Welcome to the October issue of the Spotlight. I can't believe that it is October already. I am not looking forward to the darker nights and the clocks changing. It feels like we have had no real summer at all before the colder weather hits us again. The last issue I was talking about summer holidays and the schools going back. Now it's nearly time for the October break and Halloween. Next thing will be Christmas decorations in the shops!! Stollen in Christmas packaging has already appeared in our supermarket - and been bought and eaten!

I know it seems too early to be mentioning the 'C' word but before you know it the whole christmas tree and tinsel thing will be here. For those businesses and community groups who have a Christmas focus then my November and December issues are the ones you will be waiting for. Whether it be Christmas Trees, Christmas Fairs, Christmas Shopping Nights or Events, Pantos, Shows, Art Exhibitions, Gift Vouchers ......... The list is endless and all are welcome.

A Life Lesson On Trust & Faith

Recently in the media I’ve been hearing a lot about words such as your Higher Self, Soul, Spirit, the Divine Order, but what do they all actually mean? We’ve very little tangible evidence in our everyday lives that relate to the supposed power, peace & meaningfulness that they give us. To many people they are just words.

Myself, I’m a very spiritual being - though I didn’t used to be. However, in my early 50s, life took an unexpected & painful path for me, and in order to try to help myself, I explored the possibility that there may be more to life than just my day-to-day existence. Someone mentioned that I should get in touch with my Higher Power. I had no idea what they were talking about!

I was in a very bleak place – full of anger, injustice, resentment and pain at what had occurred. I couldn’t make sense of why such an injustice had happened to me. I felt that I was a good and decent person and that I was entitled to a certain type of life but suddenly it wasn’t happening for me. And I got angry about losing what I thought I should have! What I believed I deserved. And I got really angry that the life I had been leading & loving had been cruelly taken away. I was in a place of pure torment & pain.

So then I thought into it more, and realised that I had been believing that I was living a safe life that I had power over. So naturally that belief had given me a sense of peace, control and empowerment. Nothing smug about that but my life had been happily rolling along with all its ups and downs. Many of our lives are similar. But the reality is that life can change in an instant. And should that happen, then all our systems, beliefs, procedures, controls etc – the parameters of our lives - are shattered and we start to look at life differently

This is what happened to me. My 5 senses were craving justice, fairness, immediate gratification – but that was never going to happen. I had to go deeper in order to go to a higher altitude. It may sound mad, but when I accepted that there was a bigger picture at play here that was not being revealed to me at that time, and when I turned myself over to trust in a Higher Order, I was able to forgo all the misery that my 5 senses were crying out about, and I put it all out to trust. That is what ended my dark night.

And sure enough – my life did change for the better. Much better.

Here are 3 of the lessons I learned:

• No one is entitled to anything on this planet.

• It’s impossible to be in prison unless we put ourselves there.

• We are as happy as we intend to be.

Top tips for selling in Autumn

Thinking of selling your home this autumn? It is a good time of year, with potential buyers longing to be in their new home by Christmas.

It is that time of year again; the nights draw in, sunsets split the sky into spectacular colours and rich leaves blanket the grass. With all this magic going on outside, it only makes sense to bring some of it indoors - here are some tips to transform your home this autumn and show it at its best:

Embrace autumn’s mood with soft and low lighting, which can create a warm and comfortable amount of light throughout your home to complement its features. If your rooms have a dimmer switch, opt for lower settings to capture the cosiness of autumn’s dark evenings. Candles are also a particularly nice addition to your rooms, grouped together and lit in time for viewings.

In other areas, a brighter light can work, so switch up your bulbs. New ‘daylight’ bulbs in the bathroom or kitchen can transform a space with a minimal amount of effort and allow prospective purchasers to see your home in all its glory. This is so beneficial on a dull autumn day.

Remember, though, that nothing lights a room better than natural light. For daytime viewings, pull the curtains open wide, roll up the blinds, and let that light flood in. This will also allow viewers to see the garden or views from the windows, which can be a real selling point. As Autumn progresses our focus is switched from our gardens to our homes and it is important to show buyers how comfortable and cosy our rooms are, where we will be spending a lot of our time over the next few months. Sofas dressed with warm throws and cushions help to create a relaxed feel in the room, with rugs and candles adding to the ambience. Light your open fire or wood burner, turn on your heating if need be. Buyers can

then visualise themselves on a dark night, relaxing with a movie.

One of the best ways to display autumn’s brilliant hues in your home is through decorative flowers, foliage, and berries, bringing the outside in.

It is still incredibly important to maintain your garden if you are thinking of selling up. Even if you simply sweep and rake up all the fallen leaves before people come to view your property. Spruce up your pots with winter flowering pansies and some evergreen plants to keep your entrance looking at its best and maybe even an autumn wreath on the door. You can create an autumnal outdoor relaxing area, with outdoor rugs, heaters, a fire pit, and weather-resistant furniture, add some warm throws, cushions, and fairy lights to complete the look. This will look lovely for an evening viewing.

An Article From Deidre Brock MP

Nestled at the corner of Newhaven Road and Hawthornvale, James Hardie’s workshop is a treasure trove of history and craftsmanship.

Every artifact and piece of equipment tells a story of dedication and restoration. As you step inside, three elegant wooden chairs catch your eye, hung from the ceiling above an impressive array of vintage tools adorning the walls. The shelves are stacked with spare slabs of wood and the workbench is strewn with timber, screws and nails fully recycled from items that are over 300 years old. On a nearby table, you'll spot a Singer sewing machine, a tin of Mansion Polish Wax, and a type of hot glue, the use of which was apparently pioneered by the ancient Egyptians.

Established in 1976, J & J Hardie Antiques is a family-run business specialising in the restoration of furniture and family heirlooms, as well as the preservation of valuable collections, using time-honoured methods such as French polishing.

Mr Hardie initially served as his father’s apprentice, and together, they worked on projects such as the Royal Collection at Holyrood House in the 1990s. More recently, he carried out a decade of work at Dumfries House in Cumnock, restoring mirrors, floors and banisters to entire rooms, as well as the renowned Thomas Chippendale Bookcase.

Witnessing Mr Hardie at work is a delight partly, I think, because highly skilled artisans of his kind have become increasingly scarce. Although Scottish crafts are internationally celebrated, the diminishing number of traditional craftspeople has long been a concern.

In an era marked by globalised mass production and consumption, the passing of these skills down the generations has dwindled. Thankfully, though, there are growing efforts to promote and preserve Scotland's craft sector.

One such initiative is MAKE Learn, led by MAKE and Craft Scotland which aims to ensure every young person is given the opportunity to learn through craft and to develop material skills. The campaign calls for a greater focus in our school on teaching using tactile materials, alongside a focus on technology, and raising awareness of the benefits of craft teaching.

The value of learning about and putting craft skills into practice is well-proven. It not only preserves our material heritage but enhances motor skills, dexterity, and problem-solving abilities while connecting us to our cultural roots.

Through Skills Development Scotland, the Scottish Government is creating more opportunities to pursue careers in the sector. Modern Apprenticeships are now available in Skills for Craft Businesses, Wood and Timber, signmaking and glass making, to name just a few.

Annual bursaries are also available to craft makers at all stages of their career. The Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards, established by Creative Scotland, offers grants of up to £750 to help practitioners with their creative development.

Family businesses like J & J Hardie's might not be as common as they once were, but I'm hopeful we can still nurture and inspire new generations of craftsmen and women to carry forward the legacy of artistry and heritage found in Mr Hardie's workshop.

A Delicious Kale Recipe (Yes, Really)

We all know kale is good for us, but what’s the tastiest thing to do with it? Not throw it in the bin and eat some cake instead (husband’s suggestion), but try this easy recipe and you’ll never look back.

Kale is a nutritional superstar due to the amounts of vitamins A, B6, C, K, folate, fibre, carotenoids and manganese it contains. It grows well in our Scottish climate and can overwinter, but may need protection from birds and pests. It’s an ornamental plant in a mixed border in the garden, or grow it in a big container.

Even husband willingly eats kale when it’s crispy and ‘cheesy’. In fact, we quite often eat a whole bunch between us fresh from the oven. Even Coco the fitness pug loves it!

‘Cheesy’ Kale Crisps

Ingredients

• Big bunch of whole kale leaves

• Rapeseed or olive oil

• Nutritional yeast: available from a health food shop, full of goodness

• Onion flavoured sea salt: or any other good quality salt

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 140 ⁰ C.

2. Wash the kale in a spinner or colander, and thoroughly dry with a clean tea towel. Keep the leaves intact. Cut out the woody stems.

3. Massage a small amount of oil onto each leaf, remembering all the curly bits.

4 In a large bowl, combine the oiled leaves with 1 tsp of onion salt and 1 tbsp of nutritional yeast. You can adjust the seasonings to taste.

5. Lay out the seasoned leaves in a single layer in a large roasting tin. A silicon baking mat is useful for this.

6. Cook in the low oven, checking every 7 minutes or so to turn the leaves and also turn the tray around to ensure even drying. They are done when they are crispy, around 20 minutes depending on your oven.

Enjoy fresh!
