As this month’s cover suggests, July is a bowl of cherries when it comes to the arts. We’ve given space to ‘The Big Summer Trio’ (Medway Open Studios, Homespun and the lovely Cherry Picnic) and if outdoor theatre is your thing, we have that covered too. Where comedy is concerned, this is the month to catch some top-notch acts honing material in Work in Progress shows prior to taking them to the Edinburgh Festival. Enter Coral Brown, WOW’s new comedy listings compiler, who has put together a fantastic list. Lastly, congratulations to all involved in last month’s Fuse Medway Festival which, considering its constraints, was a triumph of imagination over budget. Emma Dewhurst is an actress, mother and the founder/editor of WOW. She has had a long and varied acting career, including stints at the National Theatre and in London’s West End. More recently she has worked in TV and film in order to concentrate on the important jobs of mothering and running WOW. Phil Dillon is a former Medway musician turned photographer who is best known for his work with bands such as Groovy Uncle, Theatre Royal, The Galileo 7, and Stuart Turner and the Flat Earth Society. He is also one of the team behind Homespun, Medway's independent music festival. Nick Walker is the director of Rochester Kino, screening contemporary world cinema and classic films at various venues around Medway and in London. Nick previously wrote for The Guardian, was director of National Schools Film Week and is a freelance writer, teacher and film cinema/festival programmer. This is Turner Contemporary’s stunning solo show by Grayson Perry casting a net over works past and present and roughly dividing them into three glorious rooms containing his unique, narrative ceramic pots (or ‘stealth bombs’); extraordinary etchings and drawings documenting an argumentative inner life; and, in the last, vast white room, his brighter than bright oversized contemporary tapestries. In recent years, Nucleus Arts have expanded their offer to the community at a dizzying rate and this is one of the happy upshots. opportunity to hear the man himself speak. Now there is! In support of Medway Open Studios, and concluding Sun Pier House Gallery’s ‘Heckel’s Horse: The Billy Childish Studio, Group exhibition’, the artist is hosting a free evening talk on Saturday 11 July (doors open 7pm). MAKING CONNECTIONS
The Sun Pier Gallery plays host to another great show in July, exploring creative connections between six paired artists from Medway, Swale, London and Surrey: Pam Dodds and David Cowley; Olivia Schlevogt and Alison Boyce; Alison Swan and Cathy Cullis. I find myself very drawn by the idea of these connections being the gel that binds the diverse works in this exhibition. 15-26 July. BETTY BLUE EYES
I have it now on pretty good authority (well, okay, from the pig’s Twitter account) that a pig from the school farm has indeed been granted a licence to grace the boards of the Hazlitt Theatre in some part of Valley Park school’s production of ‘Betty Blue Eyes’, the musical version of Alan Bennett’s ‘A Private Function’ with music and lyrics by Stiles & Drewe. This is a student production but if you’d like to be uplifted on the subject of young people, musicals and pigs, this is sthe show for you. 5

PROMENADE: AN ART FESTIVAL FOR SHEPPEY
Friday 24 July to Saturday 8 August Promenade, the Isle of Sheppey’s annual art festival, promises great things this year, with the launch of a new museum and a specially commissioned map of the area’s creative highlights The fifth Promenade festival starts on Friday 24 July with the launch of the 'Rose Cottage of Curiosities' from 3pm until 7pm, with all being welcome. Formally the Sheerness Heritage Centre, the popular community arts organisation Big Fish Arts were given the license to run the centre earlier this year, and a process of transformation has been taking place over past months, with input from several of Sheppey’s professional artists, including ‘Love Sheppey X’ founder, Laurie Harpum. The cottage has been re-dressed with some of its existing artefacts together with art works and curios from various artists inspired by this year’s Promenade theme, Monsters, Mermaids and Myths. Alongside the cottage launch, Island Projects, aka Nicole Mollett of the Kent Cultural Baton and Ideas Test Small
Experiments Ambassador, has commissioned a new creative map of Sheppey from Victoria McBride, which will be revealed for the first time during the afternoon. WOW has had a sneak preview, and it is gorgeous! (See next month’s issue). On Saturday 25 July there is a free open air concert by the UK Paper Silver Band at Beachfields in Sheerness at 5pm. I am told that last year it was very well attended and a terrific evening out. Take a chair and/or picnic blanket and a picnic if you fancy. On Sunday 26 July there is an opportunity for local creative people to make artworks inspired by the Dockyard Church, which is usually inaccessible due to its derelict condition. See this month’s News pages for details.
On Saturday 1 August there is an all day event in Sheerness town centre, which will be traffic free. Expect art and craft stalls, street performers and musicians and a 'Monsters, Mermaids and Myths' themed parade led by The Big Fish Band leaving the Beachfields area at 12 noon. There are lots of other events linked to The Promenade Festival which cover professional and amateur art and craft and heritage events across Sheppey. It offers a mix of emerging and established artists and welcomes guest performers from outside the area, and aims to be user friendly, a little bit different and welcoming to all comers – musicians and punters alike. Homespun is more like a fringe festival than a traditional music festival, taking place in some of the best and friendliest venues in Medway. It offers the opportunity to see a huge and diverse number of bands and artists up close and really engage in the live music experience. Why stand in a muddy field with your drink and wellies filling with rain/melting in the British summer sun (delete as applicable) when you can be mere feet away from the stage, the bar and proper plumbing at the same time? Exactly. WEDNESDAY 22 JULY The festival kicks off at the Barge in Gillingham on the evening of Wednesday 22 July with a set from Mark Morriss, front man with The Bluetones, who embarks on a 20th anniversary tour in September. This is a great opportunity to see an intimate show from a special talent for free, and is not to be missed. FRIDAY 23 JULY Thursday is a fallow day, in the Glastonbury tradition, as Homespun prepares to ramp up for its Friday night gigs. The Royal Function Rooms and Billabong in Rochester
offers a five star, two floor lineup headed by The Parade, who absolutely smashed it at Homespun last year, and Bristol band Spectres, who would seem to be on an exponential rise having recently released their first album ‘Dying’ on Sonic Cathedral. Also playing are Theatre Royal, The Love Family, Sleep Society and Words Beginning With X, making the gig something of a bargain at just £6 in advance or £8 on the door. Friday night also offers two free shows. Poco Loco in Chatham is hosting the excellent London based Afro/Heavy/Psych/Soul band Vodun along with a cracking line up of Frau Pouch, Wiremother, Allfather, Kill Rpnzl and The Reactor Core is Splendid. Alternatively, These Guilty Men can be seen at the Nag’s Head in Rochester, supported by Tiny Ghost and The Only Sun. SATURDAY 25 JULY Saturday is the busiest day of the festival, with seven events staggered throughout the day, all but two of which are free. The Good Intent in Rochester kicks off the live music during the afternoon with sets from Davey Malone and The Longtails, The Flowing and a host of others, while at the same time Seasonally Effected bring poetry and theatre to the proceedings at Dot Café in Rochester High Street. Situated between those two venues is the Granville Arms, where an afternoon of live music headed by Andy White and Clea Llwellyn is on offer.
From the mid-afternoon until late, the Nag’s Head is staging performances from, among others, Broken Banjo, The Shagmonroes and Stuart Turner & The Flat Earth Society, whilst at the same time, down the road at Poco Loco you can see visitors Rude Mechanicals and Sebastian Melmoth, as part of an eclectic line-up that also includes a set from quiet genius Chris Taylor in the guise of DIYOA. Also, in the evening, you might want to pop over to the Barge to see veteran local musician Nick Hughes front his charming new ensemble Wax Collector. AND HEADLINING…

This brings us to Saturday’s headline gigs. The Billabong Club will be hosting a powerful line-up, topped by Bear Vs Manero, a band seemingly always at the peak of its power, and Shitwife, once described as (and I paraphrase) “… a cross between Aphex Twin and Slayer”. Add to this sets from WhiteDevilWhiteDevil, Sweet Deals On Surgery, Screen Wives and Punching Swans and you’ve got quite a bill for your £8 entry fee. Upstairs in the Royal Function Rooms, Graham Day & The Forefathers will, in their words, be “… blasting out their muscular version of Medway garage-rock.” ™ Graham and Allan (Crockford) were in The Prisoners (1982-86), before forming The Prime Movers (later the Solarflares) with Wolf (Howard) in 1988. MEDWAY OPEN STUDIOS SAT 18 – SUN 26 JULY 2015 A LOVELY, FREE SUMMER ART TRAIL FROM ALLHALLOWS TO GILLINGHAM Over 100 Artists across 23 venues! One of Medway’s most popular homegrown art events, Medway Open Studios and Art Festival, is about to enter its fourth year. It is a huge credit to MOS founder, Medway resident Heather Burgess, that the Festival has doubled in size since its inception in 2012. She launched the event to shine a spotlight on the sheer scale of artist talent in the area, and to create something which would help to promote a positive image of Medway – both of which aims have been achieved each year of the festival’s life. If last month’s South East Open Studios whetted your appetite to visit more artists in their homes and studio environments, this is the event for you. This year there are more than 100 artists, both new and returning, taking part in MOS. They are spread across 23 venues, and you can find a digital Google map helping you to find their exact whereabouts on the MOS website. Each venue has its own opening times, so it’s worth planning your art trail route before you go. An interesting newcomer to the 2015 Festival this year is Miqui 1 Stop. Caroline is a stencil/street artist based at West End Studios in Chatham, who will be making ‘live’ street art on one of the large walls in the Sun Pier House car park, which will remain there as a permanent art piece. On Saturday 18 July between 11am – 4pm she will be painting the design in the car park for spectators to come and see and learn more about street art and her work.

Photographer Nikki Price has taken part in Medway Open Studios since it first began in 2012. WOW asked her what it felt like to open her studio doors: “At first, inviting strangers into my home was a big worry. I spent ages preparing, thinking about what photos I wanted to share and where to put them. I wondered would anyone even turn up? Luckily I was not alone: three other artists exhibited on our square. This was great, I felt supported and it brought more people to all our studios. I was stunned when over two hundred people visited over the weekend. I've met some lovely people, learnt from other artists and made new friends. One neighbour found out I was a photographer and donated loads of equipment, helping me turn my cellar into a darkroom. Another couple surprised me, asking if they could look round the rest of the house. They had lived there forty years ago and still recognised some of their DIY. Each year I give myself a project or challenge to complete. My favourite so far was 'Beards and Bellies', photos and writing by people about body image and self-esteem. I also enjoyed creating a series of modern fairytale portraits, working in film for the first time and processing the photos in my darkroom. This year I am working with my partner. I was stuck for ideas and he offered to write me some artist descriptions, they are all themed around quotes from 80s films, which I love. Born in 1976 in Lekhnath in Nepal, NB Gurung is becoming known globally as a leading watercolour artist with huge talent in acrylic painting too. His artistic passion began as a young child when he started copying images from school text books. His work is predominantly inspired by his beloved Nepal - he lives in Kathmandu – giving many of his paintings an added poignancy, as many of his originals are pre-earthquake. NB Gurung works closely with Grierson Publications and Gilbert & Clark, who are presenting the artist’s first UK exhibition of both originals and superb Giclee prints at Below 65 Gallery, Gilbert & Clark, High Street, Maidstone ME14 1SR, between 4 – 29 July.
