Not The Chairman’s Chat From The Secretary This October has been a particularly difficult month for the SAM Committee and the membership. The sudden and tragic passing of our member, Observer, Committee member, and friend, Stephen Bingham was a shock to us all. Our thoughts and condolences are with his partner and family who are trying to come to terms with their loss. It was ironic that the club had had a Charity run for the Support Group for the Somersham Ward at Ipswich Hospital the same weekend that Steve was taken to the hospital and in the ward where he died a few days later. The Committee are in contact with Steve’s family and we will advise the membership as soon as the funeral details are decided by the family. There was a second charity run on Saturday 22nd October to Kings Lynn in aid of SANDS (Still birth and Neonatal Death) and there are full details of this worthy charity on the SAM Events Calendar. With 17 riders a total of £110 was raised for the charity on the day. At the October Group Night Les Smith gave the members some hints & tips on the new website that is now available to all members. There are still a few glitches to resolve but if you have any issues please contact Les. At the same meeting Bryan Duncan gave a brief resume´ of the response to the Member’s Survey. There is a report in this magazine for those that did not attend. I have returned recently from a trip to France, Switzerland and Italy (by train). We did something similar around the Alps near the Eiger three years ago at the same time in October and there was extensive snow. This time, nearer the Matterhorn, we had temperatures in the 20s and only snow on the highest peaks. On top of that we came home with Covid. As a result planning any immediate further trips are currently on hold. Recently, someone asked when I first took up motorised two-wheel riding. At the time we lived in a small terraced council house in Sutton, Surrey. My brother had a pretty basic Vespa 125 and had purchased a BSA Bantam (ex-post office telegram bike) and refurbished it. He did this in the small back garden and The SAM Observer November 2022

then had to manoeuvre it through the house when it was finished. I was nearly 16 so I decided to buy the scooter (£45). We had a very short path to the front door but I decided to practice using the gears/clutch/brakes along the path. With my confidence growing I was able to move slowly and almost managed to get my feet on the foot brake before I nudged the front step. I then decided to start from the kerb to give a longer run up the path. After a few more moves the inevitable happened. I went straight up the front steps through the small lobby and into the sitting room….. After that I practiced on the road outside having bought the second hand parka, fur collar, foxtails and chrome mirrors carriers etc. It looked good but the weight reduced its top speed ….. that was a good thing. Looking from the windows (not much else to do with Covid) it seems the warm weather is hanging on even if there is some dampness around. We have had a great summer but I think it’s time to put the lining inside the jacket and prepare for autumn/winter riding. We have a couple of social rides in November to La Hogue and Horningsea that I am looking forward to (see the SAM calendar for details). Remember you can still join us without booking but it is helpful if you do then we can make sure there are sufficient ride leaders and staff at the venue. Maybe we will see you there.

SAM Theory Evenings As most of you know, on the 4th Wednesday evening every month, SAM holds its monthly Theory Evening. Based on an ever revolving subject list of important rider skills these nights are an informal evening of facts and lively banter all aimed at improving your ride based on the information in the Advanced Rider Course Logbook. Each session covers one of the four main topic areas; Overtaking Cornering
Planning & Positioning Gears & Acceleration
Mainly aimed at Associates going through the course, these evenings are also a good way for full members to brush up on their theory and add their experiences and questions to the session. The great benefit of attending these sessions in the classroom means it saves time on the road, covering theory and has the added advantage of an opportunity to discuss any issues you may have generally on your Advanced Rider Course. Next theory night meeting will be November 26th 2022. 19:30 ~ 22:00.

Stephen Bingham 1965-2022 At the October Group Night the SAM Committee reported the tragic news that one of our members, Steve Bingham, had sadly passed away after a brief illness. Steve had been a SAM member since 2011, passing his test in 2012 with Paul Griffiths as his Observer. He became a Ride Leader, then an Observer in 2019 and joined the Committee in 2021. He was also a member of SERVSC It was ironic that the club had had a Charity run for the Support Group for the Somersham Ward at Ipswich Hospital the same weekend that Steve was taken to the hospital and it was in that ward where he died a few days later. Steve and his partner Shana have 5 children. The Committee are in contact with Steve’s family and we will advise the membership as soon as the funeral details are decided by the family. The not so famous 5 go to North Yorkshire The 5 riders consisted of 3 BMW’s piloted by Squadron Leader Hill, Sergeant Major Bob and Luftwaffe Steve, then we have 1 green Ninja Rob and the newbie of the pack KTM Jerry. So the KTM 1290 Adventure S with Tech pack and Adaptive Radar Cruise is up against the tried and test 1250 BMW pack. This will be interesting over the week, my money is on the newbie……. But that’s just my view. The green Ninja looks good on the main A and B roads but will it be at its limit on the rough stuff? In true SAM tradition we all meet up in a Tesco’s carpark before setting off on the main roads and a plan to take the back roads from Grantham onwards, led by Squadron leader Hill. Did I mention the KTM Radar Cruise control? It’s brilliant better than my car….. Something the Ninja is lacking, not sure the BMW has adaptive Radar? The Wheatsheaf Inn Carperby near Leyburn is our destination with good normal food and beer on tap….. We have been assigned a table for the week and the girls take care of us with plenty of fluids. As a newbie I didn’t know any of the crew apart from Squadron Leader, who was my associate. I had met the Ninja Rob one Saturday during a dexterity and control ride. Rob had the Ninja in a submissive manoeuvre at one point which was a surprise. These Kawasaki’s can get out of line from time to time. I helped him pick it up. Day 1. So excited to get The SAM Observer November 2022

the KTM out on the adventure in the North York Dales, as I haven’t been to this part of the country. The KTM is made for this with chassis and engine power modes which can be changed on the fly. Luftwaffe Steve is leader for Tan Hill and we set off. The scenery is fantastic from the off and I’m loving it through the twisty lanes and small villages. A quick U-turn follow by a quick left finds us in a Co-op carpark…….. it’s not as big as Claydon Co-op but this is a Yorkshire village so what do you expect. The next left finds us running over the cattle grid and into the dales. Now that’s more like it with pretty sheep grazing next to the road…… something Sergeant Bob and Ninja Rob will be in deep discussion later that night. When touring I like to take loads of pictures and start on the run up through the dales to Tan Hill pub….. Highest pub in England, which has its own snow plough for obvious reasons. I let the guys pass and try to get a picture with them riding in it, Sergeant Bob waves with the Victory sign as he goes passed, I’m sure he’s giving me some encouragement. Tan Hill pub is a great pub with a fire alight and beer on tap…….. But we are here for an adventure and our next stop is for lunch – Hawes is our next destination with Luftwaffe Steve still leading. We take the road off Tan Hill followed by another Uturn……. I’m sure the Luftwaffe is on a reconnaissance mission…. A quick stop with Squadron leader wanting to take pictures of his own….. I thought I was the official photographer??? Squadron leader wants a picture of each rider as they run down around a corner heading on the right course. 1st is Luftwaffe Steve followed by Sergeant Bob and close behind Ninja Rob. By the time I run down around the corner, Rob has the Ninja in a submission manoeuvre again with Sergeant Bob assisting. I stop and take a picture of Squadron leader only to turn back again and find Rob has the Ninja down again……. He really is trying his best to show it who’s boss….. The SAM Observer November 2022

In Hawes we find an old favourite café for lunch and tea…... I’m getting the picture there’s always plenty of cafés on trips like these. 1st though we head to Kirkby Stephens to refuel the thimble tank of the Ninja…. The KTM and I think the BMW have a large tanks with 200 mile range, ideal for adventures like this. During lunch it’s agreed our next route will take us past the Ribble viaduct. When we return to the bikes from lunch, word has obviously got out there is a KTM Adventure S about, drawing a small crowd…… and why not with its bright colour and modern look and abundance of technology….. Heated grips, heated seat, big colour display and easy intuitive menu for bike setup. The road to Ribble is fast and the pace picks up for a bit of fun with Squadron leader up front followed by newbie KTM…… did I mention on the KTM you can change suspension mode to Road on the fly, which stiffens everything for a more sportier ride. At the viaduct I notice Ninja Rob taking a shine to the KTM. Perhaps some encouragement is needed, so I take the opportunity to point out its features…… a small text can’t be any harm to our local KTM dealer to prepare one for when Ninja Rob next pays a visit. The day has been brilliant and the KTM has shown the BMW pack it can stand its own…. Turns out my room-mate Ninja Rob and I have quite a bit in common…. Both fathers were in the RAF, we both know Telecoms and we both like the KTM……… I’m sure he said he really likes the KTM. During our evening meal we discuss the day whilst replenishing our fluids, we might have mentioned once or twice how Rob had the Ninja in submission…….. if he had a KTM it does come with hand-guards to protect the clutch and brake The SAM Observer November 2022

levers in the event of an offie……Plus you can add further protection with engine bars to protect the fairings during the submission manoeuvre which he clearly likes to practice. Day 2. We plan to stay within the North York Dales as the weather is due to change for the worst. Squadron leader takes us up over the dales thru Buttertubs pass. Fantastic views and great roads yet again….. Time for a stoppie for more photo’s…. Sergeant Bob waves encouragement again….. He really makes you feel part of the crew. The KTM loves this type of adventure with engine and chassis modes set for rain mode, which softens the engine input for reassurance control. We stop off in Kikby Stephens for lunch and find a lovely café….. See day ruled by café’s, though I’m not complaining, I can drink tea all day long. I must say everyone we meet is really welcoming and friendly throughout our adventures in Yorkshire. That evening, again great meal and plenty of fluids taken on-board. Words got out in Carperby the Wheatsheaf has some amusement for the locals and they ask us where we have been and what’s planned for our next day’s adventure. Day3. Weather dictates a run to the east coast through Pickering and on to Scarborough. We stop off to say hello to Derek from the Mathewson’s on the tele. He is just the same as on the tele talking to all the old boys and happy for a few photos with the Suffolk crew. Unfortunately we are unable to see what’s up for sale in the auction house as this is closed. Quick cuppa before we head off to Scarborough. Scarborough we head direct for the sea front for a breather and then up to Olivers Mount race track….. so tiny but this is where my idol use to race… the great Barry Sheene, among other great racers. Quick visit to Robin Hood bay and Whitby before we head home, the weather has caught us with heavy rain over the dales….. Ninja Rob and Sergeant Bob each have some flirtatious encounters of which they compare over the evening meal. During the ride back in the dark and rain the KTM is faultless with its 6 axis IMU to keep me upright plus corner lights to keep me safe. Luftwaffe Steve follows the KTM tail lights as the ride is dark and wet. Other guests in the Wheatsheaf have now joined us for the evening amusement with Sergeant Bob giving good debate during the conversation and Ninja Rob taking about “Orbs”….. You’ll have to take that up direct with Rob. Day4. We head for the Lakes. The crew have had a vote the Newbie to be leader to Windermere…… keep up…… no that’s not the attitude to take newbie! We stop off in a carpark at Windermere with the facilities charging 50p to relieve ourselves…. Sergeant Bob is Not happy! After another stop for tea/coffee we head off for the pass of all passes…… Hardknott 30% gradient! Having climbed Wynose pass I stop for a few photos….. Sergeant Bob waves again…… such great encouragement…. At the base of Hardknott a small car turns around and leaves us to climb the pass…. 30% with tight corners…… we leave time between us and make our way only to have Ninja Rob stopping half way up……. Sergeant Bob has further encouragement but we are all good…. The KTM with its Tech pack has Hill control….We make it to the top for group photos.

have to take my hat off to Ninja Rob with those tight turns up Hardknott, goes to show he’s a good rider although we still give him stick…. Should have had a KTM…. And can still have one, its ready to collect. We head back over the dales and the scenery is fantastic until we hit the main roads back to Devils bridge for a breather.

We decide to have one more pass on the way back to Hawes pass the Ribble viaduct….. Squadron leader is up front and the pace is brisk….. KTM is right behind faultless. We get caught behind some cows on the road to the Hotel in Carperby…… Ninja Rob wasn’t too happy when the road was clear….. Apparently the acceleration of the KTM flicked some good old Yorkshire substance into is helmet. Day5. Head for Mattlock as a stop over to home. The weather is ……… a monsoon…… it follows us all the way to Rotherham and all our Gortex gear is soaked….. We might as well have swum there… The ride is miserable and the squadron leader finds some relief in a retail park Costa…… we basically waddle like ducks up to the counter to order refreshments and something to eat. Those toilet hand driers really come into their own before we head for the final part of the journey. Sheffield proves to be heavy traffic and we get split up as a group…. Luckily I have my Google maps primed with the destination with Ninja Rob and Luftwaffe Steve with me and we all meet up at the final hotel…… quite posh for us a I feel but they welcome us and is comfy for the final night. The night is finished off with the mandatory curry and few beers. Conclusion of the trip…….. Fantastic! Great fun and good company. Thanks to all of the crew for accepting the newbie on the trip. Yes count me in on the next trip.

SAM Membership Survey You will recall that we asked members to complete a survey of SAM, its activities and operations. It is only right and proper, therefore, that we give you both the results of the survey and what, if possible, SAM can do to resolve any issues raised in this survey. We apologise for the delay in offering this response, but it has taken time to collate the replies and come up with meaningful responses. At the time of sending out the survey we had 267 members and it would have been unrealistic to expect 267 replies. Nevertheless, we had a terrific response with well over 60% of the membership replying – so well done and thank you. It would be both impossible and impractical to attempt to answer each individual question or comment, so we have grouped similar comments together under various subject headings as follows: Do you get value from your membership 11% said NO, 89% said YES The biggest single comment in this section involved the allocation of Observers. It is always a challenge to be able to ensure that every Associate has access to the Observer they want, on the day that they want them. Paul Ballard (our Chief Observer) and his team spend a considerable amount of time to ensure that delays in allocating Associates to an Observer are kept to a minimum. We would ask Associates to remember that our Observers are volunteers and do have a life outside of SAM. Whilst we endeavour to take the individual commitments and requirements of the Associate into account, if the Observer allocated has a prior engagement on that particular date or time, there is nothing that SAM can do about this, so please bear this in mind. Any Associate who feels that they have been waiting an excessive amount of time to have an Observer allocated to them can contact Geoff Scott (Associate Co-Ordinator) direct to moves things along. Do you attend Group Night? 59% said NO, 41% said YES (although not every month) Reasons for non-attendance can be grouped under four main headings: Location The SAM Observer November 2022

Food at the location Speakers Other members Location (including food at the location) Whichever venue we choose, its location is bound to be inconvenient to a proportion of our members – fact! The ideal venue needs; Adequate seating for 65+ and a top table Adequate parking (and not on grass/mud) Convenient for at least 60% of our members Complete A/V equipment Availability same day mid-week every month Has a Bar Serves food on an ad-hoc basis Is Affordable Has a small room for meetings, training etc. So far, finding this “dream location” has proved to be impossible. The days of the original Fynn Valley, are long gone. For those of you who can remember it, Fynn Valley was large, cheap to hire and had food available. Unfortunately, they down-sized and stopped doing food. Every venue that we have tried since can supply some of the above criteria, but not all. The current location costs SAM £3000 per year, so you can see that we are not trying to do it on the cheap! Having analysed the post codes of our members, 63% live in the immediate area of Ipswich, whereas only 24% come from west of Stowmarket. In fact, North and North East Essex alone supply almost as many members as does West Suffolk. So it could be argued that we should be looking east for a potential venue, rather than west! However, we are always open to suggestions for an alternative venue. But please, don’t just drive past a big hotel that is personally convenient to you and say “yeah, that’ll do”. If you think that it is suitable, please, please, go in and inquire about prices, availability, etc. If you still think that it is suitable, tell anybody on the committee and we will follow it up – that’s a promise! It is incredibly hard to find speakers who are prepared to come out at night and who do not want to be paid gold bars for doing it. Your committee is well aware of the desire for an interesting speaker and it is a subject that occupies a large part of our time in committee. The comments were made that it would be advantageous to have prior knowledge as to who the speaker was? In future, all information regarding speakers will be on the website. This has the advantage of being more up to date than the magazine and can be instantly updated. Other Members The comment that SAM can be too “clicky” was made by a small percentage of members. This is unfortunate because we cannot order people to be friendly. There can’t be many clubs that have not had this criticism levelled at them at some time or other. Friends tend to congregate with friends. We do have a “Welcome Table” and anyone who feels left out should join Brian Ellis (Caring SAM) at the Welcome Table and we guarantee you will be warmly received. Bryan Duncan (Treasurer), who normally sits at the door, will be only too pleased to point you in the direction of the Welcome Table. Do you participate in Sunday Breakfast runs? Comments regarding attendance/non-attendance were as follows: I don’t like the Booking System We must have a booking system because the venues want an idea of how many to expect and SAM needs to know how many Ride Leaders will be required. It’s hard to plan a ride-out when you don’t know if there will be 10 attending, or 40! We know that it is an additional complication, but booking at least gives both the venue and ourselves a MINIMUM attendance figure. However, if you decide at the last moment that you wish to attend any ride, you are welcome to just turn up at the meeting point anyway. Run Length – too short, too long! We acknowledged previous comments that the runs were too short and so recently we have had longer runs. Only to receive criticism that the runs were too long. It’s hard to strike a balance with so many differing expectations. The SAM Observer November 2022

Why can’t we have two runs on the same day – one long, one short? The logistical problems associated with organising two such runs on the same day would be immense – and again, don’t forget that Ride Leaders are also volunteers and not always available “on tap”. I don’t like riding in groups Sorry, we can’t help you here, we are a club after all. The runs are too organised The alternative is chaos! We’re not just a bunch of guys who happen to meet up at the same place and the same time and ride off into the distance! Do you feel the Committee do a good job? 2% said NO, 98% said YES Enough said – we do our best! (And thank you) What issues should the Committee address? Extra Training Continuous Training Assessment Your Committee are well aware that training does not stop when you have passed your advanced test. This is why in 2022 we have introduced a program called “Continuous Training Assessment”. This program is run by our Continuous Training Co-Ordinator, Geoff Scott. Geoff will be only too pleased to arrange or to take you on an assessment ride to assess your riding ability and the good thing is that it is completely free of charge! This is currently advertised in the SAM magazine, but sadly to date we have had very little response. Again, all you have to do is ask, even if you want to bring your riding up to Fellowship standard! Alternatively, if you would prefer to go out with a particular Observer, just let Geoff know and he will endeavour to arrange that for you as well. Geoff is also interested in any suggestions relating to further training, maybe a long weekend away or more group training. Just give him a call and have a chat. We are aware that these are hugely popular and we would like to hold more of them, but they do take a lot of organising and it does require a lot of Observers to be available – bearing in mind that they may already be committed to taking individuals out on normal one-to-one training rides. We will try, however, to hold more. Theory Evenings We hold classroom sessions on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Boardroom at KWMCC which anybody can attend. Dexterity days – why are they only open to Associates? The concept of “Dexterity Days” (aka Slow Riding), was originally conceived so as to be of assistance to Associates to help them pass their test. For this reason it was only deemed necessary to make it available to Associates. However, your committee acknowledges that this skill is beneficial to everybody and it is intended to be open to full members at the first and last sessions of the year (March and October). As this is an activity which is part of the advanced test, the bias must remain towards Associates. Historically we have allowed full members to attend, but this is usually based on demand (8 maximum). This does mean, however, that booking through Matthew Barker (phone number in the magazine) is essential as spaces are limited. We are also hoping to get booking for this activity on Eventbrite next year which will make it easier for all. Returning from Ride Outs Some members were surprised that there is not an organised return ride after we have reached the various destinations? Whilst we may meet up in one location to start the ride, we may all live far from the assembly point and it might make the job of the Ride Leader twice as hard if he was expected to go back to the starting point every time! Bearing in mind that there will be five/six people in your group and at least three groups, there is a high likelihood that there will be more than one person (possibly the Ride Leader himself) heading back in your direction. Whilst you are all together at the café, etc., why not ask? There are usually a number of Ride Leaders and, sometimes, even an Observer who will be more than happy to guide you back in the general direction that you need to go – just ask! Keeping Members This is a subject that your committee agonises over at each meeting. The fact is that many people want the confidence that passing their advanced test gives them – perhaps for their job, but have no interest in taking part in the social side of a club. It would appear to be that if we can keep a member for three years, then they will probably stay much longer. But don’t forget that there is always a natural rate of attrition in any club. Attracting New Members Whilst it may not be possible to keep every existing member, it is essential that we are able to recruit new members. To this end, your Committee has invested in the necessary technology to enable us to sign-up new members on the spot at the various events which we attend. This is a vast improvement on the previous situation where we would send a prospective member away armed, we think, with the necessary information hoping that they were interested enough to actually apply at a later date. Some do, some don’t. But already, because of this investment, 2022 has proved to be one of the best years for a long time for recruitment. In conclusion, this survey has proved to be immensely helpful in finding out how SAM is viewed from within the club. We have attempted to answer as many questions within the various categories as we could. However, if your individual comment has not been included/addressed, we apologise, but we could not address them all, but we do hope that you can see that we do take your comments very seriously. If there is anything that we have missed here but it is still an important issue to you, please approach any of the committee and we will deal with your concern in confidence. Ride safe

I spoke to one rider and he has decided to give up riding as he was fearful of a deer jumping out in front of him. I like pictures to be separate to your articles because I can make them bigger or small to fill the page
