CLUBS

West Country Club 2012 started off on a sad note with the death of long standing club member Brian Dyer. Brian and Margaret were regulars at club events and the shows, his enthusiasm and sense of humour will be greatly missed. The club ran 5 prime lamb competitions at Sedgemoor, Exeter, South Molton, Truro and Holsworthy markets with Holsworthy attracting 13 entries. Social events in the Spring included skittle matches against the Hampshire Downs and the Charollais. The Spring Meeting was an interesting insight into Philip Derryman’s trip to New Zealand and competing in the 1st World Young Shepherds competition.

Shows The County shows were strongly supported: • Devon County saw Mike Waycotts aged ewe take Breed and Interbreed honours. • Bath & West had Robert Holmes shearling ewe take Breed Champion and Roberts ewe and ram lamb also taking the Overall Interbreed pairs honours. • Royal Cornwall saw Ross Lawrence take the Breed Championship with a ram lamb. • Dorset County Show had Ross Lawrence crowned Champion this time with a ewe lamb.

Holland and Kate. A look at Richard’s flock, some stock judging and a super BBQ on a rare sunny Sunday.

Sales Sales saw good prices for good sheep, the club’s sales at Exeter and Sedgemoor had Robert Holmes winning at both. Trade at Exeter was good but Sedgemoor coincided with some rare haymaking weather and was difficult. The wet summer however was excellent news if you were a liver fluke, this was hopefully addressed by an autumn meeting sponsored by Novartis, Saul Harvey gave a good presentation on the control of both worms and fluke. Club member Dean Nelmes made the final of the Intermediate Golden Shears competition held at the World Shearing Championship in Masterton NZ finishing 4th. Autumn finished off with our annual Ewe and ewe lamb sale which saw Philip Brooks win the William Coe memorial trophy, the trade was solid with Robin Irwin topping at 600 guineas. Deserving of a mention is Rob Holmes on winning the Western Area and being runner up in the Keeble Cup and receiving a Certificate of Merit for his ewe lambs in the National Competition.

Congratulations to Lydia, William and Horace Hopper and Anna Reddaway for doing well in the young handler classes.

Special thanks must go to all our sponsors for their continued support.

June saw a huge turnout of members for the summer gathering kindly hosted by Richard
