H SKEETERS, FROM PG 26 on May 14, hosting the Lancaster Barnstormers, and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in a four-game series over Labor Day weekend (Sept. 1-4). The 140-game ALPB schedule is divided into two 70-game halves, with the first half ending on Sunday, July 2, and the regular season ending on Sunday, Sept. 17. The winners of each half of play make the playoffs. In the event one team wins both halves, a wild card team – the one with the next-best record in the division – advances. The eight-team league is divided into two divisions, Liberty and Freedom. Both 2017 Division Championship Series matchups will take place the week of Sept. 18 with the Atlantic League Championship Series occurring the week of Sept. 25. Opening Day on April 20 will bring a lot of excitement for fans as the champions are presented their rings, along with replica rings given to fans. Full details are being worked out at the time of this writing in February, but it will be a day and a weekend Skeeters fans will not want to miss. Going into the 2017 season, the Skeeters are building on the core from last year’s title team. Central to that was inking Manager Gary Gaetti to a one-year contract extension. Gaetti, the only manager in franchise history, was hired as the club’s inaugural manager in 2011 and will be starting his sixth year with the Skeeters. Under Gaetti’s leadership, the Skeeters became the first team to go 6-0 in the playoffs and ended the 2016 campaign with 10 straight wins. The team has reached the league playoffs in three of five seasons, including two Championship Series appearances (2014, 2016).

Gaetti in his five years as manager has compiled a 381-318 (.545) regular season record. The 2013 campaign was a recordbreaking year compiling a 95-45 overall record and he was named the Atlantic League Manager of the Year in just his second season as manager. Gaetti is a veteran of 20 major league seasons as a player with the Minnesota Twins, California Angels, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox. Returning for his fifth season as a Skeeter is player/coach Travis Scott. Scott is a catcher and first baseman and a former ALPB All-Star MVP. Outfielder Rene Tosoni, who played with the Minnesota Twins in the 2011 season, is returning this year. Other signings were pending at the time of this writing.
