3-CHIMNEYS BREAD FACTORY Social Inclusion

Project Name - 3-Chimneys Bread Factory Location - Redfern, NSW 107 Project UNSW Graduation Project Semester 1 & 2, 2022

PROJECT BRIEF-

As with many other rapidly urbanising towns and cities, Sydney is witnessing a gentrification of inner-city ares. While often bringing improved services and quality of life, gentrification also often leads to displacement of original residents, with those remaining often marginalised and socially isolated.

A counter to this is inclusive neighbourhoods, wherin iso lated and marginalised groups feel they are equal co-own ers and users of places and services. Underpinning inclu sive neighbourhoods is a concpet of social inclusion. This studio concers how architects and architecture can con tribute to social inclusion.

‘what is an architectural response that meaningfully builds inclusion?

Rising Issues

over 65 experience exclusion – more than any other age group.

Public housing tenants experience social exclusion at more than twice the rate of people living elsewhere.

More than half of the Australians who have a disability or long-term health condition experience social exclusion.

Nothing brings to life again a forgotten memory like a fragrance-Christopher Poindexter

We can associate smells and taste with time and place, recall pleasant times or places, or recall loved ones, provoking feelings of nostalgia or contentment.

Baking over a fire or in an oven induces a sense of comfort, security , and family.

In addition, the aroma of baking bread triggered objectively more positive, help ful, kinder, and altruistic behavior in people, not just subjectively pleasant be haviour.

Multi-Unit Housing

The potential of the whole

Name - Multi-Unit Housing Location - 117 Sutherland St, Mascot NSW 2020

UNSW Design Studio Semester 1,

Project Brief-

The project requires the design of three dwellings. The assumption is that the dwellings will be built under the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) and will provide subsidised rental accommodation for low to moderate income earners who otherwise would have difficulty accessing the private rental housing market.

The three buildings comprise:

• One dwelling, able to accommodate two types of households (not at the same time) – a couple, a single person (interior floor area 55-70Projectsq.m.).
