Calgary Opera’s

Emerging artist production of Cinderella Adapted by Rob Herriot from operas by Rossini and Massenet Our 2016-17 Emerging Artists recently finished their Calgary and Northern Alberta tour of Cinderella. In just over a month our artists brought live opera to over 12,000 students through 44 performances.

Without our Opera in Schools Tour, many of these students would never get the opportunity to see an opera. This program allows us to reach, and teach, the young minds of Alberta about the performing arts. Setting the

Stage

By Director brian deedrick

Deadlines being what they are, these words are being written weeks before you find yourself in your seat at the Calgary Jube, patiently waiting for Turandot to unfold before you in all its— and her—glory. It’s been a couple of years and an awful lot of productions since I was last here at Calgary Opera: some of the faces remain the same (if slightly more careworn by the endless challenges of producing great art in difficult times, just when we need it the most!), and yet so many new people bring a completely different and exciting energy to the organization. Familiar or new, it is a delight to discover that folks here continue to make Calgary Opera one of the best regional companies in a country rich with passionate artists, craftsmen and administrators, all committed to this wonderful, magical and revitalizing art form of opera. Today is Day #3 of Turandot staging rehearsals, and I’m jotting down these thoughts in the costume shop, while I wait as patiently as possible for our leading lady, Michele Capalbo, to be fitted for her numerous costumes. The wardrobe team, headed by the gifted and amazing Heather Moore, is a lesson in attention to detail, ensuring the comfort and needs of all our singers, and providing a healthy sense of collaboration as we all work toward the product onstage. Hovering nearby are the Heads of hair and makeup, Franca Vaccaro and Rose Gurevitch, madly taking notes and photographs in order to determine the needs and requirements to transform Michele into the Ice Princess of Puccini’s fairy tale of ancient China. It all requires a huge amount of work, and I’m boggled by the class, professionalism and delight these creative women take in their work. And all the other people involved? In these insanely busy first three days, our proudly all-Canadian cast of ten principals from all across the country, have been digging into and exploring this beautiful piece, while our Ping, Pang and Pong have already had hours of “fan choreography” (you’ll see what I mean shortly). Our “token” American, the brilliant and hilarious Maestro Joey Mechavich, is working with our guest repetiteur, Kim Bartczak, to guide this musical ship, and it’s a privilege and a great

10 CALGARY OPERA 2016-17 SEASON

deal of fun to have them both on board. But the splendid thing about opera is its hugeness, its creation of an entire and unique world on the stage: as well as our core group, the thirty-nine members of the adult Chorus (led by Calgary treasure Sandra Atkinson, who has been with Calgary Opera for its ENTIRE fifty-year history!), the seventeen children from Catherine Glaser-Climie’s acclaimed Cantaré Choir, our five wonderful Supernumeraries, the Stage Management team, Bonni Baynton’s production staff, and everyone led by Taras Kulish and Lauren Martin in Administration of Calgary Opera are toiling away on the show, and this is only our third day! Let me jump ahead to the actual night of the performance you are attending. I know, I know, you can find all of these names and more that I’ve mentioned in the program you’re reading, but I think it’s very important to note that, once you include the musicians of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the entire house and backstage crew of the Jubilee Auditorium, more than two hundred people are here tonight, working as one gigantic team to make this performance possible, and every single one of us has worked to the peak of our ability to make Turandot an unforgettable experience for you. In so many ways, the magic of opera is that it even happens at all! For me, a great company is built through great leadership, and I am lucky to have been around long enough to have worked for both David Speers and Bob McPhee. With infinite respect and admiration, I want to salute the man who has led this company for the past nineteen years: it is Bob who made it possible for the aforementioned two hundred plus of us to come together this evening to share Turandot with you. I’m drop dead grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with all of these wonderful colleagues and friends to bring Puccini’s final masterpiece to the stage, and to the man who has kept Calgary Opera great. Bob, this one’s for you.

synopsis

April 1, 5 & 7, 2017 Prologue

In legendary times in ancient Peking, Princess Turandot will marry any man of royal blood who can answer three riddles – he who fails suffers death.

Act 1

Outside the Imperial Palace A crowd gathers to witness the execution of the Prince of Persia, Turandot’s latest suitor. The slave girl Liù helps Timur, the aged and blind exiled King of Tartar, through the crowd. In the crush of people Timur falls to the ground. In response to Liù’s call for help, the exiled Prince Calaf discovers that the aged man is his father, and they are reunited. Liù reveals her admiration for Calaf due to his smiling at her years before. The bloodthirsty crowd changes their tune with the arrival of the doomed Prince of Persia. They entreat Turandot to show mercy. She orders the execution to proceed. Timur, Liù, and Calaf are left standing alone in the square. Calaf, as if hypnotized by Turandot’s beauty, attempts to sound the gong to announce that he will be her new suitor. Ping, Pang, and Pong, the Princess’s ministers attempt to dissuade him. Calaf insists that he will win Turandot’s love. Timur and Liù beg Calaf not to leave them. Calaf sounds the gong three times, calling aloud Turandot’s name.

Act 2

Ping, Pang, and Pong’s Pavilion

The ministers Ping, Pang, and Pong lament the seven thousand centuries of serenity in China that was destroyed by the reign of Turandot. They read the lists of Turandot’s unfortunate suitors; Calaf is the 13th. Ping, Pang, and Pong look forward to a time when Princess Turandot yields to love. Their reverie is disturbed by the preparations for Calaf’s upcoming trials. They hurry away.

A Square Leading up to the Imperial Palace The people of Peking gather to witness the scene as the Emperor Altoum enters. The Emperor exhorts Calaf to leave at once to save his life. Calaf answers that he wishes to face the ordeal. The Emperor orders the trial to

proceed. Turandot recounts the centuries old story of the beautiful Princess Lo-u-Ling, her revered ancestor, who lived in peace and tranquillity. Then the King of Tartary invaded China, conquering and despoiling the land. The Princess Lo-u-Ling was dragged from her palace and brutally slain. For that crime, Turandot swears to take revenge on all the princes of the earth; she is resolved that no man will ever possess her. Turandot poses the first enigma – it dies with the rising of the sun and is reborn each night. Calaf answers correctly – hope. Turandot poses the second enigma – dreams of triumph and conquest cause it to glow with passionate fire. Calaf answers correctly – blood. The third and final enigma – a being of ice and fire. Calaf answers – Turandot. The crowd acclaims Calaf. Turandot begs the Emperor to save her from the stranger. The Emperor replies that her oath is sacred. Turandot rages that she will never submit. The people urge her to reward the stranger’s courage with her love. Turandot asks Calaf if he wants her with her heart full of hatred. Calaf replies that he only desires her to yield in love. He declares that he will release her from the oath, and he offers Turandot a riddle. If she can tell him his name before dawn then he will forfeit his life. Turandot assents. The Emperor approves and welcomes Calaf to the palace. The people praise the Emperor.

Act 3

The Palace Gardens

Calaf listens to the voices of the heralds as they proclaim Turandot’s order that no one in the city will sleep tonight. They say that all will perish unless the name of the stranger is brought to her before dawn. Turandot’s ministers attempt to get Calaf to reveal his name. As Calaf refuses the crowd turns on him. They are stopped by soldiers, who drag in Timur and Liù, who have been badly beaten

in an attempt to learn Calaf’s name. Turandot arrives, adding her demands to the crowds. The soldiers continue to torture Liù, who refuses to give up the name. Turandot asks Liù what has inspired such courage. Liù answers that it is love, a secret love for a prince who is her lord. In a demonstration of devotion and hope for the future, Liù takes her own life. Timur grieves for the dead girl. The crowd superstitiously fears her avenging spirit. The body is carried away with Timur lamenting her death. Alone, Calaf asks Turandot to look at the innocent blood that was spilled. Turandot resists Calaf’s advances. Calaf declares his love. Overwhelmed, Turandot admits to being vanquished, as her eyes fill with tears. Turandot asks him to leave without telling her his name. He refuses, and offers both his name and his life to her keeping. She realizes that he has been utterly successful. A distant fanfare signals the final trial.

A Square leading up to the Imperial Palace As the sun rises the Emperor is seated on his throne, surrounded by the court. Turandot approaches the throne and tells her father that she had learned the stranger’s name. She declares his name is Love. Calaf and Turandot are united. The people celebrate their good fortune.

Mr. Bruce is a graduate of the Calgary Opera Emerging Artist Development Program and has performed the roles of Male Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia), Candide (Calgary Opera in the Village), Jonathan Dale (Silent Night), Le Dancaïre (Carmen), Roderigo (Otello, Pacific Opera Victoria), and most recently as Emperor Altoum in Edmonton Opera’s production of Turandot.

Michele Capalbo SOPRANO

Turandot Rarely is the opera world treated to the talents of a genuine Verdian soprano... Michele Capalbo is that rarity. Michele recently sang the role of the anarchist Emma Goldman in the world premiere of SHOT! as well as Liù in Turandot. Concert appearances have included the Verdi Requiem and Poulenc’s Stabat Mater. She will make her debut in the role of Donna Anna in Edmonton Opera’s Don Giovanni next season. Selected credits include the role of Aida for Le Festival de Musique de Strasbourg; Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico; Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, France; the Canadian Opera Company and San Francisco Opera. In addition to a demanding performance schedule, Michele is being certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique and is an advocate for music education.

Nicole Bergen works as a stage manager and assistant stage manager in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Past shows include The Barber of Seville, Madama Butterfly, The Magic Flute, Carmen, and The Marriage of Figaro (SM, Saskatoon Opera), Die tote Stadt, Lakmé, Silent Night, Candide, The Flying Dutchman, The Pirates of Penzance, La Traviata, Otello, La bohème, Moby Dick, Aida, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Manon (ASM, Calgary Opera), and Ariodante and What Brought Us Here (SM, Calgary Opera, second stage). This season’s shows include Die Fledermaus (SM, Calgary Opera), Filumena and Turandot (ASM, Calgary Opera), Christmas at the Opera (SM, Calgary Opera, second stage) and Don Giovanni (SM, Saskatoon Opera).

Catherine Rouleau Assistant Stage Manager Originally from Montréal, Catherine Rouleau is always happy to return to Calgary Opera. Jennifer Dickinson

Thank You for

All You Do

The process of producing an opera is a long one, that requires many hours of rehearsal time, especially during the days leading up to opening night. We often recognize the production crew and artists for their work in creating the final product, but there are others who work in the background that don’t always get recognized.

One such person is Jennifer Dickinson, who has been volunteering for Calgary Opera over 15 years. Jennifer and her team provide one of the most important functions in keeping everyone working on the production happy during these long days…they feed the cast and crew! She organizes an incredible group of back stage catering volunteers who help prepare the snacks for the cast and crew.

1. How long have you been working in catering for Calgary Opera? I have been helping with the catering since I was a child (in one way or another), but started more regularly about 15 years ago. I took over the organization from Joyce Grey about 4 years ago. 2. What do you love most about it? I really enjoy being backstage and being part of the opera community. It’s very exciting watching rehearsals turn into a great production. 3. What is your biggest challenge? Finding new volunteers. We are looking forward to new volunteers join our group. If you wanted to help out back stage call the Calgary Opera box office at 403 462 7286 and let them know you want to volunteer with back stage catering. They’ll connect you to me! 4. What do you love about opera? I love the music and the beautiful voices. It touches my soul. 5. What do you love about Calgary Opera? The Calgary Opera is a wonderful place to volunteer, everyone is so friendly and welcoming and I feel like I am part of the family when I am there. Not to mention the incredible singing I get to hear every night! Thank you to Jennifer, and her amazing group of volunteers for helping the cast and crew of all our mainstage productions get through those long rehearsal days and nights.
