider food-energy-water nexus issues facing the catchment.
The plan must define specific – SMART targets (that is targets that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based) – timelines – responsibilities (including for data collection and recording of core indicators) – capacity needed (water-related emergency incident preparedness activities
3.1 Ensure a system for legal compliance 3.2 Create a site water stewardship plan 3.3 Notify catchment authority of your plans 3.4 Set ecologically-driven targets 3.5 Set stakeholder-driven targets 3.6 Plan for adaptation and resilience
3.3 Notify catchment authority of your plans INTENT
• To connect you with your catchment authority/agency and ensure they are aware that you are explicitly contributing to their plan.
3.3 Notify catchment authority of your plans GUIDANCE
• To comply with this criterion, a site must demonstrate active outreach to the catchment authority (or equivalent) and demonstrate how the site’s water stewardship plan contributes to the catchment plan. • For example, if the catchment plan sets a target to maintain dissolved oxygen at a target level of at least 50 percent saturation, the site’s water stewardship plan must contribute to, or not impede, that target
3.1 Ensure a system for legal compliance 3.2 Create a site water stewardship plan 3.3 Notify catchment authority of your plans 3.4 Set ecologically-driven targets 3.5 Set stakeholder-driven targets 3.6 Plan for adaptation and resilience
3.4 Set ecologically-driven targets INTENT
• To include targets that go beyond human consumption and use needs and help to address ecosystem function and ecosystem value purposes. This action should also help to ensure mitigating of physical water risk as well as reputational risk.
3.4 Set ecologically-driven targets One recommended approach is to employ the Conservation Measure’s Open Standards approach
• ( http://www.conservationmeasures.org/initiatives/standards-for-project-management ) • Identify (or obtain from experts) the species, assemblage or ecological process of interest. • Identify (or obtain from experts) the key ecological attributes of the given species, assemblage of species, or ecological process. • Determine (or obtain from experts) the current status of those key ecological attributes.

3.5 Set stakeholder-driven targets INTENT
• To determine the collective action required to improve or maintain the status of the catchment. • Points: 7
3.5 Set stakeholder-driven targets GUIDANCE
• To meet this criterion, the site must engage stakeholders in a joint planning process to determine what targets are necessary to improve or maintain the status of the catchment. This is to be done through a participatory, consensus-based approach. • Please see criterion 2.6 and 3.4 for more guidance on how to identify and collaborate with stakeholders at a catchment level

3.6 Plan for adaptation and resilience INTENT
• To ensuring that plans are in place to adapt to changing circumstances helps to mitigate water risks. Points: 6 Guidance: • There is a considerable amount of guidance on developing plans for adaptation and resilience to climate change. Please see the references below for additional details. •
To comply with this criterion, sites should provide a set of plans that address adaptation and resilience, or demonstrate how their existing plans take these issues into account

5.1 Evaluate performance and context 5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents 5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance 5.4 Update water stewardship plan 5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts 5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
Step 5: EVALUATE – Evaluate your performance
• Step 5 is intended to review performance against the actions taken in Step 4, learn from the outcomes— both intended and unintended—and inform the next iteration of your stewardship plan. • AWS Core Criteria Indicator(s) Core/Points
5.1 Evaluate performance and context
• Intent: To periodically review how you are performing in light of efforts and context. This forms the basis of determining any adaptive management efforts that are required by modifying your stewardship plans (i.e., changes to your stewardship plan in criterion 5.4). Overall, this review effort helps to improve the effectiveness of your stewardship efforts by harnessing lessons learned.
5.1 Evaluate performance and context 5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents 5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance 5.4 Update water stewardship plan 5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts 5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents
• You must evaluate impacts of emergency incidents, if any occurred, and determine effectiveness of corrective and preventive measures. Factor lessons learned into updated plan.
• 5.2.1 Documented evidence (e.g., annual review and proposed measures) • Core
5.1 Evaluate performance and context 5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents 5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance 5.4 Update water stewardship plan 5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts 5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance
• Intent: To validate your performance with stakeholders, thereby reducing reputational risk.
5.1 Evaluate performance and context 5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents 5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance 5.4 Update water stewardship plan 5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts 5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
5.4 Update water stewardship plan
• Intent: To use the results of the evaluations above to improve your water stewardship plan. • Guidance: • This criterion requires the site to revise the site water stewardship plan with the data gathered in Step 2, implemented in Step 4 and evaluated in Step 5. •
This is the ‘act’ part of the ‘plan, do, check, act’ loop.
•
At a minimum, updates should occur on an annual.
•
Compliance will be indicated by the presence of an updated water stewardship plan.
5.1 Evaluate performance and context 5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents 5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance 5.4 Update water stewardship plan 5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts 5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts
• Intent: To ensure that the concepts of water stewardship, water risks and impacts are considered and evaluated not only by staff, but by those at the highest level within the organization. Having boardlevel consideration of water helps to ensure that those tasked with the ultimate responsibility of risk are indeed aware.
5.1 Evaluate performance and context 5.2 Evaluate emergency incidents 5.3 Consult stakeholders on performance 5.4 Update water stewardship plan 5.5 Board level review of water stewardship efforts 5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement
• Intent: To recognize particularly strong stakeholder engagement efforts during the stakeholder‘s evaluation of the site’s plan. • Guidance: • Stakeholder engagement as a concept often is poorly undertaken by businesses. Weak efforts, poorly considered outreach, a lack of gender-based considerations and many other aspects lead to weak engagement.
5.6 Advanced stakeholder engagement GUIDANCE
• Efforts that explicitly have gender considerations and take into account marginalized groups can provide much more robust understanding. Such engagements will provide additional insights from those stakeholders who are often the first to feel impacts. Accordingly, these marginalized groups often can provide the most valuable insights to sites.
