Elsewhere all sorts of cultural projects continue to thrive. Jaye Nolan is a freelance writer who runs the Rochester Literature Festival. She also works for Ideas Test, a programme aiming to increase arts participation for everyone in Swale and Medway. Passionate about music, theatre and dance, she shouts regularly at the television during reality shows. Anna Morell is a mother, a writer and an editor. THE LEGENDS RETURN Comedy legends Monty Python perform live on stage this month for the first time in 30 years at London’s 02 Arena - and everyone can see it! The performance is at 7pm on Sunday 20 July and is being broadcast live to cinemas around the globe, including our very own Odeons in Chatham and Maidstone. THE VINES CHERRY PICNIC This charming annual summer event in Rochester’s lovely park, The Vines, Crow Lane ME1 1RF takes place on Sunday 13 July from 1-4pm. On the same afternoon, in the pleasant garden of The Good Intent, Rochester, have a beer and a listen to the readers of Rochester Literature Festival’s Garden Poetry Party (1-5pm). This year confirmed wordsmiths include Sarah Hehir; Sam Fentiman-Hall; Oscar Dylan Rowe; Sophie Williams; Gordon Meade and of course RLF founder Philip Kane. There’s a short Open Mic (with the welcome addition of a microphone to aid projection); the lovely Word Shed will be present and there’s live music, too.

VOTE FOR THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD! The short films telling stories from the First World War in the ‘For the Fallen Film Challenge’ are screened at a Premiere screening at the Royal Engineers Museum on 17 July and at a second screening two days later, on Saturday 19 July at Blue Town Heritage Centre, where the specially commissioned Golden Poppy Awards will be awarded. You can have a say and vote for the People’s Choice Award at the Premiere Screening. Admission is free but booking is essential. See page 8 for details.

AND ACCESSIBLY BEYOND… When a small etching by Samuel Palmer was brought into the art studios at Goldsmiths College of Art in 1924 it sparked a mini revolt in the etching department. Two students, Graham Sutherland and Paul Drury, were so excited by the print that they resolved to discover all they could about Samuel Palmer, embarking on a series of outings to the Kent countryside. They produced a body of exquisite etchings directly influenced by Palmer’s work. Highly respected Mascalls Gallery, located on the site of Mascalls School in Paddock Wood, presents a gem of an exhibition entitled ‘Discovering Palmer's Kent - Samuel Palmer, Graham Sutherland & Paul Drury’. Doc Yard’s Techsplorers will run every day throughout August in the awe-inspiring surroundings of Slip 3, itself an impressive feat of engineering. WALK SWALE MEDWAY About a year ago, Faversham based photographer Hope Fitzgerald began taking a walk a day from her home, in any direction the wind took her, snapping the people and places she encountered as she went. That urge to explore and celebrate her local area led to the idea for ‘Walk Swale Medway’, an Ideas Test funded project for which Hope is making a pilgrimage across a 20 mile stretch of Swale and Medway, with no set route and nowhere planned to stay. Hope is literally relying upon the kindness and curiosity of strangers to see her through. Hope’s walk left Faversham on 22 June and ends on 20 July. She hopes that you would like to join her en route, or follow her progress online, or even begin to walk and document your own corner of the world. “With the First World War passing from living memory, we want to encourage people to look at the question ‘What happens if we forget?’. This is a chance to help make sure we never forget those stories that need to be told and film is the medium that is now so easily accessible to all.”

The fruits of this special project which equipped new film makers to make their own short films about the First World War are unveiled this month. ‘For the Fallen’ is a remarkable collaboration between independent production company violafilms, the Royal Engineers Museum and Blue Town Heritage Centre which has been working with participants from all over the country (including 50 local people) to give them the skills to make their own short films telling stories of the First World War. Inspired by violafilms’ ground-breaking film ‘Time Bleeds’, and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, IdeasTest and the Imperial war Museum, earlier this year the project offered film and heritage skills workshops led by an impressive list of industry professionals, including ‘Dr Who’ writer James Moran and rising independent film maker Destiny Ekaragha (‘The Park’, ‘Rogue’). Violafilms producer Debra McGee explains why the project chose the First World War for its subject matter: “For thousands of years, the human race has passed on stories from generation to generation, be it written down or by word of mouth and in more modern times by moving image. It’s how we learn and it’s how we grow. The participants’ completed films will be shown at two special screenings, at the second of which the specially commissioned Golden Poppy Awards will be announced. There is an illustrious judging panel, including Sarah Phelps, writer of BBC’s 2014 acclaimed drama ‘The Crimson Field’; BBC ‘Young Dracula’ producer, Jo Ward and actor Steve Nallon. Members of the public can also vote for the People’s Choice Award.

For dance fans in Medway, the first of two free events takes place on Sunday 6 July, from 12-3pm, at Medway Park’s main sports hall in Gillingham. Local arts and health organisations will be on hand to dish out information on how and where you can enjoy these activities in future, including: Medway Council Public Health Team, Sun Pier House, Medway Older People’s Partnership, The Right Step Dance Company, Loop Dance Company and more. Mid Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University of Kent will also be there, letting people know how to pursue further and higher education in dance. The finale of the week is the Big Dance Weekend, on 12-13 July, when specially commissioned dance performances and events take place across England. Medway’s signature Big Dance Weekend event takes place on Saturday 12 July, to coincide with Chatham’s popular family day out, the Medway River Festival. A stage and dance floor are being specially erected on newly renovated

Sun Pier, Chatham, where you can watch a new co-commission by South East Dance, the Foundation of Community Dance and Medway Council for the Big Dance Weekend 2014. Choreographed by award winning hip hop dance company Boy Blue Entertainment and Medway’s excellent Loop Dance Company, this outdoor event will include exhilarating performances and dance workshops where you can try throwing a few shapes or bustin’ a few moves of your own! If the weather is inclement, the event will move inside to Sun Pier House’s beautiful gallery space. Further afield in Kent, the University of Kent and South East Dance present ‘Kent Dancing’ at the Gulbenkian Theatre, Canterbury as part of The Big Dance (see thegulbenkian. co.uk) Headliner act Protein will showcase (in) visible Dancing on Canterbury High Street, and there are lots more performances and opportunities to get involved throughout the county. Medway’s Independent Music Festival returns with a stellar line-uP By the time this article hits the press I predict England will have won the World Cup, Andy Murray will have secured back-to-back Wimbledon Lawn Tennis titles, driver-less cars will have been made obsolete by Marty McFlystyle hoverboards and we’ll all be living on the moon. But more importantly, Homespun 2014 will nigh be upon us. Last year’s inaugural Homespun – Medway’s very own independent music festival – was a shining example of what can be achieved when musicians, promoters, venues and sponsors, and of course music fans, come together and work towards a common goal. The sheer diversity of bands playing in packed-out pubs, heaving hotel function rooms and rammed restaurant bars was astounding and a joy to behold. The atmosphere generated at last year’s event was electric and proved that you can indeed have quantity and quality in equal measure.

Taking place between Wednesday 23 and Saturday 26 July, this year’s Homespun is even more expansive, again with the aim to provide a platform for the wealth of talented local bands but also to include a smattering of fantastic acts from elsewhere. Wednesday night kicks off proceedings with a free gig at The Barge in Gillingham. There’s a top-notch line-up with postpunkster Jowe Head And The Demi Monde - formerly of Swell Maps and Television Personalities, plus Rastko, Claim frontman Dave Read, and the Black Lion Courtiers. Over at the newly-furbished Sun Pier House on Thursday night is a very special evening of live music and film. A screening of ‘Basically, Johnny Moped’, which documents the ‘70s punk combo of the same name, will be followed by a very rare treat for garage punk aficionados, namely a set from The Masonics, whose ranks include ex-Milkshakes Mickey Hampshire and Bruce Brand.

Friday’s headliners at the Gordon House Hotel in Rochester are seminal indie exponents The Wolfhounds, who appeared on the legendary C86 NME compilation cassette which set the template for indie rock and helped spawn the next generation of Britpop bands. Their spiky, angular sounds will be ably supported on the night by the fast-rising Theatre Royal who have just released their third album ‘We Don’t Know Where We Are’ to critical acclaim and gravel-voiced Medway Delta stalwart Stuart Turner And The Flat Earth Society. Also on Friday night the Billabong Club plays host to a noise-fest of the highest order. Leeds two-piece That F**king Tank, just back from supporting Foals on tour, top the bill with an excellent undercard comprising the hotly-tipped Bear Vs Manero, Punching Swans and Consortium Of Dead Souls. Friday night’s entertainment concludes with a late-night roster of bands playing a free gig at Poco Loco. There is a bulging bonanza of live music throughout the day on Saturday at a multitude of venues up and down Rochester High Street and beyond including stages at The Granville Arms, King’s Head, Eagle Tavern, The Crown, Nags Head and another late-night jamboree for dirty stopouts over at Poco Loco. The weekend’s festivities culminate in a stellar Saturday night shindig at Sun Pier House.

Younghusband

Connoisseurs of Krautrock, worshippers at the cathedral of sonic and lovers of all things psychedelic will not be disappointed. A ‘60s-style happening replete with oil wheels and pop-art projections provides the perfect backdrop for hypnotic headliners, Younghusband. The London four-piece have just returned from touring Europe with Bo Ningen and before that, Toy, on the back of releasing their debut long-player ‘Dromes’ on the excellent Sonic Cathedral record label. BBC Radio 6 Music regulars, they have been championed by the likes of Gideon Coe and Mar Riley, completing several sessions for the Mancunian DJ, most recently accompanying Malka Spigel and Colin Newman from Wire. Indeed, post-punk pioneers Wire rated Younghusband so highly that they requested they join them in a residency of gigs at London’s Lexington earlier this year. Bracketed with the likes of Temples, Horrors and tour-mates, Toy, their dazzling drone rock is not mere motoric rhythms however. Melodies come to the fore through the shoegazey haze with chiming guitar riffs reminiscent of the Bunnymen in their pomp and there is a shimmering pure pop sensibility at the core of singles ‘Comets Crossed’ and ‘Silver Sisters'. Support at Sun Pier House comes from The Parade, recently signed to cult indie label Too Pure and providing Lupen Crook with a new role, Galileo 7 fronted by ex-Prisoner Alan Crockford, lab-coated surfatronic retro-futurists The Sine Waves and situationist art-rockers Hand Of Stabs.

They say nostalgia isn’t what it was, and why should it be? False Memory Lane, the latest album from The Galileo 7 is a colourful affair. Musically it’s a bit like going into the shop in Mr Benn and coming out dressed like Syd Barrett circa 1967, but still with your digital watch and smartphone intact. It’s pure, authentic psychedelic pop with a smattering of more contemporary elements thrown in to give it a unique twist, topped off with just a pinch of molten chocolate chips. What does that mean? It means that if you like really good, dynamic songs, incisive organ lines, bouncing Mellotron, fat, dripping bass, rip snorting guitars, wasp-in-a-tin guitars, expressive drums and tight harmonies in widescreen stereo you should probably grab a copy of this. It’s a proper record. You can even get it on proper vinyl (and other formats) direct from the band’s website. Jackie Trinder is down on Rochester’s Esplanade with Chris F Clark’s thought-provoking collages but a hop skip and a jump away at the

Delta Studio in St Margaret’s Mews. Find her there with landscapist and MOS veteran Bernard Allum, while Linda and Peter Smith exhibit at Rochester’s Weston Road.

BILL LEWIS Also joining MOS for the first time, champion of and ambassador for Medway’s art and literature scene for many years, painter and poet Bill Lewis, is sharing a selection of his vibrant paintings, poetry books, prints and painted plates at Sun Pier House.

SUN PIER HOUSE, INTRA & WEST END STUDIOS These three artist groups are within spitting distance of each other in Chatham. Much to see, admire, buy and do. Start at Intra, where you can try your hand at printmaking

WINIFRED BAKER Like Bill Lewis, another Medway stalwart is Winifred Baker, who is exhibiting as one of the West End Studios artists (entrance through The Health House, Chatham). Baker’s work follows a symbolist approach, where everything has a meaning, primarily private but also using symbols that draw on a common cultural heritage and make connections and references that the viewer can make and take meanings from. Like the work of Bill Lewis, the work is redolent with colour, which Baker uses to communicate emotion:

‘I paint what I feel about the world around me, what I feel about life… I just react with colour’. The resulting immediacy makes for a sense of clarity and understanding but also the sensation of having a conversation with the picture. The West End Studios was founded in 1986 as an artists’ cooperative. Participating artists also include Richard Curtis, Pam Dodds, Christine Hall, Laura Murphy, John Robinson, Ann Welch and Caroline Wood.

THE TACK ROOM & THE STORY OF WOW HULKES LANE, ROCHESTER ME1 1EE

Earlier this year WOW magazine commissioned comic artist and illustrator Mark Barnes to create a poster entitled ‘The Story of WOW’, chronicling the first three years of

the magazine’s life. The poster is on show for the first time at The Tack Room during MOS, together with other works by Mark Barnes in his ‘Cupboard of Grump’ (“free forced smile with every purchase”); locally inspired lino cuts by Emily Breese and Lorri Thomas’s characterful wire ‘Birds with Personalities’. And of course, MOS veteran Wendy Daws, who will share projects and collaborations with ‘edna’, the Kent Association for the Blind Medway Art Group, Rochester Cathedral & the Kent Austistic Trust.

Last year Daws shared with visitors the process involved in creating her extraordinary bronze tactile interpretation of the Baptismal Fresco in Rochester Cathedral, and this year she has been working with the KAB Medway Art Group for older people to produce their own artworks for the Festival. Their work will be on display at two participating venues, Sun Pier House and Rochester Cathedral. Inspired by the Cathedral itself and in the spirit of the ancient graffiti within the building, the group invited Greg Stobbs AKA Squirl-Art, Street Artist to collaborate with it. "This is my first time working with anyone with a sight impairment,” says Greg Stobbs. “When Wendy asked if I'd be interested in collaborating I was unsure of how Street Art and using spray cans could work with people who haven't got good vision

and the older age range of the group. Also, I had assumptions that perhaps my work would be seen as bad and not appeal in anyway; in fact it's been the opposite. I'm just blown away at the enthusiasm and willingness of the group to have a go.”

THE OAK GALL ROCHESTER INDEPENDENT COLLEGE, 254 ST. MARGARET’S BANKS, ROCHESTER, ME1 1HY

Alongside Rochester Independent College’s exhibition of GCSE and A level Art, Design and Photography, a strange and extraordinary new structure will be open to the public during MOS 2014. Constructed in the beautiful gardens of the College by Faversham based artist and garden designer Simon Bernthal, the Oak Gall is made from sustainable materials with the idea to create a shelter and ‘quiet place’ for students. An oak gall is the common name for a large, round, apple-like growth found on many species of oak

created by gall wasps to enclose their developing larvae. The plan is to cover the outside with crushed elderberries so that the whole form glows red. RIC has been awarded a Kent Wildlife Trust Gold Award for its lovely gardens; they offer a perfect resting point for weary art pilgrims during the Festival!

THROUGH THE FLOOR TO CEILING WINDOWS OF SUN PIER HOUSE, THE SUN SETS, SHIMMERING OVER THE RIVER, AN EXPECTANT GASP OF ORANGE BURSTING INTO NIGHT, AND A PAPER MOON RISES UP TO TAKE ITS PLACE IN THE DARK. Chatham, unbelievably, has a jazz club – The Paper Moon. Not a spit and sawdust, pint and dixie Sunday afternoon affair. A slink and whisper, bellow and let go whim of a joint. A real deal, lose yourself in rhythm and let them leave you breathless night, running on the second and fourth Friday of the month.

The second half of the evening moves between jazz, funk and soul, and features a range of professional guest artists whose voices you may recognise even if the names are unfamiliar. We heard TJ Cole's soul set and drowned willingly in a voice like a volcano erupting honey. Delicious, delicate, racy and raw – this beats the hell out of Pizza Express nights and rivals the proper London and New York jazz venues for calibre and atmosphere.

The breezy daytime ambience of the SPH tearoom gives way to Chesterfields curved round a good sized, rainbow lit corner stage. Warm, wooden tables lit with floating tea lights tuck in behind the sofas. The bar serves a strong range of bottled ales, ciders and soft drinks, kegged Nelson's, and even tea if you ask nicely.

Socially, Chatham's rhythms have always been a little bit 5/8. And punk has its place in the town's roaring heart. But the heart has been crying out for something to love and soothe its more ragged edges while fitting its skewed beat. I think it may have found its balm.

The crystal clear, playful voice of West End songstress, Tabitha Webb, teases round the house band, Notable Exceptions, leading them through wistful, dreamy favourites, and sexy, raucous standards.

I was first seduced by jazz in my early twenties in NYC. Late at night, after a few pints of dive bar Guinness, I would roam the Upper West Side and, one night, stumbled into a bare brick hole in the wall, mesmerised by roiling beats, swooping vocals and men and women lost in what seemed like a musical hex. It was a love spell, and it has not been broken. At The Paper Moon – it just got recast. Director Alex Cox was the presenter of BBC2’s ‘Moviedrome’ between 1987-1994 (remember that?) however it is for his 1984 debut film ‘Repo Man’ that he is best regarded. It is widely thought of as a cult classic – with its strange assortment of characters, an almost non-existent plotline, quotable dialogue and a strong statement about life and the human condition.

LORE

Emilio Estevez is Otto, a disenfranchised 18-year-old rebellious punk who’s wandering through California going from one dead end job to another until he meets fast-talking, cocaine-sniffing veteran Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), that is, a world-weary repo man who teaches him of the ‘repo man code’ and becomes a surrogate father figure. A bounty, a chase and a hunt ensue… however this is secondary to the philosophical questioning tone of the film – namely, what is our place in the grand scheme of things?

Following the fall of the Nazi regime in the spring of 1945 and the imprisonment of her senior SS parents, 14-year-old Lore leads her young siblings from their home northwards to Hamburg. On the way they encounter a Jewish adolescent, who romantically confuses the ideologically brainwashed Lore, and who exposes them to the reality and consequences of their parents' actions.

Set against the 1980s greed is good Reagan American culture, this is a movie for the disenfranchised. This sounds heavy – it is and yet it isn’t: it is funny, heartwarming and clever. The film also features an exceptional and raucous punk rock soundtrack featuring Iggy Pop and Black Flag. As the film meanders through the city streets at night in glowing cars, we have spontaneous shootouts in hospital stairwells, the torching of street people, and hippie mechanics spouting universal wisdoms about the “cosmic order of consciousness” and the “lattice of coincidence”. The much-anticipated follow up to the 2004 film ‘Somersault’ by Australian Director Cate Shortland with an adaptation of Rachel Seiffert’s short story, ‘The Dark Room’. ‘Lore’ is a gritty and unnerving tale of the children of Nazi Germany facing up to troops invading their land.

Square Pegs is a Maidstone based, community arts organisation which runs high quality, accessible, inclusive drama groups & arts activities across Kent. We work with young people age 7 – 25 who have a learning disability, social communication difficulties or who find it hard to fit in with mainstream activities.

WOW READERS DRAW WIN ONE OF TWO FREE PLACES ON A NEW ACTING COURSE FROM PD THEATRE WORKSHOPS! A new series of interlinked acting courses for adults starts this month. Each set of workshops explores some of the key ideas of Constantin Stanislavski. You can attend one, two or all three of the courses: • The Actor and The Character: starts Sat 19 July, 2-4pm • The Actor and the Script: starts Sat 9 Aug, 2-4pm • The Actor and The Audience: start date tbc

We help our young people to develop communication and social skills, confidence and self-esteem through weekly drama workshops, arts activities, theatrical performances and social events, and provide a safe and positive environment for people to meet new friends and other families within the local community. Our approach has always been to work in a way which celebrates difference & individuality, nurtures creativity and encourages each person to shine in their own way. Each summer we bring together our three Maidstone groups for an annual theatre production. This year we are excited to be presenting our unique version of ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’ written especially for our young people and with an original musical score composed by a local professional. We also work with a local artist/designer to create our set and costumes as well as being supported by our team of amazing volunteers. Constantin Stanislavski was a Russian actor, theatre director and teacher. He demanded from his students an extreme “truth” on stage – bringing a new and almost shocking realism to the theatre. Stanislavski’s legacy is huge. A great deal of today’s stage acting (and almost everything you see on TV and in the Cinema) is directly and profoundly influenced by his ideas. Paul Doust trained at the Guildhall School of Speech and Drama, London. He is also a qualified adult tutor for Medway Adult and Community Learning. Paul has written for BBC’s ‘Eastenders’ and is a published stage playwright.

KENT ARTISTS NETWORK This summer Kent Artists Network is holding its inaugural exhibition at Nucleus Arts gallery, Chatham. Hosting a selection of Kent’s best professional forward-thinking artists, the exhibition offers an opportunity to view and buy cutting edge art from across the county in a variety of mediums. There are works by Bill Lewis, Mechanica, Victoria Hayman, Peter Reeds, Anne Taylor and many more. The Kent Artists Network (KAN) started six months ago, with a Facebook group created by Jill Holder for Kent based artists to find one another and share ideas, their work, and support for one another. The group currently has over 200 members across all artistic disciplines from painting to sculpture, photography to contemporary jewellery.
